Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

Air Conditioned Restaurants: Readers are encouraged to recommend any restaurants in the area with proper air-con. Some places with small, over-worked air-con units, and/or waiters keeping the door open as they shuttle between the kitchen and their terrace, are still very warm inside, you may as well sit outside and pray for a breeze. What I’d like are recommendations for establishments where the air-con is actually effective, where you can enjoy a meal without sweating. And remember, places change over time. Places I would have recommended last year are no longer “cool” (pun intended). So, only current info please. -Ed.

SPAIN

Puigdemont vanishes in front of the Mossos after giving a speech in the centre of Barcelona: {Translation, summary}
– Puigdemont appeared in Barcelona, harangued his faithful and disappeared as if by magic. It seems that the intention of the Mossos d’Esquadra was to arrest him when he appeared at the doors of the Parliament, but the coup leader has struck another blow, this time for effect, and has vanished. An overwhelmed Salvador Illa started a speech of zero interest in the chamber while the Mossos were busy searching for Spain’s most famous fugitive.
– The deployment of the regional police was aimed at shielding the Catalan parliament’s premises, the Parc de la Ciutadella. The plan was to let Puigdemont have a mass reception, make a speech and arrest him at the gates of the chamber, but everything went wrong. Surrounded by his party’s top brass, it seemed that the fugitive was on his way to the Catalan chamber, but at an undetermined point along the route, the fugitive fled again.
– The ridiculousness of the Mossos is stratospheric. Incompetence or complicity. Neither of these two scenarios favours the force and the outgoing government of the Generalitat. While the Mossos searched under every stone for Puigdemont, his trusted team was waiting at the door of the chamber. They seemed to play the role of a decoy to confuse the regional agents. The new escape would have been facilitated by people like Quim Torra, Artur Mas, Laura Borràs, Jordi Castellà and the president of the Parliament himself, Josep Rull, who acted as a screen for Puigdemont on his feigned journey to the chamber.
– As Puigdemont had not been arrested at ten o’clock in the morning, the time scheduled for the start of the investiture session, it began relatively normally. At the time of this writing, he is still on the run. Source, Spanish: https://www.libertaddigital.com/espana/politica/2024-08-08/puigdemont-reaparece-en-barcelona-ante-la-pasividad-de-los-mossos-7154081/

Two Mossos agents arrested for collaborating in Puigdemont’s escape: {Translation, summary}
– Puigdemont’s new and bizarre escape made it almost certain from the outset that it had only been possible with the complicity of one of the former president of the Generalitat’s security guards. Shortly afterwards, this possibility was confirmed with the arrest of a policeman accused of having collaborated with the pro-independence leader, as he was the owner of the vehicle in which he fled. Hours later, the arrest of a second Mossos agent was announced, who has been identified thanks to the recordings.
– These are the first consequences of the escape, but it is expected that they will not be the last, because the Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an internal investigation given the evidence that there may be more complicity, given that the device was designed in such a way that if each agent fulfilled their task it was impossible for Puigdemont to escape.
– After ten o’clock in the morning, when the evidence of the disappearance of the pro-independence leader became clear, Operation Cage was launched, affecting not only Barcelona but the whole of Catalonia, so far without positive results. The only clue at the moment to Puigdemont’s whereabouts is the car of the detained mosso. There is a crisis cabinet with the participation of the main commanders of the regional police from where the delicate situation is being managed. Police and Guardia Civil are also on alert in case they receive any information.
– “It is a disgrace for everyone,” say sources in the Mossos, stunned that a 300-strong police force has not been able to arrest Puigdemont. For all the sources consulted, this is the most serious crisis in the regional police since the events of the 1-O referendum.

The Sánchez Government hired Carlos Barrabés again in the midst of the ‘Begoña Gómez case’ outbreak: {Translation}
– The Sánchez government continues to believe that it can do whatever it deems appropriate at any given moment, regardless of what people might say. Only an executive like this one, which is in the spotlight for an alleged case of corruption, would think of continuing to contract with the same businessman who has close ties with the president’s wife, Begoña Gómez. And without showing any hint of guilt whatsoever.
– The truth is that, as the digital ‘OkDiario’ reports, on 10 May 2024 the Sanchez administration closed a contract with the company of Juan Carlos Barrabés for the purchase of items for the special team of mountain specialists.
– The paradox of the matter is that the agreement was sealed in the middle of the ‘Begoña Gómez case’. So much so that the investigating judge, Juan Carlos Peinado, had already been gathering information for several weeks.
– Pedro Sánchez’s wife is charged with the crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business, after signing two letters of recommendation so that her main partner, Juan Carlos Barrabés, also charged in the case, could strengthen her options in two government contracts, which she ended up taking for more than 10 million euros.
– In fact, the judge opened investigation proceedings against the wife of the President of the Government on 16 April 2024. That same day, the magistrate informed Gómez she was being investigated. Three weeks later, with this knowledge, the Sanchez administration still allowed contracts with Barrabés to be signed. NERJA

Nerja Town Hall Meeting- Residents complain about ‘poor state’ of new Costa del sol green area:
– The association of presidents of urbanisation communities of Nerja, APCUN, on the eastern Costa del Sol, has expressed its dissatisfaction with the state of the new ‘anillo verde’ (green ring), an area of more than 25,000 square metres which was completed at the end of 2023. However, just one year after the area was opened, APCUN says that the area has deteriorated, that the trees are dry and paths are unstable.
– Other issues were discussed by the town hall and APCUN including the relocation of the bus stop in Calle Álamos and the installation of a bus shelter, the improvement of the sewage and waste collection network in different residential areas, the extension of the southern pavement of the old N-340 road to Maro, burying electricity lines, the installation of a green screen around the water treatment plant and an animal shelter project. HEALTH

Popular sugar substitutes linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke:
– Consuming foods that contain erythritol, a popular artificial sweetener and common ingredient in keto diet products, increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, a new Cleveland Clinic study warns. Erythritol makes platelets in the blood more active, which may lead to blood clots, researchers explained Thursday in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.
– “This research raises some concerns that a standard serving of an erythritol-sweetened food or beverage may acutely stimulate a direct clot-forming effect,” said study co-author Dr. W. H. Wilson Tang, research director for Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Medicine at Cleveland Clinic.
– The US Food and Drug Administration classifies erythritol as a GRAS (“generally recognized as safe”) ingredient and permits the use of it without restriction. Unfortunately, erythritol is poorly metabolized by the body and it can accumulate. Past research by Cleveland Clinic found that people at greater risk for heart disease were twice as likely to experience a major cardiac event in three years if they had high erythritol levels compared to low levels.
– This new study focused on healthy adults. Those who consumed an erythritol dose that would be in a muffin or sugar-free soda showed a significant increase in blood clot formation while those who ate sugar did not.
– The team producing the study also recently determined that high amounts of xylitol – a sugar alcohol like erythritol that’s found in sugar-free candy, gums, baked goods and toothpaste – increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
– “I feel that choosing sugar-sweetened treats occasionally and in small amounts would be preferable to consuming drinks and foods sweetened with these sugar alcohols, especially for people at elevated risk of thrombosis such as those with heart disease, diabetes or metabolic syndrome,” team member Dr. Hazen advised.

Toby
– Approx 3 years old, found living in the Countryside, he has now been in kennels for nearly a year, and would really benefit from a home of his own, or a foster home. A big dog, nervous at first, loves other dogs and wants his own person to form a bond with. Can you help Toby? Fully vaccinated and neutered.
Olive – DOB 7.1.24. Thrown over someone’s fence with her sibling, luckily neither were hurt and found before the resident dogs found them. Now safe in kennels, Olive is only small, weighing 4kg, a very happy pup, great with other dogs, people and would make a loving pet. Vaccinations started.
– Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are €110 for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and €180 for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
