Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

Spaniards spent 5.6% more on their shopping basket in the last year- olive oil leads the spending list: {Translation}
– Spanish households maintained their volume of purchases in the last year, with a slight increase of 0.1%. However, they spent 5.6% more to get that shopping basket, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food collected between June 2023 and the same month in 2024.
– In its consumer panel called ‘Food month by month’, the Ministry details that the average price increased by 5.5% compared to the previous year. Specifically, in the last year, consumers bought 26,816.1 million kilos/litres for a value of 82,717.3 million euros.
– By sector, households bought 2.8% fewer litres of oil, especially olive oil, the volume of which fell by 17.3%. However, expenditure in this category rose by 39%, while sunflower oil purchases increased by 23.3% and households spent 12% less in value terms.
– The meat sector gained presence in household food baskets, incorporating 3.5% more volume and 7.4% more expenditure. This increase was mainly due to fresh and frozen meat, with variations of 4.9% and 9.4%, respectively.
– Purchases of fishery products were lower in the twelve months analysed (-1.8%), but their expenditure was 3.3% higher. Thus, there was a fall of 3.5% in the fish category due to lower consumption of both fresh and frozen fish, with decreases of 3.4% and 3.8%, respectively.
– The consumption of eggs intensified, with a growth of 4.4% in volume and 6% in value, as well as that of pulses (2.3% in volume and 4% in value), sugar or flour and semolina (2.4% and 3.6% in volume and 13.9% and 4.88% in value, respectively). Bread consumption, on the other hand, decreased by 2.8% over the last twelve months up to last June and the bill fell by 1.6%.
– In the exclusive analysis for the month of June this year, households reduced the volume demand for food and beverages for domestic supply by 1.1% compared to the same month last year. In value terms, purchases increased by 1.5% with the average price increasing by 2.6% in June alone. Spanish Politics Enters The Theater Of The Absurd- Junts MPs incriminate themselves before the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia and the Supreme Court for collaborating in the escape of Puigdemont: {Translation}
– The deputies of the Parliament, the Congress of Deputies and the senators of Junts per Catalunya have submitted a written statement to the Supreme Court and the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) in which they confirm their participation in the acts of accompaniment and support for the former president Carles Puigdemont on Thursday 8 August.
– In a statement, the pro-independence party indicates that, in the case of the members of Congress and senators, the document has been registered at the Supreme Court, while the text of those of the Parliament has been sent to the TSJC. ‘We also participated in the act, we accompanied him, we helped in his protection and we were with him until his departure,’ they state in the writ. {pic}
– Among the signatories are the president of the Parliament, Josep Rull, and Junts officials such as the president of the parliamentary group in the Parliament, Albert Batet, and Junts’ spokesperson in Congress, Miriam Nogueras.
– They also insist that there are no facts constituting a crime in the return of Puigdemont and that what is ‘illegal is not applying the amnesty law by prevaricating judges’. In addition, they also denounce ‘the indiscriminate persecution of people as a result of these acts’, referring to the arrest of three agents of the Mossos for allegedly helping the pro-independence leader to escape.
– The Consell de la República has launched a campaign on Wednesday to urge people who attended the act of Puigdemont’s return to justice to ‘self-incrimination’. ‘With this joint action, we want to show that there are many of us who are willing to assume the consequences of defending our rights and freedoms: if they touch one of us, they touch us all,’ the organisation said in a statement.
– The campaign, which carries the slogan ‘#JoTambéHiVaigParticipar’, responds to the arrests made following the return and subsequent flight of Puigdemont to ‘denounce the repression and persecution suffered by those who, peacefully, exercised their rights of assembly and expression’. And they add that ‘if the people arrested are considered guilty for having participated in the event, we will also consider ourselves guilty for having organised, accompanied, protected and been with the president until his departure’, adds the statement. – The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has warned about the increase in deaths in traffic accidents in Andalusia compared to 2023. In this context, there are 143 deaths – 50 more than in the same period compared to the previous year – until August 11, which represents an increase of 54% compared to the 5% national average. Among the most affected Andalusian provinces are Granada, Córdoba and Jaén, which have more than doubled the number of registered accidents. MALAGA PROVINCE
New arrest of a network dedicated to the distribution of expired foodstuffs in Malaga: {Translation}
– Members of the ROCA Team of the Coin Civil Guard Company, within the framework of the actions carried out to check food safety, have carried out Operation Gourmet, in which a criminal organisation in Malaga dedicated to the distribution of expired foodstuffs has been dismantled, with nine people arrested and two others investigated for these acts. In addition, 1,800 kilos of badly preserved products have been seized.
– The investigation began last February after learning of a possible illegal activity carried out by two food product distribution companies located in the San Luis Industrial Estate and in El Viso de Málaga and an egg labelling and packaging company in the town of Colmenar, as detailed by the Benemérita in a statement.
– Initially, two health inspections were carried out in the companies in the town of Malaga together with two veterinary inspectors from the Health and Consumer Service of the Trade Department of Malaga City Council, and 1,800 kilos of stored food products were seized and destroyed (1,200 kilos frozen and a further 600 refrigerated) which were badly preserved, unlabelled or out of date.
– These companies were distributing meat, dairy and dairy products, eggs, egg products and vegetable products, both frozen, dried and refrigerated. Once the products had expired, they removed the labels or manually erased the expiry date, extending the expiry date and then distributing them to their customers, even using vans lacking refrigeration equipment for transport, with the consequent serious and imminent danger to the public health of consumers.
– In the warehouse located in the El Viso Industrial Estate, they had an industrial freezer which was used without authorisation, licences or other administrative authorisations to sell frozen products.
– Likewise, an egg grading, labelling and packaging machine was located and seized in the warehouse of the San Luis Industrial Estate, which was used to modify and extend the expiry date of the eggs from the company located in Colmenar. The commercial activity of selling and packing eggs had been illegally transferred to the warehouse in the San Luis industrial estate, carrying out the activity from there and using the business name of this third company to continue carrying out its activity without any sanitary control.
– Subsequently, a third health inspection was carried out at the company in Colmenar in collaboration with the Protection Unit of the Eastern Health Management Area of Malaga-Axarquia of the Andalusian Regional Government, where it was found that there was no commercial activity or machinery in this company, although it was registered with the aforementioned body. TORROX
Local Police of Torrox sanctions almost a dozen bathers for reserving a place on the beaches: {Translation}
– The Torrox Local Police have removed 50 lots of beach umbrellas, chairs and towels which were improperly occupying the beachfront during the weekend of 10-11 August. Of these lots, 11 were reclaimed by their owners, who were fined 30 euros each, making a total of 330 euros, according to Gema Rubio in Málaga Hoy.
– The Torrox Town Hall has intensified the surveillance of the beaches this August due to the increased influx of bathers. This operation was initiated after several complaints from neighbours and after detecting an increase in the improper occupation or abandonment of belongings in the areas closest to the sea.
– According to municipal sources consulted by Málaga Hoy, the aim of this measure is to ensure a more equitable and orderly use of the beaches, especially during the high season.
– During the month of July there were no significant cases of improper reservation of space on the beaches of the municipality of Torrox, so it was not considered necessary to implement specific operations.
– The introduction of the Municipal Ordinance for the Reservation of Spaces on Beaches, which includes Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Nerja, has shown improvements in the management of space on the Axarquia coastline. This regulation establishes fines of up to 300 euros, according to the same sources. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Noche en Vela in Vélez-Málaga: {Translation, summary}
– Sat, 31 Aug. 8pm-3am
– ‘On Saturday 31 August we will start up and hold a magical night which is the Noche en Vela. The main novelty is that it will start at 20.00 hours but the closing time has been extended by one hour, as there is usually a large number of people and there are usually a lot of activities. So the closing time has been extended to 3.00 in the morning. In addition, there will be 10 zones where the whole of the Noche en Vela will be centred. And these 10 zones are divided into children’s zones, zones for the older ones, and zones for the younger ones. So that everyone has their own space and can enjoy themselves according to their own tastes. We will also have 20,000 candles that will light up our most emblematic areas, our heritage, our streets and will give light to this night that we hope we can all enjoy. All the monuments, museums, exhibition halls, the library will be open and you will be able to enjoy all our cultural heritage, which as you know is quite rich. For the first time we are also going to open the Santa María Tower and you will be able to visit it and enjoy the views that this tower, so emblematic of our municipality, is going to provide us with’, commented the councillor Lourdes Piña.
– The Youth Councillor went on to give more details. ‘The inauguration will be in the Plaza de las Carmelitas. There will be a brass band, parades, spontaneous performances in the street that you can enjoy. There will also be a parade of the Golondrina Band and a multitude of activities that will bring joy and colour to our streets. The main musical performances will be Modestia Aparte and Javier Ojeda in La Fortaleza. And in the Cerro, the group Jarrillo de Lata. Another novelty that we are going to experience, in this case a little for the little ones, will be a cajonada, as there will be a hundred cajons in the Plaza de las Carmelitas that will be able to play and give that musical tone that will be in the hands of the little ones. More than 300 people can take part in this activity’, said the councillor. Ukraine behind Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, report claims, pundits express doubts:
– A report by the US outlet Wall Street Journal claims Kyiv concocted the plan to blow up the pipeline bringing Russian gas to Germany in May 2022, citing four anonymous Ukrainian military sources. A small Ukrainian crew disguised as a pleasure boat cruise was behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
– The scheme reportedly cost around $300,000 (€273,000) and involved a six-member crew on a small rented yacht. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially approved it before the US intelligence agency CIA caught wind and asked him to stop. The Ukrainian president ordered a halt but his commander-in-chief, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, went ahead with the operation anyway, the WSJ said.
– The WSJ article comes after German media reported that prosecutors had issued the first arrest warrant in their investigation into the Nord Stream attack. The report identified the man as Volodymyr Z, without citing sources, and suggested he had recently returned to Ukraine. German reports also named two other suspects, a married couple Svitlana and Yevhen Uspenska, who run a diving school in Ukraine. Stonehenge’s Altar Stone Is From Scotland Not Wales, Scientists Say:
– The six-tonne Altar Stone at the center of Stonehenge, the world’s most famous neolithic monument in southern England, is from northern Scotland, not southwest Wales, as previously thought.
– The Altar Stone, which sits at the center of Stonehenge’s iconic 5,000-year-old stone circle, is a 20-inch (50cm) thick sandstone block measuring 16×3 feet (5×1 meters). It lays flat in two pieces.
– “Our analysis found specific mineral grains in the Altar Stone are mostly between 1000 to 2000 million years old, while other minerals are around 450 million years old,” said Anthony Clarke, a PhD student from the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and lead author of a paper published in Nature this week. “This provides a distinct chemical fingerprint suggesting the stone came from rocks in the Orcadian Basin, Scotland.” That’s about 466 miles (750 kilometers) from Stonehenge.
– The discovery raises the question of exactly how the massive stone traveled that vast distance around 2600 BC. Many stones at Stonehenge are from Preseli, Wales, about 140 miles (225km) to the west.
– “Transporting such massive cargo overland from Scotland to southern England would have been extremely challenging, indicating a likely marine shipping route along the coast of Britain,” said co-author Chris Kirkland, a professor at Curtin University. “This implies long-distance trade networks and a higher level of societal organization than is widely understood to have existed during the Neolithic period in Britain.” Full article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiecartereurope/2024/08/15/stonehenges-altar-stone-is-from-scotland-not-wales-scientists-say/

First case of the more dangerous strain of MPOX found outside Africa:
– Sweden’s public health agency has recorded what it says is the first case of a more dangerous variant of mpox outside the African continent. The person became infected during a stay in an area of Africa where there is currently a major outbreak of mpox Clade 1, the agency said.
The news comes just hours after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of mpox in parts of Africa was now a public health emergency of international concern.
– While Clade 2 did cause a public health emergency in 2022, it was relatively mild and some 300 cases have already been identified in Sweden. The Swedish public health agency said Clade 1 was likely to be linked to “a higher rise of a more severe course of disease and higher mortality”.
– It said Clade 1 was more commonly spread through close contacts within households and often to children, while the milder variant was mainly spread through sexual contact. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gqr5lrpwxo?at_bbc_team=editorial

WHO declares mpox global health emergency:
– The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public health emergency of international concern.
– The highly contagious disease – formerly known as monkeypox – has killed at least 450 people during an initial outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
– It has now spread across parts of central and east Africa, and scientists are concerned about how fast a new variant of the disease is spreading and its high fatality rate.
– WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond “is very worrying”.
“A co-ordinated international response is essential to stop this outbreak and save lives,” he said.
– Mpox is transmitted through close contact, such as sex, skin-to-skin contact and talking or breathing close to another person. It causes flu-like symptoms, skin lesions and can be fatal, with four in 100 cases leading to death. Outbreaks can be controlled by preventing infections with vaccines, though these are usually only available for people at risk or those who have been in close contact with an infected person.
– A previous mpox public health emergency, declared in 2022, was caused by the relatively mild Clade 2. However, this time it is the far more deadly Clade 1 – which has killed up to 10% of those getting sick in previous outbreaks – that is surging.
– There was a change in the virus around September last year. Mutations led to an offshoot – called Clade 1b – that has since spread rapidly. This new variant has been labelled “the most dangerous yet” by one scientist.
– Since the start of the year, there have been more than 13,700 cases of mpox in the DR Congo, with at least 450 deaths. It has since been detected in other African countries – including Burundi, the Central African Republic, Kenya and Rwanda. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg35w27gzno

DoctorLaptop’s Tips #111
New Warning About Windows 11 Computer Set Ups:
– Fresh installs of Windows 11 version 24H2, including setting up a new computer, now have BitLocker device encryption enabled by default. It also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete the initial setup. You can’t use the device until the setup is complete.
BITLOCKER
– Device encryption is designed to improve the security of Windows machines by automatically enabling BitLocker encryption on the Windows install drive and backing up the recovery key to a Microsoft account or Entra ID.
– The feature could impact SSD performance on some devices. Tom’s Hardware tested this software version of BitLocker last year and found it could slow drives by up to 45 percent. Encryption also makes data recovery in the case of crashed systems or lost passwords very difficult, and often impossible. If you use encryption it is highly recommended you also do full backups regularly, to an external hard drive or a cloud storage account.
– This new encryption will have its own password-PIN, besides your log-in password/PIN. Accessing encrypted files or system files may require entering your BitLocker PIN, depending on choices you make during the BitLocker setup.
– You can disable BitLocker immediately after a fresh Win 11 install here.

INSTALLATION UPDATE
– Microsoft now requires you to have a Microsoft account in order to set up a new Windows 11 computer. As part of the setup it will require you to connect to the internet. Then it will demand you enter your Microsoft username and password to continue. With a Microsoft account linked device, you have allowed Microsoft complete access to everything on it.
– There is a work-around, that allows you to setup a new computer without a Microsoft account and maintain some degree of privacy, using what is known as a
“local account”, however Microsoft has made some changes recently that make this task complicated, and the method varies depending on the device being setup. You can find videos on Youtube that demonstrate a few methods. Be sure to only view new videos, the methods used until this Spring no longer work. This is probably best left to a tech who does it on a regular basis.
– It is also possible to setup a new Win 11 install with a Microsoft account, then add a local account with a different user name, and then delete the account linked to Microsoft.
– If you use a local account, and you later sign into any Google service, like Gmail or Chrome browser, your computer will automatically convert your Local account to a Microsoft account.
– If privacy is your concern, use a local account, and quit using any Google services. When I set up new computers for security conscious clients, I always tell them to bring me the device without ever having powered it up. That way I can control the initial Win 11 installation: make it a “local account”, turn off BitLocker & install a browser option to Chrome. In this way we avoid as much Microsoft snooping as possible.
– If I was going to buy a new computer, I’d wait until next Spring, when the new Win 12 computers will hit the market. After that we anticipate Win 13 to be released in 2028. New Win 12 computers will have advanced processors that will be updatable to Win 13. A new Win 11 computer will be updatable to Win 12, but may not be Win 13 compatible.
