– Last Friday (13 September) marked four months since the province’s main water reserves received some respite thanks to the heavy rains in March. However, on 13 May, the reservoir levels started to drop. Since then, they have lost a total of 60 cubic hectometres. This is more or less what Malaga city consumes in 14 months or two thirds of the annual needs of the Costa del Sol. Friday 13th also saw another milestone registered, with the water in storage no longer reaching 110 cubic hectometres, almost 30 less than this time last year. Torrox organizes 18 hiking routes: {Translation, summary}
– The Sports Department of Torrox Town Council has organised 18 new hiking routes in the provinces of Málaga, Granada, Córdoba and Jaén. Various natural parks and other enclaves and protected areas will be covered in a hobby that increasingly has more followers in the municipality.
– The first of these hiking routes will be on 22 September in El Canuto de la Utrera ‘Torcalito’ in Casares and will continue until 14 June next year, twice a month, in 
different parts of Andalusia. Fernandez has detailed in a statement that the registration fee for these routes, which even have a waiting list on numerous occasions, is ten euros, and include bus travel from Torrox and insurance. They will have various levels, although most of these routes are of low or medium difficulty to facilitate the participation of entire families.
– Some of the natural parks included in the routes are those of Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama; Sierra de las Nieves; Sierra Bermeja; Sierra Alpujata; Sierra Nevada; and the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo.
– Registrations can be made during the same week of each route in the municipal sports pavilion of La Granja de Torrox. France’s Breton steps down as EU commissioner:
– French European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton {pic} on Monday resigned from the bloc’s executive body with immediate effect, publishing a picture of his resignation letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social network X.
– Breton in the letter said von der Leyen “a few days ago” had asked France to withdraw his name as the country’s pick for the Commission “for personal reasons” in return for an “allegedly more influential portfolio”. “In light of these latest developments – further testimony to questionable governance – I have to conclude that I can no longer exercise my duties in the College”, Breton said in the letter.
– His announcement comes as von der Leyen finalises her list of commissioners following EU elections this summer. Each EU member state will have one seat at the Commission’s table, although their political weight and importance varies greatly depending on the portfolio. The French presidency and von der Leyen’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.

Trump safe after assassination attempt thwarted at Florida golf course:
– Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe on Sunday after the Secret Service foiled what the FBI called an apparent assassination attempt while he was golfing on his course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Several Secret Service agents fired on a gunman in bushes near the property line of the golf course after he was spotted a few hundred yards from where Trump was playing, law enforcement officials said. The suspect left an AK-47-style assault rifle and other items at the scene and fled in a vehicle and was later arrested.
– CNN, Fox News and The New York Times identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh {pic}, 58, of Hawaii, citing unidentified law enforcement officials. The FBI declined to comment and Reuters could not independently verify his identity. Reuters found profiles on X, Facebook, and LinkedIn for a Ryan Routh. Reuters was not able to confirm these were the suspect’s accounts and law enforcement agencies declined to comment, but public access to the Facebook and X profiles was removed hours after the shooting.

– A spokesman for the Iran-backed Houthis claimed in a video announcement on X that rebel forces launched a “new hypersonic ballistic missile” targeting Israel on Sunday morning. He also warned that additional attacks could be expected as the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack approaches.
– The Washington Post quoted Israel Defense Forces that said a surface-to-surface missile fired from Yemen hit an escalator in a train station in the central town of Modiin.
– No injuries were reported,” IDF said.
– “A Yemeni missile reached Israel after ’20 missiles failed to intercept’ it,” Nasruddin Amer, a Houthi media official, wrote on X.
– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told officials at the start of a cabinet meeting that the Houthis “should have known by now that we charge a heavy price for any attempt to harm us.”
– In July, the Houthis claimed responsibility for a kamikaze drone in Tel Aviv that killed one person. These direct attacks on Israel’s soil and various bombing raids by IDF forces on Yemen – only suggest a broadening conflict nears.

A small eclipse for a big moon: {Translation, summary}
– The partial lunar eclipse, the last one this year, will take place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and is an event that can be seen with the naked eye because it does not pose any danger – unlike solar eclipses – and does not require any special instrumentation.
– From Spain (both from the peninsula and from the Canary Islands) the eclipse will also be visible from 4:12 (peninsular time), it will reach its maximum at 4:44 and the Moon will recover all its splendour at 5:18, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
– The lunar eclipse, which occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, creating a cone of shadow, which in this case will be very small, is not exceptional in this case, as it is repeated between four and seven times a year (Sun or Moon), but it may be particularly striking as it coincides with one of the four ‘supermoons’ of 2024. Supermoons occur when the satellite’s full phase coincides with its closest approach to the Earth during its elliptical orbit, making it appear much larger and brighter to the eye.
– In total, from the beginning of the ‘penumbral’ phase of the eclipse, the complete phenomenon will last for 4 hours and 6 minutes, although the ‘partial’ phase – when the moon shows the shadow cast by the Earth – will last only 1 hour and 3 minutes.
– To the naked eye, the eclipse will cause a slight darkening – barely perceptible to the naked eye – of the entire lunar disc during the ‘penumbral’ phase and a small bite will appear during the ‘partial’ phase, although this will only affect 3.5 percent of the visible surfacer, according to several websites specialising in astronomical observation.
– After Wednesday’s eclipse, the moon will eclipse itself twice next year (on 14 March and 7 September), and in both cases it will be a total eclipse visible in many parts of the world, including Spain, from where it will also be possible to see the partial solar eclipse on 29 March, but not the one on 21 September next year.
– Wednesday’s eclipse coincides with the second of the year’s ‘supermoons’, popularly known in Spain as the ‘harvest moon’ because it coincides with the start of the harvest in many places, and comes four days before the next equinox – when daylight and night are practically the same – on 22 September, when autumn officially begins.
