AXARQUÍA
Torrential downpour deposits 45mm of rain in just a few minutes in upper Axarquía area of Malaga province:
– The mayor of La Viñuela, José Juan Jiménez, has reported that there has been “no flooding or damage” in Los Romanes and that the water will go straight into La Viñuela reservoir.
– A heavy downpour of water has left 45 litres of water in just a few minutes in the area around the hamlet of Los Romanes (La Viñuela) in the Axarquía, on the eastern side of Malaga province on Wednesday 13 November. Mayor of La Viñuela José Juan Jiménez has told SUR that the figure was recorded by “several residents” in their own rain gauges, as there are no official records in the area. A strong hail burst turns Alta Axarquía white: {Translation, summary}
– A strong hailstorm surprised the residents of Alta Axarquía at midday this Wednesday, around the municipalities of Almáchar and El Borge. The episode lasted a few minutes and did not cause serious material damage, since the size of the ice balls was small, as SUR has been able to confirm.
– Precipitation in the form of hail has been recorded both in the urban centers of these two municipalities, which are barely two kilometers from each other, and in the mountains full of Muscat of Alexandria grape vineyards that surround them. Thus, neighbors have captured images with the mountains dyed with a thin white layer, as if it were snow, although in reality it was hail. Photo: Francisco Barea. Benamargosa river overflows and begins to flood the town: {Translation}
– Heavy rainfall in the Upper Axarquia have caused early Wednesday afternoon the overflow of the river Benamargosa as it passes through this town of just 1,600 inhabitants. Despite the width of the riverbed as it passes through the municipality, the water has overflowed the bridge that crosses it and has begun to enter several streets, as reported to SUR by the mayor, Salvador Arcas (PSOE).
– “The situation is very complicated, we are warning the residents of the low houses to move to other high,” said the Benamargoseño alderman, who has detailed that the water has begun to enter several homes and commercial premises near the riverbed, as well as in the church of the Incarnation.
– The highest rainfall in the Axarquia has been recorded, until 15.00 hours this Wednesday, in Alfarnatejo, with 118.5 liters per square meter, 85.8 in the Salto del Negro in Cútar, next to the Benamargosa river, and 42.9 in Alcaucín, according to data collected by the Hidrosur network of the Junta de Andalucía. MALAGA PROVINCE
Trains grind to a halt in Malaga as torrential downpours hit area:
– Train delays due to storms. That is the situation in Malaga as of midday this Wednesday, 13 November, following the suspension of services on the two Cercanías commuter line and the connection with the Santa Ana station in Antequera, which affects the high-speed and medium-distance lines, as a result of the effects of the rain.
– The suspension of the medium-distance service between Malaga and Seville announced by the Spanish Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, on his social media, was followed by the suspension of the C2 Cercanías line service between Malaga city and Álora. This was followed at 1.30pm hours by the suspension of trains between Malaga and Fuengirola.
– Likewise, since 1:15pm rail traffic between Antequera and Malaga on the high-speed line (standard gauge) has been suspended due to adverse weather conditions that have caused flooding in the section of between Los Prados and Malaga city, affecting AVE trains, according to sources from the Spanish railway infrastructure company Adif. MALAGA CITY
Floods in the El Corte Inglés area: {Translation}
– The heavy rains throughout the Capital and around the Avenida de Andalucía have especially affected the shopping center of El Corte Ingles, which has been forced to close its doors. Although this morning opened its doors normally, shortly before 12 noon has been forced to evict all customers and staff in anticipation that the downpour became stronger. Apparently, the closure occurred moments before the water flooded the entire area, so no injuries were reported.
– Inside the supermarket, a huge column of water can be seen falling in the area where the hams are located, although it seems to have been brought under control.
– Very close to the former, the shopping center Larios Centro keeps its doors open although all the stores are closed. The management has decided to do so because there are many people who are taking shelter inside the enclosure to avoid the heavy rains. At the moment, no flooding problems are occurring in these facilities, although there are some leaks in some places. NERJA
The Ministry demands 5.4 million from the Nerja City Council for the treatment plant: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry for Ecological Transition resubmits the claim of a significant amount of money to the City Council of Nerja for the management of the first treatment plant of the easternmost coastal town of the province, which has been in operation since October 2020. Since then the central government and the Consistory nerjeño have been maintaining a tug of war over this monetary demand for the transfer of the plant to the City Council.
– The plenary of the Council has already been pronounced on several occasions flatly and unanimously rejecting this economic claim, which would reach 14.8 million over the next 25 years. In addition, last May the PP government team, with an absolute majority, announced that they had filed an economic-administrative claim against this requirement for 2024, which should be resolved by the Central Economic-Administrative Court “and which will be the one to clarify whether or not there is such an obligation, which we believe there is not, on the part of the City Council to pay”, as announced in a statement by the mayor, José Alberto Armijo (PP).
– After learning the amount of the so-called rate for water use 2025, published Monday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the alderman nerjeño has considered it “an injustice of the Government of Spain with Nerja and Maro.” “The Government of Spain intends that the nerjeños and mareños pay the amount of 5.4 million euros for something that no other citizen of the province of Malaga has had to pay regarding the co-financing of works declared of general interest, and thus the responsibility of the Government of Spain,” said Armijo in a statement.
– The mayor nerjeño has announced that the City Council “will continue to fight this injustice.” “Already the rate of water use that raised the Ministry for Ecological Transition in 2024 is being fought by economic administrative claim in the Central Economic Administrative Court and what it raises now will also be fought initially by the administrative route,” Armijo has expressed in the aforementioned statement. They find another decapitated male mountain goat in the area of Maro-Cerro Gordo: {Translation}
– New case of a male wild mountain goat killed and decapitated to get the ‘trophy’ in the natural area of the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo. Hikers who were walking this Tuesday in the surroundings of the urbanization El Nogal, in the municipality of Almuñécar, in the neighboring province of Granada, have located an adult specimen of this protected species, which was partially buried by stones to try to hide it.
– As SUR has learned, the animal had been killed by poachers in the last three or four days, according to the state of putrefaction that already began to have the trunk and limbs. The hikers have located the animal due to the strong smell it was giving off. Sources consulted by this newspaper have pointed out that it is a male specimen, about seven or eight years old.
– The hikers who have come across this decapitated specimen have immediately alerted the Civil Guard, which has referred the incident to the Service for the Protection of Nature of the Armed Institute (Seprona).
– Unfortunately, these types of events have been repeated in recent years. In November 2023, three wild goats were found decapitated in the natural area of Maro-Cerro Gordo, as already published in SUR. Photography enthusiasts warned then that the situation “is not new” and pointed to the “impunity” of poachers due to the “null” surveillance in the natural area shared by the provinces of Malaga and Granada. {I doubt locals would abandon that much fresh wild goat meat, it would fetch as much locally as a mounted goat-head trophy. If the head trophy was large enough to attract attention, the body would have been large as well, with many kilos of meat to be harvested. I suspect it’s either out of town trophy hunters, possibly with a well paid local guide, or the Santa Muerte church is up to it’s old tricks. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/hallan-ejemplar-macho-cabra-montes-decapitado-paraje-20241112211005-nt.html

Russia stages first missile attack on Kyiv since August, Ukraine says:
– Blasts boomed across Kyiv on Wednesday morning after officials said Russia launched its first missile attack on the Ukrainian capital since August, forcing elderly women and small children to take shelter in an underground metro station.
Ukrainians have been waiting for a big missile attack for months, worried that it could deal a new blow to the hobbled energy system and cause long blackouts as winter sets in.
– Air defences intercepted two incoming cruise missiles, two ballistic missiles and 37 drones across the country, the air force said. No casualties or major damage were reported in Kyiv, {despite photographic evidence to the contrary}.
“Putin is launching a missile attack on Kyiv right now,” Andriy Yermak, the head of the president’s office, wrote on Telegram.
Falling debris came down in the region outside Kyiv, injuring a 48-year-old man and causing a fire at a warehouse, the head of Kyiv region’s administration said.
Kyiv has faced Russian drone attacks almost nightly for weeks. City mayor Vitali Klitschko said a drone was still flying over central Kyiv in the morning. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/blasts-heard-ukraines-kyiv-reuters-witnesses-report-2024-11-13/

Meta will face antitrust trial over Instagram, WhatsApp acquisitions:
– Facebook owner Meta Platforms, must face trial in a U.S. Federal Trade Commission lawsuit seeking its break-up over claims that it bought Instagram and WhatsApp to crush emerging competition in social media, a judge in Washington ruled on Wednesday.
– Judge James Boasberg largely denied Meta’s motion to end the case filed against Facebook in 2020, during the Trump administration, alleging that the company acted illegally to maintain its social network monopoly. Meta, then known as Facebook, overpaid for Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 to eliminate nascent threats instead of competing on its own in the mobile ecosystem, the FTC claims. Why is the euro falling and could it hit $1?:
– The euro has fallen to one-year lows, reviving talk the currency could hit the $1 mark. Donald Trump’s U.S. election win raises the prospect of a hike in tariffs that could deal a fresh blow to the euro zone economy.
– At around $1.06 , the euro has slumped nearly 5% from more than one-year highs in September when a weakening economic outlook stopped it in its tracks. Euro/dollar is the world’s most actively traded currency pair.
– Could the euro hit $1? It’s possible. Parity is just 6% away and the euro has traded below that level before – once in the early 2000s and again for a few months in 2022, when U.S. interest rates were rising faster than euro zone ones as Europe grappled with the energy price surge that followed the war in Ukraine. For traders, the $1 mark is a key psychological level. So a fall below here could exacerbate negative euro sentiment, leading to a further depreciation.
– Big banks including JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank reckon a drop to parity could happen, depending on the extent of tariffs. Tax cuts could also fuel U.S. inflation and limit Federal Reserve rate cuts, making the dollar potentially more attractive than the euro. Bitcoin rises above $90,000 on Trump euphoria:
– Bitcoin broke through the $90,000 level on Wednesday, as its rally showed no signs of easing on expectations that Donald Trump as U.S. president will be a boon for cryptocurrencies. The world’s biggest cryptocurrency has become one of the most eye-catching movers in the week since the election and on Wednesday touched record highs. It was last up 5.49% at $93,158, marking a 32% rise since the Nov. 5 election.
– Smaller peer Ether has also risen 37% since election day, while dogecoin, an alternative, volatile token promoted by billionaire Trump-ally Elon Musk was up more than 150%. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/bitcoin-rises-above-90000-trump-euphoria-2024-11-13/
