ANDALUCÍA
Socialists Push For An Independent Andalucia, To Follow The Catalan Plan: {Translation, summary}
– Federalism: A mode of political organization that unites separate states within an overarching political system in a way that allows each to maintain its own integrity.
– The PSOE in Andalucia is promoting the debate on the reform of autonomous financing that the new Catalan model is leading to, and points to another, even more convoluted debate, that of statutory developments, that of exploring the limits of self-government, that of decentralisation.
– María Jesús Montero appealed for ‘a fresh look’ after mentioning a process that ‘is along the lines of federalisation’. This is a new model, one in which money is matched to the competences assumed by each autonomous community. This is the model of Catalonia, Montero and Juan Espadas explained yesterday, and they expressed vigorous support for an Andalusia that advances in self-government and assumes the same competences contemplated in Catalan Plan. It is the method used in Catalonia to receive more funding, the socialist leaders defended yesterday in front of the members of the Andalusian interparliamentary
– The debate has gone beyond the calculations and criteria that should govern the next reform of the regional funding system, which has been out of date for a decade. This debate has been a consequence of the financial model that the PSC and Esquerra Republicana have wrested from the central government, a Basque-style agreement or a singular financing, whatever it is called. ‘We will make it compatible for Catalonia to have a singular financing like other autonomous communities that have the vocation to have it’, said the Deputy Secretary General and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, yesterday at the meeting of the Andalusian Interparliamentary Assembly held in Seville. The leader, who encouraged the public to read the agreement with Catalonia, referred to the text because ‘what it speaks of is the vocation for self-government that the statutes of autonomy and solidarity contemplate’. For the Finance Minister, the majority of the statutes contain elements to continue with self-government.
– And from the Catalan model, based on self-government and solidarity, to a general model in the tradition of the PSOE’s historic federalism. ‘It is a next step’, Montero pointed out, which ’is along the lines of federalisation and which involves accompanying resources with competences. It is a new approach for a system that has to be renewed and in which there must be resources for the system as a whole. The socialists know that these are issues that provoke discomfort in the ranks of the PP, ‘because they have not believed and never will believe in self-government’. The PSOE believes it has found ammunition if it is able to convey the benefits of the new model to public opinion.

AXARQUÍA
Andalucía puts pressure on central government to speed up desalination plant in drought-stricken Axarquía:
– The summer is coming to an end and while hoping that there is considerable rainfall in autumn, Malaga province faces a looming crisis with its reservoirs at 19.2 per cent of their capacity, with just 117 cubic hectometres stored, compared to the 147 they had a year ago. Given this scenario, the project to build a desalination plant in the Axarquía – Malaga province’s eastern side – is urgent to be able to supply both homes and the area’s vast agricultural sector.
– The Andalusian government’s spokesperson for agriculture, fisheries, water and rural development, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has announced that he plans to meet the secretary of state for the environment, Hugo Morán, in the first half of September to put pressure on the central government to start the Axarquía plant as well as one in Almeria province. He added that there were quite a few pending projects in the region that are the responsibility of the central government.
– Fernández-Pacheco pointed out that the situation is “critical” above all in some areas such as Malaga city, the Axarquía and the lower Guadalhorce, although he indicated that the drought committees at the beginning of the summer set out a road map which they are complying with “to the letter”. MALAGA PROVINCE
State of the reservoirs in the province of Malaga today:
MALAGA CITY
Malaga city 1,000 years older than previously thought as new remains are uncovered near cathedral:
– Excavation carried out in Calle Postigo de Abades to install the crane in readiness for work on the new roof reveals pieces. They date from 5,000 years ago, putting the city’s occupation back by a thousand years to the Chalcolithic or Copper Age (after Neolithic and before the Bronze Age).
– This great historical journey was made possible by the fact that the excavations were able to go down four and a half metres, which made it possible to obtain a stratigraphy (the study of strata, or layers) from the Chalcolithic period to the present day.
From top to bottom, the remains of an Islamic house and pottery from the Almohad period gave way to earlier traces with remains of Byzantine warehouses and Roman construction, mainly fish salting tanks such as those found throughout this area from Calle Alcazabilla and the Roman Theatre, although floor tiles with carved inscriptions have also been found and are currently being studied.
– “During the Roman period in Malaga the whole city became a fish factory in the Lower Imperial period, so in order to build the basins, they used a strong foundation that destroyed what was underneath. The good thing about this excavation is that a couple of adjoining rooms without basins were found, which allowed us to drill down to find Punic, Phoenician and, finally, Chalcolithic remains,” explained Juan de Dios Ramírez. A resident of Malaga finds hundreds of prehistoric remains, more than 50,000 years old, on Sacaba beach: {Translation, summary}
– Paleolithic carved stones, such as Mousterian points, raederas or denticulates, as well as molluscs and animal skeletal remains from the Holocene period, are some of the hundreds of prehistoric remains with more than 50,000 years of history, which a resident of Malaga has found by chance in some mounds of sand deposited on the Sacaba beach, at the western end of the city.
– In total there are more than 2,000 pieces that Juan María Álvarez, a photographer by profession, has been collecting over the last few months on the surface of this large dune of dredged earth, destined for the replenishment of beach sand. And there are still many more: there is not a day that goes by that he does not find new material.
– According to the Junta, this material comes from a construction site located very close to the beach and outside archaeological zoning. When it was notified of the discovery, the foundations and structure of the new building had already been completed, so nothing could be verified. ‘It is to be assumed that the same soil was previously extracted from the coast and used as land fill, so ‘it is practically impossible to find out its exact origin’, says the Junta.
– Researcher Prof. José Ramos insists on the need to investigate the origin of the spill, given that there is Palaeolithic and other more recent material, probably Neolithic, which should be protected because of its great historical interest. Throughout the history of the Bay of Málaga, there have been significant rises and falls in sea level, and studies confirm the existence of platforms, currently under water, which constituted the territory of exploitation and development of Pleistocene hunter-gatherer societies. FRIGILIANA
They rescue the lifeless body of an elderly man fallen on a terrace in Frigiliana: {Translation, summary}
– The emergency services announced Friday (31/8) they have rescued the lifeless body of an elderly man who has fallen down a bank in the municipality of Frigiliana, according to the Emergency Coordination Centre.
– The incident took place in an area of land belonging to the deceased’s family in
Camino Maldonado. Minutes after 16.00, the 112 telephone number received a call from a private individual who reported that he had located a relative who had fallen down a bank, and requested a rescue as the area was difficult to access. The Fire Brigade rescued the lifeless body of an 82 year old man and transferred him to the funeral vehicle. The first indications point to an accidental fall of the elderly man, who would have suffered a traumatism when he fell, according to police sources. GRANADA
12 immigrants arrested, including 5 minors, upon arriving at a beach in Granada: {Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil arrested 12 people of North African origin, including five minors, on Saturday on a beach in Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, in Granada, who were on board a high-powered inflatable boat with which they reached the coast of Granada. The boat reached the beach of Cambriles at around 15.30 hours, although the migrants had jumped into the water before reaching the shore and the boat then fled out to sea.
– Eleven of the detainees have been transferred to the port of Motril, where they have been treated to check their state of health, and the twelfth has been taken by the Guardia Civil to the Hospital of Motril. German far-right party AfD poised for state election victory in east:
– A far-right party became the biggest force in a German state parliament for the first time since the second world war, exit polls showed on Sunday, while a new populist force on the left established a firm foothold in the country’s political landscape.
– Voters in two closely watched elections in the former communist east made their dissatisfaction with Germany’s mainstream political parties clear, putting the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in the top spot in Thuringia, with between 31.2 and 33.2% of the vote, and second place in Saxony, with 30.6%-31.4%, according to preliminary results.
– Although the outcome had been predicted for months, the centrist parties proved unable to reverse the trend and the results sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Turnout in both states was high, at about 74%. Full article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/sep/01/german-far-right-party-afd-state-election-victory-thuringia

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Much Of What Passes For News Today Is Crap Written By Robots- Welcome To The NEW WRITING- Annoying Features Of AI Written Articles, it repeats itself and lies in the pursuit of profits: {DigameXtra}
– Many publications are now using AI to write their articles. Both Sports Illustrated and The NY Times have released the majority of their writing staffs, and now rely on AI to produce most of their articles. Many of the most popular Spanish news outlets are doing the same. While this alone may not present problems, as AI can do research faster than a human, the parameters the human controlling the “AI writer” enters can present annoyances. Human writers use AI set parameters to attract readers to the article (clickbait headlines) and keep them on that page as long as possible (pageview time).
– When the human sets a minimum number of words for the article, AI will often reword previous paragraphs, and include these redundant rewrites later in the article to reach the total word goal.
– AI will often use a question as a headline, or intentionally leave out key terms, so the reader must click the headline and view the article to find out what it is really about.
– AI will often avoid the main point for several paragraphs, filling these with unnecessary, and even unrelated, background info, so the reader is forced to read well into the article before discovering the main point.
– Meanwhile, these same publications, with newly reduced staff and salary obligations, are demanding ever more from readers to view the content, effectively raising their prices as their expenses drop, making them more profitable. First we had to provide them our email addresses. Then we had to accept cookies, and permit them to sell our data, or buy a subscription. Then they started blocking VPNs. Now they fill pages with popups and overlay ads you must click to close to view the real content.
– The greed never ends. These publications used to manage to thrive on advertising income. But the managers have to show growing profits to keep their jobs. So while ever more sources of income are developed, less expensive (and thus lower quality) sources of new content are constantly pursued. These new income sources are all derived from exploiting the readers, padding their websites and publications with lower grade content, and then either by selling us something, collecting ever more intrusive data from us, or providing a new surface on which to place ads in front of us so they can sell more advertising.
– Remember, AI is trained on Internet content, and much of what you find on the Internet is rubbish. AI just takes it all in for processing, mashes it all together, rearranges it, and then feeds it back to users in a conversational format, following rules derived from its human written set of rules known as an algorithm, so it appears as a “human” response. AI does not “know” anything, it simply follows logic chains of linguistic models. AI does not understand anything, it has no morals, ethics or desire to tell the truth.
– I recently read an interesting insight from a tech website on this topic. It said you should treat AI like your “know it all” neighbor. Yes, he may be well informed on some topics, but half the time he’s full of crap.
