Upcoming Holidays:
– National holiday, Friday, 1 Nov, is All Saints Day.
Businesses and banks will be closed. Most shops, bars, cafés and restaurants will, however, be open for business as usual.
In Spain, every 1st of November is All Saints’ Day, to remember Christian saints who do not have their own Saint day. However, due to All Souls Day being on the very next day, the meaning of All Saints’ Day has expanded as a day to remember all those who have departed. In fact, more flowers are sold in Spain on All Saints’ Day than on any other day of the year.

DigameXtra Will Be Closed Friday, 1 Nov,
For The National Holiday.

Posts scheduled for the Friday Weekend Edition, 1 Nov, will be posted one day early on Thursday, 31 Oct. Submissions for the Thursday, 31 October issue must be received by 6pm Wednesday, 30 October. Late arrivals will be posted the following Monday.

SPAIN

Butane workers strike- these are the days that you will not receive the butane cylinder: {Translation, summary}
– Butane delivery workers are going on strike. This has been decided by the Spanish Federation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Distributors (FEDGLP) in an attempt to pressure the Government anddemand the updating of the regulations that regulate their activity. What they denounce are the current conditions that force them to work at a loss, endangering both their livelihood and the continuity of the home delivery service, explaining, “increasing operating costs that make continuing the service unsustainable.”
– According to the organization, the remuneration for the logistics and marketing of the classic butane cylinder is 0.53 €/kg, which is 5 times less than that of a postal delivery person and far from what they consider should be the minimum remuneration necessary to cover the costs of home delivery: 4.8 euros per cylinder.
– When will the strike take place? These stoppages will be carried out one day a week, for the time being until Christmas, but indefinitely “until the sector’s demands are met”.
– The temporary stoppages are scheduled for November 5, 13, 21 and 29, as well as December 5, 11, 17 and 23. Thus, during these days, the delivery of gas cylinders to homes will be suspended.
– How many people will be affected by the strike? According to FEDGLP data, they currently supply six million households on a regular basis. Therefore, the suspension of the service will affect both individuals and companies, but the supply to gas points of sale will be maintained, in addition to those users in a situation of social vulnerability, educational, health or social care centers, as well as homes for the elderly and non-profit institutions. ANDALUCÍA

Weather instability runs through Andalucia, leaving intense showers until the weekend: {Translation}
– The meteorological instability present these last days in Andalusia will continue in force until Friday, crossing the region from east to west and leaving in its wake heavy showers. This is explained by the territorial delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the community, Juan de Dios del Pino, who said that the effects of a Dana will mutate from Tuesday in a cold air squall, which will ease as we reach the weekend.
– He has indicated that from Tuesday these showers will also be more persistent. He also recalled the activation of yellow and orange warning for this reason in different areas of Andalucia, with the possibility of reaching 30 liters accumulated per square meter in an hour. Already on Tuesday and especially on Wednesday, this adverse situation moves to the central interior of Andalusia, especially Cadiz, Cordoba, Malaga and Seville.
– The squall will move on Thursday to Portugal, so it will affect western Andalusia to a greater extent. The adverse situation persists on Friday, although, for the moment, it seems that it will subside with the arrival of the weekend.
– Temperatures, according to del Pino, may rise continuously from midweek, reaching the highest values on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, the delegate of the Aemet has specified that Tuesday the wind will blow strongly in the Alboran Sea, affecting the western and eastern regions of Almeria. MALAGA PROVINCE

The PP of Malaga opposes the housing expropriations proposed by the left: {Translation}
– The general coordinator of the PP of Malaga, Cristobal Ortega {pic}, stressed Saturday that they will not allow “expropriations that the populist left proposes to address the problem of access to housing” and criticized that “the only solution of left-wing populism is to expropriate, attacking the rights and freedom of the people of Malaga”.
– In a statement, Ortega stressed that the PP will continue “working and building VPO so that Malaga continues to lead the investment in public housing per capita in Spain”, compared to “the 37 years of socialist neglect in the Board and the inaction and neglect of the Government of Pedro Sánchez during the last six years.” “The PP will not allow the radical left to attack the Constitution and that, instead of assuming their responsibilities after six years in the Government of Spain, try to implement the communist model of Venezuela or Cuba,” he warned, noting that ”thousands of Malaga have been able to buy a home with their work and effort and it is intolerable that they are concerned with threats of expropriations that we will not tolerate.”
– The ‘popular’ leader has censured these solutions of the left and has considered that “they discourage renting and investment, generating legal uncertainty and distrust among owners; in short, that aggravate and worsen the problem of access to housing, as we have seen with the State Law of Sanchez and Sumar, which results in a lower supply and higher prices for rent and purchase.”
– “It is far-fetched to propose communist solutions in 2024 that failed miserably last century. If those are the ideas of the left, they better look in the trunk of the attic”, has asserted Ortega, who has contrasted this position ‘with the more than 5,300 homes built and delivered by the municipal initiative of Francisco de la Torre, who currently has another 3,000 homes in promotion in the capital’.
– He has also highlighted the 67 million euros invested by the Andalusian Government since 2019 in the province in housing and the aid and tax rebates promoted in this period, a framework in which he has claimed the Executive “effective measures” to facilitate access to housing.
– Finally, the general coordinator of the Malaga PP has asked the PSOE if it shares these proposals of its government partner. “The people of Malaga have the right to know what position the socialists have to these ideas,” he said, regretting that ”we are so used to their lies and that they throw themselves into the arms of radical populism that we assume that they would be able to implement them.” Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/malaga/1795459/el-pp-de-malaga-se-opone-a-las-expropiaciones-de-vivienda-propuestas-por-la-izquierda/

Six traditions and festivals that are still going strong in Malaga province, despite Halloween:
– Long before this imported tradition of Halloween took such a strong foothold in Spain, mostly thanks to television and cinema, there were other pagan or religious customs for these dates. Many of them have been lost as they have been overlapped or eclipsed by Halloween, although there are some that have survived, especially in villages, thanks to the determination of the local population. In some cases they keep to the customs as before, while in others they have adapted to influences of new customs brought in from outside. These are the main ones that will be celebrated mostly on the night of 31 October or during the first days of November (some even earlier).
– The thanksgiving votive procession in Coín {pic}
– The Night of the Souls (La Noche de Ánimas) in El Borge
– Feast of La Ureña at Fuente de Piedra
– Performance of Don Juan Tenorio in Antequera
– The Noche de los Espantos (night of the ghosts) in Vélez-Málaga
– Vigil in San Sebastián cemetery in Casabermeja
– In addition to these traditions, on the evening of 31st October many villages and towns across Malaga will celebrate their own “tostones”, the roasting of chestnuts. This will be the case in villages such as Jimera de Líbar, Alpandeire and Igualeja, among others. There will also be municipalities where a tostón will take place later on.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Cannabis Grow Operations Busted in Vélez-Málaga: {Translation}
– The National Police has dismantled three new indoor marijuana crops and a point of sale of cocaine in several houses in the town of Velez-Malaga in Malaga. In a new blow to the cultivation of marijuana, after the plantation with more than 1,000 specimens last week in Arriate, in the Serrania de Ronda. The agents have seized this time 501 cannabis sativa plants in different stages of growth.
– In this operation six people between 21 and 63 years of age have been arrested, most of them belonging to the same family, for their alleged participation in the crimes of drug trafficking, fraud of electric fluid and belonging to a criminal organization.
– The investigation, carried out by agents attached to the Small Traffic Group of the Judicial Police Brigade of the Police Station of Velez-Malaga, was initiated from information that pointed to the cultivation of marijuana in homes in the neighborhood of La Villa in Velez-Malaga. Thus, with the purpose of confirming the suspicions, agents who went to the area verified the incessant noise emitted by the logistics of the laboratories and the intense smell characteristic of marijuana crops.
– The investigators, continuing with the investigations, identified the ringleader of the plot, a man who took advantage of the vulnerable situation of people around him, most of them members of his own family, convincing them to join the illicit business. In this way, people close to the leader of the network would have accepted the deal to refurbish part of their homes to be used for cannabis cultivation. Likewise, the police, together with electricity supply operators from a company in the sector, observed the fraudulent use of electricity, which posed an added danger to the residents’ communities due to the illegal connections to the electricity network.
– Finally, the agents dismantled three marijuana crops and a cocaine retail outlet, having made several seizures of drugs among customers who came to the area to purchase doses of narcotic substances. After the house searches, the National Police seized 501 cannabis sativa plants and 4,240 Euros in cash, among other effects. GIBRALTAR

Gibraltar dumps wipes, compresses and other waste into Algeciras waters: {Translation, summary}
– Gibraltar continues to engage in practices that are very harmful to the environment. One of the most striking, without a doubt, is that has never treated its sewage or wastewater, which it discharges directly into the sea in waters that the United Kingdom and the Rock maintain are British but whose sovereignty Spain claims by virtue of the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713.
– These days some images released by Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción show these dumps and fishing gear stuck with wipes, pads and other waste coming from Gibraltar into the waters around it. Conservationists, one of the few belligerent voices with Gibraltar’s policy on environmental matters, also denounce that these discharges end up in waters classified as Special Conservation Area of the Eastern Strait protected by the European Union (EU).

SCAMS

The Police warn about the scam with the red telecare button in Spain: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s National Police has issued an alert through its social networks, warning the population, especially the elderly, about a worrying activity detected around the famous red telecare button. The scammers pose as 112 telecare service workers and offer the emergency device in exchange for quick assistance in case of need, such as a fall or a blow.
– Once the scam has been set up, the criminals take advantage of the trust and vulnerability of the elderly, one of the groups most exposed to this type of practice. The scammers present themselves as representatives of a supposed telecare service and, with a professional tone, try to persuade the victims that they need an emergency button at home, which is activated with a monthly subscription. To formalize the alleged contract, they request personal and bank details of the person.
– The National Police have stressed that this type of real telecare services, such as the one managed by 112, are public, free or subsidized, and never request banking information over the phone. In addition, they have reiterated that 112 is an assistance number that receives calls, but does not issue them to offer home services.
