Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Spain issues international appeal to identify 46 deceased women: {Translation, summary}
– Six European countries, including Spain, together with INTERPOL have launched an international appeal to uncover the identities of 46 women, some of whom died decades ago.
– With the joint initiative, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands are joining forces to solve the cases of these women, most of whom were murdered or died in suspicious or unclear circumstances.
– Interior explains that the appeal builds on the success of the ‘Identify Me’ campaign in May 2023 to identify 22 deceased women, to which some 1,800 citizens responded. Now, the campaign has been expanded to include more unsolved cases from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as others from new participating countries – France, Italy and Spain.
– Spain is participating with seven cases of unidentified women who have died violent deaths and are being investigated by different police forces, said National Police Inspector Francisco Javier Alvarez, head of INTERPOL Spain’s National Central Bureau Group 5.
– Information on each of the cases, as well as facial reconstructions of some of the women, is available on INTERPOL’s website. There are also images of items, such as jewelry and clothing, which were discovered in the various land and water environments where the remains were abandoned. “We want to identify the deceased women, provide answers to the families and have the victims get justice. But we cannot do it alone. That is why we are calling on the public to join us in this work. Your help can make a difference,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock. Minister Yolanda Díaz insists that she will reduce the working day to 37.5 hours in 2025 and waives the cut to 38.5 in 2024, will present the bill to Congress soon: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Labor claims that the working week will be reduced to 37.5 hours a week by 2025, but disregards the interim milestone it had agreed for this year, when the maximum legal working week was to be cut to 38.5 hours. It will do it all at once next year. This is confirmed by sources close to Yolanda Díaz and it has been disclosed by the second vice-president herself in the press conference after the Council of Ministers this Tuesday.
– “The government agreement says that on December 31, 2025 the entire salaried population will see its working day reduced by two and a half hours and it will be fulfilled,” she said, omitting the intermediate step of 38.5 hours agreed in 2024.
– It’s not yet a done deal. The bill to enforce reduction of working hours needs the support of a majority in Parliament to pass, where the balance of forces supporting the Executive is precarious. Junts and PNV do not seem willing to let this measure go ahead. For this reason, the Government is trying to reach an agreement in the social dialogue in which the employers are also present to try to convince these political forces to support the bill.

The European Parliament PP blames Sánchez for generating a call effect of migrants with his “incompetent” management and asks the EU to act in the face of the crisis: {Translation}
– The MEP and vice president of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, has denounced Tuesday that the “incompetent” management and “negligence” of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, open the doors of irregular immigration to the entire European continent. Therefore, he has asked the European Union (EU) to act on the migration crisis.
– In a debate before the plenary session of the European Parliament prior to the
European Council to be held on October 17 and 18, Montserrat stressed the importance of addressing the migration crisis. “Either the Union takes control of its borders, or the border crisis will take control of Europe,” she warned.
“Immigration is not a new problem, but the numbers in countries like Spain are getting worse every year due to inaction, incompetence and lack of leadership from politicians like Pedro Sánchez,” she has acknowledged.
– In this sense, the former minister has accused the leader of the PSOE of generating the call effect with his incompetence: “The real call effect is irresponsibility. The real effect is called Pedro Sánchez”.
– Montserrat recalled the more than 42,000 irregular arrivals of adults, and especially minors, to the Spanish coasts in the first nine months of the year. Likewise, she has exposed the “extreme situation” in which the southern border of Europe, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla find themselves. “Sánchez thinks that the mafias are stopped by promising papers in Europe to 250,000 people from Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal, and on top of that refusing to ask for more help from Europe to avoid so many deaths in the ocean and to give a definitive solution to the untenable situation of unaccompanied minors,” he said.
– She added that the Migration Pact is clear: “Our borders are weak, the returns are ineffective, the responsibility of the member states for this problem is unequal and the legal mechanisms for entry into Europe are insufficient”. “If we think that this crisis will be solved with empty rhetoric, I announce that the problems of the south today will be the problems of the north tomorrow,” she warned the hemicycle.
– “The EPP will continue to call for more resources and protection for our security forces, more deployment of Frontex and more coordination between countries. Because this is how crises are faced. With loyalty”, Montserrat remarked. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5641833/0/pp-culpa-sanchez-efecto-llamada-migrantes-incompetente-gestion-pide-ue-actuar/

The Marbella Prosecutor’s Office investigates a businessman accused of selling false therapies to hundreds of people with cancer: {Translation}
– The Prosecutor’s Office of Marbella is investigating a businessman founder and CEO of Inmucura Med SL. in relation to false innovative cancer therapies after he allegedly sold illegal therapies to hundreds of people with cancer.
– The Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced the opening of proceedings for alleged crimes of fraud and against public health allegedly committed by the company, whose founder and CEO is Johannes Schumacher, according to El País, following an investigation by an international consortium of journalists.
– Schumacher, an investment banking professional who has managed funds in the Cayman Islands and claims to have been an advisor to the Russian government, created a company that has been offering treatment with dendritic cells to hundreds of patients, most of them in critical stages of the disease, in several European countries for almost a decade, with revenues of millions of euros.
– The Junta de Andalucía already received in December 2019 a complaint against the company for illegal use of advanced therapy drugs and the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) itself alerted that the company offered a cancer treatment with dendritic cells, which would be considered an illegal advanced therapy drug.
– In 2022, a complaint to the Junta de Andalucía also resulted in sanctions for this company. Although the company claims that it no longer operates in Spain, the international conglomerate of journalists has detected that Immucura has continued to offer its treatments in 2024 and after contacting El País with the Spanish health authorities, the Prosecutor’s Office of Marbella has reported the opening of proceedings for two alleged crimes, fraud and against public health. MALAGA PROVINCE
On Friday the probability of rains in Malaga increases: {Translation, summary}
– Thursday will be a day of transition with cloudy skies and hardly any rain, the probability does not exceed 20% in any area of the province, although weak and occasional rainfall in the mountains can not be ruled out. The cloudiness will increase at the end of the day and it is for Friday when more widespread rains are expected in the province and, moreover, these will be more generous.
– From midnight on Friday it is expected to rain throughout the Serrania de Ronda, Guadalhorce Valley and Western Costa del Sol, including Malaga city. From 06:00 hours the rain will spread throughout the province, reaching also the region of Antequera and Axarquia.
– If the forecast is maintained, it will be raining all day, until 18:00 hours,
throughout Malaga; from that time would cease in the capital, south of Antequera and Axarquia. The Aemet still does not speak of how many liters are estimated to fall on Friday in each municipality, but the chances of rainfall are quite high throughout the province, with Jubrique, Manilva, Gaucin, Cortes de la Frontera, Benaojan and Pujerra the municipalities of Malaga where more rain is expected, with 100% probability all day. The same percentage is observed until 12:00 hours in Istan, Marbella, Cuevas del Becerro, Ronda, Cañete la Real or El Burgo, and in Campillos, Fuente de Piedra and Alameda after that time.
– In the case of Malaga capital, the highest probability will be between 06:00 and 12:00, with 75%; and from 18:00 falls to 45%. The same happens in Torremolinos. And in other municipalities of the coast as Benalmádena, Mijas or Fuengirola, the possibility of rain is 80% in the morning and then drops to 50%.
– In the Guadalhorce Valley, the percentages range between 80 and 90% in the municipalities of Ardales, Casarabonela, Alora and Coin. And in the afternoon they also drop, to 65 or 50%.
– The same scheme is repeated in the Axarquia, although in this region the most abundant water will arrive later (from 12:00 to 18:00). In that time frame, the municipalities with more rainfall will be those of the interior: Alfarnate (85%), Colmenar (80%), Canillas de Aceituno, Almáchar or Casabermeja (75%). In Vélez-Málaga the probability is 70%, the same as in Rincón de la Victoria and La Viñuela, as well as in other localities such as Cómpeta or Frigiliana. The lowest is in Torrox (65%).
– It is expected that this rainfall will return in the early hours of Saturday, and that both Saturday and Sunday can continue raining throughout the province of Malaga, with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms in the regions of Antequera and Axarquia. The Aemet expects that this rainy episode will last until 12:00 hours on Sunday, although in the afternoon there could still be some weaker and isolated showers. Environmentalists warn of abandoned greenhouse that they say is polluting Costa del Sol river:
– Environmental action group Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza (GENA)-Ecologistas en Acción has called on Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol to take action to remove construction and agricultural waste from the mouth of the Río Vélez. In a communication sent to the town hall on Friday 4 October, GENA said that the mouth of the river, which lies to the west of Torre del Mar, is “a place that due to its biological importance should be better controlled by the municipal authorities”. The statement went on to say that “rubbish is frequently dumped” and that it should be left “under the N-340 to make it easier and more effective to be collected by the municipal cleaning services”
– According to the GENA Axarquía spokesperson, the biologist Rafael Yus, “despite this, we have not yet seen any movement on the part of the municipal cleaning services to clear up this waste present in the aforementioned area”. Similarly, as reported by GENA in a statement, “along the Vélez riverbed, upstream to the Camino de Remanantes, every day we can see new rubbish of all kinds dumped, furniture, appliances, packaging and more frequently construction debris”.
– The association added, “for months now, this association has witnessed a large greenhouse next to the Camino de la Culebra, in the delta of the Vélez river, whose plastic cover has been dismantled, but not the architecture of tubes that maintains the structure”. The statement continued: “The plastics are torn by the wind, the pieces are transported to land and sea, constituting an unacceptable source of microplastics, whose composition is mainly low density polyethylene, although we do not rule out that its composition is ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride or even polycarbonate.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/axarquia/ecologists-denounce-that-an-abandoned-greenhouse-disperses-20241008081224-nt.html

Ukraine admits Russian forces reach another key frontline city and now controls just under a fifth of Ukrainian territory:
– Russian forces have entered the outskirts of the eastern Ukraine frontline city of Toretsk, Ukraine’s military said late on Monday, less than a week after the fall of the bastion town of Vuhledar.
“The situation is unstable, fighting is taking place literally at every entrance (to the city),” Anastasiia Bobovnikova, spokesperson of the Operational Tactical Group “Luhansk” told Ukraine’s national broadcaster, “the Russians have entered the eastern outskirts of the city.” There was no immediate comment from the Russian defence ministry, which said earlier on Monday that its forces inflicted damage to manpower and equipment near several settlements in the area, including near Toretsk.
– Russian military bloggers, including a group of military analysts who ran the prominent Rybar Telegram channel, said Russian troops continue to advance towards the centre of the town.
– The advance of Moscow’s forces – just like the capture of Vuhledar last week – has underlined Russia’s vast superiority in men and materiel as Ukraine pleads for more weapons from the Western allies that have been supporting it.
– Russia, which now controls just under a fifth of Ukrainian territory, has been advancing towards Toretsk since August, taking village by village with infantry aided by the increased use of the highly destructive guided bombs. With Ukraine now losing more and more territory, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has ordered his top brass do “everything that can be done” to minimise Moscow’s advance along the frontline.
– For Ukraine, Toretsk has been a frontline city for 10 years now, as it is close to Ukraine’s territories seized by Russian-backed separatists in 2014. It has since become an anchor of Kyiv’s fortifications.
– For Moscow, seizing the town, known until 2016 under the Soviet name of Dzerzhinsk, after Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Soviet secret police, would bring closer President Vladimir Putin’s goal of taking the Donbas region. Hurricane Milton reaches Category 5 strength again as it approaches Florida:
– Hurricane Milton was upgraded back to a Category 5 storm as it churns toward Florida’s west coast. The ferocious storm could land a once-in-a-century direct hit on Tampa and St. Petersburg, engulfing the populous region with towering storm surges and turning debris from Helene’s devastation 12 days ago into projectiles.
– Landfall: Milton is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida late Wednesday as a Category 3 storm, which have winds of 111-129 mph (180-210 kph).
– Path: The storm is forecast to cross central Florida and to dump as much as 18 inches (46 centimeters) of rain while heading toward the Atlantic Ocean. That track would largely spare other states ravaged by Helene, which killed at least 230 people on its path from Florida to the Carolinas. Update regarding restrictions on generic meds sold from pharmacies- Pharmacies file a lawsuit against the SAS agreement regarding the dispensing of generic medications: {Translation}
– The Andalusian Confederation of Pharmacy Offices (Ceofa) has taken to court the addendum to the agreement signed by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) and the Andalusian Council of Official Associations of Pharmacists (Cacof), whose “main objective is to promote the use of generics versus branded”, while raising an asset claim for the “economic damage” of the addendum, which “directly affects Andalusian pharmacies”.
– In a press release, the Confederation has argued that the duty of the offices to pay 5% of their generic invoicing to the SAS since May 2024 is an “unfair economic burden and not adjusted to law” that is causing estimated losses of 800 euros per month to each pharmacy. “In the long term, these losses could reach 40,000 euros per pharmacy on average,” should the measure be maintained over the next four years.
– “Ceofa already has experience in successfully pursuing this type of patrimonial
claims. In a similar case, the Confederation won a lawsuit against the SAS for the imposition of conditions on the dispensing of Hospital Diagnostic drugs,” recalled the entity, which is ”confident that the necessary legal requirements will be met for pharmacies to recover the amounts lost due to the 2024 addendum.” According to its president, Leopoldo González, “this past experience has encouraged us to try a new appeal for the good of Andalusian pharmacists”.
– The claim affects all Andalusian provinces, since the addendum “imposes” the same conditions on all pharmacies in the region. With this appeal, Ceofa seeks “not only to reverse the economic losses suffered by its associates, but also to put an end to what they consider a disproportionate and illegal measure that threatens the sustainability of pharmacies in Andalusia”.
– The pharmaceutical employers’ association has encouraged its members to join the appeal, stressing the “viability” of the process and “avoid the losses caused by this addendum”. With previous experience in this type of litigation, “Ceofa expects to recover the amounts withheld by the SAS since May 2024 and the interest accrued”.
– The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) decided months ago to “meet” the requirement made by the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) in relation to the addendum to the agreement between the SAS and the Andalusian Council of Official Associations of Pharmacists (Cacof) in which it was specified that “when prescribing medicines by active ingredient that have generics, they will promote the dispensing” of the generics.
– However, it maintained in the addendum that, on a monthly basis, pharmacists will allocate to the SAS 5% of the amount of the invoicing they make for the sale of generics, calculated according to the Retail Price including VAT. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/espana/andalucia/farmacias-demandan-sas-acuerdo-medicamentos-genericos-piden-20241008140437-nts.html
{Note: There is another problem not addressed here. Many common meds available over the counter do have a notice in very small print saying “medicamento sujecta a prescripcion medica” (prescription medication), that everyone has ignored for years. This provides the pharmacies an excuse to deny you over-the-counter access to the generic version you have bought without a prescription in the past. This in turn allows them to push the branded, more expensive version, available at a higher cost, and also with the same restriction warning, which if you are willing to pay more, the pharmacist will ignore. This is pharmaceutical blackmail, as I explained in previous articles. But now we know why they do it: they want to avoid selling a less expensive item, for which 5% must be given to the SAS, and rather sell the more expensive branded version, with a higher profit margin and which is immune from the 5% SAS kickback. As always, it’s all about the money. -Ed.}

The AEMPS withdraws several batches of two brands of ibuprofen after they failed quality controls: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has announced the withdrawal from the market of ibuprofen Pensavital 400 MG (film-coated tablets EFG 20 tablets) and ibuprofen Mabo-Farma 400 MG (film-coated tablets EFG, 20 tablets) after “finding out-of-specification results in the dissolution test” in both drugs, i.e. after they failed quality controls.
– According to the AEMPS in a statement, the affected drugs in the case of Pensavital ibuprofen, manufactured by Farmalider S.A., are from lot 464X with an expiration date of 31/07/2026.
– Regarding the case of ibuprofen Mabo-Farma, manufactured by Farmalider S.A., lot 468X with expiration date 31/07/2026; lot 469X with expiration date 31/07/2026, and lot 470X with expiration date 31/07/2026 are affected.
– The AEMPS states that the defects found in both drugs “do not pose a vital risk to the patient”. Even so, it has ordered the withdrawal from the market of all the units distributed of the affected batches and the return to the laboratory through the usual channels. This recall will be monitored by the autonomous communities.

Health withdraws a weight loss promoting food supplement for containing sibutramine, banned since 2010: {Translation, summary}
– The AEMPS has ordered the withdrawal of the food supplement Juliette capsule L-Carnitine Lepidum capsules due to the presence of sibutramine not declared on the labeling. According to the analysis carried out by the official control laboratory of the AEMPS, this product contains this active substance in a quantity sufficient to restore, correct or modify a physiological function by exerting a pharmacological action, which gives it the legal status of a medicine. However, it does not appear on the label, but deceptively indicates a series of ingredients of plant origin, giving false information about its safety, which could cause serious damage to the health of people who consume it, as explained by the AEMPS. The tournament can take away prize money, and the case could also be sent to the ATP Member Fines Committee for further investigation. A tour spokesman said no decision has yet been made on the matter.
– The 17th-ranked Tiafoe was angered by being docked his first serve for a time violation at 5-5 in the decisive tiebreaker.
Pinoargote ruled that Tiafoe was not making a genuine attempt to serve when he tossed the ball in the air at the baseline as the serve clock was set to expire. Tiafoe initially protested before continuing to play; he lost that point and the next to close the match. Tiafoe, a 26-year-old from Maryland, congratulated Safiullin at the net before turning toward the umpire and shouting the first expletives. Tiafoe passed to the other side of the net toward his chair and said the umpire messed up the match. Peppering his words with more swearing, the American said he had been playing on court for three hours. The fines for watching Spanish football on ‘pirate’ platforms are here, €450 and the majority “agree to pay”: {Translation, summary}
– The first fines for consuming soccer on ‘pirate’ platforms have already reached the offenders, a €450 sanction that “a great part of them accepted to pay”, according to what the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, recently assured in an interview offered recently to Forbes magazine.
– Specifically, the fines are focused on the local market with the aim of reducing the 300 million losses that occur, slightly below the 400 million lost outside Spain.
– “A large part of the fans agreed to pay, and subsequently stopped pirating,” Tebas said about the fines that have allegedly reached the offenders of an exact amount of 450.16 euros.
– Tebas, who places among his priorities the fight against piracy, remains determined to tackle a problem of complex regulation, but in which he is already seeing the first results of his efforts.
