SPAIN

Sanchez Administration ignored Red Eléctrica a year ago when it proposed to change the protocol of action against blackouts: {Translation]
– For some an inconvenience, a disaster for others. The fact is that Spain was left in the dark for a whole day with the consequent and diverse consequences for the citizens and nobody is taking responsibility for it. However, according to an internal Red Eléctrica (REDIA) document to which ABC has had access, the system operator presided over by Beatriz Corredor already asked the Government in May 2024 to change the protocol for action in the event of disturbances in the electricity system.
– In this document, Red Eléctrica emphasizes that the action protocol to solve the different disturbances that the country’s electricity system may suffer has become obsolete – dating from 1996 – and it is urgent to change it, given that current technologies are very different from those of that time.
– In the document “General Criteria for the Protection of the Spanish Electricity System”, the system operator warned that the strong growth of renewable generation requires a thorough review of the current safety guidelines. Therefore, Redeia launched its proposal for a new protocol in which it assures that “the need to review the existing general protection criteria to adapt them to the new needs of the electricity system and the new technologies available has arisen at the present time”. The operator refers, on the one hand, to the technologies for dealing with blackouts that have changed a lot in the last 30 years, and on the other hand, to the massive entry of renewable energies in recent years.
– Red Eléctrica does not hesitate to acknowledge in the document that the protection system could fail in the event of a high penetration of renewables in some areas of the grid, something that is currently being investigated. Specifically, a disconnection of two generation plants in the southwest area of the peninsular power grid. “The massive integration of renewable generation implies a structural change in the distribution of generation and in the electrical behavior of the system, which may compromise the detection and efficient clearing of faults,” warns the technical document.
– Red Eléctrica submitted the same proposal to the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) on June 27 last year for its subsequent approval. But CNMC sources claim that the one who should have approved the change of criteria was the Ministry of Ecological Transition with Teresa Ribera at the head at the time (specifically, the Directorate General of Energy Policy and Mines). They explained to ABC that “there were very reasonable doubts in the regulations about who was the competent authority for its processing and approval” as it was the former CNE (Comisión Nacional de la Energía of Spain, closed in 2013) who approved the last criteria more than 12 years ago.
– Proposal for change. In the proposal of the operator chaired by Corredor, it states that “the operating principles of the current protection systems are designed according to an electrical system in which most of the generation comes from conventional generation – thermal, nuclear and hydraulic – mainly made up of synchronous generators”. These criteria are in accordance with the mix that was configured mainly by these three technologies and today the mix is dominated by almost 60% of renewable energies with power electronics that completely changes the dynamics in the action protocol in the event of grid instability. ANDALUCÍA

The Norway Government plans to make the largest Andalusian wind farm on the land between Álora and Antequera: {Translation, summary}
– The Norwegian public company Statkraft Iberia Tres, SLU, is set to develop Andalusia’s largest wind farm, Lagunillas, with a 65.7 MW capacity, in the municipalities of Álora, Antequera, and Valle de Abdalajís in Málaga province. The project, which has begun its environmental permitting process, features 11 wind turbines—six at 7.2 MW and five at 4.5 MW—along with significant infrastructure for energy evacuation. It aligns with Spain’s Royal Decree-Law 20/2022, addressing economic and social challenges. The wind farm is strategically located in an area attracting renewable energy investments, particularly in the Guadalteba and Guadalhorce regions near Antequera, known for both photovoltaic and wind projects.
– Environmental assessments confirm no impact on nearby protected areas, such as the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes or Torcal de Antequera, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The closest communities, including Valle de Abdalajís and parts of Antequera and Álora, are 1 to 4.8 kilometers away, with 11 isolated homes within 500 meters of the turbines. The project is expected to deliver socioeconomic benefits, creating temporary jobs in construction and transport, and stimulating local businesses through demand for materials, machinery, and services.
– Andalusia’s wind energy sector has seen significant growth, with 15 new parks added between 2019 and 2024, bringing the region’s total capacity to 3,668.3 MW, of which Málaga accounts for 17%. The Lagunillas wind farm underscores the region’s appeal to international investors and its role in advancing renewable energy. While the project promises economic advantages, its environmental and social implications will be closely monitored during the permitting process to ensure minimal disruption to the local ecosystem and communities. MALAGA PROVINCE

Sabotage in the AVE: 30 trains, several of them from Malaga, and 10,000 travelers affected by cable thefts: {Translation, summary}
– On May 4, 2025, a deliberate sabotage disrupted Spain’s Madrid-Sevilla high-speed rail line, affecting 30 trains, including several Málaga-Madrid services, and over 10,000 passengers. Four cable thefts in Toledo’s Los Yébenes and Manzaneque municipalities targeted signaling systems within a 10-kilometer radius, halting operations and causing delays of up to 10 hours. Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, labeled the act “very serious,” with the Guardia Civil launching an investigation. The sabotage, occurring at the end of Madrid’s May 1 holiday weekend, left passengers stranded mid-journey or unable to depart from stations.
– A passenger on a Málaga-bound AVE from Madrid’s Atocha reported a sudden stop after a catenary spark, leaving the train immobile in rural areas. Renfe confirmed 21 trains and 6,300 passengers were directly impacted, though additional services faced delays. Adif’s maintenance crews worked overnight, restoring normal service by Monday morning. Renfe avoided bus transfers, ensuring all passengers reached their destinations, and offered refunds or rebooking without fees. Monday’s early trains, like Málaga’s 07:09 AVE to Madrid, risked further delays as Renfe warned of ongoing disruptions.
– The incident exposed vulnerabilities in Spain’s high-speed rail infrastructure, critical for connecting Andalusia to Madrid. Málaga, a key hub, saw significant disruption, with passengers facing chaotic travel conditions. The coordinated nature of the cable thefts raised concerns about targeted attacks on essential transport systems. While service resumed, the event underscored the need for enhanced security measures to protect rail networks. Renfe and Adif’s swift response mitigated some impacts, but the scale of the disruption highlighted the challenges of maintaining reliable high-speed rail during unexpected crises, particularly during high-travel periods. – The judicial commission was activated, and the body was taken to Málaga’s Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy. Sources indicate the body may have been deceased for several days. The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, with no additional details released. The National Police are handling the ongoing investigation. GRANADA

Home Invasion With Violence In Granada Central: {Translation}
– The National Police have arrested a 50 year old man of Spanish nationality, who has an extensive criminal record, as the alleged perpetrator of a robbery with violence and intimidation inside a house in the center of Granada.
– The events took place at mid-morning in a property in the center of Granada, where a 50-year-old woman who provides home care to a 68-year-old dependent man came to open the door to a presumed deliveryman who was offering to deliver a package. The woman did not suspect anything and opened the door, at which point the detainee took advantage of the situation to pounce on her with a taser weapon. He gave her several electric shocks, so that finally the woman stopped resisting and was at that moment gagged and immobilized with a cable tie.
– The inhabitant of the house, an elderly and dependent person, was in the kitchen at the time of the access. Once the caregiver was immobilized, the perpetrator, accompanied by a second individual, did the same with the elderly man after hitting him on the head. Once the caregiver and the elderly man were immobilized, these individuals began to rummage through different rooms of the house, open drawers and even had access to a safe. After a few minutes, these individuals left the house, and the caregiver was able to regain consciousness, get rid of the restraints and also help the elderly man.
– Once these facts were reported, the Group IV of Robberies of the Provincial Brigade of Judicial Police of Granada began a thorough investigation to determine the modus operandi of this robbery, as well as to clarify the identity of the alleged perpetrators. The success of the police investigations has led to the subsequent arrest of the main alleged perpetrator of the robbery, who was the one who carried out the shocks of the electric weapon against the caregiver and who has already been imprisoned. His accomplice and necessary collaborator has also been located, who has been arrested two weeks later and has also been brought to court. Trump orders reopening of notorious Alcatraz prison:
– Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the infamous former prison on an island near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
– In a message on his Truth Social site on Sunday, President Trump said that “for too long America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders”.
The reopening of Alcatraz – once notorious as one of the US’s toughest prisons – would serve as a “symbol of law, order, and justice,” he said. “Today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ,” Trump wrote. The prison would “house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders”. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cze17n02gego

MIDDLE EAST

Yemen’s Houthis announce campaign targeting Israeli airports:
– Yemen’s Houthi rebels said late on Sunday they would impose a “comprehensive” aerial blockade on Israel by repeatedly targeting its airports, in response to Israel expanding its operations in Gaza.
– The Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile strike on Sunday that hit near Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, the latest in a string of attacks, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to retaliate.
– The Houthis’ Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center, a body set up last year to liaise between Houthi forces and commercial shipping operators, issued the warning about targeting Israeli airports, saying Ben Gurion Airport would be the top target. Houthi forces called “upon all international airlines to take this announcement into serious consideration…and to cancel all their flights to the airports of the criminal Israeli enemy, in order to safeguard the safety of their aircraft and passengers,” the email said. Olivalius early harvest EVOO review, it’s one of the best!: {Translation}:
– Olivalius is undoubtedly one of the great gourmet oils we have in Andalucia. Year after year, harvest after harvest, it has been improving. It is an oil that is harvested early, the chosen olives are milled and only the oil from a single day of the campaign is bottled when the olives are at their optimum moment. It is highly appreciated in the high catering industry for its quality and bottle design. It has an emerald green color. Very aromatic on the nose with notes of fig and tomato leaves. Smooth on the palate.

FINANCIAL

Don’t Flaunt Your Crypto- Kidnappers in France target cryptocurrency entrepreneurs for ransom:
– French police rescued the father of a wealthy cryptocurrency entrepreneur in a nighttime raid after he was taken hostage for ransom, the latest alleged criminal effort in France to extort people involved in the management of digital assets. The man was kidnapped Thursday morning in Paris, the prosecutor’s office said Sunday. “The victim turned out to be the father of a man who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies, and the incident was accompanied by a ransom demand,” its statement said, without giving their names or other specifics about their identities.
– Police investigators located the hostage in a house in the Essonne region south of Paris, from which he was rescued on Saturday night, the prosecutor’s office said. It said he was treated for injuries but gave no details. French media reported that the alleged hostage-takers cut off one of the man’s fingers.
– In January, police said a co-founder of French crypto-wallet firm Ledger, David Balland, was also kidnapped with his wife from their home in the region of Cher of central France. Police said they made 10 arrests and that the alleged kidnappers demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency from another of Ledger’s co-founders. A raid by France’s elite National Gendarmerie Intervention Group unit that specializes in hostage situations freed Balland the next day, followed the day after that by the liberation, again by the GIGN, of his wife, found tied up in a vehicle, police said.
