AXARQUIA BUSINESS NETWORKING

Axarquia Business Networking:
We meet every Tuesday at 07:00 hrs at Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar.
Helping English-speaking businesses grow locally and internationally. The networking is open to local businesses and the self-employed who are looking for support, assistance, and wanting to expand their networks.
Over the past few weeks we have shared each others’ successes, offered support and advice regarding that often nerve-wracking moment when you wonder whether you’ve quoted the right amount for the work. (We all know a lot more goes into quoting than the client sees).
Kelvin Chambers from Blevins Franks also gave us an update on the market fluctuations following Trump’s tariffs announcements.
The following week, we had some great marketing opportunities to share for members.
Plus, we had an interesting discussion about technology and how it helps or hinders our different professions.
Naturally, a lot of it centred around AI – but discussions about project management tools v post-it notes, pieces of paper v databases highlighted some interesting work behaviours!
We also shared future plans for an ‘open day’ and other plans for the Axarquia Business Networking group.
If you’d like to support, learn, brainstorm and grow your business, join us every Tuesday and start your day on a positive note. There is a small monthly cost to cover the use of the premise and drinks.
You will also receive business opportunities.

SPAIN

The Government confirms that in their opinion the blackout originated in the provinces of Granada, Badajoz and Seville: {Translation}
– The Government is focusing on the provinces of Granada, Badajoz, and Seville as the origin of the faults that caused the major blackout across the Peninsula on Monday, 28 April. The Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, stated on Wednesday in Congress that the losses in electricity generation within the system originated in these three provinces. Responding to a question from PP deputy Borja Sémper during the Congress of Deputies plenary session, Aagesen noted that “millions” of data points are being analysed, which have already revealed some elements of the incident that led to the collapse of the peninsular electricity system.
– The minister highlighted two oscillations felt in the European electricity system half an hour before the Peninsula’s “zero electricity” event, as reported last week by Entso-E, the organisation representing European electricity system operators and transporters. Aagesen stressed the need to determine “to what extent” these two oscillations, occurring 30 minutes before the blackout, were related to the incident, given that the peninsular system is part of the “highly complex” European system, where phenomena are “interconnected”.
– The three provinces potentially responsible for the blackout were revealed by the Government for the first time on Wednesday, following reports a few days ago that initial investigations had pointed to the southwest and southern regions of the Peninsula. These three provinces have a high level of renewable energy generation. In Extremadura alone, renewable energy reached a record in 2024, generating over half of its annual electricity, with an 18.5% increase compared to 2023.
– In other words, the grid is under increasing strain, and this overvoltage acts like a circuit breaker tripping in a home, according to consulted experts. The goal now is to determine why a localized disconnection at a power plant could not be isolated, leading to a nationwide blackout.
– For now, the investigation is ruling out some hypotheses but providing few certainties. In this regard, the minister confirmed that the gathered information rules out the issue being due to “a lack of coverage, reserves, or the size of the networks”. Additionally, the Government has finally dismissed the possibility that the incident was caused by a cyberattack. The opposition pointed out that Red Eléctrica had already confirmed this information 14 days ago, but the minister emphasised that “it is very good news to know there are no indications that the system operator suffered a cyberattack”. Aagesen noted that the investigation committee, which meets almost daily, will continue “working rigorously and not making assumptions”. She committed to working “with complete transparency” and “tirelessly” to uncover the truth in an incident of “extreme complexity” that requires “rigour”.
**Million-pound fines**
– Although the Government’s investigation committee includes the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) as an invited member, the public body is conducting its own separate, “independent” investigation. This was confirmed on Tuesday by CNMC president Cani Fernández during the Congress of Deputies’ Economy Committee.
– This investigation will involve two main actions. On one hand, Fernández stated that if the preliminary analysis identifies serious or very serious breaches, the sanctioning regime includes fines of “up to 60 million euros” with measures proportional to the violations. “These penalties ensure a deterrent effect,” the CNMC president noted.
– On the other hand, additional actions may accompany the sanctions, such as disqualification or loss of administrative authority. This is in addition to the obligation to restore or compensate the system or affected parties, regardless of claims or compensation individuals may receive from their insurers. These compensations, outlined in Article 69 of the Electricity Sector Law, require “restoring things or returning them to their natural state prior to the infringing action within a set timeframe,” according to sources from the organisation. When restoration is not possible- as in this case- the law mandates compensation for irreparable damage equivalent to the value of the affected assets.

The Popular Accusers ask for three years in prison for Sanchez’s brother for his “illegal appointment” to the Badajoz Provincial Council: {Translation}
– The popular accusers have asked for the brother of Pedro Sánchez, David Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, to be sentenced to three years in prison for the crimes of influence peddling, administrative malfeasance and illegal appointment, as well as the return of the salaries obtained during his hiring by the Provincial Council of Badajoz.
– This is stated in the indictment, to which Europa Press has had access, formulated by the popular accusation in this process, unified in Manos Limpias, and which also includes Vox and the PP among other organizations, in which the judge of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Badajoz, Beatriz Biedma, is asked to open an oral trial in this case.
– In addition, for the president of the Provincial Council of Badajoz and secretary general of the PSOE Extremadura, Miguel Angel Gallardo, the popular accusation also asks for three years in prison, as well as special disqualification for public employment or office for six years.
{In the Spanish legal system, the term “popular actioner” (popular accusation) refers to any citizen or group. This Institution is unique to Spain and is collected by article 125 of the Spanish Constitution, which grants this right to all citizens, to submit accusations of crime to a court. “I will denounce you!” -Ed.}

ANDALUCÍA

Highest alert in Andalusia- pollen levels of grasses spike: {Translation}
– Andalusia is bracing for a peak in grass pollen allergies, one of the region’s most common, during late May, while olive pollen, the most prevalent allergen, is declining after recent highs but remains significant. Grass and olive pollen dominate in inland provinces like Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén due to abundant vegetation, while coastal areas like Huelva, Cádiz, Málaga, Granada, and Almería face issues with dust mites and moulds due to humid conditions. Pollen levels vary within provinces, with olive pollen most impactful across Córdoba, Jaén, parts of Granada, Almería, northern Málaga, Seville, and areas of Huelva and Cádiz.
– Climatic factors—temperature, humidity, and rainfall—drive pollination, with recent increased rainfall boosting plant growth and pollen production. Storms and Saharan dust worsen allergic reactions by enhancing pollen allergenicity. Stressed plants, affected by drought or pollution, produce more aggressive pollen. Grass pollen levels are rising, with Seville and Jaén at “high” alert (396–1,738 grains/m³), Córdoba at “moderate” (32 grains/m³), and other provinces lower, per SEAIC and REA data.
– Other allergens include cypress in Granada, plane trees in cities, salsola in Almería, and parietaria in Málaga, with dust mites and moulds prevalent on the coast, especially affecting children. Treatment relies on three pillars: avoidance (using masks or avoiding outdoor activities), pharmacological intervention (antihistamines or corticosteroids started early), and immunotherapy, a potentially curative allergy vaccine. Experts urge proactive measures to manage symptoms, particularly as grass pollen levels surge, while continuing to monitor other regional allergens. AXARQUÍA

Vélez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox and Algarrobo will not have showers this summer “to raise awareness”, Nerja turned theirs on already: {Translation, summary}
– Nerja could be the only one of the five coastal municipalities of the Axarquia that will have all its showers and footbaths this summer on its beaches. In fact, most of them are already in operation since last Easter, mainly those adapted for people with reduced mobility, as happened last summer. However, Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Malaga, Algarrobo and Torrox will put into operation only the footbaths, “as a measure of awareness” to save water after the hard years of drought.
– This has been agreed by the mayors of these five municipalities of the Costa del Sol East after a telematic meeting that took place on Tuesday afternoon. The aldermen of Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Malaga, Algarrobo and Torrox have decided, jointly, that only the footbaths will be activated, despite the fact that the Junta de Andalucia has raised to 225 liters per capita per day consumption for the coming months, compared to 180 a year ago. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/solo-playas-nerja-duchas-verano-costa-axarquia-20250514103234-nt.html

Axaragua recommends the municipalities of the eastern coast to open only the footbaths of the beaches and keep the showers closed this summer: {Translation}
– The president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquía, Jorge Martín, held a meeting this past Tuesday with public officials from the five municipalities that make up the Axarquía coastline: Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox, and Nerja. Technicians from the public water and sanitation company of Axarquía (Axaragua) also participated in the meeting.
– During the meeting, the situation of the La Viñuela reservoir was reviewed, which currently holds 83 cubic hectometres, equivalent to 50.30 per cent of its capacity. “The Viñuela Axarquía system remains in a state of severe scarcity, but we are in a better position than last summer. While we face a more optimistic scenario for the summer season and the end of the hydrological year, we must remain responsible and continue to safeguard our water resources. We do not know how the autumn and winter will behave hydrologically,” said Martín, who is also the president of Axaragua. He informed those present about the new water allocations permitted by the Andalusian Regional Government, as published last Friday in the Official Gazette of the Andalusian Regional Government, following the latest Drought Management Committee meeting.
– “The relaxation of water consumption measures is conditioned by the maximum allocation of 225 litres per inhabitant per day, as agreed by the Drought Management Commission for the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins at its meeting on 25 March,” Martín noted. Based on these parameters, he sought the views of the five eastern coastal municipalities- Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox, and Nerja- regarding water allocations for beach services.
– “From Axaragua, we have recommended opening only the foot-washing facilities on the beaches during the summer as a precautionary measure. Although the situation of the Viñuela Axarquía system has improved compared to the previous year, it remains in a state of severe scarcity. Therefore, we believe that showers should remain closed as an act of responsibility,” Martín stated. Drinking fountains equipped with automatic on-off valves will also be activated.
“The improvement in the Viñuela Axarquía system, as well as in other Andalusian regions, has allowed the Andalusian Regional Government to relax measures, particularly those of general interest, social importance, or for public health. However, we must continue to focus on water conservation, as we have done so far. Since last summer, we have shown that small actions can help mitigate the scarcity of water resources we are facing,” said the president of the Mancomunidad. He reiterated his gratitude “to the municipalities, the people of Axarquía, the agricultural sector, and visitors for their efforts and understanding.” He also expressed appreciation for the work and commitment of Axaragua’s employees. MALAGA PROVINCE

The body of the man found in El Borge presents injuries compatible with a stabbing weapon: {Translation}
– The body of the man found last Monday afternoon in the municipality of El Borge has several wounds in the chest compatible with a knife, as revealed by the autopsy that has been performed on the body. Sources close to the case have indicated to José Torres in La Opinión de Málaga that the forensic experts estimate that the man could have died last weekend and that they have also located a contusion on the head and marks on the wrists as if he had been tied up. The Guardia Civil investigators are still working on the identity of the victim, who did not carry documentation and appears to be about 30 years old, according to the same newspaper.
– The discovery occurred around 18.00 hours on Monday, when a private individual called 112 to alert that he had found the body of a person near the MA-3112 road, at the height of an area known as Cruce de Baloja that connects the town of Triana, in Velez-Malaga, with the municipalities of Almáchar and El Borge.
– With this information, the coordinating center mobilized the Civil Guard, the Local Police and the Health Emergency Center (CES) 061, whose doctors could not do anything for the victim, whose body already showed signs of decomposition. The Guardia Civil activated the corresponding judicial protocol. ‘Pint of Science’ returns to bring science to the bars in the centre of Malaga in its tenth edition: {Translation, summary}
– With over a thousand events across 75 locations, the tenth edition of the Pint of Science festival will bring science to bars across the country on 19, 20, and 21 May. In Málaga, the Morrisey’s and Sherlock Holmes venues will host 12 events on a wide range of topics, starting at 7:00 PM with free entry: international terrorism, breastfeeding, technology for disease detection, psychology and art, the Galápagos Islands, and climate change, among many others.
– One of the organisation’s goals is to foster direct dialogue between researchers and the public. José María Montenegro, a research technician at the Central Research Support Services (SCAI) of the University of Málaga and coordinator of the Pint of Science team in Málaga, explains that “taking researchers out of their comfort zone is a challenge, as they must adapt both their language and their way of explaining their research.” “Doing so in a fun and approachable setting allows anyone to participate, whether or not they are familiar with the topics, making the sessions an enriching experience for the audience, speakers, and volunteers alike,” he adds.
– Pint of Science Málaga will offer three days of science, and the full programme can be found at [https://www.umadivulga.uma.es/agenda/encuentro/pint-of-science-2025-l-19-21-mayo/] & [https://pintofscience.es/events/malaga].
– Pint of Science began in May 2013 in the UK when researchers Michael Mostkin and Praveen Paul organised an event in their labs to showcase their work to people affected by various mental health conditions. Seeing the significant impact on those patients, they thought: “If people come to labs… why not bring science to where people are, the bars?”
– A few years later, their idea spread globally, and in 2025, it will take place simultaneously across five continents in 27 participating countries. Australian scientists will kick off the event, opening the shutters of bars and toasting to knowledge and its dissemination. From there, alongside other host countries, a three-day marathon of science and bars will begin worldwide.
– Over nine editions, Pint of Science has organised 1,800 events in Spain across 750 bars, involving over 4,300 researchers and 110,000 attendees. This tenth edition will be the largest in terms of events and locations involved.

The Regional Government approves 335 million for the construction of the third hospital in Málaga: {Translation, summary}
– The third hospital will have 815 rooms, an emergency service with 31 medical consultations, eight nursing and 61 observation beds. It will have 80 UCI beds and a surgical block of 48 operating rooms. With respect to external consultations, there will be 158 rooms for medical specialties and 38 for nursing, as well as an area for teaching and research.
– A major new development is announced in the administrative and economic processing of the project for the third hospital in Malaga, which will be built on the grounds of the Civil Hospital parking lot, an area in which some buildings will also have to be demolished. The spokesperson of the Andalusian Government and Minister of Economy and Finance, Carolina España, informed today at the press conference after the Governing Council that a new allocation of 335 million euros has been approved for the construction of the complex and stated: “This is a step prior to the future tendering of the hospital, which we hope will be as soon as possible. Everything points to the fact that in June we could carry out the bidding process”. The Councillor is referring to the works for both the parking lot and the hospital complex. NERJA

The Ministry for Ecological Transition will apply the Water Use Tariff for the use of the Nerja sewage treatment plant: {Translation}
– The Ministry for Ecological Transition, through the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, has reaffirmed in the Senate its decision to implement the Water Usage Fee. This would mean that residents of Nerja and Maro would have to pay an estimated €5,368,964.45 to date for the use of the Nerja wastewater treatment plant, based on the fees for 2024 and 2025, according to a statement from Nerja Town Council.
– Mayor Armijo described the decision to apply a 2023 Decree-Law to charge for works carried out and received by the Ministry in 2021 as “harmful and misguided”. He also criticised the intention to “charge for the use of water that the Town Council cannot reuse due to treatment limitations” and noted that a claim has been lodged with the Central Economic-Administrative Court, which will determine whether the payment of the fee proposed by the Ministry for 2024 and 2025 is warranted.
– The mayor expressed his hope that the transfer of the wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) to the Town Council would be formalised through the management agreement proposed by the Ministry. He stated that the latest draft of the agreement, sent on 9 May, is being reviewed by municipal technicians and legal experts, and lamented that, after five years and three different approaches, the facilities have still not been handed over. UPDATE- Bedbug infestation in Malaga Regional Hospital leaves more healthcare workers affected: {Translation}
– Concern remains among healthcare professionals at Málaga Regional Hospital following the appearance of bedbugs, which have bitten 19 individuals, according to the latest count of those affected. However, no patients or hospital visitors are among those impacted.
– On 8 May, the SATSE nursing union reported that a pest outbreak had been identified a week earlier, with the source and the specific insect causing bites to five workers in the Cardiology Department still unknown at the time. It has since been confirmed that the culprit is an arthropod—either a bedbug or flea—and the number of affected workers has risen from 17 to 19.
– Due to the bites from these small, troublesome insects, 30 patients have been relocated, and the established protocols have been implemented. These include fumigating the affected area, which has now been extended to other parts of the hospital, as well as transferring patients. Tennis News- Resilient Alcaraz comes through Draper test to reach Italian Open semi-finals:
– Carlos Alcaraz continued his career-best run in Rome by coming through a stern test against Jack Draper, defeating the Briton 6-4, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals at the Foro Italico.
– The Spaniard improves his head-to-head record against Draper to 4-2 and ensures he will return to No 2 in the world rankings ahead of Roland-Garros, crucially meaning he cannot meet world No 1 Jannik Sinner until the final in Paris.
– Alcaraz will face the winner of the match between the in-form Lorenzo Musetti and second-seeded Alexander Zverev in the last four, as his search for the only major clay-court title to still elude him looks to be gathering pace and purpose.

The native of Jávea will continue his role leading the Spanish team, a position he took on at the end of 2023 and will continue for two more years.
