Upcoming Holidays:
– National holiday, Friday, 1 Nov, is All Saints Day.
Businesses and banks will be closed. Most shops, bars, cafés and restaurants will, however, be open for business as usual.
In Spain, every 1st of November is All Saints’ Day, to remember Christian saints who do not have their own Saint day. However, due to All Souls Day being on the very next day, the meaning of All Saints’ Day has expanded as a day to remember all those who have departed. In fact, more flowers are sold in Spain on All Saints’ Day than on any other day of the year.

DigameXtra Will Be Closed Friday, 1 Nov,
For The National Holiday.

Posts scheduled for the Friday Weekend Edition, 1 Nov, will be posted one day early on Thursday, 31 Oct.

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Rent Protests Expand Across The Country- Tenants’ union starts gathering supporters for rent strike- They declare housing should be free for residents- Welcome to progressive Spain!: {Translation, summary}
– The proliferation of demonstrations against the current situation of the real estate market throughout Spain continues to give wings to a Tenants Union determined to call a rent strike. This is evidenced by its social networks, where the organization led by the controversial Valeria Racu has already begun to disseminate a form for all those interested in supporting the protest. “We will not pay their prices and for that you have to be organized. JOIN THE RENTAL STRIKE”, reads the message that they spread over and over again on their X account.
– The aim is to gauge the support they would have for the strike they are calling for. Be that as it may, the tone continues to be as belligerent, if not more so, than in the days leading up to the demonstration held in Madrid on October 13.
– “We prepare conflicts of colossal dimensions,” they threaten in their networks, where they now turn to support the camp installed this weekend in front of the Valencia City Hall. “If we have no home, we will occupy the square!” they declare.
– Although in this type of meetings it is common to see posters advocating the “expropriation of empty homes in the hands of banks and vulture funds”, this union goes further: “We are committed to expropriate tourist apartments and empty homes – they say in one of their messages, extending the challenge regardless of their ownership. Housing should be free and universal”. Despite not providing any studies or economic report, the promoters of this union dare to ensure that “the conditions exist so that everyone, without exception, can enjoy access to housing, free of charge and with quality living conditions”.
– In their opinion, “the problem is not only the abusive price of housing, but the fact of having to pay for it”, so they demand both the “abolition of rents and mortgages” and the “cancellation of any real estate debt”. In this way, it would be the banks, but also the small owners who support 92% of the rental market in our country, who would have to assume millionaire losses.
– In addition, they advocate prohibiting “any type of eviction, be they large vulture funds or banks, be they entrepreneurs or small rentiers”, a measure that would be derived from the previous ones and that would end, therefore, with the right to private property. ANDALUCÍA

High-risk wildfire period officially ends in Andalucía with 6,062 hectares burnt, 34% below average for the decade: {Translation, summary}
– The high-risk fire period has officially ended in the Andalucía region of southern Spain with just 6,062 hectares of land scorched. The total – which includes 683-hectares-worth of trees and 5,379 hectares of burnt scrubland – is 34% below the average for the decade (9,217 hectares). MALAGA PROVINCE

The rains do not alleviate the Malaga reservoirs- they are still in a critical situation at 15% of capacity: {Translation, summary}
– The reservoirs extend their critical situation: they are at 15.7% of their capacity and all together gather 95.98 hm3 with a gain after the passage of the two storms. They are 25% less than just a year ago and are already at the same level they were in February, just before the rains of March and April came into action.
– The worst numbers are signed by the reservoirs of the Guadalhorce system, those responsible for supplying the capital. Thus, the Guadalhorce reservoir {pic}, with 10 hm3 and 7.96%, marks every day its historical minimum; something more accumulates the Conde, 13.77 hm3, which corresponds to 20.71%; while the Guadalteba contains 18 hm3, so it marks 11.74%. However, the city’s consumption does not depend exclusively on these reserves; it is also necessary to add to the equation the wells of Fahala and Aljaima, in the Lower Guadalhorce, where work continues to increase their extractable flow.
– El Limonero deserves special mention, whose numbers remain practically unchanged given its strategic nature, i.e., its reserves are not drawn from; however, they are quite modest, holding 3.39 hm3 and at 15.17%. The same consideration is given to the Casasola reservoir, with 4.34 hm3 and 19.98% of its capacity.
– Things continue to be just as bad for La Viñuela, which, however, has gone through worse times; the last one came to an end this January, when it rebounded after beating for the last time its historical minimum (12.2 hm3). At the moment it accumulates ten more, 22.24, and is at 13.53%. To prevent water from not being able to be extracted from it due to lack of technical means and reserves (i.e., that it becomes a dead reservoir), as long as the drought continues to squeeze to that extreme, the infrastructure has a floating pump that can be used to extract water until almost the end of stocks. The one in the best situation, on the other hand, is La Concepción; in fact, it is the only one that has gained a few tenths; an amount that, as it is not difficult to imagine, is far from what is required at the moment. It currently holds 24.23 hm3 and is at 42.11% of its capacity. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/lluvias-pantanos-malaga-situacion-critica_0_2002606646.html

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Rincón de la Victoria approves a new waste rate, which will increase by €60 in homes and €127 in businesses: {Translation, summary}
– News in Axarquia on the new waste tax imposed by the European Union. After Velez-Malaga announced its next insertion -still without official date- in the plenary last September, this Monday, Rincon de la Victoria has confirmed that next Wednesday, October 23, it will approve the implementation of its new rate. According to the Consistory, after its approval an average annual increase of 60 euros in homes and 127 in businesses is expected. To alleviate the consequences, the City Council plans “a reduction of the IBI rate to compensate”.
– The City Council of Rincon de la Victoria has decided to apply in the coming years a reduction in the rate of IBI to compensate for this new rate. “This law is derived from an European directive, which proposes to calculate waste consumption per household and recycling levels, but the European directive does not establish the application regime so each member state of the European Union decides how it is articulated. And in the case of Spain, the central government has decided to regulate this directive by imposing a waste collection fee that each municipality must pass on to all its neighbors,” explained the councilman of Finance, Antonio Fernandez.
– In this sense, the mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, asked Madrid to come forward to alleviate this increase in the waste rate and announced to compensate the municipal receipts. “This is not something that affects only the City Council of Rincon de la Victoria and its neighbors, but to all municipalities in Spain. We understand that the central government could have passed it on as a state tax and not as a tax imposed by the councils. Now, we are already studying the formulas so that the increase can affect the neighbors in the least possible way. In the coming years we will be lowering the IBI rate”. ALHAURÍN DE LA TORRE

Alhaurín de la Torre will fumigate the entire municipal area to prevent the Nile Virus: {Translation, summary}
– The City Council of Alhaurin de la Torre will carry out fumigation throughout the municipality to prevent the Nile Virus. The Consistory already launched last September a series of preventive measures against this disease, after the Andalusian Government detected the virus in mosquitoes caught in the Guadalhorce River and the risk level was raised in this town to 4 -where it is still. As part of the action plan, the Consistory has completed the work of fumigation in the area around the neighborhood of Zapata, part of the term that is in a perimeter of 1.5 kilometers in the area where the virus was located, but now the Junta de Andalucía has informed the City Council that it must act throughout the municipality. LA HERRADURA

They destroy a projectile from the Civil War found on a farm in La Herradura: {Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil has destroyed in a controlled manner a projectile from the Spanish Civil War that the owner of a farmhouse in La Herradura, in the municipality of Almuñécar, located while making a road on his farm.
– This man had hired an excavating machine to remove the land in order to make a road, and during the work the shovel of the machine hit something metallic. Upon discovering it, at first they thought it was a large piece of very rusty iron, but one of the neighbors who saw it told them that it was possibly a Civil War shell and immediately alerted the Guardia Civil.
– The agents of the Explosives Disposal Team of the Civil Guard of the Command of Granada went to the place of the finding and verified that it was a 152 mm armor-piercing projectile of the Civil War with the fuse intact and full charge, so its manipulation can be very dangerous for inexperienced hands despite the time elapsed.
The specialists in deactivation of explosives followed the established protocol and moved the projectile to a quarry in the province where they detonated it in a controlled manner and without danger to people.
– The Guardia Civil advises that, as in this case, if someone finds an old projectile, they should refrain from handling it, mark the place and quickly call the Guardia Civil emergency telephone number 062, since the explosive charge or the fuse of the device may be active despite the time elapsed and, although it is unlikely, it may explode and seriously injure the person who is handling it and all the people nearby. Sexually transmitted infections run amok in Spain- gonorrhea and syphilis are on the rise: {Translation, summary}
– Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to run rampant, especially in young men: last year, 36,983 cases of chlamydia were diagnosed, 20.7% more than two years earlier, 34,401 cases of gonorrhea, up 42.6%, and 10,879 cases of syphilis, 24.1% more. SCIENCE

Microbes, not fossil fuels, drove methane growth between 2020 and 2022:
– Microbes in the environment, not fossil fuels, have been driving the recent surge in methane emissions globally, according to a new, detailed analysis published Oct 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by CU Boulder researchers and collaborators.
– Using computer simulations, they found that between 2020 and 2022, the drastic increase in atmospheric methane was driven almost entirely by microbial sources. Since 2007, scientists have observed microbes playing a significant role in methane emissions, but their contribution has surged to over 90% starting in 2020.
– “Some prior studies have suggested that human activities, especially fossil fuels, were the primary source of methane growth in recent years,” said Xin (Lindsay) Lan, a scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder and NOAA. She leads the reporting on NOAA’s global greenhouse gas trends at the GML. “These studies failed to look at the isotope profile of methane, which could lead to a different conclusion and an incomplete picture of global methane emissions.”
– It remains unclear whether the increased microbial emissions came from natural sources like wetlands or human-driven sources, such as landfills and agriculture. The team plans to delve deeper to identify the exact source of methane. Full article: https://www.colorado.edu/today/2024/10/21/microbes-not-fossil-fuels-drove-methane-growth-between-2020-and-2022
