SPAIN

The Royals are all class while Sánchez runs away- The moment in which Sánchez is evacuated from Paiporta amid insults and thrown objects: {Translation}
– The visit of the King and Queen, Carlos Mazón and Pedro Sánchez to Paiporta, an area devastated by the DANA, has turned into a massive protest of the neighbors. The indignation and desperation of the residents of Paiporta has exploded this Sunday in the form of mud and cries of “Murderers!” as the Kings’ delegation walked by, which also included the head of the Executive Pedro Sánchez and the president of the Generalitat Carlos Mazón. In images as unprecedented as the magnitude of the disaster, hundreds of citizens have confronted the authorities, throwing mud, objects and shouted a chorus of proclamations against the authorities in the face of what they consider their abandonment by the institutions.
– The visibly shaken president Sánchez was helped into one of the motorcade’s cars when the neighbors violently rebuked him, protestors beat on the vehicle with shovels and broomsticks as it pulled away. Meanwhile, the King and Queen (spattered in mud thrown by angry flood victims) bravely remained and tried to calm the outraged citizens {pics}.
– Sánchez, accompanied by his bodyguards, has been evacuated from the area visibly shocked, as can be seen in a video {Video Link} by Adrián Edo Galindo, whose publication has been authorized by À Punt Radio Televisión Valenciana. The president gets into one of the vehicles of the retinue, a KGM Rexton of the Ssangyong brand that received several blows from the citizens present when he was leaving the place. To cries of “Sánchez resign”, “assassins” and the throwing of all kinds of objects, he left the area while Don Felipe and Doña Letizia mediated with the neighbors and offered them their love and understanding.
– Many of the residents of the area, affected by the floods, feel abandoned by the authorities and dissatisfied with the management of the crisis in what is the most serious catastrophe in the history of the Valencian Community.
– For the moment, neither Sánchez nor anyone from Moncloa has made a statement regarding the riots or the decision to leave Paiporta or the week long delay in responding to the crisis; the visit to Chiva, scheduled for the afternoon, has been postponed. People in Malaga and along the Costa show their support for Valencia flood victims:
– Fire stations, businesses and other collection points are receiving huge quantities of donated goods to distribute to those affected by the ‘Dana’ disaster.
– There are collection points set up in Marbella, Rincón de la Victoria, Torremolinos and at the Comedor Social Yo Soy Tú in Malaga city, among other places. Companies such as Construcciones Fearral, Reciclado Roster and Fundación Ly Company have organised to collect materials donated by staff, and by late Friday morning they already had 15,000 litres of water, 7,000 litres of milk and four pallets of utensils and basic necessities. Alejandra Cátering will also be a collection point until Monday morning at Finca Almodóvar in Alhaurín de la Torre. Products can be donated in the 57 supermarkets that Maskom has throughout the province, in a plan that has the support of Malaga city council. Paiporta rebels! They shout “murderers” and throw mud at the Kings, Sánchez and Mazón: {Translation}
– Shouts of ‘out’, as well as mud throwing, have received the retinue of the King and Queen of Spain, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, on their arrival at the center of Paiporta.
– Dozens of outraged volunteers and residents of Paiporta have received the procession with insults, with shouts of “out, out”, and have confronted them, causing Sánchez to flee, while both the king and the queen remained to mediate with young people who have approached them.
– With his face stained with mud, like his coat, the king has continued to advance through one of the main streets of this town at ground zero of the dana and has tried to reassure several of the volunteers, very upset after five days of disaster by the flood.
– The queen has also talked with some of the outraged, while the shouts of ‘fuera, fuera’ and some insults directed to all the authorities continued.
– Although at first security began to open umbrellas to prevent mud from falling on the royals, they were later closed while the king continued walking and stopping to talk with volunteers and upset neighbors.

Queen Letizia continued with the muddy visit despite the serious altercation that sent Sánchez running for cover : {Translation}
– This morning, the royals experienced one of the hardest moments of their reign when they arrived at what was considered ‘Ground Zero’ of the DAN in Valencia and were greeted with shouts and insults and with throwing objects and mud during their tour through the streets of the Paiporta.
– Don Felipe, Doña Letizia and the delegation of authorities that accompanied them were enveloped in a rain of mud and objects that the citizens threw to reflect the indignation and discontent with the management that has taken place after the DANA.
– The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, immediately abandoned his visit through the streets, but the kings did not, they continued despite the unrest that was being experienced. King Felipe VI walked as best he could and spoke with some citizens showing his concern. Meanwhile, Queen Letizia did the same, but in a different direction than the monarch, also with a group of escorts. Muddy and unable to hold back tears, she was visibly affected by the situation and spoke with some residents who were nearby. Wet, with her face and body covered in mud, Queen Letizia followed the same behavior as the King and got involved with the people, thus showing his support in these difficult times. Spain mounts biggest peacetime disaster recovery operation as death toll reaches 214:
– The deadliest flash floods in Spain’s modern history have killed at least 214 people and dozens were still unaccounted for, four days after torrential rains swept the eastern region of Valencia, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Saturday.
– In a televised statement, Sanchez said the government was sending 5,000 more army troops to help with the searches and clean-up in addition to 2,500 soldiers already deployed.
– The tragedy is already Europe’s worst flood-related disaster since 1967 when at least 500 people died in Portugal. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/thousands-join-effort-clean-up-catastrophic-spanish-floods-2024-11-02/

Without mercy- The end of the VAT bonus raises the price of basic foods: {Translation}
– The recent end of the VAT rebate on basic products has left a significant mark on shopping basket prices in Spain, especially in a context in which inflation was already putting pressure on households. Since the beginning of October, essential products such as flour, milk, eggs, rice and sunflower oil have started to become more expensive, directly affecting consumers’ pockets. Asufin and FACUA-Consumers in Action have analyzed this phenomenon and point to a generalized price increase that not only affects staple foods, but also a wide variety of products in major supermarket chains.
– According to Asufin, the recovery of VAT caused an increase of 3.83% in the price of the basic basket in October, reversing the fall of 3.27% that had been experienced in September, before the tax rebate ended. The increase, although recent, already represents a blow to families, especially with the approach of the Christmas season, a period that historically generates a high demand for food products. The organization also points out that this increase does not affect all supermarkets equally: while Mercadona has increased its prices by an average of 10.53% since January 2023, Carrefour has increased its prices by 13.36%, DIA by 13.89%, El Corte Inglés by 25.38%, and Alcampo, which has the most significant increase, has increased its products by 36.23%.
– For its part, FACUA-Consumers in Action has identified a significant increase in the price of specific foods since the VAT went from 0% to 2% on basic foods, and from 5% to 7.5% on products such as seed oils and pasta. White seedless grapes, for example, have seen an average rise of 26% in the last month, recording their highest increase at Aldi, where they went from €1.29 in September to €1.79 in October, an increase of 38.7%. As for potatoes, the average increase in price was 13.3%, although Hipercor showed the biggest rise, from 5.99 euros to 7.80 euros for a five-kilo bag, an increase of 30.2%. In the case of pardina lentils, these have risen by 7.1%, with Eroski having increased their price the most, reaching an additional 28.5%.
– Other foods in high demand have also experienced notable increases. According to FACUA, iceberg lettuce, garlic, sliced mushrooms and round rice have also seen their prices rise in the last month. Although some products have recorded moderate falls, such as golden apples (-0.8%) and carrots (-0.5%), the general trend of increase is clear and affects most products that make up the daily diet of Spaniards. FACUA also points out that since the entry into force of the new VAT in October, the year-on-year increase in the price of some products is alarming. The white seedless grape leads this increase with 25.9%, displacing olive oil, whose price has also increased by 12.6% over the last year. Potatoes, on the other hand, have risen in price by 20.7% over the same period.
– The elimination of the VAT rebate, as FACUA points out, has not only had an impact on the current price, but has also prompted consumers to question the possible increase in the profit margins of the distribution chains, which in some cases have been notable. FACUA recalls that the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, together with the autonomous consumer protection authorities, have sanctioning powers in the face of possible price abuse practices. In February of this year, following complaints from FACUA, the Ministry asked the main chains for proof that the price increases applied since January 2023 did not imply an increase in their profit margins, a prohibited practice for products affected by the VAT reduction. However, eight months later, Consumo has not yet communicated an official response on these efforts. AXARQUÍA

Three small earthquakes in just three days in municipalities of Axarquía: {Translation}
– Although all the attention is focused on Valencia due to the disastrous consequences of the historic flood caused by the Dana, nature continues its course and earthquakes are also recorded, fortunately of low magnitude. The last three in the province of Malaga have occurred in a very short period of time, just three days, specifically between last Thursday, October 31 and this Saturday, November 2.
– The three earthquakes have been recorded in Cútar, Iznate and Benamargosa. In none of the cases there have been personal or material damages, since the neighbors have hardly felt the tremors.
– The first one was registered, according to the IGN, at 21.41 hours last Thursday, on Halloween night, in Cútar. The epicenter was located at a depth of 61 kilometers from this small town in the Axarquia region, with a population of barely 600 inhabitants. It had an intensity of three degrees on the Richter scale. The second earthquake occurred just a minute later in the nearby town of Iznate, with a magnitude of 2.2 degrees and the epicenter was located at a depth of 50 kilometers.
– Finally, according to information published by the National Geographic Institute on its website, the third earthquake in the Axarquia occurred on Saturday night, at 21.31 hours, with epicenter in Benamargosa, with about 1,600 inhabitants, 68 kilometers deep, and with an intensity of 2.6 degrees on the Richter scale. La Axarquía temporarily receives water from Malaga again due to the turbidity of the La Viñuela reservoir: {Translation, summary}
– The abundant rains of recent days in Malaga, caused by the Dana located in the vicinity of the Gulf of Cadiz, have been a boost for the battered reserves of the seven reservoirs in the province, which have gained more than 30 cubic hectometers in the last seven days. This is the positive side of a storm that has left serious flooding in the Guadalhorce Valley and has been inflicted on the Valencian Community, with the largest floods in a century.
– In the Axarquia, there have been no serious incidents. However, the entry of water to its main water resource, the dam of La Viñuela, is causing problems in the treatment of water in the water treatment plant located in the hamlet of El Trapiche, in Velez-Malaga, due to high turbidity. Thus, since last Wednesday the operation of the facilities is paralyzed, and the 14 municipalities that are partially supplied have returned to receiving resources from the water treatment plant of El Atabal, in Malaga capital, as happened until last May.
– Jorge Martin stressed that the 14 municipalities that are supplied by La Viñuela (Almáchar, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, El Borge, Comares, Cútar, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Totalán, Algarrobo and Torrox), “are not noticing any problem in the supply from Axaragua, as we continue to provide the maximum allocation that was agreed in the last drought committee, 180 liters per inhabitant per day.” “We are getting about 300 liters per second from Malaga and about 100 from the river Chíllar de Nerja,” specified the president of Axaragua, who insisted that the situation ”does not have to have effects on the population of these localities that already depend on each municipality, restrictions and night cuts to comply with the maximum consumption of 180 liters,” he added.
– Martin has not been able to specify when they can resume the treatment of drinking water from the Vinuela dam in the plant of El Trapiche. “We hope it will be in the next few days, once the turbidity in La Viñuela is reduced,” he said. In any case, the president of the Eastern Commonwealth has argued that such interruptions “usually occur when there are episodes of heavy rains,” and are due to the fact that the water in the viñolera dam “moves a lot by the rapid entry of resources from the transfer tunnels from the rivers surrounding the basin.” The president of Axaragua has been confident that the situation will be resolved “very soon”, but has insisted that with the resources sent by Emasa and the river Chíllar de Nerja it can solve the situation “without pressure problems for localities.” “Hopefully it will continue to rain this fall and the consumption limitations of 180 liters per inhabitant per day can be changed,” added Martin.

MALAGA PROVINCE

Safe haven for motorhome travellers & dwellers- the village of Malaga that welcomes five times more motorhomes than inhabitants: {Translation, summary}
– Benarrabá is a municipality of Malaga located in the west of the province in the Genal Valley, is one of the towns that make up the region of the Serrania de Ronda. A village with a predominantly mountainous territory, bathed by the rivers Guadiaro and Genal that has just over 550 inhabitants, but, where, what really dominates throughout the year are the motorhomers.
– Benarrabá receives every year more than 3,000 motorhomers who come attracted by the village, its surroundings and the possibility of parking and connecting vehicles, as well as staying overnight in the motorhome area of the municipality, located in the area known as Jarque, at the entrance of the village.
– According to sources of the Town Council, “every day motorhomes arrive” to this area, although, the season of greatest activity “goes from the beginning of autumn until the end of spring”. “During the weekends there are usually more national tourists and on weekdays more international ones, mainly French and Dutch.”
– It is, of course, an influx of people that “is an economic benefit for Benarrabá and is noticed in the establishments of the town”, emphasize from the Benarrabá consistory that recalls that the motorhome area was created 15 years ago, in 2009, and since then, “enjoys a magnificent acceptance by visitors, who in many cases share information of interest regarding the best places to travel in this type of vehicles”. – The local police officers of Nerja and Torrox, along with medical personnel, and thanks, first, to the rapid intervention of a nurse who was circulating in the area, off duty, have managed to stabilize and transfer to the Regional Hospital of Malaga to a cyclist of Norwegian origin, 76 years old, who suffered an acute myocardial infarction, at noon on Sunday, when practicing sport in the area of Calaceite, in Torrox-Costa.
– The alarms went off around 12.10 hours, when several witnesses alerted the 112 emergency service that there was a man lying on the shoulder of the old N-340, which could have suffered a fainting spell. A nurse who was driving by the area was the first to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. Subsequently, two agents of the Local Police of Torrox, Alejandro Ortiz and officer Wilfredo Alvarez, joined in.
– The police patrol of Nerja has been responsible for ordering traffic in the area, next to the beach of Calaceite, on the old N-340. Emergency medical personnel were also sent to the scene. After stabilizing him, the 061 ambulance has transferred the infarcted man to the Regional Hospital of Malaga, where he remains hospitalized, with no further details about his state of health being revealed at the moment. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Training a Doberman to think for himself- AI’s new leap to be able to act outside of human intervention: {Translation, summary}
– Generative artificial intelligence has taken a new leap forward to adapt to changing and dynamic environments and is already evolving towards a technology with a completely autonomous capacity for action, independent of human intervention.
– The new form of AI, baptized “Agentic” (agent), is an evolution of AI, which previously required human participation to perform actions. In addition to autonomy, adaptability and self-learning, the new “agents” multiply the possibilities of AI directly collaborating with third parties without oversight, learning continuously, improving production processes or solving very complex business problems. {2-way communications with people or machines other than its operators, on its own volition, without seeking permission first! Yikes! Hackers & spammers will absolutely love this! The Internet will be flooded with even more AI rubbish & scams than we already suffer. -Ed.}
– In the face of the new evolution of AI, the experts consulted by EFE stress that the key lies in responsibility, in an ethical, safe, equitable and transparent application; in ensuring that any technological innovation is at the service of social and economic progress; and in the importance of delimiting limits to clarify what can and cannot be done and differentiating between “powers” and “duties”. {Expecting ethical, safe, equitable and transparent actions from big-tech companies? You’ve got to be kidding me! That is NOT part of their business model: “we’ll do as we please, fines are simply a business expense”. -Ed.}
– The president of We The Humans -an independent think tank-, Juan Ignacio Rouyet, has observed that there is already an AI capable of making decisions, but the “agentic” can do so instantly and does not respond only based on its training data but also uses newly updated data it collects from the Internet in real time, and can also plan and create new actions to achieve a goal “without any human having given it that sequence of actions”.
– In statements to EFE, Rouyet pointed out that this evolved AI is “in the exploratory phase”, and explained that its functionalities include the possibility of monitoring a patient to make the most appropriate decisions on the most suitable treatment, or to improve the decisions of an executive because it can better weigh up the risks and optimize resources, or to create a “tireless” police force that permanently monitors cyber-attacks and responds instantly.
– Alberto García Arrieta, head of Data and AI at Accenture Spain, explained that this “evolution” of generative artificial intelligence makes it possible for AI to collaborate with humans or other “agents”, to specialize and learn continuously, and highlighted the usefulness they can have in the face of complex problems that require agility of execution combined with the use of a lot of information or in processes where several entities, departments or organizations are involved.
