Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

Air Conditioned Restaurants: Readers are encouraged to recommend any restaurants in the area with proper air-con. Some places with small, over-worked air-con units, and/or waiters keeping the door open as they shuttle between the kitchen and their terrace, are still very warm inside, you may as well sit outside and pray for a breeze. What I’d like are recommendations for establishments where the air-con is actually effective, where you can enjoy a meal without sweating. And remember, places change over time. Places I would have recommended last year are no longer “cool” (pun intended). So, only current info please. -Ed.

ANDALUCÍA

Drivers in Andalusia will be able to register at the ITV without leaving the car: {Translation}
– The public company Verificaciones Industriales de Andalucía, Veiasa, has implemented an innovative project called Directo a Línea in its network of 70 ITV stations, which allows users to directly access the inspection line, completing all the previous procedures virtually and without the need to go to the offices.
– This is a new web application, a pioneer in the national vehicle inspection sector, which sends a text message (SMS) to the user’s mobile phone with a link to a web page where the appointment details are pre-loaded. By simply pressing the Here I am button, the customer can register without leaving their vehicle.
– Thanks to this tool, the user will be able to pay with a bank card, whether or not he/she registered it when requesting an appointment, and will also be able to see the call to the inspection line from his/her own vehicle, as the line notification panel will be displayed on his/her own mobile phone.
– This is a tool whose main advantage is the speed of the registration process, as it takes no more than a minute, especially if the user has previously paid online. In addition to the convenience of not having to get out of the car to carry out this procedure, the application allows card payments to be made on the spot, offering secure and safe transactions.
– An outstanding feature offered by this application is that users can know in real time the number of people ahead of them before passing the ITV, which helps to better manage the waiting time. With Directo a Línea, the experience of passing the ITV becomes faster, more convenient and efficient, marking a significant advance in the digitalisation of vehicle inspection services in Andalusia. Loles López accuses the government of acting “like Amazon” when it comes to the distribution of migrants: {Translation}
– The Andalusian government does not share the migration policy of the central government. This has been stated on several occasions by the Andalusian Minister of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, Loles López {pic}, who on Wednesday insisted on her criticism of the lack of information, coordination and funds to be able to deal with the reception of migrants, not only minors but also adults. In this sense, Loles López accused the government on Wednesday of “acting like Amazon” in the distribution of migrant minors, in a parallelism that led her to argue that “Like Amazon distributes packages- they are going to distribute migrants without funding, without information”.
– Speaking to the media before chairing the plenary session of the Andalusian Forum for the integration of people of migrant origin, López concluded that “this is their policy” after arguing that “they cannot look the other way because there is no funding” when the situation that the autonomous communities must face is that “more and more spending is necessary” due to attending to an increase in the number of unaccompanied migrant minors.
– The Councillor for Social Inclusion pointed out that “the Sectoral Conference on Migration told us that a fairly large number were coming” and since that announcement, the autonomous communities have been left in doubt as to “how we prepare ourselves”. “This is what we are demanding from the Ministry”, said López, who lamented that “there is no funding, no information, no coordination”, with the aggravating factor that “they do not apply migration policy, they do not apply foreign policy, they do not apply work in the country of origin, they do not declare a migration emergency and they do not link the European Union”, to ask rhetorically about “what is the policy of the Spanish Government” in terms of migrant minors and infer this parallelism with Amazon? MALAGA PROVINCE

Mercury soars above 40C in many parts of Malaga as the province swelters:
– The threat of an amber alert was more than fulfilled and the thermometers shot up, with the highest official record being in Álora: where the afternoon temperature registered a stifling 44.2C. That was the official figure from Spain’s state weather agency (Aemet), on what has been, in general terms, the hottest day of the year in the province so far.
– Tomorrow (Friday), the amber weather alert will be activated again between 1 pm and 9 pm. There is a significant risk of exceeding 39 degrees on the Costa del Sol and in the Axarquía and Guadalhorce valley areas the temperatures could again exceed 40C.
– Meanwhile today, in Coín temperatures reached 42.5C this Thursday. Just behind was Alpandeire (41.3 degrees), Estepona (40.3) and Cortes de la Frontera (40), which surpassed the psychological barrier. Very close to 40 were Malaga Airport (39.4C), Malaga Consul (39 degrees), Torremolinos (38.6), Benahavís (38.5), Fuente de Piedra (38.3), Antequera (38), and Ronda (37.2).
– Residents and visitors in Vélez-Málaga saw 35.7C, Rincón (34.8), Nerja (34.1), Algarrobo (34), and Marbella (33 degrees in the port) have breathed a little easier.
– On the first day of the month temperatures hit almost 50C in the street in Antequera, in the north of Malaga province. It reached 48C in the sun and 42 degrees in the shade in the early afternoon, on another very hot day in the town. The outside thermometers in the town’s street reached 48 degrees at 5.30pm at the Hermanos Mir Muñoz pharmacy in Avenida de Pío XII. At the same time, at the Cervera pharmacy in San Agustín, which was already in the shade, the temperature was 42 degrees.

TORROX

Two minors on motorcycle lead police on 15 minutes late night chase along Torrox beach: {Translation, summary}
– It happened a few days ago in Torrox-Costa, at around 2.00 am. {I checked this story in 5 different Spanish news websites, none had the exact date. -Ed.} Two minors were riding a 125cc motorbike at over 40 kilometres per hour, in an area which is limited to 20, so a Torrox Local Police patrol decided to stop them.
– The two minors, residents of Nerja, the 15 year old driver, who did not have a licence to drive this type of vehicle, and a 17 year old passenger, decided to flee. The chase lasted 15 minutes, through pedestrian areas, such as the Ferrara seafront, in forbidden directions, and at high speed. In fact, the two occupants of the motorbike almost ran over several pedestrians.
– The officers, who were in a police car, finally stopped them at the El Peñoncillo dry dock, more than five kilometres away from where the chase began. The driver tested negative for alcohol. Finnish MP Calls for Exclusion of Hungary From Schengen Zone:
– The Chairperson of the Finnish Social Democratic Parliamentary Group, Tytti Tuppurainen {pic}, said that Hungary must be excluded from the free movement in the Schengen Zone.
– Her comments came following Budapest’s decision to extend the National Card Program to Russia and Belarus.
– Hungarian MFA considered “childish lies” comments that Budapest is endangering the security of the Schengen Zone by extending the National Card Program to Russia and Belarus.
– Earlier this month Hungary introduced the National Card permitting “guest workers” from eight countries, taking also into account those from Russia and Belarus, to reach this country without being subject to security screenings. HEALTH

This Week’s SAS Compensation Payout: {Translation, summary}
– The Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) has sentenced the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) to compensate the relatives of a 70-year-old patient from Jaén with 109,000 euros.
– The TSJA ordered the SAS to compensate the widow and two children of a patient who bled to death waiting for an ambulance to be transferred to the hospital.
– The events took place on August 20, 2018 in the capital of Jaén when the man’s family telephoned for an ambulance to treat him for abundant and uncontrolled bleeding due to a ruptured varicose vein. After an hour and 45mins without help arriving, they called again. The family assured that an hour and a quarter passed after their second call until the ambulance arrived, without a doctor, at their home and from there the man was transferred to the Jaén University Hospital – which was barely 200 meters away – three hours after the first phone call was made.
– TSJA cited the inexcusable delay from the second call. “This implies, without the need to resort to any other consideration, a delay attributable to the assistance services,” is indicated in the TSJA ruling, which also points out that “the lack of response was unjustified.” Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1728283/condenan-al-sas-por-la-muerte-de-un-hombre-de-jaen-que-esperaba-una-ambulancia/

TRAVEL

Passengers at EU Airports Not Allowed to Carry Over 100ml of Liquids on Cabin Luggage as of September 1:
– Newly updated EU regulation has reintroduced restrictions on passengers travelling with a European airline.
– As of September 1, 2024, these passengers must carry at most 100ml liquids in their cabin baggage, including aerosol and gel containers, Schengen.News reports.
– ACI expects that the new restriction will result in significant operational strain and will impact the passenger experience and airports that have deployed this sort of technology, considering that purchasing C3 scanners, can cost almost eight times more than the regular machines. Their maintenance costs are also four times higher.
– Some airports in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Malta have deployed C3 scanners, while in the UK, a total of six smaller airports have installed the devices. All of these UK airports are required to implement the new liquid rule. FROM THE “WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING” DEPARTMENT

IOC- Olympic Bonehead

Imane Khelif, transgender boxer in middle of Olympics gender storm, forces tearful first female opponent to quit 46 seconds into fight:
– Khelif (wearing red in pic), a M>F transgender Algerian who failed gender eligibility tests at the 2023 World Championships, forced her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, to withdraw from their opening-round bout in 46 seconds Thursday. A furious Carini was left in tears and retreated to her corner after getting hit twice in the face by Khelif. She yelled “this is unjust” at her corner and slammed her headgear on the canvas as the match in the 66-kilogram division was called off.
– Carini refused a handshake from Khelif and then ripped her hand away from the ref as Khelif’s was raised as the winner.
“I’m used to suffering,” Carini said after the fight when she spoke to reporters for 20 minutes through tears. “I’ve never taken a punch like that, it’s impossible to continue. I’m nobody to say it’s illegal. “I got into the ring to fight. But I didn’t feel like it anymore after the first minute. I started to feel a strong pain in my nose. I didn’t give up, but a punch hurt too much and so I said enough. I’m leaving with my head held high.”
– Carini’s coach, Emanuel Renzini, told reporters that he was unsure if the boxer’s nose was broken and that she had been warned not to take the fight. “Many people in Italy tried to call and tell her: ‘Don’t go please: It’s a man, it’s dangerous for you,” Renzini said.
– Before the Olympics, the IOC defended the decision to let M>F transgenders Khelif, 25, and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting into the competition after both were disqualified from the world championships.
– “All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations,” the International Olympic Committee said in a statement prior to the Games.
– Both had competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and failed to medal. “I’m here for the gold,” Khelif told BBC Sport. “I fight everybody.”
– The different status of Lin and Khelif at the Olympics and Worlds is fallout from the years-long dispute between the IOC and the Russian-led IBA over alleged failures of governance and integrity, plus reliance on funding from state energy firm Gazprom.
– “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. “They are women in their passports and it’s stated that this is the case, that they are female.”
– The IOC has appointed officials to run boxing at two straight Summer Games and acknowledged Monday the tournament rules for Paris are “descended from” those in place eight years ago at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Boxing officials picked to run Paris qualifying and finals tournaments tried “to restrict amendments to minimize the impact on athletes’ preparation and guaranteeing consistency between Olympic Games,” the IOC said.
– The IOC-run database of about 10,700 athletes competing in Paris detailed both boxers’ experiences at the 2023 worlds.
– Khelif was disqualified “just hours before her gold medal showdown” against a Chinese opponent “after her elevated levels of testosterone failed to meet the eligibility criteria.” Khelif will next fight in the quarterfinals against Hungaria’s Anna Luca Hamori on Saturday.
– “I’m not scared,” said Hamori, who trounced Australia’s Marissa Williamson Pohlman in her opening fight. “I don’t care about the press story and social media. If she or he is a man, it will be a bigger victory for me if I win.”
– Outrage exploded around the world, including from Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. “I regret it [Carini’s withdrawal] even more. I was emotional yesterday when she wrote ‘I will fight’ because the dedication, the head, the character, surely also play a role in these things,” Meloni said. “But then it also matters to be able to compete on equal grounds and, from my point of view, it was not an even contest.” Full article: https://nypost.com/2024/08/01/sports/imane-khelif-forces-opponent-to-quit-46-seconds-into-fight-after-gender-storm/ & X Link 1 & X Link 2

Tennis News- Alcaraz reaches Olympics singles semis, youngest since Djokovic:
– Carlos Alcaraz says he doesn’t feel unbeatable at Roland Garros, the site of the Paris Olympics tennis competition and the French Open title he won last month. His opponents might disagree. Alcaraz ran his winning streak at the place to 11 matches and became the youngest man to reach the singles semifinals at a Summer Games since Novak Djokovic in 2008, getting past Tommy Paul of the U.S. 6-3, 7-6 (7) at Court Philippe Chatrier on Thursday.
– Alcaraz announced later Thursday that he has withdrawn from next week’s Canadian Masters in Montreal. “It has been a very long season for me and due to the accumulation of matches and fatigue, I will not be able to play in Montreal this year,” Alcaraz said in a Tennis Canada statement.
