Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The Madrid High Court allows Judge Peinado to investigate whether Begoña Gómez appropriated the Complutense’s software, while he investigates her other, related alleged crimes: {Translation, summary}
– The Provincial Court of Madrid has accepted that Judge Juan Carlos Peinado will also investigate the complaint filed by Hazte Oír against Begoña Gómez for allegedly having appropriated the software of the Complutense University, which had fallen to another Madrid court.
– The magistrates thus reject the appeal presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which wanted to prevent Peinado, who is already investigating Gómez for crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business, from also taking on this line of investigation. The 48th Court of Instruction of Madrid, to which Hazte Oír’s complaint was assigned, had sent the case to his court.
– It is for this reason that the judges understand that ‘there is a connection’ and support the decision of the head of the 48th Examining Court of Madrid to defer to Peinado’s case.
– ‘Given that it was precisely for this master’s degree program for which the software had been developed free of charge, and which, according to the complaint, Ms. Gómez had appropriated and offered it for free to potential clients. Gómez, offering it through the company Transformación Social Competitiva (TSC), and having filed on 10/10/2022 with the Patent and Trademark Office an application for a national trademark for the software in her personal capacity for TSC Transforma Plataforma, we understand that prima facie there does exist the connection appreciated by the head of the Court of Instruction No. 48 of Madrid’, concludes the Court.
– The magistrates explain that the decision is now in the hands of Judge Peinado, who will have to decide whether or not to admit the new complaint since, they argue, he ‘does have full knowledge of the facts on which the investigation is based’ about the professional activities of Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government.
– On 30 September, the Provincial Court is also expected to rule on the appeal filed by Gómez in which she asks for the case to be dismissed. In the document she accused Peinado of conducting an investigation with an ‘erratic procedural and material drift’, and explained that she was appealing as the ‘only possible procedural remedy’ to try to avoid ‘irreparable damage to the right of defence’.
– {On a side note, it appears Begoña Gómez has recently had some work done on on her face, see before and after pic below. -Ed.}

MALAGA PROVINCE
Dramatic situation for the Guadalhorce reservoir, which registers its historical minimum: {Translation}
– There is no precedent for such a low capacity in the Guadalhorce reservoir {pic}. The reservoir, once one of the most prolific in the province of Málaga, reached its historic low on Tuesday 24 September, recording only 9.30% of total capacity.
– This translates into a worrying figure of 11.69 cubic hectometres (hm3), a figure that has never been reached since records began in October 1997.
– The situation, far from improving, continues to worsen due to the lack of rainfall. The figure is even more worrying if we take into account that it has lost more than double its capacity in just one year. On 24 September 2023, the water in the reservoir stood at 28.42 hm3. This is a far cry from the 3 June 2013, the date on which the Guadalhorce reservoir last reached 100% capacity.
– The most normal thing would be for this trend to continue and, therefore, for us to find an increasingly pronounced historic low. According to the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency, it does not look like it will rain too much in the province of Malaga over the next few days.
– The differences between reservoirs in the province of Malaga are becoming increasingly pronounced. There are some reservoirs that remain at acceptable levels. This is the case of the Concepción reservoir, located on the outskirts of Marbella. It is the one with the highest capacity at the moment, with 43.57% and 25.07 hm3. Others have also improved their situation considerably. The best example can be found in the reservoir of La Viñuela. It reached had reached 7% of its total capacity and now stands at 14.27%. TORROX
Torrox residents ask for the removal of an electrical transformer from next to their homes, and completion of other overdue works: {Translation, summary}
– The residents of the Torrox neighborhood Generación del 27 have been waiting for more than a year for an electrical transformer next to their homes to be removed. However, despite the promises of the PP government team, with an absolute majority, the work has not yet been carried out by the Sevillana-Endesa company.
– The socialist spokesperson, Mari Nieves Ramírez, together with members of the local executive, has visited the neighborhood to meet with the affected neighbors, addressing their demands first-hand. During the visit, Ramírez assured that “they continue working day by day so that in the next municipal plenary session the demands of the residents can be heard.”
– One of the residents’ main complaints is the lack of response from the mayor, Óscar Medina (PP), who, “days before the municipal elections, promised to remove the electrical transformer located on the ground floor of block 7.” “More than a year has passed and the neighbors have not received a single call or response from the PP government,” Ramírez denounced.
– The socialist spokesperson has exposed “…the serious situation that the residents of the neighborhood are experiencing. Can you imagine sleeping on an electrical transformer, enduring night noises, without knowing what repercussions it may have on your health and with the constant manipulation of operators?”
*Fiber optics and other improvements*
– But the demands go beyond the transformer. Ramírez has indicated in a statement that the neighborhood “is still waiting for the installation of fiber optics, for the urban bus to reach the area, for the renovation of the banks, for the repair of the safety guards and for solutions to the problems of parking”. “Added to this is the need to signpost the streets, improve cleaning and fix the sidewalks,” added the socialist deputy for the province in Congress.
– The spokesperson has been forceful. “Every day there are more people tired of Óscar Medina’s excuses. We socialists are here to work for our municipality, being the speaker for all our neighbors, no matter where they live or where they come from.”
– For its part, this newspaper has tried, without success so far, to obtain an assessment from the PP government team in the Torrox City Council. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/vecinos-torrox-piden-retirada-transformado-electrico-junto-casas-20240924142100-nt.html
VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Velez-Malaga approves a 25% increase in council salaries without a public vote: {Translation}
– The bipartite government team of PP and GIPMTM in the Vélez-Málaga Town Hall {pic} on Monday used its absolute majority to approve a general increase in the salaries of the corporation’s politicians of almost 25% in total. Thus, according to the documentation, to which SUR has had access, approved as a matter of urgency in the plenary session, the remuneration of the 25 councillors goes from 694,933.06 euros per year to 866,600.
– Specifically, the salaries of the mayor, Jesús Lupiáñez (PP), will rise by 17% to 78,000 euros gross per year; the first deputy mayor, Jesús Atencia (GIPMTM), by 12% to 75,000 euros; the salaries of the ten free councillors will increase by a further 30% to 57,000 euros gross per year; the same percentage will increase the salary of the only councillor with partial freedom, at 80%, Manuel Gutiérrez (PP), who will receive 45,600 euros gross per year. The opposition spokespersons, PSOE and Andalucía por Sí, will also see their allowance increase by 12% to 49,000 euros gross per year.
– The agreement also provides for the re-setting of limits on the allowances received by the councillors, after they were abolished last February, which caused a great deal of political controversy. Thus, they are set at a maximum of 4,500 euros per month for those who are part of the local government board, 4,500 for those who have delegations and 2,200 for those who do not. Bonuses for attending plenary sessions remain at 600 euros and at 450 euros for informative commissions. {€600 to attend a meeting of a few hours? Why do public servants on a salary deserve a €200/hr bonus for just doing their jobs? -Ed.}
– The mayor defended the fact that these increases ‘are included in the approved
budget’ and that they were approved ‘following the opposition’s request for an increase in the allocations to political groups’. ‘We have decided to do so in this way,’ he said. The councillor for Finance has assured that the salaries of Velez’s political posts had not been increased since 2019. ‘What we are doing is a small equalisation like other municipalities in the area, such as Estepona, Fuengirola or Malaga capital,’ he said in the plenary session.
*Criticism from the opposition*
– The matter has been rejected by Andalucía por Sí, PSOE and Vox and the abstention of the non-attached councillor, Elías García. The opposition criticised the ‘obscurantism’ of the bipartite government with this increase in salaries and asked for the matter to remain on the table, without success.
– For his part, the former PP mayor of Velez, Francisco Delgado, who governed between 2007 and 2008 and from 2011 to 2015, has been very critical of this salary increase. In a message posted on his social networks he has asked his party colleagues to rectify the situation: ‘My party, the one I led, has always defended the same ideas and principles; and acted responsibly in difficult times, even giving up our extra pay to help others. Our voters and supporters do not deserve it. To rectify is wise’, he wrote.
– For his part, the former socialist mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, who governed between 2015 and 2023, has backed the salary increase. In a message on his social networks he said: ‘I am aware of the barrage of criticism I will receive, but I have to be consistent and, of course, with what I have always defended’. ‘Vélez is a big city and, as such, we must consider all its structures, including our representatives, councillors and councilwomen. Therefore, we must aspire to be on a par with average cities in terms of services and why not in terms of our councillors’ allowances. Enough of complexes and hypocrisy and let us work along these lines. Let none of them be ashamed and let them live up to our demands’.
– On the other hand, the session also addressed the mandatory introduction of a municipal rubbish tax in Vélez-Málaga as of January 1st. The bipartite government estimates that 3,750,000 euros will be collected for this concept, with an average of 143 euros per cadastral unit. However, the corresponding ordinance has not yet been approved. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/velez-aprueba-subida-sueldos-corporacion-20240923205410-nt.html
MIDDLE EAST
Israel Continues To Use Tech Weapons Against Hezbollah- now allegedly dropping leaflets with ‘very dangerous’ barcodes onto Lebanon:
– Hezbollah’s media office said on Tuesday that Israel was dropping leaflets with a “very dangerous” barcode on them onto Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley, warning that scanning the code by phone would “withdraw all information” from any device (send a full data dump to servers in Israel). There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Hezbollah’s media office did not say if anything else was written on the flyers.

‘Immune-compromised’ woman uses euthanasia ‘suicide pod’ to end her life – several arrested:
– A 64-year-old US woman this week became the first person to use a “suicide pod” to end her life – and several people have been detained in Switzerland over the death. The arrested individuals are under investigation for alleged incitement and accessory to suicide.
– The woman, a Midwesterner who was not named publicly, died Monday afternoon in the portable, 3D-printed chamber called a Sarco, short for “sarcophagus” – and dubbed the “Tesla of euthanasia” – near the Swiss-German border, according to the assisted-suicide group Exit International.
– The woman suffered from “severe immune compromise,” the group said. Switzerland is one of the few countries where foreigners can travel to legally end their lives through assisted suicide, which must not involve a doctor but can include outside help. But Swiss officials said the controversial pod – which floods its chamber with nitrogen, causing the user’s oxygen levels to plummet to deadly levels – has not yet been approved for use.
– Florian Willet, the co-president of Exit International’s Swiss affiliate, the Last Resort, was the only witness to the woman’s death, which he described as “peaceful, fast and dignified,” the organization said. The incident supposedly took place near a forest cabin in Merishausen, the regional police said. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Do you support the development of AI?:
– {DigameXtra} AI has actually been around for longer than most people are aware of, coming of age in the middle of the last decade. Why is it now becoming ubiquitous, invading everything in the computer world? Simple answer. The market for smartphones, tablets and computers is now saturated. Everyone who wants one now has some sort of device to access the internet. The only new sales come from replacing old devices. Big tech needed to come up with a new product to sell, to feed their insatiable appetite for more profits. AI is that new product.
– {Diariosur.es, translation} The closing of the Sun&Tech Málaga 2024 conference ended up being a mixture of quiz and reflection on AI. In this closure they enlisted the presenter, Nuria Triguero, and the audienc, to answer this ‘Definitive test to find out if you are pro-AI or anti-AI’. And you? We invite you to consider these topics that are common in most people’s lives. In each question, we included a reflection to consider.
1. The autonomous car.
Fewer accidents vs. fewer jobs for professional drivers. The autonomous car will not give you the talk of a taxi driver; but if your AI driven car makes an error and causes an accident, who will the insurance companies blame, you or the software developer?
2. Energy cost.
AI consumes a huge amount of electricity and water, but could incentivise new energy development. {Yeah, that’s what we were told about bitcoin mining, and that huge power drain has yet to stimulate new energy source development. Countries now struggle to replace their existing power sources with green tech, how will they deal with the huge new power demands from AI facilities and data centers? Reopen the shuttered nuke plants? -Ed.} What would you say if you had to choose between AI or avocados in a water shortage? Are you willing to support restarting nuclear power plants to run AI?
3. Photography.
Is a photo still a photo if we completely alter it with AI? Thanks to AI, anyone can have a photo with a celebrity {with or without clothes}.
4. Music.
Now everyone can make a pitch-perfect song about any specific topic. What effect will this have on human musicians and true creativity?
5. Simulating people.
Burt Reynolds’ voice can read you any book, but it is his heirs who profit from the fame of a dead person.
6. Talking to PDFs.
Now you can even ask questions to the electricity bill, no reading comprehension required, AI can even create a podcast for you!
7. Glasses.
AI is starting to be integrated into glasses, this may aid the blind and people who have had eye surgery. However, smart-glasses may also be the ultimate spying device.
8. Love.
People are starting to fall in love with AI – an emotional hack or a solution to loneliness?
9. Moderation.
AI censors our messages so we don’t cross certain boundaries, will it coerce our freedom? Generative AI models, tend to stifle creativity and there will be ideological control by corporate groups.
10. Brain implants.
Elon Musk believes that AI will be embedded in brain chips {pic} to enhance our capabilities. Can you imagine putting a washing machine on without getting out of bed? However, there is a risk of having your brain ‘hacked’ with false memories, bad data, unwanted behavior modifications, and a lot more.
