Air Conditioned Restaurant: I would like to recommend Restaurante-Cafetería Mirasol, at the top of Plaza de los Cangrejos, Nerja.
We ate there yesterday and found they had an air conditioned inside area with glass curtains. When there at 8pm the doors were closed and it was cold. Sheila, Nerja. Photo: NerjaToday.

**********

Air Conditioned Restaurants: Readers are encouraged to recommend any restaurants in the area with proper air-con. Some places with small, over-worked air-con units, and/or waiters keeping the door open as they shuttle between the kitchen and their terrace, are still very warm inside, you may as well sit outside and pray for a breeze. What I’d like are recommendations for establishments where the air-con is actually effective, where you can enjoy a meal without sweating. And remember, places change over time. Places I would have recommended last year are no longer “cool” (pun intended). So, only current info please. -Ed.

SPAIN

Puigdemont boasts about his escape while Sánchez maintains a silence that outrages the PP: {Translation}
– The spectacle offered this Thursday by Carles Puigdemont in Barcelona is still going on and remains at the centre of the political debate in the middle of August, when half of Spain is on holiday. The pro-independence politician boasts of his mockery of the authorities, while the PP lashes out at Pedro Sánchez for his resounding silence.
– “I have never wanted to turn myself in. I have never wanted to give myself up to a judicial authority that is neither competent to prosecute us for having defended the right to self-determination and having organised the Catalan independence referendum, nor does it have any interest in doing justice”, said the former autonomous president.
– Later Saturday afternoon, Puigdemont gave an interview for TV3 at his residence in Waterloo (Belgium), where he posed in his garden and office, in what were his first statements to the media after his show in Barcelona on Thursday.
– The fugitive president said that his strategy has demonstrated two things: “The first is that we have the capacity to enter and to leave, to defy a repressive state. And that we are not surrendering, and that I have not gone to give myself up”. “We activated a plan that seemed impossible, that didn’t give us much chance of success. I was convinced that I could easily end up in detention”, said Puigdemont, but he stressed that “if it worked”, this plan allowed him to demonstrate the strength of his objectives.
– Since Puigdemont’s action, President Pedro Sánchez has not said a word. The head of the Executive has not intervened in any media event and his tweets have been limited to congratulating Salvador Illa on his investiture and the most recent Spanish medallists at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This absolute silence has unleashed the wrath of the Popular Party.
– This Saturday, the deputy secretary of Autonomous, Municipal Coordination and Electoral Analysis of the formation, Elías Bendodo, has come to accuse Sánchez of collusion with Puigdemont. “We all know that this has been set up by Sánchez and the Catalan pro-independence supporters, allowing Puigdemont to come, not to be arrested and to flee again; Pedro Sánchez has allowed it and the judge is going to investigate it”, said Bendodo this Saturday. The politician from Malaga believes that “the Government should stop acting as if it were not responsible”, as border control is its responsibility, and has asked them to stop their holidays and give urgent explanations.
– “The Spaniards are outraged with what he has done to continue sitting in office and buying the chair of Salvador Illa”, he said of Pedro Sánchez, and denounced the existence of “alleged collusion and complicity of the Government” with respect to the actions of Puigdemont.
– According to Bendodo, Pedro Sánchez “should leave his deckchair, speak, explain the escape and resign”, as should the Ministers of the Interior and Defence. In the opinion of the politician from Malaga, Sánchez should call a Conference of Presidents to address the “seriousness” of the events that have occurred, since “in addition to the pathetic escape”, it should be about “the financing on behalf of the independence movement, with which the principles of equality and solidarity fly”. Two boats burn in a boathouse on Nerja beach: {Translation, summary}
– The incident occurred at around 23:00 hours on Thursday. The fire affected two boats. It happened in the boat storage area in El Playazo.
– In just a few minutes, the firefighters arrived to smother the flames. They could not prevent the two affected boats from being burnt to the ground. Several hundred boats are stored on the site, but thanks to the rapid action of the fire brigade, only two of them suffered material damage, with no personal injuries of any kind.
– Following this, agents from the Instituto Armado are investigating the causes of the fire. It has not been ruled out that it could have been caused by an electrical fault on one of the boats, although it is also thought that it could have been intentional. BONEHEAD AWARD

Today’s BONEHEAD award goes to IOC President Thomas Bach:
– International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Bach just said in a major press conference that there exists no scientific method to differentiate a man from a woman. He must have been a city kid. Any five year old child raised around farm animals knows the difference. Bach was raised in rural Tauberbischofsheim DE, more known for fruit, wine and brandy production than animal husbandry. Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bach
{- There is a very easy solution I have advocated for years. After I watched M>F trans MMA fighter Fallon Fox fracture the skull of a female opponent in a bloody 2 minute MMA fight in 2014, I came up with this. We make 3 categories for competitors, and you can only compete against others in your category: Female, Male, and Other.
1. Confirmed as born Female and competing as such.
2. Confirmed as born Male and competing as such.
3. Other: Trans, non-binary, hermaphrodite, birth defect, etc.
– Chemically enhanced performers, on steroids and such, should have their own Olympics. This is already in the works, read more here: https://enhanced.org/ -Ed.}

DoctorLaptop’s Tips #110 – Search Engine News
Google’s 2024 update reshapes website ranking system:
– Search results 20 years ago were based on the popularity of the webpage. All websites are monitored for activity, this is known as web-crawling, and it creates an index of the internet. The more visitors a page received, the higher it placed in search results for related topics. Better sites get more views, so you were more likely to find the info you searched for on top ranked results.
– Then, over the years, search providers introduced modifications that favored their business partner’s websites in search results. Then they introduced algorithms that analysed your web history, and used that to feed you search results the algorithm decided would be the most appropriate for you, AND that you would be most likely to make a purchase from. Google, being the the dominant search engine, can be blamed for most of this. It did, however, grow their ad business to create huge profits.
– Search results became polluted, and increasingly frustrating to use. Bing and Yandex are the two other main search providers. They have their own search ranking methods- Bing now uses AI to index the web and generate results of mixed quality, while Yandex continues to use its own reliable classic index. These have a very small market share compared to Google. The dozens of other even smaller search providers, with a few obscure exceptions, all use one or more of the big 3 as their results source.
– Google’s dominance and financial success lead all the other search providers to adopt Google’s profitable, but far less accurate, methods. And now all the search engines suck.
– The good news for us users is that Google has turned the tables on its competition. Now that all the competition search engines suck, Google in December 2023 began reintroducing popularity based web-indexing. Its now using an updated format, utilizing new tools and algorithms that didn’t exist in the old, original popularity based web-indexing. This supposedly allows them to filter out some of the rubbish results we now suffer with, to present fresher and more accurate results.
– I have been testing this for over a month, checking the results for the same term across Google, Bing, Yandex & DuckDuckGo. As much as I hate to say it, I have found a big improvement in Google search results compared to the others. I still dislike the ads, data collection and tracking you expose yourself to using Google, so I use a high grade VPN (Windscribe Pro), and high security web browsers (Brave, Iron, Epic, Ghostery & Floorp), that block most snooping. I now find by using Google search I am saving time lost to scanning thru page after page of search results on other search engines.

M4 Mac Mini to Become Apple’s Smallest Ever Computer With Complete Redesign + reasons to hold off buying a new Mac:
– We’ve already heard that the Mac Mini M4 is likely to land later this year, but some fresh rumors have just revealed that Apple’s tiny Mac is likely to get even smaller thanks to its first design refresh for 14 years. According to Bloomberg’s reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman, the new Mac Mini will be the company’s “smallest desktop computer yet.” In fact, the new M4-powered Mini will be so compact that it’ll be “approaching the size of an Apple TV set-top box,” according to Gurman’s sources. That would ensure it hits the milestone of being Apple’s smallest desktop so far, and the upgrade to an M4 chip could make it hugely popular.
– What other upgrades might the M4 Mac Mini get? Naturally, the Apple Intelligence features inside macOS Sequoia will be one of the mainstays. Still, it appears Apple has also tested versions with three USB-C ports on the back (the current M2 version has two Thunderbolt 4 ports) alongside an HDMI port, like the current model.
– According to Bloomberg, there will also apparently be two versions of the Mac Mini. One is expected to be powered by the base M4 chip, while another has been tipped to run on the unannounced M4 Pro chip. It sounds like the base M4 version will be available sooner, with production ramping up in August ahead of a release “later this year.” We may have to wait until October for the M4 Pro model.
– One thing we don’t yet know is whether or not Apple plans to keep the Mac Mini’s tempting pricing at the same low level. The current one starts at only $599 / £649, and according to Gurman, “the new model may be cheaper to make.” We don’t yet know if that’ll result in an even lower price tag, a similar one, or potentially a higher one.
– Don’t buy a Mac right now. This Bloomberg report has reiterated previous rumors that Apple is planning M4 refreshes {upgrade to the new M4 processor} for the iMac and MacBook Pro in 2024 as well, which means we’d advise holding off from buying a new Mac right now if you can and wait until the new models with the new, improved M4 processors start arriving in the shops.
– The exceptions to that might be if you’re considering a MacBook Air, Mac Pro, or Mac Studio, those will see upgraded processors next year. The Air apparently won’t get an M4 reboot until the spring of 2025 (in other words, sometime between March and April), while the M4-flavored Mac Pro and Mac Studio apparently won’t arrive until “the middle of next year.” Full article: https://www.techradar.com/computing/macs/the-mac-mini-m4-is-coming-and-it-could-be-the-smallest-mac-that-apples-ever-made
