Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Reader feedback- IOC President comment and your 3 categories of entrants:
– Hi Ed. I agree entirely with you on this. How the IOC allowed trans woman boxers to fight as women when the IBC banned them amazed me. Isn’t it strange that there are not many (if any) trans men boxers fighting as men! I wonder why? As you say there should be 3 categories and I can’t understand to why the IOC do not acknowledge this.
Keep up the excellent editing. Peter, UK
*Editor replies:
– Yes, there are a few trans male boxers (F>M) in the amatuer boxing organizations. Nolan Hanson founded a group for trans boxers at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY. The only trans man (F>M) pro boxer I am aware of is Patricio Manuel (July 22, 1985, age 39) {pic}, the first openly trans man to compete in a professional boxing match in the U.S. He won his debut fight in 2018 by decision. He then won his next 2 fights by decision before being knocked out at 21 seconds of the first round of his fourth fight, by Joshua Brian Reyes on 4 Apr, 2024. His current record stands at 3-1.
– Manuel identified as a man after being a five-time national women’s amateur champion, as well as competing in the 2012 Women’s U.S. Olympic Trials. Manuel was eliminated from those trials after being forced to withdraw due to receiving a shoulder injury. He began his transition with hormone treatments in 2013, and he had top surgery in Salt Lake City in 2014.

SPAIN
Two hundred autónomos with employees are throwing in the towel every day: {Translation, summary}
– The warnings recurrently issued by business associations about the medium and long-term effect of the measures approved by the government to increase social security contributions in recent years are taking shape as the spectacular levels of hiring experienced with the recovery in the years following the health crisis are reduced. This involves the substantial revaluations of the minimum wage (SMI), the new contributions aimed at refloating the Social Security coffers as a mechanism of intergenerational equity and, to a lesser extent, the sharp rise in the maximum bases, weighs more heavily if possible on small and medium-sized businesses, which are more sensitive to increases in labour costs and have less room to distribute the new burdens.
– The preliminary result cannot be less flattering: Spain has lost 73,000 autónomos with dependent employees in just one year, equivalent to a fall of 200/day. The total number of autónomos with dependent workers have fallen from 31% three years ago to 29% today.
– It is no coincidence at this point that the fall is concentrated after a three-year period in which the recovery of economic activity has been accompanied by an increase in labour costs for employers – the average cost of contributions per employee rose by 8% in 2023, the highest level in the last 24 years – both due to the effect of wage rises that have forced the inflationary environment, on the one hand, and the measures adopted directly by the Government, on the other. It is worth remembering that between 2021 and 2024 the minimum wage has risen by 18% and the CPI has climbed by 18.6%, making companies’ production costs more expensive at the same time. TORROX
Torrox Park Platform takes Endesa and the Town Hall to court: {Translation}
– Tension in Torrox Park has escalated to a new level with the announcement by the Plataforma Ciudadana contra la Subestación Eléctrica de Endesa that they have decided to take legal action against Torrox Town Hall. After months of frustration, ignored meetings and growing concern for the safety of residents, the Platform has taken the step to reorganise itself to exhaust all legal avenues in their fight against a project they consider illegal and damaging.
*ACCUSATIONS OF DECEPTION AND LACK OF TRANSPARENCY*
– The trigger for this decision has been, according to Antonio Ruiz, president of the Platform, the feeling of having been deliberately misled by the local authorities. “During all this time we were told that the substation would not be in that location, they even approved that they would look for another location in a plenary agreement”, denounces Ruiz. “How could we have presented allegations if we didn’t know what they were doing? That is a violation of our right to defend ourselves,” he adds, making it clear that they feel their rights have been trampled on in this process.
– The work on the Endesa substation continues to advance at an accelerated pace, without fulfilling the promises made by the mayor, Óscar Medina, who assured that it would have no visual impact and that the installation would be buried underground. The absence of a favourable report from the University of Málaga (UMA), which should have preceded construction, is another key point of conflict. Despite promises of transparency, residents feel they have been left in the dark.
*REORGANISATION AND FUNDRAISING FOR THE LEGAL BATTLE*
– Against this backdrop, the Platform has decided to reorganise and launch a second phase of struggle, this time in the legal arena. The affected families, concerned about the future of their homes and the safety of children in nearby schools, have begun fundraising to cover legal costs. To do so, they have opened a bank account and several local businesses have set up charity collection boxes. In addition, a Bizum number has been set up for those who wish to contribute.
*CRITICISM OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT’S SILENCE*
– The Platform has not only criticised the local government’s lack of response to their concerns, but also denounces the repeated use of administrative silence as a tactic to evade responsibility. According to them, the Medina government team has shown a “total disregard” for the rights of the residents, denying them the dialogue and transparency they deserve in a matter of such magnitude.
*AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR TORROX PARK*
– With the substation works underway and the legal battle just beginning, the future of Torrox Park and its residents is uncertain. The Platform, however, has made it clear that it will not give up. “He who knows he is right cannot give up,” concludes Ruiz, hinting that this fight is far from over. The Torrox Park community remains united in its opposition to the project, determined to assert its rights to the last consequences. GASTRONOMIA
The 49 year old Vino de Licor wine from Cádiz that has been chosen as the best in the country by Alimentos de España: {Translation, summary}
– The Amontillado Añada 1975 belonging to the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Designation of Origin, from Bodegas González Byass in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) has been awarded the prize Alimentos de España Mejores Vinos in the category Vino de Licor (liqueur wine) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
– The jury considered that this amontillado “has great personality and breaks new ground in the conception of fortified wines in the Marco de Jerez region. Despite its individuality, it retains the unique characteristics of a great amontillado”, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
– Amontillado Añada 1975 has been bottled “en rama”, without filtering or fining, and only 2,000 bottles are available. It was made with palomino fino grapes from the 1975 vintage. For years it has rested “in the stillness of the cellar, impervious to the passage of time, until it has reached the right finesse and elegance to be bottled by hand”.
– It has an amber colour, with orange reflections, steely rim, medium intensity tear, clean and bright. On the nose it is “sharp, elegant, complex and powerful” with notes of dried fruits, toasted almonds, hazelnuts and dried apricots, according to the jury, who added that it is “delicate and subtle with oxidative nuances and a slight liquorice hint at the end. On the palate it is balanced, long, compact and dry, with an evolution marked by old tannins interspersed with dried fruits and toasted notes”.
– Available on the winery website, €230 (inc VAT): https://www.tiendagonzalezbyass.com/amontillado-a%C3%B1ada-1975/ES9021575001.html

PETS
Pets To Become Luxury Item- News about the course, insurance and mandatory pet checkups: {Translation}
– There are issues in the Animal Welfare Act that did not come into force pending the approval of the regulatory development. We are talking about, among other things, the training course or the compulsory insurance for dog owners. In Libertad Digital we have had access to the draft of the Royal Decree that will regulate all these aspects and we already have the first surprises.
– Firstly, the course on responsible dog ownership, which in principle was only compulsory for dog owners, is extended to owners of cats, ferrets and other pets, who would also have to take the course if the Ministry of Social Rights, headed by Pablo Bustinduy, deems it necessary. This course would have a minimum of 4 teaching hours, would be given online and at the end would have to pass a multiple-choice test.
– The second novelty is that all dogs, cats and ferrets will have to undergo a compulsory annual veterinary check-up and this must be recorded in the pet register. It is a system that is very reminiscent of the ITV of vehicles and could also be extended to other pets if Pablo Bustinduy’s ministry so decides.
– The third major novelty concerns the compulsory third-party liability insurance for all dog owners. According to the draft Royal Decree, the cover cannot be less than 100,000 euros and must be in the name of the owner of the animal but must also include all members of the family who take care of the dog. This insurance can be included in the home insurance policy, which is what most insurers offer. And if you have two or more dogs, they can all be included in the same policy. It is not necessary to take out an insurance policy for each animal.
– All these novelties are pending approval and will come into force when the Royal Decree currently being drafted by the government is approved.
