SPAIN
Spain’s so called progress against unemployment is just another socialist hoax, Gov’t falsely inflates jobs numbers, almost a million more are unemployed than admitted: {Translation}
– Pedro Sánchez keeps bragging about his supposed economic ‘rocket ship’. But a whole network of statistical fiddling supports a trompe l’oeil that particularly targets the labour market. The truth is that the number of supposedly employed people – as they appear in the statistical system, especially through the mechanism of fixed-term employment – who are looking for a real job now stands at almost one million people after a rise in July of no less than 171,381 people affected.
– The studies were drawn up by experts from the USO trade union on the basis of official data. They have simply quantified real jobs, part-time jobs, hours actually worked, jobseekers in each group, people in training, etc. In other words, they have simply eliminated the optical effects of statistics that are increasingly full of deception and less and less transparent. And the conclusions are the opposite of those of the government.
– ‘The number of unemployed registered in the Public Employment Services Offices, at the end of July, has fallen by 10,830 people compared to the previous month’. Absolutely true. But we must dig deeper. ‘In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 12,378 people. There is a slightly lower decrease than last year’. ‘Is the labour market slowing down, as anticipated by the recent EPA?’, asks the USO research department.
– The detail of the official data answers this question: ‘The total number of unemployed (’people not working or not employed”) registered in the Public Employment Services reaches 3,089,167. These are distributed into registered unemployed: 2,550,237; other not in employment (in training): 195,049; and with limited availability or specific job demand: 343,881. In addition, we could add the 8,687 workers who at the end of the month were in an ERTE’.
– Well, of all these, the Government only recognises the unemployed officially registered as such: 2,550,237.
– Let us continue. ‘Nor are the job seekers with an employment relationship (which includes inactive discontinuous permanent workers) not counted in the total number of unemployed, which for yet another month is not broken down by the SEPE and which are included in the employed job seekers (although they are inactive, i.e. unemployed)’, warns the USO. And how many do they add up to? ’The latter have increased in July by 171,381. This would bring us, with an estimate of 900,000 inactive people who are ready to work, as the latest EPA does, to a total number of unemployed people of around 3.6 million’, the union’s experts explain. 1.1 million people above the number of unemployed that the government boasts about. Quite a deceptive trick. Or an example of manipulated and even distorted statistics.
– And the fact is that, ‘if we analyse the inter-annual variation of the number of unemployed we see how the one produced between June 2023 and 2024 is the worst (lower) of the last 11 years, except for 2019 and 2020, data directly affected by the pandemic’, adds USO.
– Moreover, qualitatively, the data does not pass the test of the usual political optimism either: ‘In July 2024, 589,007 employment contracts of an indefinite nature were registered, representing 38.71% of all contracts when in June this percentage was 41.15 and in May 43%’. And, ‘in cumulative magnitudes, 3,827,186 contracts for an indefinite duration have been made up to July 2024, representing a decrease of 165,634 (-4.15%) over the same period in 2023’.
– ‘In cumulative terms, full-time permanent contracts reached a total of 1,632,153 from January to July this year, with a decrease of 56,852 (-3.37%) compared to the same period in 2023. And part-time permanent contracts total 900,208, registering a reduction of 15,023 (-1.64%) compared to the same period last year’, he concludes. ANDALUCÍA
Nearly 50 residents of the Ceuta Immigrant Centre set course for Andalusia: {Translation}
– A total of 49 people of various nationalities left the Temporary Stay Centre for Immigrants (CETI) in Ceuta on Saturday and headed for Andalusia. They will be transferred to reception centres in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga.
– Among the residents, who took the ferry to Algeciras at 10:30 a.m., was a single woman, a native of Morocco. The men are mostly from sub-Saharan African and Maghreb countries, mainly Algeria, Guinea-Conakry and Sudan. People have also departed from Syria, Tunisia, Egypt, Mali, Chad and Guinea Bissau.
– The transfers to the peninsula are intended to alleviate the overcrowding suffered by the centre, with a maximum of 512 places. According to the latest data handled by the Government Delegation in Ceuta (updated every noon), the CETI has around 800 residents. Among these, the 49 who have left the facilities today have not been counted, nor those who may enter during this day. The last transfer to the mainland took place last Tuesday, when 16 people, mostly from Mali, Morocco and Sudan, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar to centres on the mainland.
– The reception centre for migrants of legal age is not the only one that is overcrowded. This Friday, the president of the local government (with responsibility for minors), Juan Vivas, appeared with Father Ángel, from Mensajeros de la Paz, to send a message of ‘help’ (the second in less than ten days) to the Autonomous Communities, to whom he asked for solidarity and a willingness to reach an agreement.
– Ceuta is currently hosting 459 minors, which represents an overcrowding of 422%. In August alone, 219 people were admitted. In June a contingency plan was signed to transfer 87 children to other parts of Spain. For the moment, according to the information provided by the regional government, only twenty have been transferred. For them, this is an ‘insufficient’ agreement and they have stated that they are working on a second contingency plan, as well as expressing the desire to reach a consensus between institutions and political parties on a ‘structural’ and ‘stable’ response to a ‘structural phenomenon’.

The public holiday calendar in Andalusia for 2025- Twelve official rest days: {Translation}
– The Andalusian government has published the official calendar of public holidays for 2025, a total of twelve days that will mark the work and leisure calendar in the region. According to Decree 99/2024 of 21 May, these public holidays are mandatory throughout the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.
*NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PUBLIC HOLIDAYS*
– The year 2025 will begin with the traditional New Year’s Day holiday on 1 January, which this year will fall on a Wednesday. This will be followed by 6 January, Monday, when the Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated, popularly known as the Day of the Three Wise Men.
– On Friday, 28 February, Andalusia Day, a day that commemorates Andalusian autonomy and which this year will allow Andalusians a long weekend of rest.
– Easter Week, one of the most important celebrations in Andalusia, will take place in April, with Maundy Thursday and Good Friday on 17 and 18 April, which will provide an extended festive break.
– On Thursday, 1 May, Labour Day, a bank holiday, will be celebrated. On Friday, 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a date traditionally devoted to religious celebrations and family activities, has been set for 15 August.
– In October, the 13th, Monday, will be Spain’s National Holiday, commemorating the discovery of America and allowing a break in the work calendar.
– November will bring with it All Saints’ Day on 1 November, which will fall on a Saturday. This is a day dedicated to the remembrance of the deceased and it is common for families to visit cemeteries.
– In December, Andalusia will have three important public holidays. On 6 December, Saturday, the Spanish Constitution Day will be celebrated, followed on 8 December, Monday, by the Immaculate Conception, another holiday with a deep-rooted religious tradition. Finally, on Thursday 25 December, Andalusians will enjoy Christmas Day, a day dedicated to family and religious celebrations.
– With these twelve public holidays, the 2025 calendar in Andalusia offers several opportunities to enjoy long weekends and bridge weekends. This calendar not only provides essential planning for workers, but is also a key reference for the tourism sector and commercial activities, which will adapt their offer to these peak periods. AXARQUÍA
Deep concern and unease following spate of 20 holiday home burglaries in Axarquia:
– Property owners in Torrox, Frigiliana and Nerja on the eastern side of Malaga province have reported a spike in the number of burglaries in holiday rental properties in recent weeks coinciding with the summer season.
– The last three attempted burglaries took place on Thursday 22 August, just as the pyro-musical show that kicked off this year’s Frigiliana 3 Culturas festival got under way. The owners of several rural houses received warnings on their mobile phones that video surveillance cameras had detected movement in their properties.
They quickly alerted the Guardia Civil and the rural guards in Frigiliana. The officers arrived within minutes and found several individuals in the area, who had smashed doors and windows in an attempt to gain access to the properties.
– . The three properties are located in the Nerja, in La Morea, which is on the border with the neighbouring town of Frigiliana.
As SUR has learned, these are three new cases that add to a list of some twenty burglaries that have been reported in recent months in rural areas of Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana. In most cases the burglars gained access to empty houses, but in one of the attempts they attacked one of the residents, causing her to fall down the stairs.
– Residents have set up WhatsApp groups and installed video surveillance cameras with motion and temperature sensors in an attempt to deter burglars. However, the thieves are not deterred, and in some cases they have tried to damage the cameras.
– As SUR has been able to confirm, at least three middle-aged men, all foreign nationals, have been arrested in recent weeks as the alleged perpetrators of several of the burglaries. Photo: E. TORROX
Water restricted Torrox hoping to become home to the next major golf course on the Costa del Sol:
– The plan for Torrox Costa on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol to have its first golf course, features in the town’s General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) approved in 1992. However, various setbacks and regulatory changes, as well as successive economic crises have meant that the initiative to develop more than 100 hectares of land on the seafront has not yet materialised.
– Torrox town hall is continuing to push ahead with the project which would see a new 18-hole golf course, around 4,000 homes and a marina. The mayor, Óscar Medina, who has been in office since 2015, said, “We also want to continue attracting tourists with high purchasing power, and for that the development of the Calaceite area on the coast is going to be fundamental thanks to its self-sufficient, sustainable and high quality infrastructure.”
– Medina said in a statement that “it will be an integrated action of residential and tourist facilities, with a profusion of green areas and many others free of construction”. He went on to say, “We have numerous investors interested in this sector, where in the future around 4,000 homes will be located,” and added, “It will be a source of wealth and employment for Torrox.” Photo: E. CALETA DE VELEZ
Princess Leonor’s surprise visit to a beach bar in Caleta de Vélez and Malaga Fair:
– The reservation was made by a person who did not identify themselves as calling from Spain’s Royal household. However, when the group of half a dozen young people arrived, aged between 18 and 20, along with several bodyguards, the owners of the El Saladero beach bar, located on the beachfront in Caleta de Vélez on the eastern strip of the Costa del Sol, sensed that it was someone important. “We thought it could be a politician, but after a while the waiters realised and recognised her, it was Princess Leonor”, Puri Molina, one of the managers of the typical coastal establishment, opened in 1965, told SUR this Friday morning.
– The royal visit happened at midday on Thursday, and initially went almost unnoticed. However, the customers on the terrace on the sand, which was full at that time, began to recognise her and several diners took out their mobile phones to capture the heiress to the Spanish throne. But the Royal household’s security team forced them to delete the images, and so far no snapshots or videos of the illustrious lunch have been released.
– Princess Leonor has made the most of her visit to Malaga. After being seen two days ago at a beach bar in Vélez-Málaga {pic, left}, the future queen went to party at the Malaga Fair with a group of friends. Leonor was seen at the Tití booth {pic, right}, where she arrived with five or six friends and a group of bodyguards.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Acts of vandalism in various parts of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga in the early hours of this Saturday: {Translation}
– This Saturday, 24 August, dawned with several unpleasant surprises in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. First, it was the Town Hall of Vélez-Málaga itself who reported through official social media profiles of acts of vandalism in the vicinity of the municipal cemetery of Vélez-Málaga.
– ‘These behaviours are unacceptable, and from the Town Hall we want to make it clear that we will not tolerate any form of vandalism in our city. The Local Police are already working to identify those responsible and take the corresponding legal measures,’ they said in their publication.
– Shortly afterwards, also through these channels, the Mayor’s Office of Torre del Mar published on social media that there had been a break-in and vandalism of the lifeguard post on the beach next to the Torre del Mar fairgrounds. ‘This surveillance and lifeguard area provides a service to the public and we cannot allow people to pay for their frustrations with what belongs to everyone,’ they denounced. GRANADA
Demonstration asks to stop windmill projects in the area of the Costa Tropical: {Translation}
– A demonstration organised by the platform ‘Say no! on the Costa Tropical’ called late on Friday morning in Torrenueva for a halt to the construction of two wind farms in the area. Chanting slogans such as ‘renewables yes but not like this’, some 120 people, according to figures from the Government Sub-delegation in Granada, marched from the Peñón de Jolúcar to the Town Hall via the promenade, also attended by the mayor of the municipality, Plácido José Lara.
– ‘The reason for the demonstration is to show opposition to the two projects being processed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition for the construction of two mega offshore wind farms in the Alboran Sea off the coast of Granada,’ explained the organisers beforehand. Currently in the period of public review, ‘given the scant public information that the government has offered about these projects and concerned about the scale of these projects and their consequences in their immediate surroundings’, this group of citizens from Granada decided to organise themselves, firstly, to inform about them and, secondly, to collect signatures and plead against the construction of these ‘megaparks’.
– ‘The area will go from being a natural environment to being considered an ‘industrialisable’ area, indicating that ‘the appearance of a sustainable project based on clean and renewable energy is a fallacy, given that the environmental impact that these two mega-projects will cause’ would be ‘greater than the benefits’, which, in their opinion, ‘can be summed up as zero for the citizens of Granada’.
– Among the disadvantages, they have cited the ‘destruction of the seabed, endangered flora and fauna’, on the basis that ‘the cliffs and seabed of Calahonda-Castell de Ferro is a site of community interest that is part of the Natura 2000 network’ as well as the ‘devaluation of coastal housing’.
– For its part, through social networks, the Torrenueva Costa Town Council has explained that in the demonstration it has also shown its rejection of these projects ‘with the claim “Renewables yes, but not like this”. The Parliamentary Group for Andalusia and Podemos in the Andalusian autonomous community have also supported this demonstration ‘against windmills in the sea’, on the basis of which their representatives have articulated a parliamentary initiative. According to Alejandra Durán, member of parliament for Por Andalucía and secretary of Institutional Action for Podemos in the region, the aim is to take a stand against ‘speculative mega-projects that threaten the coast of Almería’ and Granada. Gergely Gulyás, Minister of Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, Responds To EU Sanctions For Immigration Violations- “We Will Send The New Arrivals To Brussels”: {Translation}
– Gergely Gulyás: Brussels wants to force us to let migrants in at all costs. Hungary has now been hit with a heavy fine for the practice, which was also adopted by the EU rule regarding transit zones. Unlike other countries, Hungary does not receive resources for border protection from Brussels. Therefore, the government asked the Minister of Justice to examine how part of the costs could be enforced in a lawsuit against Brussels.
– “If Brussels still wants to impose regulations on Hungary that make it impossible for migrants to be detained at the external border, then we will transport them to Brussels voluntarily and free of charge after complying with the European procedure,” said Gergely Gulyás, who called the sanctions intolerable and unfair. He added that Hungary does not want to pay a daily allowance as a punishment indefinitely, they are happy to take the migrants to Brussels, and negotiate their further care there. Photo: Lajos Soós. Stabbing rampage in German city of Solingen killed three people and injured eight:
– A suspect in German police custody following a stabbing rampage in the city of Solingen that killed three people and injured eight is a 26-year-old Syrian man, authorities said on Sunday as they looked into his possible links with Islamic State.
– The incident, along with the militant group’s claim of responsibility, sparked concern among some politicians who urged enhanced security, tighter curbs on weapons, stiffer punishment for violent crimes, and limits to immigration.
– The attack occurred during a festival on Friday evening in a market square where live bands were playing to celebrate Solingen’s 650-year history. Mourners made a makeshift memorial near the scene.
– The suspect turned himself in late on Saturday and admitted to the crime, Duesseldorf police and prosecutors said in a joint statement early on Sunday. German federal prosecutors identified the Syrian man as Issa Al H., omitting his family name because of German privacy laws, and said he was suspected of being a member of Islamic State.
– Prosecutors said “due to his radical Islamist convictions” he tried to kill as many people as possible that he considered to be non-believers, stabbing them repeatedly in the neck and upper body. UPDATE, 3pm Sunday: A failed deportation that ended in tragedy- German mass stabber had been ordered to leave the country: {Translation, summary}
– The perpetrator of the mass stabbing at a festival in Solingen is a 26-year-old Syrian national who had been living in Germany since 2022, where he applied for asylum, but had a deportation order that was ultimately not executed, Der Spiegel reports. The attacker, who killed three people and injured eight others on Friday, was due to be deported last year to Bulgaria, which was to take charge of him, but his attempted transfer failed in June 2023.
– According to Der Spiegel, Issa al H. arrived in Germany at the end of December 2022 and shortly afterwards applied for asylum at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. The Dublin Regulation, which determines which EU Member State should be responsible for processing an asylum application, decided that Bulgaria would be the country responsible for his asylum procedure because it was his country of entry into the European Union (EU). The German authorities then submitted a transfer request, to which the Bulgarians agreed, and the young Syrian was therefore to be transferred there.
– However, the deportation order to Bulgaria, which should have been executed last year, was postponed. The German authorities were unable to locate the individual, who at the time was in a shelter in Paderborn in June 2023, as he had gone into hiding, and was declared temporarily untraceable. He reappeared a few weeks later, without the authorities issuing a warrant for his arrest due to his lack of a criminal record.
– Finally, the deadline for his transfer to Bulgaria expired in August last year and Germany took over his case. At the end of 2023, the Federal Republic granted him a temporary residence permit as a beneficiary of subsidiary protection, coming from a country at war to which it was not possible to return him, and he was transferred in September 2023 to the town of Solingen, where he lived until last Friday, when he carried out the fatal knife attack.
– The German public prosecutor’s office is now investigating this individual on suspicion of committing a triple murder, multiple attempted murders and possible membership of a jihadist organisation. Military emergency- Israel bombs Lebanon as it identifies imminent ‘extensive attack’: {Translation, summary}
– Israel launched a series of bombing raids in Lebanon early Sunday morning after identifying that Hezbollah was preparing ‘an extensive attack against Israel’, something the Shiite militia itself acknowledged. The Israel Defense Forces ‘identified that the Hezbollah terrorist organisation is preparing to fire missiles and rockets into Israeli territory. In response to these threats, forces are attacking terrorist targets in Lebanon,’ the Israeli army said in a statement. Israeli air force fighter jets are attacking what Israel considers ‘an imminent threat to the citizens’ of the Jewish state.
– Hezbollah, for its part, announced the launch of a ‘revenge’ attack against Israel that consists of bombing Israeli bases and positions with a barrage of more than 320 Katyusha rockets to clear the way for ‘attack drones on their way into the depths of the Zionist entity’.
– Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is directing operations from the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv, along with Defence Minister Yoav Galant, who declared a military state of emergency and contacted his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, to update him. Israel’s political and security cabinet was convened for a meeting at the same military base.
– The Israeli strategy constitutes an ‘act of self-defence’, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a video message in which he stressed that Israeli forces ‘are attacking terrorist targets in Lebanon, from which Hezbollah planned to launch its attacks against Israeli civilians’. The pro-Iranian Shia group ‘will fire rockets, and possibly missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, into Israeli territory,’ he warned, calling it ‘an extensive attack on Israel’ from areas near civilian homes in southern Lebanon. ‘We warn civilians located in areas where Hezbollah operates to move away from danger immediately for their own safety,’ warning that the Shi’ite group’s offensive “risks dragging the people of Lebanon, the people of Israel and the entire region into a wider escalation”.
– Anti-aircraft sirens have been activated continuously in the Lebanese border area since the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Magen David Adom emergency service raised ‘its alert status to the highest level throughout Israel’, although so far it has received no reports of casualties. Israel says 100 of its planes have attacked thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers in Lebanon: {Translation, summary}
– The Israeli air force used about 100 fighter jets to attack thousands of rocket launchers of the Shi’ite Hezbollah group in Lebanon, which were aimed at northern and central Israel, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said. Israel early this morning launched a series of large-scale bombardments against some 40 positions of the group in southern Lebanon to ‘thwart an imminent massive attack’ on Israeli territory, officials said. ‘We will continue to eliminate threats and intensively attack the Hezbollah terrorist organisation,’ the spokesman stressed.
– The Israeli army’s international media spokesman, Nadav Shoshani, said the rocket launchers were concentrated at some 40 launch sites across southern Lebanon. While most were intended to strike the north of the country, some were aimed at targets in central Israel, which were missed by Israeli strikes.
Shoshani stressed that so far ‘very little damage’ has been detected in the north of the country.
– The bulk of the operation, which Israel described as ‘real-time self-defence’, took place shortly before 05:00 local time (02:00 GMT).
– The Lebanese group, meanwhile, announced the launch of a large-scale retaliatory ‘air strike’ against Israel with ‘a large number of drones’, which are aimed at ‘qualitative Israeli targets’ inside the country. The group said in two statements issued in the early hours of Sunday morning that the first phase of the strikes have ‘gone according to plan’ and have hit at least eleven military bases both on Israeli territory and in the Golan Heights, artillery positions and barracks. Princess Leonor will enter the Marín Naval School alone on Thursday: {Translation, summary}
– The Princess of Asturias, Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, will enter this Thursday, the 29th, as a first-year midshipman at the Naval Military School in Marín (Pontevedra), alone and without the presence of the King. Felipe VI, foreseeably, will not attend the event as, according to the agenda published by the Royal Household, he will be in Barcelona for the America’s Cup sailing competition.
– Leonor, during the course, will share a room with four women and will embark in January, like all the students, on the Juan Sebastián Elcano school-ship.
– This is the second time that the heiress to the Spanish throne will be at the School, as on 16 July, coinciding with the feast of the Virgin of Carmen, she accompanied her father at the presentation of the Royal Dispatches to the new Navy officers and at the swearing in of 76 first-year students.
– Last Monday, more than a hundred new students entered the School. In total, taking into account all the planned incorporations, there are 146 students, 93 without qualifications and 53 with previous qualifications, including 17 women and several applicants from outside Spain. Attack On Free Speech? Billionaire Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested in France:
– Telegram is one of the most downloaded apps in the world, with predictions it will achieve close to one billion users within a year. It offers end-to-end encryption – effectively protecting data from being intercepted – and has a strong focus on privacy. This focus makes the app popular with pro-democracy movements and other protesters in countries with strict laws.
– But it has also been used for criminal activity and recently by far-right activists who sparked riots in the UK over the Southport stabbings.
– Pavel Durov, the billionaire founder of encrypted messaging app Telegram, has been arrested in France. The 39-year-old tech chief was reportedly detained after his private jet landed at Le Bourget airport on the outskirts of Paris. News broadcasters BFMTV and TF1 have quoted unnamed sources as saying the Russian-born entrepreneur – who became a French citizen in 2021 – was the subject of a search warrant. Both outlets suggest the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram and potential criminal activity by users.
– Neither French police, the Interior Ministry, nor Telegram have commented on those claims.
