Upcoming Holidays:
– National holiday, Friday, 1 Nov, is All Saints Day.
Businesses and banks will be closed. Most shops, bars, cafés and restaurants will, however, be open for business as usual.
In Spain, every 1st of November is All Saints’ Day, to remember Christian saints who do not have their own Saint day. However, due to All Souls Day being on the very next day, the meaning of All Saints’ Day has expanded as a day to remember all those who have departed. In fact, more flowers are sold in Spain on All Saints’ Day than on any other day of the year.
DigameXtra Will Be Closed Friday, 1 Nov,
For The National Holiday.
Posts scheduled for the Friday Weekend Edition, 1 Nov, will be posted one day early on Thursday, 31 Oct. Submissions for the Thursday, 31 October issue must be received by 6pm Wednesday, 30 October. Late arrivals will be posted the following Monday.

Pedro Caught In Another Lie To Investigators? Sánchez claimed that he has not had any relationship with jailed conman Aldama- “I have never sat down or met with this man, I have not exchanged a word”, photograph suggests otherwise :
– The Koldo case has become a corruption scheme that is close to the Government. A matter that involves the former minister José Luis Ábalos, who was also number two of the PSOE, and, among other people, the businessman Víctor de Aldama, whom the UCO report places as a “corrupting nexus”. It was precisely with Aldama that Pedro Sánchez took a photograph in February 2019, as published by EL MUNDO, at a party event on the occasion of the presentation of the candidacy of Pepu Hernández for the mayor of Madrid. The President of the Government defends that he has not had any relationship with nor knows this businessman, who is currently in prison.
– “I have not crossed words with this gentleman”, said the head of the Executive in an informal conversation with journalists who are accompanying him on his official visit to India. “I have never sat or met with this gentleman, neither formally nor informally”.
– Sanchez frames this snapshot as one more of the crowd that can be made when he attends an event, especially a party event. What is true is that the photo with Aldama does not take place in the middle of a crowd rushing to greet the politician, but in a restricted area of the theater of La Latina without public access, and that it is not a quick selfie, but a pose, and the snapshot is taken by Koldo García, Ábalos’ right-hand man and one of the main people involved in the plot.
– Look at the photo and judge for yourself if Sanchez’s statement is accurate, “I have never sat down or met with this man, I have not exchanged a word”. Source, Spanish: https://www.elmundo.es/espana/2024/10/27/671e70f7fc6c838f318b45a6.html

Feijóo demands that Sánchez “call the press” to announce his resignation after his photo with the convicted commission agent Aldama: {Translation}
– Alberto Núñez Feijóo has attended the meeting with presidents of New Generations of the Popular Party, from where he has spoken about the photo of Pedro Sánchez next to Víctor de Aldama at a party hosted by the PSOE in 2019 that was published this Saturday by the newspaper El Mundo. “The silence was so eloquent that we began to understand why he did not want to answer,” has assured the popular leader, who has asked the president of the Government to call a press conference to explain ‘his relationship with Aldama’ to then, present his resignation. “Any country deserves a free president, not one blackmailed by someone who is in prison,” Feijóo has maintained.
– “Since yesterday we already know some things: Mr. One (the code name proven to be used for Sanchez in Aldama case court documents) was not just passing by, and Mr. Aldama had VIP access to the president of the Government,” he has assured,
referring to the image, which according to the publication of El Mundo was taken in a restricted area for the rest of the activists who attended that event. He also asked to know why “the photographer is Mr. Koldo and why we have to live in this constant disregard for truth and morality”. Feijóo added that Spain needs a “clean president, without suspicion of hiding the truth” and that there are silences that “are unacceptable and immoral”.
– Feijóo has denounced before the hundreds of young people who accompanied him at the event that the Government has carried out behaviors “that cannot go unpunished”, but affirms that there will be no consequences. He gives as an example the other topic of the week: the ‘Errejón scandal’. “Sánchez is not going to dismiss the vice-president for covering up for her spokesperson because the president covered up for Ábalos,” he points out. It is for that reason that for the popular leader, the Executive is divided into two parts, “those who are suspected of having committed crimes and those who are suspected of covering them up”, an “unbearable” situation of a Government that “gives lessons of everything and is not an example of anything”.
– “They give lessons of economy but most families have lost purchasing power, they give lessons of equality and it is enough for me to see your smile…” continued Feijóo, who believes that there can be no ‘lessons of freedom’ by a government team that advocates to ‘censor the media’.
– Feijóo told the young people that they must “face a new regime, that of resignation” and asked them not to join “the progressive deterioration of many things in Spain, to make things work worse”. He encouraged them, pointing out that “it has never been easy to be young”, but that now they have “a level of demand and competitiveness” never seen before. He points out that there is a perfect storm: “Precariousness, impossible prices and an inoperative government”. More than half of Spaniards hold Sánchez responsible for PSOE corruption cases: {Translation, summary}
– In the most difficult moment of the Government in relation to corruption scandals, more than half of Spaniards consider that the President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, is responsible for the cases that involve the PSOE or his wife. Exactly 52 percent understand that this must be so in relation to the different judicial matters affecting the Government. This GAD3 survey for ABC has been carried out after a barrage of bad news for the Executive in the judicial field: the report of the Central Operative Unit (UCO) has placed the former Minister of Public Works and former number 3 of the PSOE, José Luis Ábalos, in the center of the allegedly corrupt plot and, as a consequence, the judge has requested his imputation to the Supreme Court.
– That same report refers to Pedro Sánchez as “the 1” because that is what the members of the plot called him, and it has been proven that the president of the Government lied in parliament in relation to the visit to Spain of the vice-president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez. In addition, the commissioner, Víctor de Aldama, has been imprisoned as a consequence of another scandal, this one linked to a VAT fraud on hydrocarbons.
– As if that were not enough, the High Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) has unanimously rejected -and with an even harsher private vote- the complaint that Sánchez filed through the State Attorney’s Office against the judge who is investigating his wife Begoña Gómez for alleged cases of corruption. The same happened with a similar complaint filed, this time in a private capacity, by the president’s own wife against the instructor of the case for alleged prevarication and disclosure of secrets. All this after the Provincial Court of Madrid endorsed the investigations of Judge Juan Carlos Peinado in relation to Sanchez’s wife. MALAGA PROVINCE
‘Dana’ on way to south of Spain- how will it affect the weather in Malaga and on the Costa del Sol this week?:
– Rainfall is practically guaranteed this week in Malaga and on the Costa del Sol. The position of an isolated high level depression (‘Dana’) in the area of the southern mainland favours the arrival of the much-needed rain in most of the province, according to the forecast of Aemet.
– The main episode will begin on Monday, 28 October, a day on which a transport
drivers’ strike is planned for city, interurban and occasional buses (school routes, for example). Therefore, if you have to take the car, the best thing to do is to leave in good time and be patient. Although it is still difficult to know which days and areas will be more likely, but what is clear is that at least until Thursday the Dana may generate precipitation throughout the province, which may occasionally be heavy. Eight arrested in Malaga for food fraud involving variety of foods in poor condition: {Translation}
– The Civil Guard has arrested 32 people and is investigating 21 others in Spain as part of an international macro-operation against food fraud, which especially affected products such as extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and wines with protected designation of origin (PDO).
– In the case of Malaga, the operation known as OPSON XIII leaves eight detainees and the dismantling of a criminal organization with 1,800 kilograms of food products such as sausages, ham, salmon, pizzas and refrigerated and frozen eggs poorly preserved, unlabeled or expired. The detainees removed the expiration labels or erased them in order to distribute them later to their customers.
– Sevilla. Inspections carried out in establishments dedicated to the processing and distribution of frozen fish products in Sevilla caught the workers of a company relabeling pallets of frozen cod loins, 45,320 kilograms, whose expiration date had expired. In addition, a criminal group dedicated to the distribution of EVOO adulterated with other types of oil (sunflower, seed, lampante oil) was dismantled, for which 11 people were arrested and 20,000 liters of fake oil were seized.

ALHAURÍN DE LA TORRE
A wild boar causes two traffic accidents in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– A wild boar has caused two traffic accidents on Sunday on the road to Coín, near the municipality of Alhaurín de la Torre, crossing the road.
– According to sources from the Fire Department of Malaga, two units of the Local Police of Churriana were sent to the scene. Upon arrival, in addition to three cars involved in an accident, the troops found a woman suffering “a nervous breakdown” after having hit a “large wild boar” with her car, running over the animal, causing damage to her vehicle and also to a fruit and vegetable stand installed on the side of the road.
– The second accident, a rear-end collision, was caused by the so-called “lookout effect”. Finally, the three people involved in the two accidents were attended to on the spot and the municipal services were in charge of removing the body of the animal.
– Last week the way to control these animals in the capital made headlines several times, when the City Council of Malaga committed to pause the management through bow hunting, for which it hired a company for 15,000 euros months ago. From now on, narcotic darts with anesthetic effect will be shot at the specimens, which will subsequently be euthanized by a veterinarian, as announced by the Councillor for Environmental Sustainability, Penélope Gómez, during the commission of this area held last Monday. MMA- UFC 308- Spain’s Ilia Topuria, UFC featherweight champion, retains title in Abu Dhabi by knocking out top ranked contender Max Holloway: {Translation}
– Ilia Topuria {pic, red stripe gloves} retains the featherweight title after a spectacular KO over Max Holloway {pic, blue stripe gloves}. The fight aimed to be one of the best of the year and did not disappoint. The Spanish-Georgian promised to knock out the American and he has delivered. The fight began with Ilia Topuria fulfilling his threat: to challenge Max Holloway in the center of the octagon to an exchange of punches. However, the Hawaiian-born fighter refused the proposal.
– And that’s where the fight began. Both fighters completed a very serious first round, with a Max Holloway slightly above in the connected punches, so most likely the judges’ scorecards went for Max.
– In the second round, Ilia continued with the fight plan: keep connecting “leg kicks” and try to finish shortening the distance. And he succeeded. The second round was for Topuria, who was more successful in the exchanges. But the best was yet to come.
– The third round started with the same dynamic. Both fighters wanting to continue the fight standing. Bad idea for Max. Topuria again showed why he is the best fighter in the division (and probably the best “pound for pound” fighter in the UFC) and managed to knock Max Holloway out after a minute and a half of the third round. Up to $41 billion in World Bank climate finance unaccounted for, Oxfam finds:
– Up to $41 billion in World Bank climate finance —nearly 40 percent of all climate funds disbursed by the Bank over the past seven years— is unaccounted for due to poor record-keeping practices, reveals a new Oxfam report published today ahead of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington D.C.
– An Oxfam audit of the World Bank’s 2017-2023 climate finance portfolio found that between $24 billion and $41 billion in climate finance went unaccounted for between the time projects were approved and when they closed.
– There is no clear public record showing where this money went or how it was used, which makes any assessment of its impacts impossible. It also remains unclear whether these funds were even spent on climate-related initiatives intended to help low- and middle-income countries protect people from the impacts of the climate crisis and invest in clean energy.
– “The Bank is quick to brag about its climate finance billions —but these numbers are based on what it plans to spend, not on what it actually spends once a project gets rolling,” said Kate Donald, Head of Oxfam International’s Washington D.C. Office. “This is like asking your doctor to assess your diet only by looking at your grocery list, without ever checking what actually ends up in your fridge.”
– The Bank is the largest multilateral provider of climate finance, accounting for 52 percent of the total flow from all multilateral development banks combined.
– Oxfam’s investigation revealed that obtaining even basic information on how the World Bank is using climate finance was painstaking and difficult. “We had to sift through layers of complex and incomplete reports, and even then, the data was full of gaps and inconsistencies. The fact that this information is so hard to access and understand is alarming —it shouldn’t take a team of professional researchers to figure out how billions of dollars meant for climate action are being spent. This should be transparent and accessible to everyone, most importantly communities who are meant to benefit from climate finance,” said Donald. Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead Co-Founder and Bassist, Dead at 84:
– Phil Lesh, the classically trained musician who co-founded the Grateful Dead and whose unconventional bass playing steered the band into some of its most experimental directions, died Friday at the age of 84.
– The Grateful Dead’s surviving members – Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann – wrote in a statement following Lesh’s death, “Today we lost a brother… Phil Lesh was irreplaceable. In one note from the Phil Zone, you could hear and feel the world being born. His bass flowed like a river would flow. It went where the muse took it. He was an explorer of inner and outer space who just happened to play bass. He was a circumnavigator of formerly unknown musical worlds. And more.” Full article: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/phil-lesh-grateful-dead-dead-1234809976/
