ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER

 I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, for 7 weeks, I do a fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive a donation from 4% of subscribers. The 4% Club finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?

– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope- there are benefits to being on the DigameXtra Donor’s lists, such as not needing to open an issue every 2 weeks to maintain your posting privileges, but only if you donate at least €30. Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, it is set at €50 by default):

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

MALAGA PROVINCE

The College of Nursing describes the shortage of professionals in Malaga as “alarming”: {Translation, summary}
– The College of Nursing describes as “alarming” the deficit of professionals in the Malaga healthcare system. It recalls that it is one of the provinces with the lowest ratio of nurses in Spain and requires “urgent measures” to “ensure the quality of care and patient safety”. The institution launched this message after the Congress of Deputies recently gave the green light for the second time to the popular legislative initiative (ILP) to establish minimum ratios of nurses.
– According to data provided by the College, the European Union average is 8.83 nurses per thousand inhabitants while in Spain it is 6.3, “which puts our country at a significant disadvantage”. But Andalusia and Malaga are even worse, with indicators of 5.6 and 4.8 respectively.
– With these figures – which include public and private healthcare – the province is almost half the European ratio. Hence the College concludes that “in Malaga, the situation is even more alarming” than in the national context.
– The president of the professional institution of Malaga, José Miguel Carrasco, estimates that the incorporation of some 1,500 nurses is urgently needed to cover the most pressing deficits. These deficiencies are not new, and have been denounced for years.
– This is the second time that the legislative initiative is being processed in the Lower House. After gathering the support of 660,000 people, the ILP was registered in Congress in 2018 and by 2020 the Plenary admitted it for processing. However, the text remained buried in a drawer and after 83 extensions {Yikes!} in the deadlines for amendments it declined due to the dissolution of the Cortes.
– Carrasco emphasized that “in Malaga we suffer one of the worst ratios of nurses in Spain, which has a negative impact on patient safety and the quality of care we can offer”. Therefore, he demanded that “this law does not remain in parliamentary procedures and materializes in concrete facts that really benefit the public and professionals”. In his opinion, the low ratios are the result of “poor planning and lack of investment”. As a contrast, he gave the example of Navarre and the Basque Country. “Each autonomous community decides what it invests in and here it does not invest enough. There, on the other hand, there is more investment and better contracts,” he said.
– The Spanish Private Healthcare Alliance (ASPE) was quick to express its criticism, understanding that the proposal “is not realistic”. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/colegio-enfermeria-tacha-alarmante-deficit_0_2002982355.html

MALAGA CITY

The Automobile Museum opens a new temporary exhibition on the Porsche 911: {Translation}
– The Automobile and Fashion Museum of Malaga (MAM) has launched a new temporary exhibition for the Christmas season, entitled ‘Novecientosonce. Porsche, the legend’ offers a journey through the history of this car, the Porsche 911, from its beginnings in 1963 to the present day.
– The exhibition proposes “a privileged visit in which the same space as the MAM becomes the epicenter of the eight generations of the Porsche 911,” they said in a statement, in which they noted that this exhibition will be open to the public until January 7 and can be visited with general admission to the museum space.
– The MAM carries out this temporary exhibition in collaboration with Centro Porsche Marbella, the Club Sur de Europa, Hermanos Mora, Curro Rodríguez, Talleres de León and Autoescuelas Ruta 7 Picasso Collection.
– The legend of the Porsche 911 was born at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. It was September 12, 1963, when Porsche presented the successor to the 356. This new sports car, initially called the 901, took up a great inheritance. When the new model was launched in 1964, it was called 911, as a result of a dispute over trade name rights with the French automaker Peugeot. The 911 was quickly accepted as a “real” Porsche, as the performance of the new sports car “exceeded all expectations and the foundations were laid for an unparalleled global career”.
– The Automobile and Fashion Museum of Malaga will open its doors at its usual hours throughout the Christmas period except on December 25 and January 1, when it will be closed. On December 24 and 31; and January 5, the MAM will be open until 2.30 pm; and on January 6 will open from 11.00 am. NERJA

Nerja City Council opens two dog parks next to the Ciudad Deportiva and the Verano Azul: {Translation}
– The City Council of Nerja has enabled two dog parks, known as Agility Training Circuit. These new areas, which have involved a municipal investment of 20,000 euros, are located next to the Sports City and Verano Azul Park, and have various facilities that allow animals to socialize and enjoy outdoor recreational activities. The Councilor for Municipal Services, María del Carmen López, has visited the parks highlighting that “these spaces are specifically designed so that dogs can enjoy a safe and suitable environment for their recreation”.
– With these dog parks, the City Council seeks to offer an alternative to pet owners who want their dogs to be able to run freely in a controlled environment. Both are equipped with different play modules such as seesaws, tunnels, walkways, palisade, slalom, and have water fountains. “With this action we contribute to the development of a municipality in which animals also have access to adequate spaces for their enjoyment and welfare,” concluded the councilor, who has appealed to the responsible use of these new dog parks.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Vélez-Málaga says goodbye to nightly water cuts after almost a year and a half: {Translation, summary}
– After 18 months suffering nightly water cuts, since June 30, 2023, the nearly 86,000 inhabitants of Velez-Malaga are now breathing easier, after suspending from Monday the City Council of the capital of the Axarquia supply interruptions due to the abundant rains this past fall and the increase in the maximum allocation per capita authorized by the Junta de Andalucía after the last drought management committee, going from 180 to 200 liters.
– Thus, since this week residents in the eleven nuclei that make up the extensive municipality of the capital of the Axarquia no longer have to be aware of whether they are left without supply in their homes for not having cisterns or tanks. The night cuts have been oscillating in duration, but this past September were set between 22.00 and 7.30 hours.  {Readers in Torrox Costa report a return of “almost normal” water pressure late at night. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/velez-fin-cortes-nocturnos-agua-20241223145542-nt.html

EUROPE

Putin welcomes Slovak PM to Moscow, a rare visit by EU leader:
– Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday hosted Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico, in a rare visit to the Kremlin by an EU leader since Moscow’s all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
– Fico arrived in Russia on a “working visit” and met with Putin one-on-one on Sunday evening, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia’s RIA news agency. According to Peskov, the talks were expected to focus on “the international situation” and Russian natural gas deliveries.
– Russian natural gas still flows to some European countries, including Slovakia, through Ukraine under a five-year agreement signed before the war that is due to expire at the end of this year. At a summit in Brussels on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told EU leaders that Kyiv has no intention of renewing the deal, something Fico insisted will harm his country’s interests. Romanian Gov’t Hijacked by Socialists In Parliament After Court Invalidated Public Elections Because They Didn’t Like The Anti-EU Winner:
– Romanian lawmakers on Monday voted narrowly in favor of a new pro-European coalition government led by incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu {pic}. The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature.
– The new Parliament created coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party, or PSD, the center-right National Liberal Party, PNL, the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities.
– It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a Dec. 1 parliamentary election, a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner (winner).
– “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Ciolacu (who placed third in the invalidated public elections), whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement Monday. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” {You stole the election from the public, and now you ask for their trust? -Ed}
– Romani’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It’s widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy.
– Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it’s entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns.”
– Romania was plunged into turmoil after Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the Dec. 8 runoff, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race.
– Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organize the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate.
– George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all lawmakers from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. SPACE

A NASA spacecraft, about to ‘touch’ the Sun in a record approach: {Translation, summary}
– On Christmas Eve, this NASA spacecraft the size of a small car will reach its final goal: to enter the burning atmosphere of our star until it reaches 6.1 million km from its surface.
– There, it will face terrible temperatures of half a million degrees Celsius to take measurements and images that reveal the secrets of that hostile environment. And miraculously, if everything goes as expected, it will emerge from hell intact.
– “The Parker probe is an engineering marvel,” Alicia Mendoza Hill, program executive in NASA’s heliophysics division in Washington, told this newspaper. It will avoid melting thanks to a heat shield that is only 12 cm thick, “capable of keeping the instruments inside at an ambient temperature of about 30º C,” he explains. Interestingly, this shield is similar to the plates used on old space shuttles, but has an extra layer of carbon fiber and is coated with white ceramic paint.
– The distance to the Sun will not be the Parker’s only record. During the approach, the probe will reach an incredible speed of 692,000 km per hour, the fastest object created by humanity. “It’s like going from Washington to Philadelphia, which normally takes six hours by car, in one second,” the researcher compares.
– NASA’s goal is to analyze the composition of the solar atmosphere. Parker will pass through plumes of plasma that are still connected to the Sun and will be close enough to plunge into a solar flare. A vision that generations of scientists have dreamed of making come true. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/ciencia/sonda-parker-nasa-punto-tocar-sol-primera-20241216162530-nt_amp.html
