The Malaga Lantern Festival: November 30 to February 15
– The Lantern Festival is warming up in Malaga. The artistic and light show, which is inspired by the traditional event that serves to bid farewell to the Chinese New Year, will take over the city from November 30 to February 15. Promoted by Ximenez Entertainment and Lantern Group, it will be held inside the capital’s Parque de Oeste.
– Tickets for the event cost between 15 and 20 euros, depending on the day and the number of people attending. Tickets can be purchased on the website https://festivaldelaslinternasmalaga.es/
– It will be a unique event in Spain that will try to introduce visitors to an ancient culture. It will have 600 lanterns and 4,000 points of light and will include a series of traditional Chinese activities such as a great Chinese New Year parade, a mural of wishes, lantern-making workshops, calligraphy and banners or theater performances, music and traditional dance.
– The enclosure will cover an area of three hectares and will be located in the central part of the park, next to the large lake. It will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., although access will be divided into four daily passes: at 6 p.m., 7.15 p.m., 8.30 p.m. and 9.45 p.m. It will be especially striking and colorful because all the lanterns will be handmade with materials brought expressly from China: steel rods, hand-painted silk and LED lights will be used for their elaboration. On the main stage you can watch circus performances performed by a group of performers from Zigong (Sichuan, China), with performances every hour. The show will last about 25 minutes. Visitors will be able to see hand juggling, jar balancing, the intriguing face-changing spectacle, and the skill of plate spinning, offering moments of magic and amazement.
– On November 30th opening day, December 1 and Chinese New Year week (January 27 to February 2), visitors will be able to enjoy a vibrant parade featuring traditional dragon dance, dynamic lion dance and an energetic dance performance with drums. In addition, interactive activities will be offered such as a calligraphy workshop and a photocall with Chinese props, providing a unique cultural experience for all ages.

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The judge traces Begoña Gómez’s accounts and demands her marriage certificate from the Registry: {Translation}
– Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has ordered the judicial police to “consult the numbering of the current accounts in which the investigated Begoña Gómez {pic} appears as holder”, wife of the President of the Government, whom he is investigating for alleged influence peddling, corruption in business, misappropriation and intrusiveness. He has also demanded from the Single Civil Registry of Madrid the “literal marriage certificate” of the investigated.
– In an order, to which Europa Press has had access, the head of the Court of
Instruction Number 41 of Madrid has also agreed to set a date for the statement as investigated the director of IE Business School and former counselor of the Community of Madrid with Esperanza Aguirre, Juan José Güemes. He has summoned him for next December 18, at 11.00 a.m., the same day that Begoña Gómez herself is scheduled to attend.
– Güemes appeared yesterday as a witness before the judge and came out as investigated after acknowledging that he had given the order to hire Begoña Gómez to run the Africa Center.
– According to legal sources consulted by Europa Press, the judge – in the framework of the interrogation – noted the contradictions between the statement of the executive and the version given in court by the director of Human Resources of IE, Sonsoles Blanca Gil de Antuñano, about the reasons that led to the hiring of the president’s wife, so he saw fit to recall her to appear again accompanied by a lawyer.
– Within the framework of the resolution, the instructor has also ordered that Sonsoles Blanca Gil de Antuñano be investigated in another Madrid court for an alleged crime of disobedience, “by not attending to the request made by this court in her appearance on October 16”.
– This battery of proceedings is part of the investigation led by the judge on the work of Begoña Gómez at the head of the IE Africa Center, dependent on IE, between 2018 and 2022. It is given the circumstance that in the complaint of Manos Limpias – which gave rise to the cause – it was indicated that Air Europa “agreed to pay 40,000 euros a year to the Africa Center” and that this agreement of Globalia and the Instituto de Empresa included the delivery of 15,000 euros a year in first class flights for the wife of the president of the Government and his team. The Supreme Court collects all the complaints against Sánchez for the ‘Begoña Gómez case’ before deciding whether to investigate them: {Translation}
– The Supreme Court (TS) has accumulated the complaints related to the ‘Begoña Gómez case’, against the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez {pic}, for
alleged crimes of prevarication and embezzlement by using the State Attorney’s Office to complain against the judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who investigates his wife, Begoña Gómez, as a previous step to decide whether to admit or investigate them, according to legal sources informed Europa Press.
– It was last July 31 when Vox, Hazte Oír and Iustitia Europa announced complaints against Sánchez in the Supreme Court, although those of Santiago Abascal also addressed against the Minister of Justice, Presidency and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, and the general lawyer of the State, David Vilas.
– In an order, to which Europa Press has had access, the Supreme Court admits the first complaint received, that of Iustitia Europa, and this includes accusations from Hazte Oír, and Vox, according to the mentioned sources.
– The one in charge of deciding the itinerary of these complaints is the magistrate Antonio del Moral, who has been designated rapporteur of admission, so it is in his hands to decide whether to close the doors of the high court or give them course.
***“PUBLIC MEANS” FOR ‘PRIVATE’ ENDS***
– Iustitia Europa denounced in its complaint that Sanchez used “public means, such as the State Attorney’s Office in order to devise a procedural strategy to protect his wife from the investigation of the Court of Instruction Number 41 of Madrid”.
– In the same line, Hazte Oír expressed itself in its complaint, reproaching that Sánchez “has destined the public patrimony and the means of the State Attorney General’s Office to a strictly private end”, that is, “the defense of purely private interests that have nothing to do with his condition as a member of the Government”.
– Vox also accused Sánchez of using the State Attorney General’s Office “for his personal interest”. “He continues to prostitute the institutions,” said the political party, which promised that it ”will continue to do everything possible to confront him.”
– It should be recalled that the High Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) rejected the three complaints filed against Judge Peinado for alleged prevarication: those filed by Sanchez and Gomez and that of journalist Maximo Pradera. AXARQUÍA
Four towns in Axarquía, with barely two hours of water a day due to damage to the pipes: {Translation, summary}
– The approximately 4,800 residents of the Axarquia municipalities of Almáchar, El Borge, Cútar and Comares are still, five days after the passage of the devastating DANA, unable to have a normalized water supply in their homes and businesses, due to the serious damage caused by the flood in the water infrastructure that crosses the riverbed.
– The technicians of the public water and sanitation company of the Mancomunidad Oriental, Axaragua estimate that this will not be fixed until the end of this week. For this reason, the municipalities have been receiving water for their storage tanks by tanker truck since last Saturday, when the reserves of their municipal reservoirs were exhausted.
– Thus, although the schedules are changing every day, the councils are barely able to offer the water supply up to two hours a day, as is the case of the largest of the four villages, Almáchar, with almost 1,900 registered residents. As reported from the Almachareño City Council, despite the supply by water tanks, “the level of the municipal tank is still very low”. “For this reason, we are forced to temporarily reduce the supply schedule, which will be from 20.00 to 22.00 hours,” they explained.
– For its part, the City Council of El Borge has detailed that the water supply was available from this past Sunday from 10.00 to 14.00 hours.
– Iin Comares, in addition to filling the tanks with tanker trucks, the tankers also visit the various rural districts, such as Perez, where demijohns have been filled for the elderly and most needy. Torrox organizes an information day – IN ENGLISH – covering administrative procedures aimed at foreign residents, Thursday, 21 Nov, 12pm: {Translation, summary}
– The City Council of Torrox and the Official Association of Administrative Managers of Malaga have organized an information day aimed at foreign residents and non-residents of the municipality of Axarquia, which already exceeds 22,000 inhabitants, of which a third are of foreign origin. During the activity, which will be conducted in English, will be announced the various municipal obligations, as well as the necessary administrative procedures related to traffic, registration and census, housing or payment of taxes, among others.
– “From the City Council we think it is very important to provide useful information to foreign citizens, and facilitate as far as possible all those steps they have to do,” said the mayor Torroxeño, Oscar Medina (PP), in a statement.
– The talk, free of charge and with free admission until full capacity, will take place this coming Thursday, November 21 at 12.00 pm in the Multipurpose Building, located in the central Avenida de Andalucía in Torrox-Costa. Russian President Putin signs a new doctrine that lowers the threshold for using nuclear weapons:
– Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a revised nuclear doctrine declaring that a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack on his country. Putin’s endorsement of the new nuclear deterrent policy comes on the 1,000th day after he sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. It follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles.
– The signing of the doctrine, which says that any massive aerial attack on Russia could trigger a nuclear response, reflects Putin’s readiness to threaten use of the country’s nuclear arsenal to force the West to back down as Moscow presses a slow-moving offensive in Ukraine. Moscow says Ukraine fired US-supplied long range missiles into Russia:
– Russia says Ukraine has fired US-supplied long-range missiles into the country, a day after Washington gave its permission for such attacks. Ukraine used the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) in a strike on Russia’s Bryansk region this morning, the ministry of defence in Moscow said.
Five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the region, it said.
– The strike represents the first time the long-range missiles have been used on Russia’s internationally-recognised territory after Washington signalled Ukraine had permission to do so. Russia has vowed to “react accordingly.”
– On Tuesday, Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia would “proceed from the understanding” that the missiles were operated by “American military experts”. “We will be taking this as a renewed face of the western war against Russia and we will react accordingly,” he told a press conference at the G20 in Rio de Janeiro.
– Moscow said on Monday that any strikes inside its territory with the US missules would prompt an “appropriate and tangible response”. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0mzjm7knw7o

Jeremy Clarkson to defy doctors’ orders and lead thousands of farmers from Diddly Squat as they descend on Westminster to protest against Labour’s ‘death’ inheritance tax raid:
– Farmers gathering for today’s mass protest in London warned that ‘things will get bad very fast’ if the government refuses to scrap plans for inheritance tax on farms. Thousands are set to descend on Westminster to vent their anger over what has been called the ‘family farm death tax’ introduced in last month’s Budget.
– Fuming Clarkson, 64, is currently recovering from a life-saving heart operation and was ordered not to go on the march by his doctors and to ‘avoid stress’. Despite this he – joined by co-star Kaleb Cooper – will lead ‘two coaches of farmers’ from Diddly Squat to demonstrate on the ‘hugely important issue’.
– National Farmers’ Union (NFU) leader Tom Bradshaw will tell his members they have been ‘stabbed in the back’ by Labour – after the party had ‘wooed the rural vote’ in its election campaign.
– His comments will follow an extraordinary intervention from tech billionaire Elon Musk, who last night accused Sir Keir Starmer’s administration of ‘going full Stalin’ against British farmers.
– Sir Keir Starmer has said that he understands changes to inheritance tax are ‘causing concern’ for farmers but insisted ‘the vast majority of farms’ will not be affected. MIDDLE EAST
Israeli airstrike hits central Beirut near key government buildings and embassies:
– An Israeli airstrike slammed into a densely populated residential area in Lebanon’s capital near key government and diplomatic buildings late Monday, killing at least five people and injuring 24, as the U.S. pressed ahead with cease-fire efforts.
– Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said two missiles hit the area of Zoqaq al-Blat neighborhood — where local U.N. headquarters and Lebanon’s parliament and prime minister’s office are located.
– The target of the airstrike remained unclear, and the Israeli army did not issue a prior warning. Ambulance sirens echoed through the streets as an Associated Press photographer on the scene saw significant casualties on the street. It was the second consecutive day of Israeli strikes on central Beirut after more than a month-long pause.
– On Sunday, a strike in the area of Ras el-Nabaa killed Hezbollah media spokesperson Mohammed Afif, along with six other people, including a woman. Later that day, four people were killed in a separate strike in the commercial district of Mar Elias. The Israeli military has not said what the target of that strike was.
– Also on Monday, Hezbollah launched dozens of projectiles against Israel. A rocket that hit the northern Israeli city of Shfaram killed one woman and injured 10, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services. Breaking News- Rafael Nadal retires from tennis at Davis Cup after Spain lose to Netherlands:
– Rafael Nadal’s professional tennis career is over, his final match a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands at the Davis Cup.
– That defeat, coupled with Carlos Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers losing the doubles rubber 7-6(4), 7-6(3) to Wesley Koolhof and Van de Zandschulp, saw Spain eliminated from the Davis Cup and with it came the end for Nadal, one of the sport’s most successful players of all time.
– Nadal had flashes of his old self during the loss to Van de Zandschulp, but they
were all too brief. A couple of aces in crucial moments. A snapped backhand overhead. A scampering chase after a lob that he got back with a spinning overhead while running away from the net.
Ultimately his game proved too meek to survive a powerful, modern player like Van de Zanschulp. Strokes that once would have pelted balls through the court ended up short, allowing the Dutchman to take the initiative off Nadal’s racket.
– With Nadal out it was left to Carlos Alcaraz to save him and to save Spain. Alcaraz got halfway there, winning his singles match, but then he and Marcus Granollers fell to Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof in straight sets in the doubles.
– Nadal sat with his teammates courtside, urging Granollers and Alcaraz on, standing and pumping his fists two at a time, trying to get them to hang in and give him one more chance at the court. Full article: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5933496/2024/11/19/rafael-nadal-retires-tennis-career/

RELIGION
Damning report highlights growing intolerance and violence against Christians in Europe:
– A new report from the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe (OIDAC Europe) has sounded the alarm about escalating violence and discrimination faced by Christians across the continent.
– In 2023, 2,444 anti-Christian hate crimes were documented across 35 European countries. These crimes ranged from vandalism and arson to physical violence and restrictions on religious freedoms. The findings reveal a concerning trend that has resulted in Christian communities feeling increasingly vulnerable.
– The report published on Friday highlighted France, the U.K., and Germany as areas of particular concern. France recorded nearly 1,000 hate crimes last year, making it the most affected country. The incidents included the desecration of churches and cemeteries, with at least 84 direct attacks on individuals.
– Meanwhile, the U.K. experienced over 700 incidents, a 15 percent increase compared to the previous year. One high-profile case involved the conviction of an individual for silently praying outside an abortion clinic, illustrating the growing tension around public expressions of faith.
– In Germany, there was a concerning 105 percent increase in anti-Christian hate crimes, climbing from 135 in 2022 to 277 in 2023. Churches were frequent targets, with vandalism and property damage often unreported in official statistics, according to the report. Estimates suggest at least 2,000 cases of property damage against religious institutions went unnoticed due to the lack of a clear political motive.
– The report outlines the various forms these attacks have taken. Vandalism accounts for the majority, making up 62 percent of incidents, followed by arson, threats, and physical violence. A small percentage of cases even involved attempted or completed murders.
– The growing self-censorship among Christians in Europe was also highlighted as an equally concerning issue. For the first time since records began in 1953, more Christians report feeling they must be cautious when speaking about their faith than those who feel free to express it openly. This shift marks a dramatic change from 1981 when 83 percent of Christians said they felt no barriers to discussing their beliefs. Now, only 40 percent feel the same way.
– Compounding the issue are restrictions on religious freedoms imposed by some European governments. Beyond high-profile legal cases like the U.K. prayer conviction, bans on religious processions and other policies have disproportionately affected Christians. Moves to secularize traditional Christian holidays have also become more frequent, and despite falling under the threshold of a hate crime, it is indicative of a gradual move away from Christian values.
– Experts warn that the real scale of the problem is far greater than official statistics suggest. Regina Polak, OSCE’s special representative for combating racism, xenophobia, and discrimination, described anti-Christian hate crimes as a “message of exclusion” that impacts not only the victims but society as a whole. OIDAC Managing Director Anja Hoffmann echoed this concern, emphasizing the significant number of unreported cases. She urged governments to take more proactive measures to protect Christian communities and ensure that hate crimes are accurately documented and addressed.
