Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

More than 1,300 illegal immigrants have arrived in Spain in the last week: {Translation}
– No migratory route in Spain has been free of illegal entries in the last week. From the Balearic Islands to the Canary Islands, passing through Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, Granada, Malaga, Cadiz and even the autonomous city of Ceuta, all are active despite the heat wave. In total, almost fifty boats have left a total of 1,362 illegal immigrants in Spain.
– The worst part has once again been borne by the Canary Islands, where there has been a reactivation of the Atlantic route that has led to the illegal entry of more than 830 immigrants. The most affected island has been El Hierro, where the entry of up to two large canoes has been recorded, leaving almost 400 illegal immigrants from Senegal.
– Another of the reactivations has been that of the Algerian route, which has triggered a high migratory pressure on the Balearic Islands that has resulted in the entry of some 20 boats with more than 300 illegal immigrants on board (mostly Algerians). This migratory pressure from Algeria has also affected the provinces of Alicante, Murcia and Almería. More than a dozen boats (with almost 200 migrants on board) have arrived in these provinces. Most of them are Algerians.
– On less active routes, Ceuta, Granada, Malaga and Cadiz have experienced the entry of a total of 30 illegal immigrants from Moroccan territory. Source, Spanish: https://gaceta.es/espana/mas-de-1-300-inmigrantes-ilegales-han-llegado-a-espana-en-la-ultima-semana-20240820-1625/

Cooking oil prices increase up to 70% in just fifteen days- new tool helps consumers monitor the price of oil in the supermarket: {Translation}
– The sharp rise in the price of olive oil in recent times – its price has tripled since 2021, according to INE data – has unleashed a wave of criticism of supermarkets, which consumers accuse of inflating prices to avoid the VAT reduction approved by the Government on this product in order not to lose margins. The Ministry of Agriculture has always maintained that these companies have adjusted their margins as much as possible to avoid passing on the entire increase to the consumer. But Facua denounce that there are still ‘establishments with disproportionate prices’.
– For this reason, they have launched a new website where consumers can check the variation in oil prices between different supermarkets, by days, fortnights and months. And the first data point to increases of more than 70% in the price of some sunflower oils in certain chains in just two weeks.
– ‘This is a tool with which we intend to empower consumers. The aim is that we can all become market watchdogs and know who is raising food prices, how much and when’, said Facua’s Secretary General, Rubén Sánchez, during the presentation of the new website. In addition to these two items, olive oil and sunflower oil, Facua has also added milk, and its idea is to expand them at the request of consumers. ‘The idea is to detect rises in a sector that is a great oligopoly and which boasts the highest levels of competition in Europe, but which in reality has identical prices in some foods, such as its own brands,’ the association denounces. ‘Not all the increases have been the result of increased costs, but rather of increasing margins at the cost of impoverishing Spanish families’, they add.
– Price fixing allegations. The organisation has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs after having detected, according to its analysis, that the various different supermarket chains have come to an agreement with each other, and have agreed on a set price of olive oil for their house brands. ‘We are confident that the ministry will end up opening a sanctioning file’, they say. Consumers ask the Government to act on airlines’ refusal to receive complaints: {Translation}
– The Federation of Consumers and Users CECU has asked the Ministers of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Óscar Puente and Pablo Bustinduy, respectively, to put an end to the practice of some airlines of refusing to receive notifications and complaints. CECU considers it ‘unprecedented’ that airlines that maintain activity within the national territory, that operate from Spanish airports and that are likely to generate conflicts with Spanish citizens, cannot be delivered with complaints in Spain, despite having staff and counters at the airports.
– With this way of operating, preventing users from communicating complaints or claims, according to the federation, these airlines are trying to avoid paying compensation.
– CECU already addressed last May the director of the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) to alert her about this practice and the answer, according to the federation, was that this does not represent an infringement of the regulations it supervises and that, therefore, it does not have the power to intervene in its monitoring and possible sanction. In view of this, CECU has now asked both ministers to take action to put an end to these practices, which are harmful to consumers. MALAGA PROVINCE
These are the two Malaga towns named amongst the cheapest places to rent in Spain:
– The price of rent is continuing to skyrocket in Malaga province with it now costing more than 15 euros per square metre a month on average, new data shows. The figures from property appraisal company Gesvalt put its year-on-year increase at 13.3%, with the price of rent increasing 37% over the past two years.
– Despite this, two towns in the province have slipped into the list of the cheapest places in Spain to rent: Ronda and Antequera, where the price is 6.7 and 7 euros, respectively, per square metre a month. This means the cost of renting in these two municipalities is less than half the average in the province and also in Malaga city, where it is also more than 15 euros per square metre a month, according to a recent report by real estate portal Idealista.
– In Idealista’s ranking of the cheapest towns in Spain to rent, Ronda is in 20th place, while Antequera is in 22nd place.
– The list of the cheapest places to rent in Spain is headed by the town of Úbeda in Jaén {pic}, where the average rent is around 5 euros per square metre a month. And another town in Jaén, Linares, occupies fifth place, with rent costing 5.80 euros per square metre a month. Also in Andalucía, rent in Lucena, in the province of Cordoba, does not reach six euros per square metre a month. MALAGA CITY
Salad tapas of €9 and drinks of €10 at the Malaga fair- “This ruins it”: {Translation, summary}
– The prices of the Malaga Fair are on everyone’s lips. The people of Malaga are constantly showing their dissatisfaction with the prices set in the Real: from the ‘cacharritos’, the stalls for eating and drinking to the fast food stalls. ‘We’ve had a tiny sandwich for 6 euros and they’ve given us a ridiculous plate of salad, which was more like a tapa, for 9 euros’, explained Carmen Mesa’s group of friends from Malaga to SUR, who usually go out every year to eat at the fair and say that “it’s getting more expensive all the time”.
– One of the most repeated phrases among those who attend the fair is the same. While strolling around the Real with their two children, the Siles family reveals that each fair they spend up to 1,000 euros. We go out almost every day, some to the ‘cacharritos’ with the children and others to eat something. We try to go to concerts or do something that is more economical, but this is getting to be like a robbery. In the stalls it used to cost €5 euros to eat a hamburger, now it costs €10, laments the family from Malaga. ‘A campero costs up to €19.50! I couldn’t believe it’, confirms Jorge Martínez pointing out the posted menu of one of the stalls in the Real.
– This is something that 27-year-olds Laura Iglesias and Almudena Matas agree on: ‘At a hamburger stand, what cost us €7 last year, this year they have charged us €9’. Another common complaint is not being able to spend the night drinking without going to the botellón (groups that brings their own alcohol). ‘Last night we were there at the bars and we won’t go back, we were surrounded by small children and it was a very different vibe than in previous years. Besides, the drinks in the stalls cost us 9 or 10 euros’, they explain.
– There are those who are cautious and prepared, such as mother Cristina Aguilar Pascual, who every September opens her piggy bank, with taking her children to the Malaga Fair in mind. The prices of the fair rides this year range from €4 for the cheapest to more than €10 for the most select ‘This is something that 27-year-olds Laura Iglesias and Almudena Matas agree on: ‘At a hamburger stand, what cost us 7 last year, this year they have charged us 9’. Another common complaint is being able to spend the night drinking without going to the botellón. ‘Last night we were there and we won’t go back, we were surrounded by small children and it was a very different atmosphere to ours. But of course, the drinks in the stalls cost us 9 or 10 euros’, they explain.
– There are those who are cautious and prepared, such as mother Cristina Aguilar Pascual, who every September opens her piggy bank with the Malaga Fair childrens rides in mind. ‘Every year I do it like this, otherwise it would be impossible because I have three children and there are a lot of expenses. The prices of the fair rides this year range from 4 euros for the cheapest to more than 10 euros for the most select rides. Even some children complain: ‘I remember when I used to come here it cost 2.50 euros and not this’, stresses the young Lidia López.’
– ‘This is a ruin’, says Jennifer Muñoz, who experienced her first day of the 2024 fair on Monday, a public holiday in Malaga. Lunch costs 30 euros per person, ‘but we still have the whole afternoon left. ‘Today no one can avoid that, the 100 euros per person per day. That’s how much my partner and I spent last night. “The thing is that everything is going up, the prices for living are getting higher and higher and of course, that has repercussions on the fair too,” adds the young Alejandro Montilla, who makes another comment about the nightlife stalls: “They told me that they wouldn’t let me in because of the clothes I was wearing and because of my physical appearance with tattoos, that’s not fair”.
– The truth is that in most of the casetas the menu is being extended with set menus, although they also offer individual dishes. From 25 euros for the cheapest to 70 euros for the most expensive and with reservations made weeks before the start of the Feria de Málaga: ‘Many people prefer to make a reservation and choose one of the set menus because we offer them an open bar’, says José Barea, one of the members of ‘Casaamigos-Botanic’. Although in other stalls, such as ‘Peña Los Ángeles’, they work without reservation and have among their star dishes the serranito with potatoes for 5 euros. ‘It’s the big attraction we have at night, it sells a lot’, says the member of the stand, Emilio Martínez.
– Opinions varied and offers ranged from 3 euros for a small sandwich to 70 euros for a menu for those who wanted to treat themselves to a luxury meal. Although there is a general feeling of discontent among the locals who come to the fair and who want to enjoy it for as many days as possible, but with a budget that fits in with the reality of their economy. A group dedicated to Internet scams for the sale of pets falls with victims in Nerja: {Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil of Navarra, through the Judicial Police Organic Unit (U.O.P.J.), has concluded Operation ‘DOG FAKE 2022’, which has led to the dismantling of a criminal group involved in multiple scams related to the fraudulent purchase and sale of pets over the internet. The operation has ended with the identification of nine people of Spanish nationality as alleged perpetrators of seven crimes of fraud, a crime of money laundering and a crime of belonging to a criminal group, the Guardia Civil reported in a statement.
– The operation originated in May 2022 after an increase in complaints related to scams in the purchase of puppies through internet portals. The modus operandi of the criminal group consisted of publishing false advertisements for the sale or adoption of pets on well-known platforms. After capturing the attention of the victims, the fraudsters gained their trust by sending images of the puppies and requesting various bank transfers or payments via Bizum under different concepts, such as transport, insurance, vaccinations and other fictitious expenses.
– Once they received the money, the perpetrators cut off all communication with the victims, who never received the purchased animal or the reimbursement of the money. People have been swindled in Sangüesa, Pamplona and Lerín in Navarra; Nerja in Málaga; Villalonga (Valencia), Castelldefels (Barcelona), and in Albacete. For example, on 15 May 2022, a citizen reported to the Guardia Civil in Sangüesa that he had been the victim of a scam when he tried to buy a puppy of the Dogo Argentino breed {pic} through a website selling puppies.
– This operation has involved the collaboration of the Bizkaia Civil Guard’s Equipo@Bizkaia, a unit that has been in charge of locating and investigating these seven people, three men and four women aged between 21 and 28, living in different towns in Bizkaia. Two more people have been identified who remain unaccounted for, and a search and arrest warrant has been issued for them. In a takedown notice filed at GitHub, News Media Alliance, which represents 2,200 news, magazine, and digital media publishers, explains that BPC violates its members rights under the DMCA’s anti-circumvention provisions.
– While this means there’s unlikely to be a future for BPC on GitHub, its future in general is unknown. Some projects can continue on other platforms but since BPC requires maintenance to function at its best, that may limit its options moving forward.

– Once again, passengers on the Seville-Malaga Media Distancia (MD) train have

Iberia Express will allow its customers to order food on board from their mobile phone: {Translation}
– Iberia Express announced on Tuesday that its customers will be able to order food on board from their mobile phone. Once on the plane, passengers will have to connect to Club Express Onboard to place their orders and receive them directly at their seat, without the need for a traditional trolley.
– Customers who submit their requests before the service is offered – which is done for all passengers on each flight – will have priority when it comes to receiving their meal. Similarly, they will also be able to place their orders after the trolley has passed, either to consume during the remaining flight time or to take away.
– For this summer season, Iberia Express has introduced more than 20 new items in its in-flight service and has extended its offer for vegetarian customers, although the most popular product on its flights to Europe continues to be the Iberian pork shoulder sandwich. This new system is integrated into the Club Express Onboard platform which, in addition to the gastronomic offer, also includes a wide variety of films, series and audio books, among other options, to make the journey more bearable. To enjoy it, you need to be a member of Club Express, a totally free option that already has 2.4 million customers who are also given a guaranteed minimum discount on all flights operated by Iberia Express.
– Iberia Express remains the most punctual airline in the first half of the year, as of the 12,000 flights operated by the airline that departed from Spanish airports during the first six months of the year, only 7% of them suffered some kind of interruption. Specifically, according to data from the airline itself, in June it operated a total of 3,813 flights, with a punctuality of 82.5% in arrivals, making it the most punctual low cost airline in Europe, and ranked 5th in the world according to Cirium’s ‘On-time Performance Report’.

Morocco Moves Toward Legalizing Cannabis Industry- Mohamed VI pardons thousands of cannabis producers on the anniversary of the “Revolution of the King and the People”: {Translation}
– Morocco’s King Mohammed VI pardoned 4,831 cannabis growers on Monday, in an unprecedented measure framed within the new legal framework that has governed the country since 2021 and that considers the ‘medicinal’ and industrial cultivation of marijuana to be legal.
– The measure comes as part of the celebrations for the 71st anniversary of the ‘Revolution of the King and the People’ and will end up benefiting farmers, who are now being sought for the new industry, as well as many others who had been prosecuted or convicted on cannabis related charges. It seeks to reintegrate these farmers into society, sending a message to society that such activity is now seen as legal. It is estimated that in the Moroccan provinces of Al Hoceima, Chaouen and Taounat alone there are around 60,000 families living off cannabis cultivation, according to information published by the EFE news agency.
– So far this year, Morocco, through the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis Activities (ANRAC), has approved nearly 3,000 licences aimed at legalising the activities of people involved in the cannabis business.
