ANDALUCÍA

Andalucia criticises the government for the transfer of migrants to Alcalá (Seville)- ‘Zero official information and no coordination’: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian minister of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, Lopes López {pic}, has reproached the government of Pedro Sánchez on Monday for the transfer of more than a hundred migrants from Granada to the Seville town of Alcalá de Guadaíra, where they will be housed in a hotel, next to the Silos school, causing concern among parents. López regretted that this operation is being carried out with ‘zero official information and without coordination’.
– Speaking to the media at an event in Lepe (Huelva) with minors under the care of the regional government, the Andalusian minister said that she had found out ‘through the press’ about the transfer of migrants, stressing that ‘I have absolutely no knowledge of anything’. ‘The Spanish government – she continued – continues to act with its back to the autonomous communities and behind the backs of the local councils. That is its migration policy’.
– Loles López has insisted on accusing Sánchez’s government of ‘handing out’ migrants ‘as if they were packages from Amazon’. The councillor for Social Inclusion has not been the only one to comment on the move. Her colleague for Educational Development and Vocational Training, Carmen Castillo, on Monday sent a message of ‘calm’ to the parents of the Centre for Infant and Primary Education (Silos) in Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville) in view of the arrival this Monday of the first migrants, of a total of approximately 150 mainly from sub-Saharan countries, who will be accommodated in the Sandra hotel in the town after having been in a centre in Granada. A room in a shared apartment costs 367 euros per month in Andalucia: {Translation, summary}
– The price of a room in Andalucia in a shared apartment costs an average of 367 euros per month, which is 10.7% more than a year ago, according to the study “Shared housing in Spain in 2024” based on the prices of rental housing for the month of August of the last nine years of the Fotocasa Real Estate Index. The increase is 43.7% compared to five years ago (since 2019) and 66.5% more compared to nine years ago (2015), as reported in a statement by this real estate portal.
– The high prices of a complete home for rent, exceeding 1,000 euros on average, force tenants to look for shared housing to be able to meet the resulting expenses, which is why demand keeps prices rising, explains María Matos, Director of Studies and spokesperson for Fotocasa.
– Prices above 500 euros per month for a room in a shared apartment in August 2024 were recorded in Catalonia, with 611 euros; Balearic Islands with 576 euros; Madrid with 552 euros; Basque Country with 543 euros and Navarra with 512 euros.
– Following with a lower price are the communities of the Canary Islands with 423 euros, the Valencian Community with 420 euros; Andalusia with 367 euros; Cantabria with 358 euros; Aragón with 349 euros; Asturias with 330 euros; Galicia with 326 euros; Region of Murcia with 311 euros; La Rioja with 305; Castilla y León with 284 euros; Castilla-La Mancha with 269 euros/month and Extremadura with 239 euros/month. SEVILLA

The never-before-seen summer of the Nile virus mosquito- in 24 hours a single trap in Seville captured 16,000, almost a third of all those collected in Andalusia in 2023: {Translation, 1st 4 paragraphs only}
– This summer has been the summer of mosquitoes with the Nile virus. At least in Seville. Several experts predicted this in March, and on 14 March the Directorate General for Public Health of the Andalusian Ministry of Health brought together municipal representatives from the Seville towns of Coria del Río, La Puebla del Río, Dos Hermanas, Bollullos and Los Palacios, among others, to warn that the West Nile virus (WNV) was coming ‘strong’ this year due to conditions in the city, among others, to warn that the West Nile virus (WNV) was ‘strong’ this year due to the weather conditions – higher temperatures and abundant rainfall – and the subsequent decision of the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation to authorise the filling of the rice fields.
– Day by day, week by week, almost all the circumstances were in place for the culex mosquito, which transmits the disease to humans, to proliferate in an extraordinary way throughout this summer, and that is what has happened. One statistic illustrates the extent to which this has been the case: last year, 55,000 mosquitoes that could transmit the Nile virus were captured throughout Andalusia in the various traps that the Junta and the CSIC have installed at strategic points; this summer, in a single day, a trap located in Seville captured 16,000. The number of captures at the end of this campaign could be five or ten times that of the previous year.
– WNV was detected for the first time at the end of the last century in New York and spread throughout most of the United States, to the point that it is now the leading cause of viral meningoencephalitis in North America. In Spain it was detected for the first time in 2010 – the first case was in Cadiz – and since then it has spread throughout the country until it has become endemic, although this summer Seville has been – by far – the most affected Spanish province with 6 deaths and more than 60 diagnosed cases, figures that are already comparable to the 2020 outbreak, the largest ever recorded, which claimed 8 lives and 76 hospitalised. EUROPE

After Croatia, Serbia also brings back military conscription:
– Following in the footsteps of neighboring Croatia, Serbia is also bringing back military conscription in the form of a 75-day basic training for men and an option for similar volunteer service for women, announced Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
– Earlier this year, the Serbian General Staff considered that a four-month period of compulsory service would be necessary, but President Aleksandar Vučić has already talked of a shorter period of two and a half months. In his opinion, compulsory military service should be introduced in a way that does not scare people away and force them to leave the country. He said that 75 days is a really short period, “the least anyone can do for their country.”
He added that soldiers would also receive a financial allowance during their time in barracks, which would be a strain on the budget but would pay for itself many times over. The president also reiterated that Serbia is a militarily neutral state and is not preparing for war. ENERGY CRISIS

Italy Seeks Reversal of EU’s 2035 Combustion Engine Ban:
– Italian officials said the European Union’s plan to ban sales of new internal combustion engines from 2035 should be reviewed. “The ban must be changed,” Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como, on Saturday. Pichetto Fratin called the decision by the EU “absurd,” and dictated by an “ideological vision” along with a state-controlled approach to policy-making within the bloc. The plan needs changing in order to reflect different market realities amid the European auto industry’s slowdown”, “Europe needs a pragmatic vision, the ideological vision has failed. We need to acknowledge that,” he added.
– Italy’s officials have said they’re not against electric-vehicle development and production, but that it should be part of a more broader mix of automotive propulsion systems. HEALTH

Common food dye found to make skin and muscle temporarily transparent:
– Researchers have peered into the brains and bodies of living animals after discovering that a common food dye can make skin, muscle and connective tissues temporarily transparent. Applying the dye to the belly of a mouse made its liver, intestines and bladder clearly visible through the abdominal skin {pic}, while smearing it on the rodent’s scalp allowed scientists to see blood vessels in the animal’s brain.
– Treated skin regained its normal colour when the dye was washed off, according to researchers at Stanford University, who believe the procedure opens up a host of applications in humans, from locating injuries and finding veins for drawing blood to monitoring digestive disorders and spotting tumours. The red in the photo is dye, not blood. Full article: https://www.theguardian.com/science/article/2024/sep/05/common-food-dye-found-to-make-skin-and-muscle-temporarily-transparent
