Laundry and dry cleaning experts: Can anyone advise me of a place to take two sets of patio curtains for cleaning. They are a bit complex as they are heavy cotton but the lining is thermal and blackout. Ideally I wanted to dye them a darker colour but cannot find anywhere here that does this process.
However anywhere that is capable of cleaning them successfully would be helpful as the label says wash but having washed a pair before exactly as the label instructed the lining was perfect but the curtain shrunk in length, I don’t want to go down that road again!

Air Conditioned Restaurants: Readers are encouraged to recommend any restaurants in the area with proper air-con. Some places with small, over-worked
air-con units, and/or waiters keeping the door open as they shuttle between the kitchen and their terrace, are still very warm inside, you may as well sit outside and pray for a breeze. What I’d like are recommendations for establishments where the air-con is actually effective, where you can enjoy a meal without sweating. And remember, places change over time. Places I would have recommended last year are no longer “cool” (pun intended). So, only current info please. -Ed.

SPAIN
Conor McGregor denounces the double beheading in Valencia and demands “immediate deportation”: {Translation}
– Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor has expressed his concern on social media about several stabbing incidents committed by illegal immigrants. In particular, McGregor denounced a double murder in Valencia, where one of the victims was decapitated by a man of Algerian origin.
– In response to these events, McGregor has called for the “immediate deportation” of all illegal immigrants, arguing that those who pose a “danger” should be expelled. His comments again reflect his concern about the rise in immigration in both Spain and Ireland. What in the world was Conor talking about? Three new beheadings in Valencia? You have to dig deep to find any info on these recent murders, more precisely 2 beheadings and a slit throat. Mainstream sources are avoiding this story. Here is what I found: {Translated, summaries}
1. Another man beheaded in Valencia, the second in less than 30 hours:
– A man has been decapitated in Carcaixent (Valencia), in what is the second similar murder in less than 30 hours, in addition to the decapitation of José Andrés Peña, a 40-year-old man, which occurred on Tuesday night on the pedestrian bridge of Las Moreras. This new murder occurred after midnight on Thursday. The Guardia Civil has taken over the investigation of the case. Source, Spanish: https://gaceta.es/espana/decapitan-a-un-hombre-en-valencia-el-segundo-en-menos-de-30-horas-20240801-1101/
2. A 57-year-old woman dies after throat slit in Cuenca, the third similar murder in 72 hours:
– A 57-year-old woman has lost her life from wounds to her neck after being attacked with a knife in a residence in Santa Ana street in Cuenca. The National Police have initially ruled out that it is a case of domestic violence. Units from the National Police and the Local Police of Cuenca were on the scene, along with a mobile ICU, whose medical staff were only able to confirm the death of the woman. According to National Police sources, the investigations are progressing positively, but no further details can be given due to the secrecy surrounding the case. 3. Two Brutal Beheadings in Valencia Within 30 Hours Leave Community in Shock:
– In a span of less than 30 hours, Valencia, Spain, has been rocked by two horrific murders, leaving the community in shock and mourning. These incidents have been marked by their brutal nature, with both victims meeting a gruesome end.
– The first tragedy occurred early on Tuesday, July 30th. José Andrés Peña, a 40-year-old man, was found beheaded on the pedestrian bridge near the Oceanogràfic in Valencia City. This horrifying act of violence left the community stunned, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Barely 30 hours later, in the early hours of Thursday, a second man was similarly killed in Carcaixent, Valencia. Shortly after midnight, a neighbor called emergency services, reporting a man lying in the street with severe neck wounds. He had received several stab wounds to his neck and collapsed in the middle of the street. Full article: https://rairfoundation.com/spain-two-brutal-beheadings-valencia-within-30-hours/ & Video Link

Alert for West Nile virus- Andalusia confirms nine new cases in four municipalities: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Health has confirmed this Monday nine new cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in two people from Los Palacios & Villafranca, three others from Dos Hermanas, another pair from Coria del Río and another in La Puebla del Río; although six of them have already been discharged.
– Health has also detected the presence of WNV in the captures of mosquitoes transmitting the infection carried out between 23 and 31 July in the Sevillian municipalities of Almensilla, Villamanrique de la Condesa, Bollullos de la Mitación and Utrera and in Montalbán (Córdoba). In addition, it has also confirmed the presence of WNV in mosquitoes captured in other municipalities in Seville: La Puebla del Río, Coria del Río and Palomares del Río.
– West Nile virus has been detected in three horses: in La Palma del Condado (Huelva), a horse in Almensilla (Seville) and another in Seville (Seville).

Andalusian travel agencies warn of the decline in air reservations after the summer and point to an economic “recession”: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Federation of Travel Agencies (FAAV) has warned about the decline in air reservations after the summer – during the months of September,
October and November – and points as possible factors to the “economic slowdown” and the drop in the “champagne effect” to travel after the Covid-19 pandemic. The forecasts for the summer months are “in tune” with the data for 2023, a record year, “very good” for tourism. However, as of September there is “some concern” about the decrease in reservations, confirmed by airlines, at this point in the summer. Maro residents can now request their space in the new authorized parking area: {Translation, summary}
– Due to the increasing difficulty in finding parking in Maro, exacerbated by the large influx of tourists to the town, the Town Hall has decided to implement a series of authorised parking zones for residents.
– The first phase of the project will consist of making a section of the Plaza de Maro car park available for residents. Subsequently, the measure will be extended to different streets in the town centre. “The intention is to offer a solution to the parking problems that affect our residents, especially during the high tourist season, when the demand for parking spaces increases significantly,” said Councilor Arce.
– To access these new parking spaces, residents must submit an application at the Maro Home and Social Centre, which will be available for this procedure from 18:00 to 20:00 hours. On submitting the application, residents will receive an authorisation which must be placed in the vehicle in order to use the designated parking areas. Applicants must be registered in Maro and have no debts with the local tax authorities, either for fines or road taxes. In addition, they must provide a copy of their DNI/NIE and the vehicle’s registration certificate. UK
Britain on fire against illegal immigration after the stabbing murder of 3 girls: {Translation}
– Britain It’s burning. Literally. People have had enough and the situation has reached a critical point. Major cities in the UK are experiencing unprecedented riots this summer, both in scale and intensity. The wave of violent protests, the worst in recent memory, spreads like an uncontrolled fire from city to city, very actively fueled by nationalist and far-right groups, fed up with the passivity of the police, judges and authorities with illegal immigration.
– This Saturday, August 3, 2024, the provisional balance of the ‘battle’ already includes at least twenty detainees and four injured police officers. The figures are striking but they do not reflect the true magnitude of the chaos that the authorities have failed to stop, and which has been increasing since last Monday. The trigger for this crisis was a brutal crime: the stabbing murder of three girls in a Southport children’s centre.
Eight other minors were stabbed, although they survived.
– The perpetrator of this bloody attack is a 17-year-old young man, the son of Rwandan immigrants, born in Cardiff. The murderer committed the crime just six days before his 18th birthday.
– Public outrage at this horrendous act has translated into violence, directed against those trying to stop the mobilizations, which have adopted a marked anti-immigration tone, specifically against immigration of Islamic origin.
– The protests have multiplied, fueled by social networks and encouraged by far-right leaders who have found in citizen indignation fertile ground to promote their anti-immigration theses. The British Government has tried, without success, to censor this wave of riots. Labor’s Keir Starmer took over as prime minister on July 5 and has not even been in power for a month.
– However, the social upheaval, far from diminishing, has intensified, with numerous calls for protests throughout the country. The material damage is extensive, and images of violent clashes between protesters and police circulate widely on social networks and in the media, both national and international. This weekend more than thirty mobilizations have been called throughout the United Kingdom. The wave of unrest has even reached Belfast, the former epicenter of IRA terrorism, which now shares the same violence as the rest of the country.
– Cities with potentially dangerous protests include Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, and Nottingham, as well as Bolton, Hull, Lancaster, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, St Helens, Weymouth, Rotherham, Preston, and Blackpool. These are just some of the affected towns, as the demonstrations spread throughout the country.
– In Hull, fires have been reported on main shopping streets, while in Bristol there have been violent clashes between far-right protesters and far-left counter-protesters, with police caught in the middle trying to control the situation.
– In Liverpool, riots have reached the business district, with numerous arrests and several police officers injured. Leeds has also been the scene of continuous unrest, although this Saturday there seemed to be a brief respite, but the authorities do not consider the tension to be over.
– The Minister of the Interior, Yvette Cooper, is trying to project a discourse of authority that, until now, has not had the desired impact on the streets. Cooper has called the protesters’ actions “criminal violence and disorder,” and has ordered police to respond with “the strongest possible measures.” Furthermore, she has urged the Prosecutor’s Office to act quickly and rigorously, and the courts to impose exemplary sentences against those responsible for the riots.
“Anyone who participates in this type of disorder must be clear that they will pay.” However, her words have not translated into a restoration of order, and the overwhelmed police consider government support insufficient. Huge numbers turn out this weekend in Middlesbrough, England, to march against open borders after 3 girls murdered last week:
– The left-wing British government has dismissed protesters as “far-right.”

GASTRONOMIA
Hidden Restaurants- A hip new trend adding mystery to the dining experience comes to Nerja: {Translation of review by Antonio Contreras, DiarioSur}
– {After seeing the popularity of an article I posted about Granada’s hidden restaurant, its entry door disguiesed as a working vending machine, I think this will interest some of you. Harkens back to the days of the American prohibition era hidden speakeasies & passwords. -Ed.}
– The Oculto experience is something that aims to go beyond gastronomy. It is the result of a society that grows with social networks in its daily life. Where showing what we eat or where we eat is almost as important as the taste of the food itself (if not more). Here Oculto has everything to gain: a post entering the place or inside it will win you a few impressions in your circle, that’s for sure. At first glance it would be hard to believe that, in Calle Castilla Pérez, in Nerja, a restaurant is hidden away.
– A façade of a residential building where the only hint that something other than a flat is hidden inside is a small black plaque, with the word ‘Oculto’ in gold, next to a small box. The ‘speakeasy’ feel is part of its game, and it pulls it off very effectively. Once we enter the password sent to us by WhatsApp after booking (so forget about impromptu plans at Oculto), the gate opens and we enter a dark room, where we wait for them to come and pick us up and take us into the restaurant.
– Inside, things change completely: that clandestine air gives way to a luxurious and very visual place, where gastronomy is intermingled with a somewhat ‘disco’ atmosphere between the volume of the music and the play of lights. It’s certainly unlike anything I’ve ever been to before.
– But more importantly, how do you eat? Here I mention just a few of the many offerings. There are some dishes that, according to the workers themselves, “cannot be missing from our dinner”. The most famous of these is the ‘Jamón Oculto’. Thin slices of entrecote matured for ninety days and flambéed at the table. It’s not exactly ham, but that’s what makes it a must. Its taste is similar to ham, but at the same time it has nothing to do with it. It is a different recipe with a flavour that is hard to find elsewhere. An essential dish that costs 26.90 euros a plate.
– You shouldn’t miss one of their latest additions either, the lemon fish tiraditos with truffle (pic, left). Slices of lemon fish with natural truffle, ponzu sauce, yuzu, truffle mayonnaise and shavings of tempura with baby garlic. Citrus is one of the main protagonists in this dish, which costs 24 euros.
– In the land of dessert, the hidden Snicker takes the cake. It is, quite literally, a giant Snicker. So if you don’t like this little bar, go for another one. But if you do, you’ll want to take one home.
– As there are many dishes, but only one stomach, it’s up to you to choose. Among the personal choices is the spicy tuna tartar (26 euros) (pic, right), a sure hit with tartar lovers, although among so much seasoning the flavour of the tuna is slightly overshadowed.
– We continue with a riskier mix, a synthesis between Japanese gastronomy and the islands of French Polynesia: sirloin tartar nigiris (3.90 euros each). This combination of two worlds, garnished with parmesan and truffle, goes well together. Don’t expect the usual nigiri, because as the ingredients indicate, it’s not very usual. But if you’re not narrow-minded, you’re sure to enjoy it.
– We close with a more substantial dish, the Lotus burger. This burger is dressed with a sauce of the trendy biscuit and is an explosion of sauces. The meat is good, but not one of the best I’ve tasted. Priced at 18 euros without fries, I think it’s an expendable dish. Although here, in addition to the food, what you pay for is the concept.

Olympic Boxing Scandal Update- The International Boxing Association will reward the female Italian boxer who lost against the intergender as if she were an Olympic champion: {Translation, summary}
– The International Boxing Association (IBA) said it will award Italian fighter Angela Carini {pic, blue} the prize money she would have won had she won the Olympic title. The transalpine fighter said goodbye to her dream after losing her bout at the Games after 46 seconds of the first round against Algeria’s Imane Khelif {pic, red}, who was disqualified from the World Championships organised by the body for not meeting the gender eligibility criteria, and so they wanted to make a gesture to her.
– The Italian Carini abandoned after 46 seconds her fight with the Algerian Imane Khelif, an intersex athlete who did not pass the gender tests in the championships organised by the IBA, but who does fight in the Games, as the International Olympic Committee defends that Khelif meets the eligibility rules for women, which are based on the sex listed on her passport.
– “It has hurt me a lot. I’m heartbroken. I went to the ring to honour my father. I was told many times that I was a warrior, but I preferred to stop for my health. I had never felt a blow like that,” said the Italian after the fight. The IBA announced at the time that it would award $50,000 to boxers who win a gold medal at the Games, but it will also do so with Carini, as if she were the Olympic champion. Jihadism threatens Spain with ‘targets’ on the King, Pedro Sánchez, tourist areas, and support these calls to action with references to the Inquisition: {Translation}
– References to Spain – under the express denomination of ‘Al Ándalus’ – are a constant feature of the well-established propaganda apparatus of jihadist organisations, be they Al Qaeda, Daesh, or some of their branches. However, there are occasions in which threats focus on specific personalities or on certain historical milestones: King Felipe VI, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, or references to the Holy Inquisition are some of the protagonists of the messages disseminated by groups linked to terrorism in the last year, according to what the intelligence services have been able to ascertain.
– The monitoring of groups related to Daesh or Al Qaeda – with the growing influence of the Islamic State of Khorasan – is one of the usual tasks of the Spanish intelligence services, both the National Police and the Civil Guard, as well as the CNI. These are spaces where the milieu of these terrorist organisations, if not directly their leadership, pour out their proclamations, recruitment messages… and threats against our country. In its Balance del terrorismo en España 2023, the Centro Memorial de Víctimas del Terrorismo (Memorial Centre for Victims of Terrorism) lists some of the references made by these groups.
– The messages in which they encourage the ‘reconquest’ of Al-Andalus, due to the domination of Islam over the region several centuries ago, are well known. “This vision of the past is shared by the two main branches of jihadist terrorism, both Al Qaeda and the Islamic State-Daesh, and their publicity structures and those of their affiliates launch messages claiming Al-Andalus that have become combat obligations for today’s jihadists,” the Memorial Centre states in its report.
– In addition to these historical references, there are other highly topical issues, mainly due to the NATO military deployments in which Spain participates to combat terrorists. One of these is the International Coalition against Daesh, to which the Spanish Army is contributing in Iraq with several Chinook helicopters operating from the Ain Al Asad base – the target of several attacks in recent months by pro-Iranian militias, in line with Hamas’ activity against Israel.
– Among the messages disseminated by Daesh, the aforementioned report includes a publication entitled “The Annihilation of Christians”, where it evoked the actions of the Inquisition and the memory of Al-Andalus to justify its current terrorist activity in the world, mainly in Africa. On this occasion, the anniversary of the conquest of Granada was used by Al Qaeda to disseminate a document recalling the events of 1492 and to defend the need to reconquer Al-Andalus,” the Memorial Centre adds. References to al-Andalus were also present in a propaganda video produced by an al-Qaeda production company which was released in March last year and which encouraged jihad.
– Moreover, the jihadist groups launched messages with explicit references to Spanish public figures. The Islamic State of Khorasan, with roots in Central Asia but now extending its tentacles towards the West, published an image of King Felipe VI.
– Daesh also published another of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a video attacking Western politicians. Similarly, the Islamic State released another recording with images of the mosque-cathedral of Cordoba and the Roman bridge in Granada, as well as others of Seville.
– The official Al Qaeda magazine, in September, included Spain, along with the United Kingdom and France, among the targets to be attacked by the jihadists. In addition, messages against the King and the main Spanish political leaders have been disseminated through Telegram channels. To all this must be added the usual references to target certain Spanish territories, such as Ceuta and Melilla, or particularly busy tourist areas, such as the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona.
