The Supreme Court unanimously decides to charge State Attorney General García Ortiz, investigating an attorney general for the first time: {Translation, summary}
– The Supreme Court (TS) has unanimously agreed to open an investigation against the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, and against the chief provincial prosecutor of Madrid, Pilar Rodríguez Fernández, for the alleged crime of disclosure of secrets of which they are accused by the partner of the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. This is an unprecedented measure, since it is the first time that the head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office is charged. After learning of his indictment, García Ortiz has announced he will not step down from office.
– Diaz Ayuso’s boyfriend, Alberto Gonzalez Amador, took to court the accusation of dissemination of an informative note at 10.20 a.m. on February 14, in which the Madrid Prosecutor’s Office reported the exchange of e-mails between his lawyer and the prosecutor of the case, Julian Salto, for the alleged tax fraud for which he is being investigated. García Ortiz assumed responsibility for this communication.
– In the same line, the Supreme Court establishes as criminal acts the dissemination of the informative note, a “publication that would not have taken place without the authorization and express order of the State Attorney General”, which determines the competence of the Second Chamber of the High Court.
– The TS considers that, from the reasoned statement sent by the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM), as well as from the complaints and denunciations presented, among others by Gonzalez Amador, the imputation to Garcia Ortiz and Rodriguez Fernandez of a crime of disclosure of secrets, as a consequence of the disclosure of the informative note where the chronology of the investigation proceedings related to Gonzalez Amador, was made clear. An association of prosecutors calls for the resignation of the Attorney General after his indictment- “It can’t go on another minute”: {Translation, summary}
– The Independent Professional Association of Prosecutors (APIF) has demanded
this Wednesday the resignation of the State Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz {pic}, after the Supreme Court (TS) has agreed to open an investigation against him for the alleged crime of revealing secrets of the that the partner of the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, accuses him.
– In a statement from this association, collected by Europa Press, they consider that after the high court’s decision, García Ortiz “has lost the status of jurist of recognized prestige” required by the Organic Statute of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (EOMF). “In other words, it is absolutely incompatible to be a jurist of recognized prestige and, at the same time, to be accused by the Supreme Court as a possible author of a crime,” they explain.
-For the APIF, the attorney general “has completely lost the authority that the head of the Public Ministry should have” and therefore “it is not possible that he can continue even one more minute in this position, directing the institution throughout Spain, being able to give express orders to any prosecutor and in any matter”. ANDALUCÍA
Andalusia is the most impoverished region in the entire European Union, according to a study: {Translation, summary}
– The economic gap between the north and south of Spain is a palpable reality in the living conditions of its citizens. Specifically, Andalusia has the highest poverty rate in the country (30.5%), three times higher than that of the Basque Country (10.2%) and higher than that of any European Union country. Inequality between rich and poor is a factor that, beyond social class, income level or education, is determined by the region in which we live, according to a report by the European Anti-Poverty and Social Exclusion Network in Spain (EAPN-ES).
– In this sense, and according to data from 2023, the poverty rate in Andalusia (30.5%) is more than ten points above the state average (20.2%) and almost double the European average (16.5%). In fact, Andalusia is the most impoverished region in Spain, with poverty levels double those of the northern communities (15.4%) and, moreover, exceed those of any European country (Estonia is the poorest, 22.5%). Andalusia SAS claims it reduced surgical waiting lists by 5% in six months, specialist waiting lists decrease 3%: {Translation}
– The number of Andalusian patients awaiting surgery at National Health System centers has dropped 5% in the first half of the year. The 65,858 people who were waiting to enter the operating room on December 31 have become 62,571 on June 30. Thus there are 3,287 fewer people on the surgical waiting lists in the Andalusian Health System after six months, according to data published Wednesday by the Ministry of Health. The average waiting time has been reduced by ten days in the same section, from 128 days to 118 days on average after the first half of the year.
– Last February, the Andalusian Government launched the Health Guarantee Plan, implemented by the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, which in its first phase had earmarked 283.3 million euros to reduce the surgical waiting list to within the legally guaranteed limits. With the measures implemented, the Junta de Andalucía aimed to reduce the waiting lists of patients outside the legal time limits by 60% compared to the data recorded in December 2023.
– The plan for surgical procedures, announced at the time by the Regional Government of Andalusia, is based on two pillars: the activity of the public hospitals themselves, in which 163.3 million euros are invested; and contracts, with 119.9 million, bringing the total sum to 283.3 million. By the end of 2024, 341,907 patients are expected to be operated on in Andalusia: 229,308 through ordinary activity and overtime, and 91,248 through private contracted services. In this sense, a total of 116,261 patients are expected to be on the surgical waiting list by December 31, 2024, of which 21,351 will remain beyond the time limits.
– The number of Andalusian patients waiting for a consultation with a specialist at SAS healthcare centers has also dropped, in this case by 3%. There are 24,479 fewer Andalusians waiting for the call from the specialist doctor, from the 873,266 people who made up the waiting lists on December 31 to the 848,787 recorded by the SAS on June 30. The average waiting time endured by Andalusian patients has been reduced by an average of one week, from 143 days to 135 days in the first half of the current year.
*National Data*
– In relation to the national data, counted from one year to another, in the first half of the year, a total of 848,340 patients were waiting for a non-urgent surgical intervention, 3.4% more than in the same period of the previous year, and the number of days they had to wait also increased to 121, nine more than in June 2023, according to data collected by Efe.
– These are some of the data from the National Health System Waiting List Information System report for the first half of 2024, which has just been published by the Ministry of Health and which shows that the percentage of people waiting more than six months increased by three percentage points, reaching 20.5%.
– By specialties, the longest waiting lists are those of Plastic Surgery (236 days), Neurosurgery (189 days) and Angiology and Vascular Surgery (148); the shortest waits are for Cardiac Surgery (63 days), Dermatology (65 days) and Ophthalmology (84 days). Adelante calls for “expropriating” 640,000 empty Andalucian homes in the hands of investment funds and banks for “social rental”: {Translation, summary}
– The spokesman for Grupo Mixto-Adelante Andalucía in Parliament, José Ignacio García {pic}, has advocated Wednesday for the “expropriation” of the 640,000
empty homes that are currently in the community “in the hands of investment funds and banks” to be made available to the “social rent”. “That would be 640,000 more homes so that the residents of Andalusia could live in their cities and towns,” Garcia said at a press conference.
– He also said that the 105,000 tourist apartments that exist in the community “should not be regulated, but must be eliminated” and have to be apartments for permanent housing, and “tourists to stay in hotels”. He argued that these are “two easily applicable measures that would generate a public housing stock that can be given in social rent and that can serve many people”, while he considered as a fundamental measure “lowering rents by law”.
– “I do not think it is time to limit the price of rents because they have been rising for many years, but rather, we must reduce it by 50 percent,” he stressed. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/noticia…
MALAGA CITY
Antonio Banderas returns in a big way with ‘Gypsy’- Broadway style, with matinees and brunch included: {Translation}
– The Soho Theater in Malaga (Calle Cordoba, 13) once again imports the magic of Broadway by the hand of Antonio Banderas with his new musical Gypsy, the fourth show directed by the actor from Malaga, which premieres for the first time in Spain on Thursday, October 17. The play is based on the libretto by Arthur Laurents (originally called ‘Gypsy: A Musical Fable’), which saw the light in 1959. Today it comes to life in the voices and dances of a cast of 30 actors and actresses led by Marta Ribera and Lydia Fairén, along with the Larios Pop del Soho Orchestra, made up of 26 musicians.
– Those who especially enjoy musicals (or are curious to see what Banderas has created this time) can do so until December 1. The performances are held from Tuesday to Sunday, at 7:00 pm (with the exception of the premiere which starts at 8:00 pm). In addition, on weekends there will be a matinee performance, along with the evening performance, with a surprise included: the chance to try a brunch at the Tercer Acto restaurant, just a few steps from the theater door, or at the Italian restaurant Atrezzo, located just across the street (Calle Casas de Campos, 2). Both are part of the Hollywood actor’s hospitality business in the city.
– The price of the brunch, which can be purchased with the ticket depending on capacity, is 16 euros and includes orange juice, yogurt bowl with oatmeal and fruit, plus poached egg, crispy bacon, avocado and toast. This will be consumed in the hours prior to the show.
– The cost of the theater tickets ranges from 28 euros to 105 euros, depending on the area of the theater from where you want to see this play, which is accompanied by the description: “a musical, a fable, an experience”. Tickets can be purchased at the Soho Theater box office, located in the neighborhood of the same name, on its website [https://www.juntadeandalucia.es/cultura/agendaculturaldeandalucia/evento/gypsy] or at El Corte Inglés.
– In addition, for those who do not reside or are spending their vacations on the Costa del Sol, they have enabled a free bus service (round trip) that stops in Marbella, Velez-Malaga and Benalmadena. Of course, you have to check the dates on which it is available and reserve a seat in advance.
– The show, which breathes burlesque and vaudeville in every note, tells the story of Rose, the mother of the artist Gypsy Rose Lee, who seeks to turn her daughters into big stars at any price. Banderas has described the musical as the company’s “most ambitious” to date, highlighting the musical direction by Arturo Diez Boscovich, along with original tunes by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. After its Broadway premiere, Gypsy won nine Tony Awards and four Laurence Olivier Awards. Source, Spanish: https://www.elmundo.es/andalucia/2024/10/16/670eae65e4d4d8f3438b458d.html & Video Link
GASTRONOMIA / ENOLOGY
Andalusian Wine Tasting Results- ‘Montilla-Moriles’ repeats 100 Parker points with Amontillado de Pérez Barquero: {Translation}
– The Protected Designation of Origin Montilla-Moriles is celebrating after being awarded again with 100 Parker points in a tasting that has recognized the body and nuances of the oldest fortified wines and rewarded the new trend-setting ‘caldos’ such as sparkling and finos en rama.
– Specifically, the recent Andalusian Wine Tasting published this October by Robert Parker Wine Advocate has once again awarded 100 points, that is, the closest wine to perfection, to Pérez Barquero’s Amontillado 1905 Solera Fundacional Lote C 2024. The independent wine guide of the enologist Robert Parker- which is the most widely read and influential in the world- has also awarded great ratings to the other wines presented by Bodegas Pérez Barquero, a winery from Montilla that has managed to enter the select group of the 15 wineries in Spain -out of the more than 4,000 that exist- that have managed to repeat a 100 Parker points. Only 32 have ever received this rating.
– In fact, Bodegas Gracia Hermanos -which belongs to the Pérez Barquero business group- has achieved the second best score with the Amontillado Viejísimo Montearruit 75 años, Saca Única 2021 Bota Solera 1/1. This second achievement is joined by other great scores such as the 94 points of the Gran Barquero Fino en Rama, Saca de Primavera 2024; and the 92 of the sparkling G1 Brut Nature.
– The 100-point Amontillado. The Amontillado Solera Fundacional is a generous wine of which the taster Luis Gutiérrez, in charge of the aforementioned tasting, has assured that it is “exceptional and world class”. “What I find exceptional in this wine, being so extremely old and concentrated, is its ability to maintain elegance, poise and balance,” he said. Something in which Bodegas Pérez Barquero agrees, since, as explained to Libertad Digital by its Marketing Director, Adela Córdoba, it is a wine of extreme quality, “classic, reminiscent of Beethoven’s music, it is like drinking time”. “Any winemaker takes his hat off to a generous and old wine because it is a wine with many nuances and a great character and in that we are leaders in the PDO”, explained Córdoba before underlining the ‘great joy’ that the fact that it is an Amontillado, ‘which the word itself says that it comes from Montilla’, which makes the city of Cordoba ‘is known and puts us on the map around the world’, gives her winery.
– Although it is not the only recognition of the work of the Montilla winery, this wine with more than 100 years of history is one of its greatest assets and, although the price at which it will go on sale is not known, the winery has revealed to Libertad Digital that it will release a limited edition of 1,000 units.
– New trends. Likewise, according to Cordoba, although the winery is based on the oldest and most generous wines -which serve as a reference for the rest of the world- it is one of the companies of the Cordoba appellation that gives more importance to its R&D department, which has invested more than 2 million euros in six oenological projects, which have opened the doors to the Innovative SME seal granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
– These projects have resulted in wines such as the new G1 sparkling wine, which received 92 Parker points in the tasting. This, according to the Marketing Director, “is an exemplary case of collaboration between the University of Cordoba and the company, that is, of public-private collaboration, since, in addition to being a case of innovation with enological success, it is also a commercial success”. A new trend of sparkling wines from Montilla-Moriles that are on a par with any cava or champagne, whose retail price is around 20 euros.
– Finos en Rama and Pasto wine. Likewise, having recovered as an active value the Fino en Rama, “an unfortified Fino made from Pedro Ximénez grapes with an average age of 10 years” in the eyes of the taster Luis Gutiérrez and priced at around 15 euros; is a great achievement for the appellation, since its 94 points are being recognized by the public to the point of being one of the wines that is marking the commercial strategy for the coming years.
– In the same context is the new Fresquito Vino de Pasto, which has received a rating of 91 points framed in the category of less than two years of biological aging, that is, under the veil of flor. “It is like a mini Fino, but fresher and younger, lighter and easier to drink, but still powerful and with a tasty, yeasty and bitter finish,” Gutiérrez has indicated about it. This wine can be found for less than 15 euros in different specialized websites. In Córdoba’s opinion, Bodegas Pérez Barquero has been a “pioneer” in relaunching these grape wines, “which represent a traditional mention that has been recovered recently”. Next to it, there is the Fresquito Vino de Tinaja 2022, which has received 90 points. This is also a more traditional wine that has been recently recovered.

– The finalists also include other Quirónsalud centers such as Hospital Quirónsalud A Coruña, finalist in the category of best hospitals in intensive care units and also in the category of best hospitals in medical processes, where Hospital Universitario Rey Juan Carlos is also a finalist; or Hospital Quirónsalud del Vallès, which, together with Hospital Quirónsalud Sagrado Corazón de Sevilla, was also a finalist in the category of best hospitals in emergencies. Hospital Universitario Infanta Elena, Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor and Hospital Quirónsalud Sagrado Corazón were finalists in the category of best hospitals for surgical procedures. New Andalucian Health Minister, Rocío Hernández, ignores health unions, offers no plans to improve situation, so unions expand protests: {Translation}
– The unions CCOO, CSIF, Satse and UGT are back in the fray and are starting a calendar of protests in eight regional hospitals to draw attention to the “unacceptable situation of the Andalusian healthcare system, the failure to comply with agreements and the poor negotiating capacity of the administration”, which has led these four professional groups “to return to protest in front of the healthcare facilities in the eight provinces” of Andalusia. The protests will continue next Wednesday, October 23 – in the health centers – and October 30 – in the general hospitals of the Andalusian capitals.
– The mobilizations tomorrow, Wednesday, will be at the Poniente Hospital (Almeria), at 10:30; at the Hospital de La Linea (Cadiz), at 11:30; at the Infanta Margarita Hospital in Cabra (Cordoba), at 10:30; at the Hospital de Motril (Granada), at 10: 30; at Riotinto Hospital (Huelva), at 10:30; at Alto Guadalquivir Hospital in Andújar (Jaén), at 10:30; at Antequera Hospital (Málaga), at 10:30; and at Valme Hospital (Seville), at 10:30.
– “The current situation offers no alternative after the request made in mid-September by CSIF, Satse, CCOO, and UGT to meet with the new Minister of
Health, Rocio Hernandez {pic}, has not even received a response,” lament the central unions, a reality that coupled with ”a context of lack of negotiation, layoffs of temporary staff and non-compliance with the agreements reached more than a year ago for Primary Care and the professional career”, leads the aforementioned unions to demonstrate again this October to denounce the ‘precarious and unacceptable’ situation of the healthcare system, as reported by Europa Press in a note.
– The professional groups have recalled that they have already called protests during the month of May in the eight Andalusian provinces, as well as another joint one in Seville on June 16. According to the unions, the “inaction” of the administration led to the call for a partial strike in the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) on June 26. Now, once the summer has passed, CCOO, CSIF, Satse and UGT regret that “the situation has not evolved positively”, so they will again “raise their voices in defense” of Andalusian public health during this month of October, “without ruling out new measures if the attitude of the administration does not change radically”.
– The unions have pointed out in conclusion that they have the “hand outstretched to a dialogue unfortunately lost” in recent months and which “is leading the Andalusian public healthcare system to a pressing situation that requires urgent measures, many of which were already agreed upon some time ago with an administration that is failing to comply with them, causing serious harm to the Andalusian population”. October’s supermoon pairs with a comet for a special nighttime spectacle:
– October’s supermoon is the closest of the year and it’s teaming up with a comet for a rare stargazing two-for-one. The third of four supermoons this year, it will be 222,055 miles (357,364 kilometers) away Wednesday night, making it seem even bigger and brighter than in August and September. It will reach its full lunar phase Thursday.
– In a twist of cosmic fate, a comet is in the neighborhood. Discovered last year, comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas {pic} is now prominent in the Northern Hemisphere after wowing stargazers in the Southern Hemisphere. The moonlight will wash out some of the comet’s tail, but it’s still worth a look after sunset, said NASA’s Bill Cooke. “Most astronomers hate the full moon because its bright light messes up observing other objects. So it’s a bit hard for us to wax poetic about it even if it’s the biggest supermoon of 2024,” he said in an email.
– Better catch the comet; it may never return. But don’t fret if you miss Thursday’s supermoon. The fourth and final supermoon of the year will rise on Nov. 15. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/supermoon-comet-tsuchinshan-atlas-536afbf27f025349019991ff4f9a240c
