Upcoming Holidays:
– National holiday, Friday, 1 Nov, is All Saints Day.
Businesses and banks will be closed. Most shops, bars, cafés and restaurants will, however, be open for business as usual.
In Spain, every 1st of November is All Saints’ Day, to remember Christian saints who do not have their own Saint day. However, due to All Souls Day being on the very next day, the meaning of All Saints’ Day has expanded as a day to remember all those who have departed. In fact, more flowers are sold in Spain on All Saints’ Day than on any other day of the year.

DigameXtra Will Be Closed Friday, 1 Nov,
For The National Holiday.

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.
We are DigameXtra sponsors, so our contact info can be found everyday in the Sponsor’s Section.

SPAIN

Most destructive ‘Dana’ of the century leaves at least 72 dead in Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha regions of Spain, Andalucia towns flooded, evacuations in Malaga:
– At least 72 people have died in Spain as a result of heavy rain and flash floods that swept through the country on Tuesday, the Guardia Civil has confirmed.
– The worst affected areas are the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia – where state rail infrastructure company Adif temporarily suspended all train journeys in the early evening in Albacete, Malaga, Granada and Almeria provinces, as well as Murcia.
– Downpours in the early hours of Tuesday caused significant damage in Andalucía, cutting off numerous roads and suspending classes at several schools. In Alora in Malaga province, an AVE train travelling from Malaga city to Madrid derailed, with no injuries reported.
– One of the towns in Malaga province most affected by the storm was Álora, where large areas became flooded, with rain gauges registering some 150mm. Several people had to be evacuated by helicopter in the El Puente de Isla Hermosa neighbourhood after the Guadalhorce river overflowed its banks, reaching a height of 4.2 metres. In Marbella, a lightning strike caused a fire in a two-storey house.
– In the Axarquía area, an average of 100mm were recorded during the night- examples are 112.2 liters in Antequera, Nerja with 55.6 liters
– More than 1,000 military personnel have been deployed to search for those who have not made contact since heavy rain fell in the country on Tuesday, amid fears the death toll could rise.
– Third worst natural disaster. The result of flash flooding as a result of the Dana is the third natural disaster in terms of number of deaths after the Biescas flood (Huesca) in 1996 with 87 deaths and the Turia flood in 1957, in which between 80 and 100 people lost their lives. The natural disaster that claimed the most lives in Spain was the flood at the Biescas campsite, in the province of Huesca. It happened on 7 August 1996, when a sudden rise in the Arás torrent swept away the Las Nieves campsite, causing the death of 87 people and injuring more than 187. The Valencia flood in 1957 inundated the city, causing at least 81 deaths, thousands of victims, and considerable material damage. In fact, this event marked the future and development of Valencia, leading to the change of course of the Turia river in 1973 in order to prevent a catastrophe of the same magnitude from happening again.

MALAGA PROVINCE

The rains let the reservoirs of Malaga gain almost 30 hectometers in 48 hours, La Viñuela in Axarquía gains just 2 hectometers: {Translation}
– The same storm that sowed chaos in the province of Malaga, especially in the Guadalhorce Valley, has put in less than 48 hours almost 30 hectometers of water in the reservoirs of Malaga. It seems unbelievable, but it is not. This Monday they had just over 95 hectometers and after the passage of the DANA in the province, accumulate 125.67 hectometers, according to data from the Hidrosur network, updated at 16:00 hours this Wednesday, October 30.
– A few days of rain does not solve the drought in the province, but undoubtedly the increase in the reserves of the reservoirs is the most positive side of this DANA. Not all reservoirs have gained water equally, because the rainfall has not discharged with the same intensity throughout the province, but it is expected that the runoff, once the soil, which is very dry, is soaked, can help in the coming days to those that are still immobile.
– The most benefited have been the Casasola dam, the Guadalteba, Conde del Guadalhorce and Guadalhorce reservoirs. The most striking is the first of these, in the city of Malaga, which has practically doubled its reserves (from 4.8 to 11.24), reaching 51.75% of its capacity.
– The Guadalteba reservoir, near the municipality of Teba, has risen about seven hectometers (from 17 to more than 24), three percentage points more; and the Conde del Guadalhorce, in Ardales, has risen six hectometers (from 13.7 to 20.74), and is already at 31.19% of its capacity.
– Precisely in the environment of these reservoirs have been collected some of the highest amounts of rain during the day. In the case of the Guadalteba, in 12 hours have fallen 135 liters per square meter, and in the Conde del Guadalhorce have been about 130. Both well above the red level marked by the Aemet.
– As for the Guadalhorce reservoir, which is also the worst situation presented by the drought, has received more than five cubic hectometers. Yesterday it had just 10 and this Wednesday is at 16.52 to 13.14% of its capacity.
– On the side of the least graced by these rains is the dam of La Concepción, in Marbella, which has barely moved: it was at 24.04 hectometers and has gone to 24.76; and also the Limonero, in the capital, which has gone from 3.2 to 3.85. In the case of La Viñuela, in the Axarquia, has gained just over two hectometers (from 22 to 24.24), and exceeds 14% of its capacity. Southport attack- Looks like the rioters and those jailed for Fakebook posts may have had a point! Murder suspect Axel Rudakubana charged with terrorist offence after deadly ricin poison and al Qaeda manual found in his home:
– The teenager accused of stabbing three girls to death in Southport faces a separate terror charge after police said a biological toxin and an al Qaeda training manual were found in a search of his home. Axel Rudakubana, 18, from Lancashire, Axel Rudakubana, the 18-year-old son of Rwandan immigrants, had already been charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder following the mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in July.
– At a briefing today, Chief Constable Serena Kennedy from Merseyside Police said the teenager now faces two further charges related to evidence obtained by police following searches of his home after the attacks. She said he now faces one charge of the “production of a biological toxin, namely ricin, contrary to Section 1 of the Biological Weapons Act 1974”. SCIENCE

‘Obelisks’- Entirely New Class of Life Has Been Found in The Human Digestive System:
– Peering into the jungle of microbes that live within us, researchers have stumbled across what seem to be an entire new class of virus-like objects.
– These mysterious bits of genetic material have no detectable sequences or even structural similarities known to any other biological agents. So Stanford University biologist Ivan Zheludev and colleagues argue their strange discovery may not be viruses at all, but instead an entirely new group of entities that may help bridge the ancient gap between the simplest genetic molecules and more complex viruses. “Obelisks comprise a class of diverse RNAs that have colonized, and gone unnoticed in, human, and global microbiomes,” the researchers write in a preprint paper.
– Named after the highly-symmetrical, rod-like structures formed by its twisted lengths of RNA, the Obelisks’ genetic sequences are only around 1,000 characters (nucleotides) in size. In fact, this brevity is likely one of the reasons we’ve failed to notice them previously.
