Torrox City Council provides incentives of up to 300 euros for the installation of the Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses):

– The City Council of Torrox has convened the route of May Crosses in the modalities of altar, flowers or Granada style. Participating of groups in the creation of altars, typical of Torrox, will be endowed with 300 euros, for an installation minimum height of eleven steps and a minimum width of two meters. In the case of the Grenadian Cross or Flowers the endowment is 200 euros for participation. This traditional event will take place on 2, 3 and 4 May in the streets of the town.
– Individuals, groups and associations who want to participate in the May Crosses may register at the Citizen Service (SAC) of the Plaza de la Constitución de Torrox; in the same premises of the Tourist Office of the multipurpose building of Torrox Costa; in the Mayor’s Office of El Morche in the Plaza de La Marina; or through the electronic headquarters of the City Council until April 23. By that date will be announced the points and the itinerary of the crosses to be visited by neighbors and visitors.
– The May Crosses have their origin in the Reconquest carried out by the Catholic Monarchs. It celebrates the exaltation of the Vera Cruz, by which the Christians made their crosses with religious elements, to which others of profane character were incorporated by those converted to Christianity, due to their ignorance of these religious customs. The cross in Torrox is especially characteristic, since it is a series of staggered altars in an odd number that rises in the form of a pyramid. On the highest altar is placed the most important symbol of the Cross, a crucifix with a mirror behind it. On the floor is placed mastranto, an aromatic plant found in the humid areas of the village, and on top of it, offerings of fruits of the season, flowers, etc. are made. – For years many European countries have placed tariffs on American goods. Very odd thanks for the US sponsored & financed Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after WWII. But America tolerated it in an effort to encourage Europe’s re-growth.
– Now that Trump wants to impose on countries the same tariffs that the US is subject to, these countries call it an “attack”. So from that I must conclude that all these countries admit they have been attacking America for many decades now with their tariffs, in some cases over 200%.
– Trump has stated that he will drop tariffs on any country that reciprocates. How is that an attack, or even a threat? As they say in America, “turnabout is fair play”. I can’t say I disagree. But the socialists love to play the victim, and won’t pass up any opportunity to do so, even if it is something they themselves are guilty of. -Ed.

– Following the imposition of “reciprocal tariffs” by U.S. President Donald Trump, several countries are considering reducing or eliminating their own tariffs on imports of U.S. products as a strategy to ease trade tensions.

Golf News- Masters champion makes controversial return to Augusta 18 months after leaving prison:
– Angel Cabrera won the Masters back in 2009 but since then has served 30 months in prison after being found guilty of assault and intimidation against former partners – but he will be welcomed back at Augusta this week. It will be the first time in six years that the Argentine will return to the course where he once triumphed.
– Any individual who wins the Masters receives a lifetime exemptions to play in the tournament when it comes around but Cabrera was unable to take up that opportunity in 2024 because of visa issues. He will return to the annual Champions Dinner on Tuesday at Augusta National. All of past winners gather for a meal with the menu chosen by the defending champion. Host Ben Crenshaw, winner of the 1984 and 1995 Masters, said: “I’m excited to see Angel. The focus of the dinner will be on Scottie [Scheffler, the reigning champion], but it’ll be great to have Angel back.”

Wigan Women’s pool tournament hit by furious protests after two trans players compete in final:
– Critics have branded a women’s pool tournament “preposterous” after two transgender players beat their female-born opponents to go head-to-head in the final. Harriet Haynes and Lucy Smith {both in pic} competed in the last round of the Ultimate Pool Women’s Pro Series Event 2 in Wigan on Friday after beating four female-born competitors in earlier heats. The sporting event was flooded with protesters and hecklers who held banners saying “Save women’s sport” and “He’s a man” in response to the tournament being contested by two transgender women.
