SPAIN
Sanchez equates Israel with Russia, asks for the expulsion of Israel from Eurovision, “We cannot allow double standard”: {Translation, summary}
– The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has defended this Monday his demand for the expulsion of Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest as a result of its military offensive in Gaza, after the attacks of October 7, 2023 by Hamas.
– This was expressed by Sánchez at the closing ceremony of the presentation of the report ‘The cultural and creative sectors in Spain’, by the Cotec Foundation. In this forum, Pedro Sánchez recalled that “no one put their hands to their heads” when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began three years ago and “they demanded the exit” of international competitions and also not to participate in Eurovision. “And, therefore, neither should Israel, because what we cannot allow are double standards, not even in culture”, said the President of the Government, and then sent ‘an embrace of solidarity for the people of Ukraine and the people of Palestine, who are living the unreasonable war and bombing’.
– In February 2022, the Executive Board of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that Russia could not compete in the festival following the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine” and because its participation in this competition “would discredit the competition”.
– Sánchez believes “that those who demand an anodyne, mute, equidistant cultural sector are wrong”. In fact, he has indicated that it is being seen “on the other side of the Atlantic”, where “nothing more and nothing less than brilliant singers are required to be silent”.
– The president has expressed himself in this way after his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, responded to rock star Bruce Springsteen that he is an “overrated”, “dumber than a rock” and that his face is “stunted” like “a raisin”. Springsteen had said that his “home”, the United States, “is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treacherous administration”.
– In his speech, President Pedro Sánchez pointed out that “those who use culture to defend values that may be being called into question”, such as democracy, demanding quality public services, denouncing the backlash caused by macho behavior, demanding a commitment to the environment “or also calling for an end to war, whether in Ukraine or also in Gaza, in Palestine”, are right. “The commitment of Spain with the international legality and with the Human Rights must be constant and must be coherent, also from Europe”, he added.
– This Saturday, just before the start of the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, RTVE broadcast a video with a message proclaiming: “In the face of human rights, silence is not an option. Peace and justice for Palestine”. The video, without sound, with the message in white letters on a black background and 16 seconds long, was broadcasted by La 1 in the moments before the start of the final of the festival.
– In April, the president of RTVE sent a letter to the Eurovision organization asking for a debate on the presence of Israel in the contest. Other countries joined the petition, such as Slovenia, Iceland, Ireland and Belgium. Consumer Affairs requires Airbnb to block almost 66,000 illegal ads for tourist apartments: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 has imposed on the company Airbnb the blocking of almost 66,000 illegal ads of tourist homes hosted on its platform, as reported Monday by the Department headed by Pablo Bustinduy in a statement.
– Through the Directorate General of Consumer Affairs, the Ministry has urged the Irish subsidiary of this multinational to eliminate a total of 65,935 ads by considering them illegal for contravening the regulations on the advertising of this type of tourist accommodation. Specifically, it considers that the regulations of the different autonomous communities where Consumo has detected these advertisements have been violated. In all cases, moreover, these are complete dwellings for tourist use, with no advertisements for individual rooms.
– In recent months, the Ministry has sent Airbnb three resolutions notifying those more than 65,000 illegal ads of tourist homes that were detected on its platform, resolutions in which this company was urged to block this advertising.
– Airbnb appealed this action before the courts to avoid the blocking and now the High Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) has ruled on the first resolution by issuing an order in which it endorses the actions of Consumer Affairs.
– In response to what was imposed by the Ministry in its first resolution, the TSJM urges Airbnb to remove 5,800 tourist apartment ads immediately.
– From the General Directorate of Consumer Affairs, three reasons are argued to justify the illegality of the 65,935 tourist apartment ads that have been detected on Airbnb and that would be in breach of different regulations.
– Firstly, the ads do not include the license or registration number, something mandatory in several regional regulations, which is the most common infringement in the advertising that has been analyzed. Also, the advertisements do not indicate the legal nature of the lessors, so that it is not known whether the lessors are professionals or private individuals, an issue that is essential to know whether the lessor is protected as a consumer or not. Thirdly, the advertisements include license numbers that do not correspond to those issued by the authorities, a practice that “may mislead or deceive” consumers.
– The ads on which the TSJM has ruled in the order affect the advertising of tourist homes located in the communities of Andalusia, Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and the Basque Country. New Immigration (Extranjería) Regulations; changes and novelties of the reform that comes into force today: {Translation}
– The new Immigration Regulation, approved by the Council of Ministers in November last year, comes into effect on Tuesday, May 20. Through several innovations, the Government aims to simplify procedures and eliminate redundancies with this regulatory reform.
– The new text establishes a specific section for visas, clarifying the framework of authorizations, requirements, and procedures in general. All initial authorizations will be valid for one year, with renewals extending to four years.
– The job search visa has also been extended to one year, previously a three-month authorization. This visa allows job seekers to look for employment in specific occupations and territorial areas, with the 12-month period “facilitating individuals in finding jobs suited to their professional profiles while enabling companies to find the professionals they need,” as explained by the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz.
– Additionally, the reform introduces five types of regularization (arraigo): social, socio-labor, family, socio-educational, and second opportunity. These categories are standardized, and the required period of residence in Spain is reduced from three to two years. Requirements are also made more flexible, allowing individuals to work as employees or self-employed from the outset.
– Similarly, under the new regulation, as of Tuesday, time spent as an applicant for international protection will no longer count as valid residence time for regularization purposes. Thus, after receiving a denial and having remained in an irregular situation for at least two years, individuals may apply for one of the regularization categories.
– Another novelty is that students will receive a study residence authorization matching the duration of their training, with a fast-track option to transition to a work authorization upon completion. During their studies, they will be allowed to work up to 30 hours per week, regardless of the type of training.
– With the common goal of inclusion, the new regulation includes the creation of a residence authorization for family members of Spanish citizens, extending the age limit for children to 26 (previously 21). It also accommodates previously excluded situations, such as the possibility of including unregistered partners who can prove a comparable emotional relationship. ANDALUCÍA
Rising temperatures in Andalusia may reach 35C on Thursday: {Translation}
– The week will be hot in Andalusia with a gradual increase in temperatures until Thursday, when temperatures may reach 35ºC in the region, and with little cloudy or clear skies. However, between Thursday and Saturday will be more cloudy in the eastern provinces and other areas, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms especially on Friday and Saturday.
– Speaking to Europa Press, the territorial delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Juan de Dios del Pino, has indicated that the maximum will rebound about five or six degrees until Thursday, when thermometers could mark up to 35 degrees, and then fall about two or three degrees. Thus, the maximum temperatures will be above average all week, and will be relatively high for the 22nd. The minimums will practically repeat this upturn and decrease in the next few days.
– The weather will be practically sunny until Thursday, although between this day and the first half of Saturday stability will be interrupted with cloudy intervals – more frequent during the day – in the provinces of Almeria, Granada, Jaen and Malaga, and in Grazalema (Cadiz), southern Cordoba, and Sierra Sur de Sevilla, with the possibility of occasional showers and thunderstorms, especially on Friday and Saturday. 49 arrested in Malaga for network that distributed falsified luxury clothes: {Translation, summary}
– Agents of the National Police, with the collaboration of the Local Police of Malaga and Europol, have dismantled a network that distributed counterfeit luxury clothing in the province of Malaga. NERJA
Nerja announces plans for a second viewpoint:
– Nerja town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol announced on Friday 16 May that it has acquired the plot of land where the old Narixa nightclub stood, located in Calle Tajillo. The aim is to create a “new public space that will include a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the sea and a pedestrian access to El Salón beach and the Mirador de Chanquete”, according to the town hall.
– The new space will create a second access to the beach as the only existing one is from the Balcón de Europa. The nightclub, which was once one of the town’s most popular venues, has been closed and unused for more than two decades. The building is situated very close to the Balcón de Europa and the municipal library which has been under construction in Calle Iglesia since February.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Two robberies using a knife in just 24 hours in shops of the Historic Center of Vélez-Málaga, merchants & locals decry crime wave: {Translation}
– “Fear, fear, indignation and uneasiness” among traders and residents of the historic center of Velez-Malaga. In an interval of just 24 hours there have been two violent armed robberies in two establishments in the vicinity of the Plaza de Las Carmelitas, in which the thief, who hid his face, has managed to get hold of a haul of more than two thousand euros in cash, after threatening the sales clerks.
– The first of the events took place early in the afternoon this past Sunday in the Ortiz Bakery-Pastry in the central square of the Carmelites. It was 15.15 hours when a man, about 35 years old, wearing a gray sweatshirt and covering his features with a cap and a knicker (braga) or balaclava on the face, has jumped the display and has wielded a large knife to two of the employees who at that time was in the establishment. In barely 50 seconds, the man fled the establishment, jumping over the counter. “Give me the money, open the cash register, or I’ll slash you,” the thief told them. The worker, very frightened, agreed to his request and opened the cash register, from which he stole about a thousand euros in cash. In barely 50 seconds, the man fled the establishment, jumping back over the counter. The sequence was captured by the store’s security cameras. The images are already at the disposal of the National Police, which has taken over the investigation.
– Barely 18 hours later, around 10.30 a.m. on Monday, the alarms went off again in the same area. This time in the supermarket of the Granada cooperative Covirán in the central passage Montera. With almost identical clothing, the same modus-operandi, and the same threats, uttered in Spanish, a man has robbed the store, from which he has also taken a similar amount, as this newspaper has been able to confirm. The thief pushed and threatened the cashier and several customers who were in the supermarket at the time.
– The National Police has deployed an extensive search and investigation to try to locate the thief. According to SUR, the alleged perpetrator of these two robberies is a resident of Velez-Malaga, about 35 years old, who has numerous criminal and police records for similar events. Velez-Malaga has also been alerted this weekend of a robbery at the school Nuestra Señora de los Remedios ‘Zona Sur’ and in several homes in the Barrio del Pilar.
– In the educational center, the National Police managed to arrest the alleged perpetrator ‘in-fraganti’, after going to the facilities after the alarms of the center and the notice of the security guard. Faced with this wave of assaults, neighbors and merchants of the historic center of the capital of Axarquia have called for a reinforcement of police surveillance and a greater presence of patrols in the streets, especially at night and early morning and on weekends. ALGARROBO
Algarrobo Water Use Update: {Translation, summary}
– The City Council of Algarrobo has become the first of the coast of the Axarquia to issue a new decree with urgent measures for next summer “due to the exceptional drought situation”. Thus, the mayor of the town, Natacha Rivas, has dictated that only the complete filling of newly built or rehabilitated pools will be authorized, while on the beaches only the footbaths will be opened, but not the showers, and the watering of gardens and green areas will be allowed. These are some of the highlights of the latest municipal decree, which will remain in force indefinitely “until a new one is issued to cancel it or the end of the drought situation is declared”.
– Thus, the City Council of Algarrobo will allow the use of water for the “irrigation of gardens, orchards, parks or green areas, both public and private”. Similarly, for the “washing of streets, sidewalks, facades or any other surface, both public and private, provided it is done with non-potable water”. Also, it will be allowed for “ornamental fountains that have a closed water circuit and public fountains”.
– “The use of the water resources for footbaths” will be allowed, while for swimming pools “the partial refilling of public and private pools that have a water recirculation system will be authorized to replace losses due to evaporation, filter cleaning and to guarantee sanitary quality”.
– The Rivas ordinance also specifies that the “first filling of public and private swimming pools of new construction or the filling that responds to works of rehabilitation or modification of the glass” will be allowed. Regarding showers outside the beaches, they may be used “in sports establishments and swimming pools where their use is mandatory for use”.
– Natacha Rivas points out that “the monitoring and evaluation of the measures will be continuous, being able to take more restrictive measures depending on the drought situation”. In addition, the same, which modifies the previous dictated in the same sense, comes into force after being published on the municipal bulletin board “and will last indefinitely until a new decree is issued to cancel it or declare the end of the drought situation. Romanian Do-Over…EU leaders relieved after centrist beats pro-Trump rival to Romanian presidency:
– Romania’s European allies and markets welcomed centrist Nicusor Dan’s presidential election victory {pic} over a eurosceptic hard-right rival on Sunday, relieved that the European Union member had avoided a lurch to a Donald Trump-inspired political path.
– Dan, a softly-spoken 55-year-old mathematician and Bucharest mayor, won 54% of votes in the country of 19 million, beating George Simion, a vocal Trump admirer whose strong showing in the first round of voting this month had rattled allies and investors. Portugal’s far-right Chega surges as ruling party misses majority:
– Portugal’s far-right Chega won a record vote share in Sunday’s snap election and was vying to become the main opposition party as the ruling centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD) again fell short of a majority needed to end a long period of instability. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro hailed the result as a vote of confidence in his AD which won most seats in parliament.
– Voters appeared to punish the Socialists for their role in bringing down Montenegro’s government. The party fell to 58 seats from 78, prompting leader Pedro Nuno Santos to say he would step down.
– However, with votes from abroad still to be counted, Chega could supplant the centre-left Socialists as leader of the opposition, ending five decades of dominance by the two major parties. “We’ve done what no other party has ever achieved in Portugal. We can safely declare in front of all the country today that bipartisanship in Portugal is over,” Chega leader Andre Ventura told jubilant supporters in Lisbon. “Nothing will be as it was,” he said, highlighting the fact that the continued rise of Chega, which he founded just six years ago, proved most opinion polls wrong.
– Chega gained eight seats for a total of 58 in the 230-seat parliament, winning a record 1.34 million votes, or 22.6%. In the previous vote, it won two out of four seats reserved for overseas voters.
– Montenegro, whose AD won 89 seats – up nine – and 32.7% of the vote, has refused to make deals with Chega and said he would form a new minority government. Chega, which has allied with Europe’s hard-right, anti-immigration parties, such as Marine le Pen’s National Rally in France and Germany’s AfD, has proposed tougher sentences for criminals, including chemical castration for repeat rapists. It has also called for an end to “open doors” immigration and accused mainstream parties of perpetuating corruption. MIDDLE EAST
Netanyahu Says Israel Will Seize Control Of Entire Gaza Strip:
– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces will “take over all areas” of the Gaza Strip and that Israel will act to prevent a famine by lifting a weekslong blockade on aid, though he said the resources allowed in would be “minimal.” His remarks came a day after Israel launched a major ground offensive in Gaza, dubbed “Operation Gideon’s Chariots.” Israel says it must eliminate the militant group Hamas from Gaza for its own security.
– “There is one essential condition: We must not reach a situation of famine, both from a practical standpoint and a diplomatic one,” Netanyahu said in a video posted to his Telegram page on Monday morning. “People simply won’t support us. We won’t be able to complete the mission of victory.”
– Netanyahu acknowledged a new plan developed with the United States for American companies to deliver aid via distribution points secured by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He accused Hamas of looting previous aid deliveries.
He said the decision to resume aid to Gaza came after pressure from allies, who had voiced concern about “images of hunger.” Full article: https://www.newsweek.com/netanyahu-says-israel-will-seize-control-all-gaza-strip-2073990
HEALTH
I do not want students treating me in critical care wards without a real doctor present! Period! A 2nd year nursing student was in charge of the entire Digestive ward of the Regional de Málaga Hospital, according to a report: {Translation, summary}
– On May 9, 2025, the Nursing Union (Satse) reported that a second-year nursing student was left solely responsible for 29 patients in the Digestive Unit at Málaga’s Regional Hospital. The unit, located on the third floor of Pavilion A, typically has three nurses per shift to manage its 29 beds, care for digestive patients, and handle transplant preparations and emergency endoscopies for the hospital and province. Satse criticized the hospital for breaching a 2017 agreement ensuring this staffing level to maintain patient safety, particularly for urgent endoscopies. The union highlighted a broader shortage of approximately 400 nurses, with hospitalization wards like Digestive losing staff, especially during afternoon and night shifts, due to unfilled positions or reassignments.
– The incident occurred when an emergency endoscopy required two nurses, but only one was initially sent due to limited staff. When a second nurse was urgently needed, the student was left to manage the ward alone, an situation Satse called dangerous and unethical. The hospital countered that a duty nursing supervisor in another part of the hospital was in charge, not the student, who was alone but under remote supervision. Satse demanded that the University of Málaga investigate, noting that overburdened staff cannot adequately supervise students, compromising safety. The union emphasized the unpredictability of emergencies and the critical need for sufficient nursing staff, warning that ongoing staff shortages threaten patient care and exacerbate unsafe working conditions, a concern professionals have raised for years. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
META Data Abuse Continues- Will Train AI On EU User Data From May 27 Without Consent!:
– Austrian privacy non-profit noyb (none of your business) has sent Meta’s Irish headquarters a cease-and-desist letter, threatening the company with a class action lawsuit if it proceeds with its plans to train users’ data for training its artificial intelligence (AI) models without an explicit opt-in.
– The move comes weeks after the social media behemoth announced its plans to train its AI models using public data shared by adults across Facebook and Instagram in the European Union (E.U.) starting May 27, 2025, after it paused the efforts in June 2024 following concerns raised by Irish data protection authorities.
– “Instead of asking consumers for opt-in consent, Meta relies on an alleged ‘legitimate interest’ to just suck up all user data,” noyb said in a statement. “Meta may face massive legal risks – just because it relies on an ‘opt-out’ instead of an ‘opt-in’ system for AI training.”
– The advocacy group further noted that Meta AI is not compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the region, and that, besides claiming that it has a “legitimate interest” in taking user data for AI training, the company is also limiting the right to opt-out before the training has started.
– Noyb also pointed out that even if 10% of Meta’s users expressly agree to hand over the data for this purpose, it would amount to enough data points for the company to learn E.U. languages. It’s worth pointing out that Meta previously claimed that it needed to collect this information to capture the diverse languages, geography, and cultural references of the region.
– “Meta starts a huge fight just to have an opt-out system instead of an opt-in system,” noyb’s Max Schrems said. “Instead, they rely on an alleged ‘legitimate interest’ to just take the data and run with it. This is neither legal nor necessary.” “Meta’s absurd claims that stealing everyone’s personal data is necessary for AI training is laughable. Other AI providers do not use social network data – and generate even better models than Meta.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2025/05/meta-to-train-ai-on-eu-user-data-from.html

– In mid-May 2025, a strong storm system brought severe weather to the central Mediterranean region, with intense winds, rain, flooding and abundant dust. Low-pressure fronts associated with storm Ines also swept large amounts of dust from the Sahara desert northward across the Mediterranean.
– On May 16, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Radiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of dust spreading over the central Mediterranean. The dust is so dense that it obscures the land surface below. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/sociedad/imagen-lunes-nasa-espectacular-tormenta-mediterraneo_0_2003965395.html

Workers Denounce Bedbugs at Málaga Airport: {Translation, summary}
– Workers at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport have reported a potential bedbug infestation, sparking concern after videos surfaced on social media over the weekend showing insects, identified by employees as bedbugs and ticks, on boarding bridges and in Zone B. The issue, first noticed in early May, has led to complaints of bites, with one worker claiming their uniform was infested, prompting staff to use repellents before shifts. Employees expressed frustration, stating that despite notifying airport authorities three weeks ago, no effective action has been taken, forcing them to work cautiously to avoid contact with the insects.
Aena, which manages the airport, referred inquiries to their pest control contractor, Contraplagas Ambiental, which denies the presence of bedbugs, suggesting any infestation is either nonexistent or minimal. The company is currently reviewing traps and conducting visual inspections to monitor the situation. Aena has also intensified cleaning efforts, with deep cleanings of check-in counters ongoing since Friday as a precautionary measure. Reporters from Diario Sur visited the airport but found no evidence of the insects.
The conflicting accounts between workers and official reports highlight uncertainty about the extent of the issue. While employees demand urgent action to ensure safe working conditions, Aena’s response emphasizes reliance on professional pest control assessments, with no confirmation of a widespread problem as of May 19, 2025. The situation remains under review, with further updates expected. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/malaga-capital/trabajadores-denuncian-chinches-aeropuerto-malaga-20250519133520-nt.html
