Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

SPAIN
All tourist and short-term rental properties in Spain will need to be registered on new database to allow listing on digital platforms:
– The Spanish government is trying to calm those who are protesting over the national housing crisis by giving the green light to two measures that were already being worked on, one of which has even caused friction with Sumar, its coalition partner.
– The Minister for Housing and the Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez, informed government ministers at their cabinet meeting on Tuesday about the ruling to
regulate tourist and seasonal (short-term) housing. This regulation, which is a substitute for a European directive on the same issue, will come into force on 2 January next year (with a test phase yet to be defined) and will require homeowners wanting to rent their property for short periods of time to list them on a single register. Once registered they will obtain a code. Until they have the code they cannot market that property on any digital platform (like Airbnb or Booking, but also those of other real estate portals and agencies).

Processes & possible penalties for seasonal rental property owners who do not comply with the new decree: {Translation}
– The state registry of temporary and tourist rentals to combat fraud is very close to becoming a reality since this Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved to send to public hearing the Royal Decree creating the Digital One Stop Shop for Rentals.
– With this new tool, it is ensured that those homes that are marketed on digital platforms must appear in the registry. In this way, it will be verified that the property complies with all the legal requirements to operate as a vacation or seasonal rental and an identification number will be provided, which is essential to be able to advertise it on online platforms.
– How will the One-Stop-Shop work? The Digital One-Stop-Shop will act as a platform where the data of the city councils, autonomous communities, communities of owners, owners and the Land Registry will be interconnected. The objective is to have all the information of the same housing in a common and accessible space, to be able to be consulted within all the countries of the European Union.
– Thus, in the case of temporary rentals, an identification code will be issued for a period of one year and, when renewing it, the lessor of the dwelling must attach all the documentation that justifies the reason for the temporary rental.
– With the aim of not slowing down the licenses, tourist accommodations will be given a provisional code and within 15 days it will be said whether it is firm or not.
Once the number is obtained, the owner of the tourist accommodation will be able to go to a digital platform and market the accommodation. If not, the owner will be given a period of seven days to correct the possible errors.
– Likewise, the digital platforms will have to check in the Digital One-Stop Shop if this number is correct and corresponds to the apartment they are trying to advertise. Tourist accommodations will be obliged to have this number if they want to advertise on the platforms.
– What sanctions will there be if they do not comply? At the moment, it is unknown if there will be sanctions or how they will be applied, however, what seems clear is that in case of non-compliance with the rule, it will be the autonomous communities and municipalities who will assume the sanctioning regime based on their competences. In addition, non-compliance may be prosecuted through the law on consumers and users. Sánchez, who’s own wife is being investigated for multiple counts of fraud, defends his attorney general’s alleged crimes by demanding Madrid Mayor Ayuso’s resignation for her boyfriend’s tax fraud (perhaps he should take his own advice?):
{Translation}
– Pedro Sánchez appeared this Thursday at the end of the meeting of the European summit being held in Brussels and responded to domestic issues, one of them linked to the controversy over the Attorney General of the State. The President of the Executive not only supported Álvaro García Ortiz, but also strongly attacked Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the PP.
– At the gates of the imputation of the State Attorney General by the Supreme Court, Sánchez assured that “the Government has expressed itself from the first moment
in a clear and categorical way: we respect the position of the Supreme Court, but we support the action of the State Attorney General because he has done his job, what he had to do. Two things: to prosecute the offender and, secondly, to combat disinformation and a hoax. Probably, the news allows us to remember the origin of all this, that the chief of staff of the president of Madrid, partner of a confessed criminal, gives rise to a hoax. In political terms, we have to ask ourselves as a society when the PP is going to ask for explanations and demand responsibilities to the president of Madrid, who is the partner of a confessed criminal, who has defrauded the Treasury and has enriched himself with the masks during the pandemic”.
– Sanchez demanded Ayuso’s resignation. “No one within the PP has assumed any political responsibility and no one has demanded it,” he said.
– Hours earlier, Ayuso charged against García Ortiz, “imputed for obeying the obsessions of the President of the Government” with her and, in her opinion, without “any point of honor or any kind of prestige”. The Madrid leader criticized that “all the powers of the State” have acted “against a private citizen (her boyfriend), whose right to defense has already been violated by the Attorney General, and who has already been politically condemned and abused in the media with a mockery for a year”. “You are mafiosi and Stalinists working against the adversary”, she insisted. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga, on the brink of the abyss: 34.3% of its population lives in poverty or social exclusion: {Translation}
– The Andalusian Network for the Fight Against Poverty and Social Exclusion (EAPN) has presented the XIV report on the state of poverty in Andalusia, revealing that 34.3% of the population of Malaga, some 601,000 people, are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. This alarming figure is placed in the context of the AROPE indicator, which measures poverty, social exclusion and low labor intensity. At the regional level, 37.5% of Andalusians live in a situation of vulnerability, well above the national average.
– The deterioration of the main economic indicators in Malaga, such as access to housing, is one of the factors that has contributed to this increase in poverty. The average purchase price of housing has risen by 14.6% in 2023, with a cost of 3,189 €/m² in the capital. Malaga families have to spend 43% of their income to buy a home, while rent has increased by 31.3%, reaching 13.89 €/m². These prices make access to adequate housing difficult for a large part of the population.
– The report also highlights the feminization of poverty in Malaga, a phenomenon that is aggravated by the wage gap and gender violence. In 2023, 9,043 complaints
of gender violence were registered, positioning Malaga as the province with the most cases in Andalusia. In addition, women are more prone to precarious employment and poverty, with almost half of them suffering job insecurity, especially those who are single and have dependent children.
– Another critical aspect of the report is the educational situation in Malaga. The early school dropout rate is 15.9%, exceeding both the Andalusian and national average. This reality reflects the lack of resources and opportunities faced by many vulnerable families, especially those in extreme poverty.
– Despite improvements in employment in 2023, the report stresses that having a job does not guarantee escape from poverty. The average salary in Malaga is 22,720 euros per year, below the national average, while the median salary is even lower at 20,600 euros. This fact places many families in a situation of economic vulnerability, unable to cope with rising prices.
– In addition to employment and housing, severe material and social deprivation has increased in Andalusia, affecting 12.6% of the population. This situation highlights the inability of many families to access basic resources that allow them to maintain a decent quality of life. The EAPN report insists on the need to strengthen social policies, with a focus on redistribution and protection of the most vulnerable. Poverty in Malaga is a structural problem that requires a coordinated intervention between the central and regional governments to implement long-term sustainable policies. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/malaga/1785431/malaga-al-borde-del-abismo-el-343-de-su-poblacion-vive-en-pobreza-o-exclusion-social/
TORROX
Torrox City Council publishes a questionnaire for residents to contribute their vision about the future of the municipality: {Translation}
– The City Council of Torrox has published a questionnaire, framed in the Urban Agenda, for neighbors to contribute all the ideas that favor the development of the municipality. The aim of this initiative, according to the mayor, Óscar Medina, is “to face this challenge together with the citizens to continue shaping a welcoming, equitable, fair and healthy municipality through collective awareness and common effort”. Medina has expressed that “we want to go hand in hand with the citizenship in the extraordinary growth that in all areas, not only in the economic, is experiencing the municipality of Torrox”.
– As stated in the public questionnaire, “the City Council of Torrox is committed to
the implementation of the Urban Agenda as a guiding thread to meet the future challenges of the city and fulfill the mission and objectives of sustainable development”. Thus, to implement this agenda effectively, “it is necessary to have the participation of the residents of Torrox,” said the mayor of Torrox.
– The form will make it possible to have “the different visions proposed, necessary to achieve the sustainable development of the entire municipality through transformative and participatory measures as an essential contribution to imagine and define how the Torrox of the future will be”.
– A total of 65 measures to develop. Thus, issues related to the economy, tourism, agriculture, the business sector, connections, digital modernization, green areas, public spaces, culture or health, among others, are collected. A total of 65 measures have been collected to develop the ten proposed visions so that the participants, individually or as representatives of associations, groups, companies or administrations, can leave their opinion in a simple way.
– The form is available at this web address: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScBwHIBTdxjVkly9fo3Ce7LzXzJJrInZ_jQTxVu51RBHBLLaA/viewform. The same link can be found both on the website of the City Council of Torrox and on the official profiles of social networks of the consistory itself. SEVILLA
Seville begins to limit tourist apartments, which are now completely banned in the center and Triana: {Translation, summary}
– Seville may finally begin to limit the tourist apartments. After nearly eight months of negotiations and permanent blockades of the opposition, the Government of José Luis Sanz has taken forward on Thursday, with the support of Vox and the rejection of the rest of the groups, the measure, which will prevent granting more housing licenses for tourist use (VUT) in those neighborhoods that exceed 10% of total residential housing, a percentage that is already well above in most of the neighborhoods of downtown and Triana.
– Thus, the approved proposal will prevent granting more licenses in the neighborhoods of Santa Cruz, Arenal, Alfalfa, San Bartolomé, Feria, Encarnación-Regina, Santa Catalina, San Lorenzo, San Gil and San Vicente, in the Old Town, which accounts for 70% of the VUT, and in some areas of Triana. And it will allow them to be increased in the rest of the city, until reaching the threshold which, specifically, in San Julián, El Museo and San Bernardo, is between 5% and 10%. Meanwhile, in the rest of Seville the rate of tourist apartments is less than 5% of residential dwellings, as in Nervión, Macarena, Bellavista and Los Remedios, among others. MIGRATION IN SPAIN
A boat with 174 immigrants arrives in El Hierro- it is the fifth vessel to arrive in the Canary Islands this Thursday: {Translation}
– Salvamento Marítimo has transferred to the dock of La Restinga, in El Hierro {pic}, a cayuco rescued in waters near the island with 174 people on board. This is the fifth boat of the day that arrives in the Canary Islands, bringing the total number of immigrants disembarked this Thursday to 294. None of these people needed to be transferred to the Hospital Insular Virgen de los Reyes for medical attention.
– The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, who is visiting the island due to the situation that El Hierro is going through because of the migratory phenomenon, has witnessed the arrival of the boat.
– According to the information gathered from the health and emergency services, these are 174 people of sub-Saharan origin in apparent good health. Most of them are adult men and there were also four women and nine minors, coming from Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. According to what the migrants told the assistance teams, they made a seven-day crossing from the island of Niodior, in Senegal.
– Throughout the day, four other boats arrived in the Canary Islands, two of them in Lanzarote, one in Gran Canaria and one in Tenerife. The Salvamento Maritimo’s Salvamar Alnair carried 58 people in a dinghy in Puerto Naos, Lanzarote, at dawn, and another 57 were transferred to Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife. A dinghy with three people arrived in Gran Canaria by its own means and another one was towed to Puerto Naos, in Lanzarote with two. Sánchez flatly rejects deportation centers, claims “They do not address any of the problems and create new ones”, wants to “open Europe” to migrants: {Translation, summary}
– “I say it clearly: we are not in favor of these types of formulas because they are formulas that do not address any of the problems and create new ones,” Sánchez stressed at a press conference at the end of the European Council in which migration has been one of the main topics of debate after Von der Leyen’s letter raising this proposal, in line with the policy advocated by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
– Sánchez has maintained that “orderly, responsible, well-managed migration is the answer to the demographic challenge” that both Spain and the EU face, as well as the way to guarantee economic growth and the welfare state. defending the need to approach the migration phenomenon “positively.” In this sense, he has claimed that we must “face the migration phenomenon thinking about future generations and not about the next elections” and has stressed that Europe is in the “dilemma” of choosing how it wants to be in the future. “We want a prosperous and therefore open Europe or we want a poor and therefore closed Europe,” he summarized.
– Having said this, and asked if Spain is becoming increasingly alone in its position regarding migration in light of Von der Leyen’s proposal and the meeting with a dozen leaders organized before the summit by Meloni on this issue , Sánchez has argued that although he rejects migrant deportation centers in third countries, there are other points in the letter from the president of the Commission that he does share.
– Thus, he considered that the Twenty-seven are “walking within a framework of migration policy where we can find common elements” and he recalled that just as Spain had to “give in” in the Migration and Asylum Pact, “because there are many things that we don’t like them”, now what we “have to do” is put it into practice. EUROPE
What is in Zelensky’s Ukraine victory plan? Nothing new:
– Here are the five main points of a Ukrainian plan for victory against Russian invading forces no later than next year as outlined by President Volodymyr Zelensky {pic} on Wednesday. Another three points were secret, he said, as he unveiled the plan in a speech at Ukraine’s parliament:
*Ukraine needs an unconditional invitation to join the NATO military alliance now, he said.
*Ukraine’s ability to defend itself had to be “irreversibly strengthened” and he laid out a number of ways to do this. They included further arming Ukraine and strengthening its defence industry, boosting air defence capabilities, removing restrictions on weapon use and a continuation of Ukrainian military operations on Russian soil.
*Zelensky said Ukraine’s western allies should deter Russia from any further
aggression by showing Moscow that this would have consequences. “Ukraine proposes to place on its soil a comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrence package that will be sufficient to protect Ukraine from any military threat from Russia,” he said.
*Zelensky proposed that Ukraine sign an agreement with the U.S., EU and other unnamed allies that would allow for joint investments and use of Ukraine’s natural resources, which Zelensky said were worth trillions of dollars. “These include, in particular, uranium, titanium, lithium, graphite and other strategically valuable resources that will strengthen either Russia and its allies or Ukraine and the democratic world in global competition,” he said.
*Zelensky proposed that after the war, Ukraine’s armed forces could be used to enhance the security of NATO, and replace some of the U.S. forces currently stationed in Europe. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/key-points-zelenskiys-ukraine-victory-plan-2024-10-16/
HEALTH
Málaga’s health waiting lists reach the Prosecutor’s Office- Marea Blanca denounces that the average time that patients wait to have a “simple diagnosis” ranges between 10 and 16 months:
{Translation}
– Waiting times in the public healthcare system have reached the courts. Or so the leaders of Marea Blanca (White Tide), the citizens’ group that is mobilizing to achieve improvements in the management of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), intend to do so. In this way, they are going a step further and are taking a complaint to the Malaga Public Prosecutor’s Office for the first time in view of the consequences that they believe the delays in care are having on the health of patients. “There are people dying while they are still on the waiting list for surgery. Lives are endangered,” warns Ángeles González, one of the coordinators of the platform.
– Their idea is to make visible the worsening of patients’ health due to the delay in being attended to. In the document they have presented, Marea Blanca lists the examples of patients who have died without having undergone surgery or been able to see a specialist. The quality of the system, they say, “is having a serious impact” on citizens, which, in their opinion, should already have “criminal consequences”. According to the data they handle, the average time to obtain a “simple diagnosis”, which could be cancer or another serious disease, they say, ranges between 10 and 16 months. They hope that a judge will investigate whether this “constitutes a crime”. “We have never filed a complaint of this type with the Public Prosecutor’s Office before, because we have always tried to ask for political responsibility. They are our managers, the money belongs to the citizens,” say the coordinators of the group, who understand that ‘the situation is getting worse’ as the years go by and that the problem ‘is getting worse’, regardless of the politicians responsible. “Health care is not color-coded; we all get sick here. It has been deteriorating for a long time now,” they stress.
– The Regional Hospital, the one with the longest delays in operations. This newspaper published last July that almost all the public hospitals in the province are reducing the delay for an operation, although almost all of them are also increasing the number of patients on the surgical waiting list. The Regional is the one that takes the longest on average for an operation and the Costa del Sol, in Marbella, the one that records the longest delay for an appointment with a specialist. In short, that is the picture of the latest report of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) on waiting lists at the end of last June.
– According to these data, the Regional is the one that has the longest delay to go through the operating room of the entire provincial public system. Exactly 208 days
on average. But it has reduced the waiting time compared to December 2023, when the delay was 239 days. In other words, it has cut it by 31 days compared to then. With this number, it is the second hospital that has reduced its surgical waiting list by the most number of days, after the Antequera regional hospital, which has cut it by 38 days, going from 151 to 113 in that period.
– MRIs open until 02:00 to reduce the waiting list. The unions have been denouncing that the hospitals have had their tongues hanging out for months. In order to reduce the lists, operating rooms have been operating at unusual hours and there have been appointments for consultations in unknown shifts, as well as MRIs scheduled until approximately 02:00 in the morning in the case of Malaga. The increase in concerts with private healthcare centers has caused a stir. The justification for all the above was the shock plan. Almost 300 million euros have been provided by the Ministry of Health to implement the guarantee plan, the last shock plan of the Board approved in February of this year, which was aimed at reducing the waiting lists for health care. The result is so far discreet.
– The number of Andalusian patients waiting for surgery in healthcare centers has been reduced by half a percentage point in the first half of the year. The 205,005 people who were waiting to enter the operating room on December 31 have become 203,979 on June 30. Thus, there are 1,026 fewer people (0.5%) on the total surgical waiting lists in the Andalusian Health System (SAS) after six months, according to data published yesterday by the Ministry of Health. The average waiting time has been reduced by just five days, from 174 days to an average of 169 in the first half of the year. And 38% of Andalusian patients have to wait more than six months to enter the operating room. This percentage is the second worst figure among the autonomous communities, behind only Cantabria. In the annual comparison, from June 2023 to June 2024, the general surgical waiting lists have grown by 6%.

The ad-blocker crackdown begins- Google Chrome disables popular ad blocker “uBlock Origin”:
– It appears that Google Chrome really wants you to look at advertisements. In a quote post on X posted by Raymond Hill, the developer who brought us the free ad blocker Chrome extension uBlock Origin, it appears that Google Chrome is turning off the ad blocker. “The deprecation of uBO in the Chrome Web Store has started,” Hill posted.
– This comes in response to another user, Christoph Nakazawa posting a screenshot that shows Google Chrome turning off three extensions – MDN Search, Neat URL, and uBlock Origin – with the note “These extensions are no longer supported. Chrome recommends that you remove them.”
– If you’d like to avoid this entirely, consider switching to more ad-blocker friendly browsers, like Brave {or Firefox, Epic Privacy Browser (with free unlimited VPN), Ghostery Browser or Floorp, I use them all. Remember, it’s harder for them to track and target you if you use different browsers for different tasks. Use one for video streaming, another for shopping, another for web-surfing, and Ghostery, with its high level of security, for emails and messengers.-Ed.}.
