Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

SPAIN
The Government raises the VAT on food at the height of the tax collection record: {Translation}
– New tax collection feast in the Treasury. The Tax Agency (AEAT) has published the latest revenue data up to August, and the balance has once again been very lucrative for the department of María Jesús Montero. Thus, in the first eight months of the year, the State coffers received a record 189,348 million Euros in taxes, 7.4% more than in the same period a year earlier. As usual, personal income tax was once again the Treasury’s star tax: 88,482 million euros in revenue up to August (up 7.2%).
– This is followed by VAT, which contributed 63,458 million so far in 2024, 7.6% more and a new milestone for the Treasury. And this figure exceeds by 4,474 million the amount collected in the same period of the previous year, largely thanks to the suffocation of inflation, which is bringing substantial benefits to Montero’s department. Since August 2021, the CPI has risen by a whopping 16%.
– Official data from the Tax Agency reveal that the VAT rebate on some food products subtracted 442 million euros in revenue from the Treasury. However, as we have just seen, the Treasury has been compensated by 10 times this tax relief due to the increase in the collection of those 4,474 million mentioned above.
– And despite this collection success, the Treasury’s collection voracity does not cease. Yesterday, Tuesday, the Government put an end to the late VAT rebate approved at the end of 2022 for a few food products (it left out of the rebate fish and meat).
– Thus, since yesterday, the VAT on milk, bread, flour, fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, tubers, cheese, eggs and olive oil has gone from 0% to 2%. On the other hand, seed oils (such as sunflower oil, sesame oil, etc.) and all types of pasta (whether dry or fresh pasta) have gone from 5% to 7.5%.
– In addition, it is worth remembering that the Government launched on January 1, 2023 a new tax that has directly affected the food sector. This is the tax on non-reusable plastic packaging with which the Treasury has been collecting succulent amounts of money at the expense of the taxpayer since its implementation. For example, from January to August 2023, the Treasury collected 402 million euros for this new tax figure, while so far in 2024, it has obtained 397 million, just 1.3% less. Left-wing Adelante Andalucía criticizes the use of the Rota base (Cádiz) in defense of Israel- “They are putting Andalusia into the war”: {Translation, summary}
– The spokesman for Adelante Andalucía, José Ignacio García {pic}, has demanded this Wednesday that the Andalusian Government “say something” about a possible use of the Rota Base (Cádiz) by the United States to get involved in the defense of Israel against the attack it suffered this Tuesday by Iran, as he has warned that “they are putting Andalusia at war, they are putting Andalusia in danger”.
– At a press conference in the Parliament of Andalusia, Garcia has considered that the war scenario that is experienced in the Middle East on successive fronts “is no stranger to Andalusia”, as he has argued that “the base of Rota has participated in the transport and operation of Israel launched missiles” from the destroyers that are stationed there.
– This claim for explanations to the Andalusian Administration has been extended to the State Administration as it has raised if “will not say anything to the people of Rota”, convinced that “something will have to say” to a situation that has been described as “dangerous” by the fact that the United States “puts these bases” in a military operation involving third countries.
– Garcia has lamented that Andalusia “is stealing our sovereignty” and, consequently, is “a land of servitude always at the service of the United States”, so it has demanded that this country “does not use Andalusian territory”, in addition to the background reproach that “always aligned with the interests of the State of Israel.
– The spokesman for Adelante has raised his concern about “how it affects Andalusia” the fact that “a country (referring to Israel) is simultaneously attacking four countries,” in addition to exposing “the genocide” suffered by the Palestinian people, before asking “how can it be painted as a victim of something” and lamenting that “the international community comes out to condemn the attack of Iran when the genocide is not condemned”, while proclaiming to feel “no sympathy for the criminal regime of the Ayatollahs in Iran”, and concluded that “Israel is not a democracy”. BENALMÁDENA
We don’t need no stinkin’ referendum- Benalmádena to install 150 video surveillance cameras throughout the town declares Mayor Juan Antonio Lara, without the public approving the highly intrusive project at public expense:
– Mayor Juan Antonio Lara presided over the celebration where he was accompanied by Local Police chief Juan Carlos Merchán. During his speech, he pointed out “the firm commitment” of the town hall to provide the police with more resources. “Security in tourist areas is crucial and fundamental to guarantee the competitiveness of our destination and it is our obligation to provide you with all the necessary tools so that you can carry out your work with the maximum guarantees,” Antonio Lara said.
– The 150 closed-circuit video surveillance cameras will be installed at more than 50 locations throughout the municipality, he added. “We continue to enhance the value of the drone unit, which has been complemented this year,” Antonio Lara also said.
– {These cameras use AI (artificial intelligence) powered facial recognition in public spaces, a highly controversial practice that has been banned in much of Europe, as these cameras create a large number of human rights and data protection violations. The first outbreak of bluetongue in Andalusia was detected in a town in Huelva: {Translation}
– The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food confirmed yesterday the detection of the first tongue outbreak in a sheep farm in the Huelva municipality of Rosal de la Frontera, along with two other outbreaks in the towns of Cheles and Alconchel, in Badajoz. The farms are located near the border with Portugal, where last week the Portuguese authorities reported the first cases of this disease in their livestock.
– Yesterday, the Ministry urgently issued an order to now apply restrictions on animal movements in these areas of Huelva and Badajoz to prevent the expansion of these outbreaks. The fall of Vuhledar- Ukrainian forces withdraw after two and a half years of fighting as Russians continue to advance:
– The Ukrainian stronghold in the Donetsk region has fallen to the Russian offensive. Kyiv forces have withdrawn from the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian military command confirmed on Wednesday. According to the crowd-sourced monitoring website DeepState, Russian soldiers entered the coal-mining city in the Donbas on Tuesday, advancing from the West and South. The US-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported earlier that Moscow’s forces have also been advancing northeast of the town.
– Geolocated footage published on Monday and Tuesday shows Russian forces planting Russian flags and freely operating in various parts of Vuhledar, and Russian military bloggers claimed on Tuesday that Russian forces seized the settlement. Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin said the situation on Tuesday was “very difficult”. “The enemy is already nearly in the centre of the city,” he told Ukrainian TV. By Wednesday, the Khortytsia army group officially announced that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn. MIDDLE EAST
Israel’s Army announces the deployment of another division in southern Lebanon after the start of the invasion: {Translation, summary}
– The Israeli Army announced this Wednesday the deployment of another division in southern Lebanon to participate in the invasion of the country, launched after more than eleven months of fighting with the Shiite militia party Hezbollah on the border.
– Israel on Tuesday described its invasion of Lebanon as a “selective and limited” operation against Hezbollah’s “terrorist targets and infrastructure,” arguing that they pose “an immediate and real threat to Israeli settlements on the northern border.”
– The announced offensive is part of Operation ‘Northern Arrows’, the military campaign that began a little over a week ago against Hezbollah targets and will take place “at the same time as the fighting in Gaza and other areas.” Israeli attacks have increased since mid-September and have killed a large part of Hezbollah’s leadership, including its secretary general, Hasan Nasrallah, who died last Friday in a bombing in Beirut. TRAVEL
Revolt against new traveler controls- 28 new info collection requirements from visitors by hotels & holiday rentals as of 2 Dec: {Translation, summary}
– The home address of the person staying at the establishment; his or her cell phone number; the means of payment to be used, whether it is cash, bank card or a bizum type application; the IBAN number of the bank account linked to the payment; confirm the actual identity of the cardholder; and even the relationship to accompanying person(s) if they are under 18 years of age. These are just some of the 28 new customer data that the Ministry of the Interior intends to require from hotel establishments, owners of tourist homes, car rental companies and travel agencies as of December 2. These have triggered a revolt of the companies of the affected sectors, which not only doubt the fit of this initiative in the Community and data protection standard but also their real capacity to meet this flow of information.
– “Intolerable attack on privacy”, ‘impossible requirements to comply with’, ‘competitive disadvantage’- the sectors are astonished by a regulation that they have been trying to stop or at least rationalize for more than two years without Interior having listened to their demands.
– This Friday they will make a new attempt. As ABC has been able to confirm, the Tourism Council of CEOE -representing the affected sectors- will hold a meeting with the Ministry of the Interior to discuss the possibility of a new postponement of the entry into force of the decree, scheduled for December 2.

Dogs understand better if you talk to them slowly: {Translation}
– Humans talk more slowly to our dogs, and this slower pace matches the receptive capabilities of our pets, allowing them to better understand our orders. This is the conclusion of a study published in the journal ‘PLOS Biology’ by Eloïse Déaux from the University of Geneva in Switzerland and her team.
– Dogs respond to human speech, even though they cannot produce human sounds
on their own. To better understand how people and dogs communicate, scientists analyzed the vocal sounds of 30 dogs. They also analyzed the sounds of 27 humans in five languages speaking to other people, and 22 humans in those languages speaking to dogs. The scientists also used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the brain responses to speech in humans and dogs.
– Humans are much faster speakers than dogs, the study showed, with a speaking speed of about four syllables per second, while dogs bark, growl, bark and whine at a rate of about two vocalizations per second.
– When talking to dogs {for the study}, humans slowed their speech to about three syllables per second. EEG signals from humans and canines showed that dogs’ neural responses to speech focus on delta rhythms, while humans’ responses to speech focus on faster theta rhythms. The authors suggest that humans and dogs have different vocal processing systems and that slowing down our speech when talking to pets may have ultimately helped us connect with them better.
– The authors add: “What is even more interesting is that while dogs use a slow pace to process speech and, contrary to popular belief, they need both content and prosody (patterns of stress & intonation) to successfully understand it.” Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/ciencia/habitat/noticia-perros-entienden-mejor-si-les-habla-despacio-20241002105435.html

Pink Floyd Sells Music Rights to Sony for $400 Million:
– After years of false starts, the iconic British rock band Pink Floyd has agreed to sell their recorded-music and name-and-likeness rights to Sony Music for approximately $400 million, sources confirm to Variety.
– The deal, one of the largest of many in recent years, apparently has finally concluded despite decades of ongoing infighting and bitter words between the bandmembers, notably chief songwriters Roger Waters and David Gilmour; also involved are drummer Nick Mason and the estates of keyboardist Richard Wright and founding singer-songwriter Roger “Syd” Barrett.
– The deal comprises recorded-music rights but not songwriting, which is held by the individual writers, as well as name-and-likeness, which includes merchandise, theatrical and similar rights. While Pink Floyd was famously anonymous as personalities, presumably most if not all of the iconic artwork on their albums, which was largely designed by the British firm Hipgnosis, is included.
