ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER
I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do a fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive a donation from 4% of subscribers. The 4% Club finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS!
Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?
– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope- there are benefits to being on the DigameXtra Donor’s lists, such as not needing to open an issue every 2 weeks to maintain your posting privileges, but only if you donate at least €30. Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, it is set at €50 by default):

IMPORTANT FUNFRAISER UPDATE: 8 Jan
New Submission Rule Goes Into Effect
So far, 114 of the 4946 subscribers (2.3%) have donated to the 2024 Holiday Fundraiser. Therefore, I have extended the fundraiser for another month. If you want DigameXtra to continue in its current form, free to read and subscribe, you must help support it!
Due to the weak response to the 2024 Holiday Fundraiser, in an effort to stimulate more donations, I am instituting a rules change. I regret this is necessary. However, to continue providing a quality publication to the loyal DigameXtra supporters, I must now cut back on services provided to those who choose not to support this project. This will allow me to focus on new features, more high quality content, attracting new readers and sponsors, and providing better support services to my supporters and sponsors. There are some subscribers selling thousands of euros in merch per year who never donate. Others, managing businesses and service organizations, with monthly budgets of several thousands of euros, ask me to promote their events & services, yet decline to sponsor for only €5 per week. Sorry, after 7 years of editing 8 hours a day, and considering the current financial state of affairs, that cannot continue. This is the only solution I could come up with. If the goal of 200 donations is achieved by the end of January I will rescind this new rule. Let’s hope that is the case. -Ed.
NEW RULE
Anyone can read DigameXtra for free- on the website, or by email subscription.
However, subscribers who wish to actively participate by making submissions will need to have donated at least €20 to the 2024 DigameXtra Holiday Fundraiser. If you won’t make the effort to donate just 39 cents a week (€20/yr), then please refrain from making submissions, as I have supporters – the donors and sponsors that pay the production expenses – that require my attention. Thank you.
I asked most of the 40 donors who stopped by to see me if they thought this rule change was appropriate. All of them agreed it was, and most suggested I should move to a paid subscription model as well. Some expressed indignation that about one hundred donors are funding the operation so 4800 subscribers can have a free ride. Well, I am not ready to take the leap to requiring paid subscriptions, but that is the trend now for daily Internet blog newsletters. These typically only show a sample of the content for free. To see the entire issue in these, you must have a paid subscription, as on the popular blogging website, Substack. -Ed.
The Submission Rules Page has been updated to reflect this change.
Editor’s Note 9Jan25: I’ll be removing most of these annoying announcements next week. I don’t like them any more than you do, but it has been effective in motivating the stragglers to get their donations in.

SPAIN
Spain begins events marking 50 years since dictator Franco’s death:
– Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday presided over the first in a year-long series of events to mark 50 years since the death of dictator Francisco Franco, with a warning that the far-right is once again ascending in Europe.
– Under the slogan “Spain at Liberty”, the centre-Left government commemorated the country’s transition to a parliamentary democracy at a packed auditorium in Madrid’s Reina Sofia Museum.
– Franco died in 1975, aged 82, after ruling Spain for nearly four decades. The first free elections were held in 1977 and a new constitution passed by referendum in 1978.
– “Let’s celebrate that in 1975, Spanish society decided to bet on democracy and freedom,” Sanchez said.
“Autocratic regimes and values are advancing in half the world. The fascism we thought we’d left behind is now the third political force in Europe,” Sanchez said, adding that they were supported by “the richest man on the planet”, referring to billionaire Elon Musk, whom he did not name.
– The commemorative events aim to highlight Spain’s economic, social and political transformation, pay tribute to those who fought for it and to prevent younger generations from being “seduced by the siren calls” of far-right ideologies, he said.
– The decision to hold the events has been controversial in an already polarised political environment. The conservative opposition People’s Party (PP) – founded by former Francoist officials – and the far-right Vox party both say they will not participate. A January survey commissioned by newspaper El Pais found Vox had gained support for the third consecutive month, with 1 in 6 of those polled intending to vote for the party. January 8, as a midshipman on the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián Elcano’, which will depart next Saturday from the Port of Cádiz to begin its 97th training cruise, an event which will be attended by her parents King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
– The heir to the throne, along with the rest of the students of the third year of the Marín Naval Military School, will board the training ship this Wednesday for a first contact with what will be their ‘home’ for the following months, in which will tour a total of eight countries. The trawling sector returns to work, “resigned” to the cuts imposed by the EU: {Translation}
– Faced with this complex scenario, the Spanish trawling sector agreed to a strike since January 1 against the agreement reached by the ministers of the industry of the European Union, which drastically cut fishing days for this fleet. They have decided to return to fishing from Tuesday when two trawlers based in the port of Fuengirola and three others in Marbella went back to work. Neither those of Estepona or Caleta de Velez have left, but are scheduled to do so already this Wednesday.
– “What the EU ministers want is that trawling disappears, that we scrap the boats, to allow even more fish to be harvested by Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia, which fish in the same waters, these countries do not apply restrictions,” argued Velez ship owner David Pendón, who has said that the 21 boats in Caleta will return to fishing from Wednesday, so that in the fish markets can be restocked.
– “The EU has promised us aid to change the nets which would allow us more fishing days, that’s at least 15,000 euros per boat, and those ships without flying doors, are another 70,000 euros,” complained this shipowner of Caleta de Velez. “Typically aid for fishing efforts are received a year and a half after the term they represent ” he said.
– The Council of Fisheries Ministers of the EU agreed early last December to a 79% cut in days at sea for trawlers in the Mediterranean, which would be 27 or 28 fishing days for trawlers in 2025, but supposedly established sustainability measures to moderate such a cut. In 2024, trawlers were able to fish about 130 days in the Mediterranean.
– “In France, where there are 60 trawlers, they are not going to comply, and neither in Italy- why are we in Spain the only country where you have to comply to the letter what they say in the European Union,“ wondered the shipowner. Two online platforms investigated for fraud in the sale of tickets for the Alhambra in Granada dismantled: {Translation, summary}
– The Technological Investigation Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Granada has arrested two 44-year-old citizens as alleged perpetrators of a crime of continued fraud after, allegedly, they had sold bogus tickets online to visit a monumental complex in this Andalusian capital.
– The detainees, of Spanish nationality, had no police record, and, after giving a statement, they have been released with charges, waiting to be called to appear before the authority. judicial.
– The National Police has explained in its press release about this operation that the
investigation had its origin in more than twenty complaints received in relation to the purchase of online tickets to “visit the monumental complex of Granada through two platforms”. All of these purchases took place between June and October of this year, for amounts ranging between 24.95 and 260 euros. The complaints reported the existence of two websites that offered online tickets to visit the monument. On these pages, the victims had paid for one or more tickets using credit or debit cards, having then received a confirmation email with a QR code.
– However, the next day or on subsequent dates, they again received new emails informing them of the cancellation of their visit because the company “was in a process of internal restructuring and pre-bankruptcy proceedings.” None of the emails received by the victims offered them “the possibility of recovering the money invested in the tickets, nor the offer of any compensation for these circumstances,” the National Police have detailed. Spain’s Navy frigate Victoria locates one of the most modern Russian military vessels near Andalusia: {Translation, summary}
– The monitoring and tracking of Russian warships has been repeated on a regular basis in recent times, due to the intense activity they register in waters close to Spain in their navigation through the Mediterranean; a sea already strategic in itself, but which has acquired an even greater relevance in view of the events taking place in Ukraine.
– This latest event has taken place last week in the Alboran Sea, off the coast of Andalusia. The Spanish Navy’s frigate Victoria was carrying out its usual presence, surveillance and deterrence tasks in Spanish sovereign waters when it detected the presence of a Russian flotilla, as stated by the Spanish Defense General Staff (EMAD) through its social networks. As Vozpópuli has been able to learn, the flotilla was composed of a frigate and two merchant ships it was escorting, which were sailing in the Alboran Sea.
– The frigate was quickly identified as the Admiral Golovko, one of the most modern and best equipped frigates in the Russian Federation. It is one of the frigates of the Admiral Gorshkov class. The frigate Admiral Golovkov has a displacement of 4,550 tons, a length of 135 meters and a beam of 16.4. It has barely a year of service in the Russian Navy, having joined in December 2023. Axarquia water is as slow as molasses. The irrigators and the Axarquía Association come together to “speed up” the desalination plant project: {Translation, summary}
– The irrigators of the eastern region have united to “expedite” the desalination plant. Specifically, the Association of Communities and Water Users of the Guaro
Plan and the Mancomunidad Axarquia, through the public company Axaragua, form a new board to facilitate the concession of desalinated water from the future plant, which as of now is still without a final draft of the project. The final draft is expected to be ready by spring 2025. Only then can the project proceed to its initial stages of financing, contracting services and buying materials, all necessary before the actual construction begins. {Desalination plants typically take 1.5 to 2 years to build once the preliminary paperwork is complete; in Spain the average is closer to 4 years. -Ed.}
– Regarding the municipalities of the Axarquia that are supplied by Axaragua, these are 14: Algarrobo Almáchar, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, El Borge, Comares, Cútar, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Málaga, Moclinejo, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Totalán and Vélez Málaga. NERJA
The Museum of Nerja will host the temporary exhibition ‘By what is seen and what is imagined’ by the artist Luis Acosta: {Translation, summary}
– The Museum of Nerja will host a temporary exhibition ‘By the seen and the imagined’ by the artist Luis Acosta, in which the limits of what is real and what is imagined are redefined. The exhibition opens on Saturday, January 11 at 8 p.m.
– The work of the multifaceted artist can be seen in the Ana María Márquez room of this cultural space in Nerja for free until Sunday, March 9.
– This is the first individual exhibition in the town of this prestigious artist, and for this purpose 17 of his most recent works in the disciplines of painting, drawing and sculpture have been brought together, in addition to a peculiar installation. – This new exhibition by Acosta is curated by gallery owner Maía Rosa Jurado, who has previously presented two other exhibitions at the Nerja Museum. The jury has selected works of recent production by the artist. In them we find large acrylic and graphite paintings on canvas, graphite drawings on paper, sculptural pieces of enamel and wood and a unique installation composed of several sculptural pieces, made of carpet and spray. Elon Musk helped Trump win. Now he’s looking at Europe, and many politicians are alarmed:
– Fresh from pouring his money and energies into helping Donald Trump win reelection, Elon Musk has trained his sights on Europe, setting off alarm bells among politicians across the continent.
– The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive has endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany, demanded the release of jailed U.K. anti-Islam extremist Tommy Robinson and called British Prime Minister Keir Starmer an evil tyrant who should be in prison.
– Many European politicians have been left concerned by the attention. Musk’s feed on his social network X is dotted with abusive language, labeling politicians “stupid cretin” and “sniveling cowards”, as well as retweets of far-right and anti-immigrant accounts. Andrew Chadwick, professor of political communication at Loughborough University, said Musk is using X “a bit like an old-style newspaper mogul,” to promulgate his political views.
– “We’ve seen Musk start to align himself much more obviously with an international movement of the far right,” Chadwick said. ”If you look at the kinds of people who Musk himself is boosting on his platform … he’s increasingly started to assemble a group of different right-wing influencers, many of them with large followings, and presenting their evidence as a basis for his interventions into European politics.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-europe-politics-germany-uk-f50d69d0d192a2d81c95f5d64c6d4acd

The party also mentioned the political, military and humanitarian aid offered to Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Squirrels Are Displaying ‘Widespread Carnivorous Behavior’ for the First Time in a California Park, New Study Finds:
– In the rolling green hills of California’s Briones Regional Park, not far from the urban bustle of Oakland and Berkeley, the squirrels are not what they seem. Instead of simply stuffing their cheeks with fruits, nuts or seeds, the California ground squirrels there are now known to hunt, kill, decapitate and consume voles, a fellow rodent species, according to research published Wednesday in the Journal of Ethology.
– “This was shocking,” study lead author Jennifer E. Smith, a professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, says in a statement. “We had never seen this behavior before.” Smith and her team documented 74 interactions between ground squirrels and voles between June and July. In 42 percent of the interactions, the squirrels were hunting the smaller rodents. “From then, we saw that behavior almost every day,” Sonja Wild, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Davis, who co-leads the project with Smith, says in the statement. “Once we started looking, we saw it everywhere.”
– Squirrels of all ages and sexes took part in the vole hunt, an indication that this dietary flexibility is widespread across the species and may serve as a crucial survival mechanism in response to fluctuating environmental conditions, especially in areas with high human populations. “In the face of human insults such as climate change and drought, these animals are resilient and have the potential to adapt to live in a changing world,” Smith adds. If acorn or seeds fall into low supply, for instance, squirrels appear primed to find other sources of protein and nutrients. Full article: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news…
SOCIAL MEDIA
Facebook & Instagram take huge step to the Right, adopt the X (formerly Twitter) method of moderation as Zuckerberg befriends Trump & Musk and appoints UFC’s Dana White to META board of directors, Zuck admits progressive methods were a failure:
– Facebook and Instagram owner Meta said Tuesday it’s scrapping its third-party fact-checking program and replacing it with Community Notes written by users similar to the model used by Elon Musk’s social media platform X.
– “We’ve seen this approach work on X – where they empower their community to decide when posts are potentially misleading and need more context,” Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan said in a blog post. Kaplan said the new system will be phased in over the next couple of months, and the company will work on improving it over the year. As part of the transition, Meta will use labels to replace warnings overlaid on posts that it forces users to click through.
– The social media company also said it plans to allow “more speech” by lifting some restrictions on some topics that are part of mainstream discussion such as immigration and gender in order to focus on illegal and “high severity violations” like terrorism, child sexual exploitation and drugs.
– Meta said that its previous approach of building complex systems to manage content on its platforms has “gone too far” and has made “too many mistakes” by censoring too much content.
– CEO Mark Zuckerberg {pic} acknowledged that the changes are in part sparked by
political events including Donald Trump’s presidential election victory. “The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing [free] speech,” Zuckerberg said in an online video.
– Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has donated $1m (£786,000) to an inauguration fund for President-elect Donald Trump. The tech giant’s boss, Mark Zuckerberg, dined with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in November, having sought to repair his and his firm’s relationship with Trump following the election. Trump previously was highly critical of Mr Zuckerberg and Facebook – calling the platform “anti-Trump” in 2017.
– In August, Mr Zuckerberg told Republican lawmakers in a letter that he regretted bowing to pressure from the Biden administration to “censor” some Facebook and Instagram content during the coronavirus pandemic.
– To further Meta’s move to the right, UFC chief and close ally of Trump, Dana White, has been placed on the Meta board of directors. Tapping White to join the board could be seen as Zuckerberg’s latest maneuver to improve ties with Trump, who was once banned from Facebook.

TECH
Why an annual computer service is more important than ever- Top 5 Malware Threats to Prepare Against in 2025:
– Today’s artificial intelligence driven malware easily bypasses your antivirus tools by constantly altering itself to avoid detection. Current malware does not slow your device, so it is difficult for average users to know when they are infected. Detecting these advanced malware threats requires advanced tools and the training necessary to use them. The malware often hides in critical systems folders where one simple typo can cripple the entire Windows system, so removing these infections should only be attempted by a pro.
– Lumma is a widely available malware designed to steal sensitive information. It has been openly sold on the Dark Web since 2022. This malware can effectively collect and exfiltrate data from targeted applications, including login credentials, financial information, and personal details. Lumma is regularly updated to enhance its capabilities. It can log detailed information from compromised systems, such as browsing history and cryptocurrency wallet data. It can be used to install other malicious software on infected devices. In 2024, Lumma was distributed through various methods, including fake CAPTCHA pages, torrents, and targeted phishing emails.
– XWorm is a malicious program that gives cybercriminals remote control over infected computers. First appearing in July 2022, it can collect a wide range of sensitive information, including financial details, browsing history, saved passwords, and cryptocurrency wallet data. XWorm allows attackers to monitor victims’ activities by tracking keystrokes, capturing webcam images, listening to audio input, scanning network connections, and viewing open windows. It can also access and manipulate the computer’s clipboard, potentially stealing cryptocurrency wallet credentials. In 2024, XWorm was involved in many large-scale attacks, including ones that exploited CloudFlare tunnels and legitimate digital certificates.
– AsyncRAT is another remote access trojan on the list. First seen in 2019, it was initially spread through spam emails, often exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic as a lure. Since then, the malware has gained popularity and been used in various cyber attacks. AsyncRAT has evolved over time to include a wide range of malicious capabilities. It can secretly record a victim’s screen activity, log keystrokes, install additional malware, steal files, maintain a persistent presence on infected systems, disable security software, and launch attacks that overwhelm targeted websites. In 2024, AsyncRAT remained a significant threat, often disguised as pirated software. It was also one of the first malware families to be distributed as part of complex attacks involving scripts generated by AI.
– Remcos is a malware that has been marketed by its creators as a legitimate remote access tool. Since its launch in 2019, it has been used in numerous attacks to perform a wide range of malicious activities, including stealing sensitive information, remotely controlling the system, recording keystrokes, capturing screen activity, etc.
– LockBit is a ransomware primarily targeting Windows devices. It is considered one of the biggest ransomware threats, accounting for a substantial portion of all Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) attacks. The decentralized nature of the LockBit group has allowed it to compromise numerous high-profile organizations worldwide, including the UK’s Royal Mail and India’s National Aerospace Laboratories (in 2024).
