ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER

 I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, for 7 weeks, I do a fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive a donation from 4% of subscribers. The 4% Club finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?

-Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods-
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope- there are benefits to being on the DigameXtra Donor’s lists, such as not needing to open an issue every 2 weeks to maintain your posting privileges, but only if you donate at least €30. Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address. Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.

Valle de Abdalajís has opted this year to bring back the Fiesta del Pan Duro, with many culinary activities, but also with a market of artisan producers, in which there will be many representatives from the village itself, from the Guadalhorce Valley region and from other parts of the province of Málaga. This is an ideal event not only for shopping but also to learn more about the cuisine of yesteryear.

– Sat & Sun, Nov 30th & Dec 1st.
Feria de la Chacina de Benaoján (Cured Meat Fair)
Benaoján hosts this annual event famous for top quality pork, where it will be possible to buy directly from local producers the different sausages and other pork products that are made there. It will be possible to buy other products such as cheeses and sweets. Live musical performances both days.

XX Zanahoria Mora Fest of Cuevas Bajas (Purple Carrot Fest)
This gastronomic event revolves around this seasonal and endangered tuber, the purple carrot. Among the most curious sausages on offer is the one made from chicken, ham, breadcrumbs and egg, among other ingredients.

Throughout the December bank holiday weekend – and even two days before – Malaga Park will host one of the most important gastronomic and commercial events for products made in the province. This will be a gathering of numerous producers who have signed up to the “Sabor a Málaga” promotional brand, who will be selling directly to customers. Christmas sweets, cold meats, cheeses, liqueurs, early harvest extra virgin olive oils and wines are some of the products that will be on sale during this marathon event in the historic centre of Malaga. In addition there will be various activities to promote Malaga’s gastronomy, such as live cooking demonstrations and live music.

SPAIN

FAKE NEWS ALERT- VAT for self-employed workers in Spain will NOT be scrapped, Treasury confirms:
– Self-employed workers in Spain had a brief moment to rejoice earlier this week when several media outlets reported that from 2025, autónomos earning less than 85,000 euros would be exempt from Charging VAT.
– However, on Wednesday November 20, the Spanish Treasury categorically denied these rumours, stating in no uncertain terms that little progress has been made in negotiations. Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance and the National Federation of Associations of Self-Employed Workers (ATA) have stressed no VAT exemption regime will come into force in Spain in January 2025.

The PP demands an anti-corruption plan, changing the election of the attorney general and regulating lobbies, as requested by the EU: {Translation}
– The PP has registered an initiative in Congress calling on the Government to take measures such as approving an anti-corruption strategy, changing the system for electing the State Attorney General and regulating lobbies in order to comply with the latest European report on the rule of law.
– In its non-legislative proposal, which the PP wants to debate in the plenary session of Congress, it is recalled that the European Commission’s 2024 Rule of Law Report on Spain shows that our country has ‘ample room for improvement’ so that the rule of law can continue to prosper.
– According to the PP, the report indicates that problems persist such as ‘the lack of judicial independence, the weakness in the fight against corruption, restrictions on freedom of the press, the difficulty in access to information, the lack of forcefulness in strengthening the rules on conflicts of interest, the lack of progress in the regulation of interest groups, the lack of respect for parliamentary procedures and the abuse of decrees, and the deterioration of democratic institutions’.
– It also stresses ‘with concern’ that a comprehensive strategy to prevent and combat corruption, to which it is legally obliged, has not yet been drawn up, and warns that the deficiencies detected ‘affect the economy and security, undermine justice and pulverise the well-being of society and the good conception that citizens may have of democratic institutions’.
– For this reason, and in order to comply with Europe, the Popular Group calls firstly for reform of the Organic Statute of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (EOMF) to bring the requirements for the election and term of office of the public prosecutor into line with European standards on the independence and autonomy of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
– It also calls for ‘stiffer penalties for crimes of embezzlement of public funds’ and ‘urgently approve and submit Spain’s global strategy to prevent and combat corruption’, as well as a ‘draft Law on Transparency and Integrity of the Activities of Interest Groups’ and another on Classified Information that takes into account European standards on access to official documents.
– It also urges ‘correcting the excessive use of the urgency procedure in the processing of legislative texts and reversing the abuse of the use of royal decree-laws’, and respecting the common framework for media services in the internal market. The Government will implement a deposit and return system for plastic bottles in two years: {Translation, summary}
– The Government will implement within two years and throughout the national territory the system of deposit, return and refund (SDDR) of single-use plastic bottles, after verifying that 41.3% of these containers were collected in the year 2023 only, compared to the target of 70%, set by the Waste Law for this year. This is indicated in the report, known this Friday, by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), which concludes that the separate collection targets set out in article 59 of the Law on Waste and Contaminated Soil for a circular economy are not achieved.
– The deposit, return and refund system is a mechanism for managing used packaging in which the consumer has to pay additional money when buying a packaged product, which will be reimbursed when returning the empty packaging. This formula, reminiscent of the traditional system used for glass bottles in the past, will be applied to single-use plastic bottles. Ukraine has lost over 40% of Russia’s Kursk region to counter-attacks, Kyiv military source says:
– Ukraine has lost over 40% of the territory in Russia’s Kursk region that it seized in a surprise incursion in August as Russian forces have mounted waves of counter-assaults, a senior Ukrainian military source said.
– The source, who is on Ukraine’s General Staff, said Russia had deployed 59,000 troops to the Kursk region since Kyiv’s forces swept in and advanced swiftly, catching Moscow unprepared 2-1/2 years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“At most, we controlled about 1,376 square kilometres (531 square miles), now of course this territory is smaller. The enemy is increasing its counterattacks,” the source said.
“Now we control approximately 800 square kilometres (309 square miles). We will hold this territory for as long as is militarily appropriate.”
– But Russian forces are still advancing in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main objectives were to occupy the entire Donbas, which consists of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and oust Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region. GASTRONOMIA

Malaga, home of the first national smash burger championship: {Translation, summary}
– The most spectacular burgers will take over the Port of Malaga for twelve days. From November 28 to December 9, the cruise terminal hosts the first national smash burger championship, which will feature the participation of 25 burger restaurants.
– Each hamburger restaurant, except the ‘Hall of burger’, will present in its food-truck an innovative proposal with smash meat that, unlike traditional hamburgers, is prepared with a technique that consists of smashing the meat on the hot griddle in the shape of disc creating a crisp exterior. With this cooking method it is claimed the full flavor of the meat is enhanced and its juiciness is preserved. In addition, there will be a space called ‘Hall of Burger’, where the La Muralla and Jenkin’s restaurants will be located, which won the title of Best Burger in Spain and Best Burger in Europe, respectively, in 2023, as well as El Barco by influencer Sergio Enciso.
– As announced by The Champions Burger, organizer of this contest, to accompany the burgers there will be the Cheeck’s food rucks (specializing in fried chicken) and Ybarra Truck (with fries). And for those with a sweet tooth there will be three sweet offerings: Ioan pastry (donuts and panettone) and Las Torres de Ciriaco (cheesecakes). HEALTH

Health insurance in Andalusia skyrockets- those over 65 years of age pay 115% more: {Translation}
– The cost of health insurance continues to rise in Spain, driven by inflation and other economic factors. According to Rastreator’s Price Index, the average price of a full health insurance policy has risen by 9.5% in the last year, from an average of 62 euros per month in 2023 to 68 euros in 2024. This trend could worsen if the government decides to apply the Insurance Premium Tax (IPS) to private health insurance, which is currently exempt. Carmen Reverte, head of health insurance at Rastreator, warns: ‘If this measure were to be implemented, clients’ premiums would skyrocket and the bill could rise by more than 20% per year, causing many policyholders or companies to once again opt to do without or reduce their coverage to avoid this increase, negatively affecting the sector and healthcare’.
– Andalusia, among the most expensive regions to take out health insurance. The place of residence is a key factor in the price of health insurance. According to the index, premiums can vary by up to 500 euros per year depending on the autonomous community. In the case of Andalusia, the average monthly price reaches 79 euros, placing it among the most expensive regions. However, Madrid leads this ranking with an average cost of 94 euros per month, followed by the Canary Islands and Navarre with 90 euros, and Catalonia with 88 euros per month.
– In contrast, the autonomous communities with the most affordable prices are Castilla y León (53 euros per month), Extremadura (54 euros) and Aragón (57 euros). This disparity reflects how insurers adjust premiums according to local healthcare costs and the level of demand.
– Age, another determining factor in price. The insurance premium also varies significantly according to the age of the insured. In Andalusia, young people between 18 and 24 pay an average of 35 euros per month, while those over 65 pay 130 euros, 115% more. Reverte explains: ‘From the age of 60 or 65 onwards, the number of companies offering medical cover decreases significantly, so there is less choice and therefore an increase in premiums. […] It is becoming increasingly common for insurers to offer specific products for this sector of the population’.
– Rastreator’s analysis also reveals that women are the main purchasers of health insurance, accounting for 57% compared to 43% of men. In addition, six out of ten Spaniards prioritise price when choosing their policy. This economic approach has led insurers to offer more affordable products, especially for young people, with prices below 50 euros per month in many cases.
– A complement to public health care. Health insurance has gained relevance as a complement to public health care. According to the report, 80% of Spaniards consider having private insurance to be an important benefit, especially in the workplace, where many companies include it as part of their packages to attract talent. Currently, more than 12 million people in Spain have health insurance, a figure that has grown by 50% in the last two decades.
– The industry landscape continues to evolve, influenced by inflation, government policies and the growing demand for private health services. For policyholders, comparing prices and reviewing coverage remains essential to avoid unnecessary expenses. WhatsApp begins to incorporate the transcription of voice messages: {Translation}
– WhatsApp has begun rolling out voice message transcriptions, a new feature that will allow users to read voice messages and is initially available in some languages, including Spanish. According to the instant messaging app, the transcriptions are made on the device, so personal voicemails remain end-to-end encrypted. ‘This means that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can see, hear or read them.’
– ‘Voice message transcripts are coming to WhatsApp – enjoy!’ wrote Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder, via his WhatsApp channel. The messaging app details in a note that while voice messages allow you to connect with friends and family in a more personal way, there are times when a user is in the middle of an activity in a noisy place or receives a long voice message and can’t stop to listen to it. ‘For times like these, WhatsApp introduces voicemail transcriptions. Voice messages you receive can be transcribed to text so you can join conversations no matter what you’re doing,’ the messaging network says.
– Transcriptions will be rolled out worldwide over the next few weeks. They will start with a few languages, but WhatsApp plans to add more in the coming months. FINANCIAL

Treasury warning for home sellers- these are the current tax rights and obligations for owners over 65 years of age: {Translation}
– Turning 65 is, for most people, one of those goals that are so difficult to reach, not only because many leave working life, but also because reaching that age brings with it certain tax benefits. For all of them, the Treasury has reminded them of their tax obligations when selling a home.
– The capital gain derived from the sale of a primary residence may be exempt from IRPF if the owner fulfils certain conditions. Thus, according to the regulations, people over 65 years of age do not have to declare this type of gain. However, this benefit does not apply if the property sold is a second residence or if it is divided between the bare owner and the usufructuary, as occurs in some cases of inheritance.
– According to the Inland Revenue, this benefit applies both to ‘onerous or lucrative’ transactions and to those carried out in exchange for an annuity or temporary income. However, for the exemption to be total, all the owners of the property must have reached the age of 65. Otherwise, the benefit will only apply to the part corresponding to the owner who fulfils this condition.
– An alternative is the reinvestment of the amount obtained in an annuity, which allows regular payments for life, and which is exempt from taxation up to a maximum of 240,000 euros. However, the annuity must be constituted within six months of the sale, and its structure must meet certain legal requirements. For example, the beneficiaries must not be allowed to exceed the limits established by the regulations.
– What about second homes? Unlike the main residence, second homes do not enjoy the same tax benefits: the capital gain generated by the sale of the property will be subject to personal income tax.
– In addition, any property, even if it is empty, can generate an imputation of real estate income, calculated on the cadastral value of the property. In this way, between 1.1% and 2% can increase the taxpayer’s tax burden if the corresponding declaration is not made.
– For their part, retired people have tax deductions in some autonomous communities for the over-65s in the rental of housing, while some local councils apply reductions in the Real Estate Tax (IBI), which can reach up to 75%.
