ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER
I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do a fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive a donation from 4% of subscribers. The 4% Club finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS!
Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?
– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope- there are benefits to being on the DigameXtra Donor’s lists, such as not needing to open an issue every 2 weeks to maintain your posting privileges, but only if you donate at least €30. Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, it is set at €50 by default):

On the eGift card purchase form, enter the DigameXtra email as the recipient, as shown below in Spanish and with English translation.

IMPORTANT FUNFRAISER UPDATE: 8 Jan
New Submission Rule Goes Into Effect
So far, 109 of the 4946 subscribers (2.1%) have donated to the 2024 Holiday Fundraiser. Therefore, I have extended the fundraiser for another month. If you want DigameXtra to continue in its current form, free to read and subscribe, you must help support it!
Due to the weak response to the 2024 Holiday Fundraiser, in an effort to stimulate more donations, I am instituting a rules change. I regret this is necessary. However, to continue providing a quality publication to the loyal DigameXtra supporters, I must now cut back on services provided to those who choose not to support this project. This will allow me to focus on new features, more high quality content, attracting new readers and sponsors, and providing better support services to my supporters and sponsors. There are some subscribers selling thousands of euros in merch per year who never donate. Others, managing businesses and service organizations, with monthly budgets of several thousands of euros, ask me to promote their events & services, yet decline to sponsor for only €5 per week. Sorry, after 7 years of editing 8 hours a day, and considering the current financial state of affairs, that cannot continue. This is the only solution I could come up with. If the goal of 200 donations is achieved by the end of January I will rescind this new rule. Let’s hope that is the case. -Ed.
NEW RULE
Anyone can read DigameXtra for free- on the website, or by email subscription.
However, subscribers who wish to actively participate by making submissions will need to have donated at least €20 to the 2024 DigameXtra Holiday Fundraiser. If you won’t make the effort to donate just 39 cents a week (€20/yr), then please refrain from making submissions, as I have supporters – the donors and sponsors that pay the production expenses – that require my attention. Thank you.
I asked most of the 40 donors who stopped by to see me if they thought this rule change was appropriate. All of them agreed it was, and most suggested I should move to a paid subscription model as well. Some expressed indignation that about one hundred donors are funding the operation so 4800 subscribers can have a free ride. Well, I am not ready to take the leap to requiring paid subscriptions, but that is the trend now for daily Internet blog newsletters. These typically only show a sample of the content for free. To see the entire issue in these, you must have a paid subscription, as on the popular blogging website, Substack. -Ed.
The Submission Rules Page has been updated to reflect this change.

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The majority of self-employed workers will pay more in 2025, some with increases of more than a thousand euros per year!: {Translation, summary}
– The new Social Security contribution model that was launched for more than 3.3 million self-employed workers in 2023 will continue to be deployed in 2025. For the third fiscal year, their contribution base will fall into one of the 15 brackets established according to the different ranges of net income, between less than 670 euros per month and more than 6,000 euros.
– This year, the monthly contribution will increase in nine of these fifteen brackets.
– For the lowest income levels, the first six – less than 1,166 euros of net monthly yields – there will be a reduction of the contributions, but for the highest ones – from 1,700 euros per month – there will be increases, which will exceed one thousand euros. All this relates to the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI), which rises to 0.80% for all workers and companies.
– In the early stages of this new fiscal year, the Social Security updated the official calculator so that the self-employed can simulate the contribution they will have to pay according to their expected income. The tool, which can be accessed through the ‘Import@ss’ portal [ https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/tramites/simuladorRETAPublico ], allows workers to know the minimum and maximum base for which they should contribute.
– A practical case. Thus, for example, if the self-employed person chooses the lowest income bracket, i.e. less than 670 euros per month, the Social Security would assign him/her a minimum contribution of 205.23 euros per month and a maximum contribution of 225.75 euros per month, which he/she could pay to avoid tax bills or refunds. In the event that this same self-employed person foresees a higher income, of more than 1,501 euros per month, the simulator would assign him/her a minimum contribution of 301.68 euros per month and a maximum of 533.8 euros per month. And if the self-employed opted for the highest income bracket, of more than 6,000 euros per month, the minimum contribution would increase. In this case, the Social Security advises paying at least 605.4 euros per month and a maximum of 1,541 euros per month. The latter corresponds to the maximum base of the system. Almeida declares the PSOE (socialist) as a “corrupt organization” and that García Ortiz is hiding something when he “destroys” evidence: {Translation, summary}
– The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida {pic}, has reaffirmed that the PSOE is a “corrupt organization” and that the state attorney general, Álvaro García
Ortiz, makes an “exercise of concealment” when he “destroys (possible) evidentiary elements”. It seems reasonable to think “that the state attorney general was trying to hide certain evidence that could be incriminating.” “It is not necessary to be a state lawyer, nor is it necessary to be a prosecutor to know that when there is a judicial investigation underway, not preserving evidentiary elements is not cooperating with the Administration of Justice”, he insisted.
– “These things can not be ignored, that the secretary of the PSOE is currently in court. That Pedro Sanchez’s driver in the primaries is currently indicted. It was done from the party and it was done from the government. We have evidence already pointing to Minister Ángel Víctor Torres. It is that we have evidence that points to the president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol. Therefore, I think it is not risky to say that in the PSOE there is a plot and a corrupt organization,” he reaffirmed. This plot, in the words of Almeida, “has taken advantage of its links with the PSOE and its links with the Government of Spain to be able to do business.” “This is said by the Supreme Court, which has imputed José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García, who are not two people who are strangers to Pedro Sánchez”, he continued.
– “It is that we are talking about the fact that the president’s wife is imputed and that it is accredited that Moncloa staff worked for the master’s degree of Begoña Gómez,” he has added. “When we talk about corruption, we should not only talk about corruption in criminal terms, we can also talk about it in political and ethical terms. To me it seems to be corruption, even if it is not a crime, that the wife of the President of the Government uses an assistant paid by all Spaniards to ask for funds from companies that are under the regulation and supervision of her husband. Is it a crime? Even if it is not from an ethical point of view, it is absolutely reprehensible and reproachable”, he explained.
– Almeida is clear that for the PSOE, “it is convenient that this is in the courts because while a criminal proceeding is being processed, we are not talking about ‘exemplarity’, which is fundamental in politics”. “And exemplarity is that your brother cannot live in Portugal to pay less taxes. How can the President of the Government tell Spaniards to pay taxes if his brother lives in Portugal, working in Badajoz, to pay less taxes than it would be appropriate to live in Spain? Is that a crime? Possibly it is not a crime. Is that exemplary? It is not exemplary,” he said. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/madrid/noticia…

– Those over 65 years of age who are holders of the Andalucía Junta 65 card will
continue to have discounts of up to 55% on optical products this year. The Ministry of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality has extended until December 31, 2025 the agreement with the Official College of Opticians-Optometrists of Andalusia for these bonuses from February 1 this year.
– This commitment covers both independent businesses and optical sections in pharmacy offices. There are currently more than 400 optical establishments participating in the program. With this program, people can benefit from a 30% discount on different optical products on the retail price if they are holders of the Andalucía Junta 65 card, and a 55% discount if they are holders of this card in its gold mode.

Andalusian merchants ask that sales periods be regulated again, “Every year they make less sense”: {Translation}
– The Confederación Comercio Andalucía, the Andalusian trade association, has assured that the sales periods “make less sense every year”, and has urged that they be re-regulated. In a statement, traders in the region point out that these periods are ceasing to work. In this line, they expect that the positive effect of the sales in January “are diluted”, and “does not last more than a week”, as “each year the sales days are extended”.
– For the confederation, the liberalization of the sales, which was carried out at the state level in 2012, has taken away all sense of special value to these periods, hurting “fundamentally” the small trade, “which is the one that has less ability to cope with a situation where prices are permanently lowered.” Andalusian traders believe that prolonging this situation, in which throughout the year “accumulate sales periods, discount campaigns and offers of all kinds,” only favors “large companies in the sector, large e-commerce platforms and large surfaces”.
– Consequently, they have demanded that the sales periods be re-regulated, since, according to them, “it would give the sector a better balance, would allow the different commercial formats to compete on equal opportunities and would increase certainty for consumers”.
– The confederation has pointed out that trade is a sector that brings wealth to the territory where it is implanted, in addition to helping its structuring and social cohesion, so it asks the Junta de Andalucía to seek a balance between the different commercial formats.
– Finally, the Andalusian traders assure that “they will continue to raise their demands until they are heard”. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/noticia…

UK facing 10 inches of snow – all 41 counties that could see white-out this week:
– More snow is coming to all four nations of the UK over the next 48 hours, according to the latest forecasts, as new weather maps show several inches settling amid a chilly start to the year.
– Forecasts suggest as much as 10 inches will be settling overnight in some parts of the country into Tuesday morning, with significant accumulations expected as far south as Hertfordshire. The cold front will begin to sweep in along northern and western coasts in the early hours of tomorrow morning, moving further inland throughout the day and into the evening. A second wintry blast will then move through the English Channel on Wednesday afternoon, affecting much of the south coast and even reaching London. ENERGY CRISIS
The electricity bill rises up to 22% in 2025: {Translation, summary}
– With the arrival of 2025, the price of food, housing, telephone rates of the main operators… and also the cost of the electricity bill have gone up. After three and a half years of reduced rates to reduce the impact of the energy crisis resulting from the war between Russia and Ukraine on Spanish households, the VAT on electricity has returned to 21% since January 1.
– To this must be added a 33% increase in regulated charges applied by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, a cost that is integrated into both the power term and the consumption term. According to estimates by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), this will lead to a price increase of around 13% in general terms, which means an increase of more than 100 euros in the annual cost of the electricity bill.
– Other sources, such as the online comparator Kelisto.es, specify the increase in the free market for an average consumer at around 121 euros per year (+22.24%); while those in the regulated market, where it is more difficult to estimate due to the constant variation in prices, would pay around 140 euros more (+19.11%). GASTRONOMIA
Ronda wine wins competition, tops 31 others in Malaga to be the Junta’s top choice:
– A wine from Ronda has been chosen to represent the Junta de Andalucía. It is a red wine called Los Cipreses 21, produced by the Ronda winery Huerto de la Condesa, which was selected in December by a tasting committee of the regulatory council of the Malaga designation of origin brand (DOP), which in turn includes the Sierras de Málaga wines.
– “The selection was made by means of a blind tasting procedure among 32 other wines from the Sierras de Málaga DOP, all aged for over12 months”, explained Agustín Millán, who is in charge of the winemaking processes at this winery.
– This wine is produced using 50/50 Garnacha and Syrah grape varieties, “a typical blend used both in Spain and in France.” Millán continued: “The Garnacha variety gives it red fruit and an agile passage, while the Syrah gives it mainly black fruit, spices and a somewhat more powerful structure, which compensates for the lightness of the Garnacha.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/ronda/wine-made-ronda-chosen-represent-the-junta-20250107074526-nt.html

The Civil Guard warns about the ‘sowing method’, this is how thieves act in parking lots: {Translation, summary}
– The Civil Guard of Navarra has warned through a video on TikTok about the dangerous “sowing method”, a modus operandi used by criminals in parking lots of commercial areas to steal belongings from the vehicles of their victims. This method, characterized by coordination between several individuals, seeks to take advantage of a moment of distraction to commit the theft.
– According to a police spokeswoman in the video, “in what is known as the sowing method, the criminals act in a coordinated manner, usually in commercial areas, select their victim, follow them to the vehicle once they have made their purchases and, once there, one of the criminals distracts the victim, and the other takes advantage of the moment to steal the purse from the vehicle”.
*HOW THIEVES ACT AND HOW TO PREVENT THESE SITUATIONS*
– It is called the ‘sowing method’ with the idea of sowing to reap fruits, since the criminals “sow” distractions with the aim of “picking up” other people’s goods, such as purses, wallets and cell phones.
– This type of theft begins with a premeditated distraction, usually by making the victim believe that he or she has dropped a personal item, such as coins or keys. While the person inspects the floor or gets out of the car to pick up what he or she has supposedly lost, a second accomplice takes advantage of the distraction to steal valuables from inside the vehicle.
– In a recent case investigated by the Guardia Civil in the Cuenca de Pamplona, the perpetrators not only stole a victim’s purse, but also used her bank cards to withdraw cash and, in addition, applied for a credit in her name using the stolen documentation.
– The Guardia Civil insist that this method is especially frequent in parking lots of commercial areas during busy periods, such as Christmas or sales. For this reason, they recommend to always keep valuable belongings in sight and not to trust unknown people who try to distract our attention.
