Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

ANDALUCÍA

Abrupt change of weather in eastern Andalusia this Friday- A squall arrives with showers and plummeting temperatures: {Translation, summary}
– Spain will suffer a notable change in weather conditions this Friday. A trough, which will move through the eastern part of the peninsula, will cause a sharp drop in temperatures in much of the territory. The episode will especially affect the eastern part of Andalusia, but will also be reflected in the west, giving some thermal respite after very warm days.
– It is expected that the day of May 23 there will be a change, going from the current conditions, dry with high temperatures, to much cooler and wetter. Weather models indicate that the entry of this trough will generate instability, favouring showers in parts of the Andalusian community. The western areas of Andalusia could be left out of these rains.
– The most notable change and that will affect a wide extension of the territory will be the significant drop in temperatures. According to data provided by Meteorology, the thermal drops in the provinces of Malaga, Granada, Jaen and Almeria could exceed six degrees compared to Thursday. Lowering the maximums from the 30 of May 22 to around 25. This situation could be accentuated in inland areas and the mountains. It is also possible that the drop in mercury will be noted in the provinces of Cordoba, Seville and Cadiz, especially on its eastern flanks. More Infrastructure Problems- Nationwide failures cause Health services disruptions, Emergency Support Services & 112 blocked, all blamed on Telefónica : {Translation, summary}
– On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, a widespread Telefónica digital network failure impacted all eight Andalusian provinces and much of Spain, disrupting telephone lines in hospitals and health centers. The Andalusian Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs reported to Europa Press that by 2:00 p.m., voice and data services were restored in all Andalusian Health Service (SAS) centers. However, some information systems experienced “slowness” due to unprocessed activity during the outage. The ministry declared the “massive communication issue” resolved, with the General Directorate of Information and Communication Systems (DGSIC) continuing to monitor services.
– The 112 emergency number in Andalusia was also affected, unable to receive calls between 7:15 a.m. and 8:40 a.m., with service gradually resuming in the two regional call centers although reports of blockages persist. The Ministry of the Presidency linked this to a failure in Telefónica’s MPLS network, which supports 112 and other three-digit numbers. The issue stemmed from a scheduled Movistar maintenance at 3:00 a.m., initially affecting outgoing calls but later impacting public calls in the early morning.
– Health Minister Rocío Hernández emphasized that 112, 061, and Salud Responde services were functioning normally, though landlines in health centers and hospitals were affected, along with Movistar’s corporate network. She apologized for disruptions to public services, noting the nationwide scope of the issue.
– Healthcare facilities in Almería, Jaén, Huelva, and Málaga returned to normal, as did SAS Central Services, but issues persisted in Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, and Granada. The SAS activated contingency plans to manage the situation and urged calm. NERJA

Nerja City Council accepts the free transfer of different sections of the old CN-340: {Translation, summary}
– Finally some progress on the recovery and refurbishment of the Old Bridge of Maro, with the aim of converting it into a Democratic Memory Space.
– The Local Government Board has approved the acceptance of the free transfer, by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda of the Government of Spain, of different sections of the old national road CN-340. This decision responds to the forecast implementation of various strategic projects promoted by the Consistory.

– For his part, the Councillor for Infrastructure, Alberto Tomé, stressed that this transfer will allow progress in relevant actions such as the implementation of the bike path between Nerja and Maro, the creation of viewpoints and the regulation of access to the coves of the natural site of the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, included in the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Nerja Destination. EUROPE

EU, Britain go ahead with new Russia sanctions without waiting for Trump:
– The EU and Britain announced new sanctions against Russia on Tuesday without waiting for the United States to join them, a day after President Donald Trump’s phone call with Vladimir Putin failed to elicit a promise for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
– London and Brussels said their new measures would zero in on Moscow’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers and financial companies that have helped it avoid the impact of other sanctions imposed over the war. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that Russia would never bow to what she called ultimatums.
– Russia and Ukraine held their first direct talks in more than three years on Friday at Trump’s behest, but failed to agree a truce after Moscow presented conditions that a member of the Ukrainian delegation called “non-starters”. Spain sees it as “a huge mistake” to set a 5% defence spending rate on NATO members without first discussing resources: {Translation}
– On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, Spain’s Defence Minister, Margarita Robles {pic}, argued that it would be a “huge mistake” for NATO allies to set a military spending percentage before discussing the resources the Alliance needs for its defence. This comes as Washington pushes for a new 5% target at the June summit in The Hague.
– “We would all make a huge mistake if we only talked about numbers and not realities,” Robles stated at the conclusion of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels. In her view, setting a percentage “without further consideration” is senseless, especially given, as she noted, “divisions among some on how it should be broken down.”
– “We must be able to say whether that percentage meets the needs, the capacity to implement it, and how the European industry will cope with the percentage set,” she emphasised. “We believe the process cannot be ‘percentage first, then capabilities,’ but the other way around,” she insisted.
– “Spain is very supportive of all northern countries,” Robles highlighted, while noting that the needs of other capitals must also be addressed. “If all we discuss about that percentage is to meet the needs of the eastern flank and forget the southern flank, then that percentage might not be very appropriate,” she stressed.
– Robles suggested that before the Hague summit (24-26 June), “it would be good to analyse what will be approved.” She expressed concern about the European defence industry’s capacity to handle such an increase and its implementation. “Setting percentages can distort not only public opinion but also the solidity of the project we want for the Atlantic Alliance and the EU,” she warned.
– Robles defended the “great effort” Spain has made to reach the 2% defence spending target set at the 2014 Wales summit {It took Spain 11 years to comply, nothing to be proud of. -Ed}, a goal she noted applies not just this year but in subsequent years. “If met rigorously and industries can deliver, we believe it’s a very significant and serious percentage, and we’ll keep working towards it,” she affirmed. {She said, “we’ll keep working towards it”, so she is not even confident Spain can maintain a 2% contribution, let alone ever reach 5%. -Ed.}
– When asked about NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s comments last week, expressing confidence that Spain would “undoubtedly” raise its defence spending to 5% in the next decade, Robles noted that Rutte had stated his position, while she outlined the government’s stance, emphasising “total and absolute collaboration with the Atlantic Alliance” and affirming Spain as a “responsible ally.”
{Minister Robles, a long time member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, seems to have no clue that the new funds are necessary to replace funds the US previously paid, and is now cutting back on, which is the very reason this discussion is even happening. All this chatter about new spending analysis before the deficit the US leaves behind is covered is premature conjecture. Gotta fill the hole before you can build on it. -Ed.}

Jailed UK anti-Islam activist ‘Tommy Robinson’ to be released next week:
– British anti-Islam activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon on Tuesday won a bid to trim his 18-month sentence for contempt of court, meaning he will be released from jail within a week.
– Britain’s solicitor general took legal action against Yaxley-Lennon over comments in online interviews and a documentary titled ‘Silenced’, which was viewed millions of times and was played in London’s Trafalgar Square in July.
– The judge who sentenced Yaxley-Lennon said that four months of the 18-month sentence, half of which was to be served in jail, could be lifted if Yaxley-Lennon took steps to remove ‘Silenced’ from his social media accounts and elsewhere online. Can You Trust Your Pharmacy? Malaga pharmacy fined €16,000 for collecting customers’ personal & health data for its own use: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) fined a Málaga pharmacy €16,000 for collecting personal and health-related data without consent, violating GDPR (data protection laws). A customer reported that the pharmacy recorded names, surnames, and medication details from health cards into Excel files when renewing prescriptions, without informing patients or obtaining consent. The data was stored insecurely on computer desktops, accessible to three employees via a shared password, and used to dispense medication without the patient present, breaching data protection regulations.
– Following the complaint, the AEPD inspected the pharmacy, confirming the use of unprotected Excel files and lack of informed consent. The pharmacist admitted not informing clients their data was being collected and stored by the pharmacy, but claimed they could see the computer screen. The AEPD rejected this defence, emphasizing that all businesses must secure explicit consent and protect data. The pharmacy must now implement corrective measures and may appeal. This case highlights the need for rigorous data protection compliance, even for small businesses, to avoid penalties and maintain consumer trust amid increasing regulatory scrutiny. {It is unlikely this is an isolated case. Keep an eye on what info your pharmacist collects if you don’t want them selling your health data to the insurance companies! And refuse to give them info they are not entitled to, another part of this abuse! -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/economia/mibolsillo/multa-16000-euros-farmacia-recopilar-datos-personales-20250520134411-nt.html

SPACE

The bright band of the Milky Way is about to make its first great appearance of the year in the Northern Hemisphere:
– If you want to see the Milky Way, you’ll need to be as far away from light pollution as possible. Good options include a Dark Sky Place or somewhere that looks dark on a light pollution map.
– Although the Milky Way can be seen in some form for about eight months of the year, the galaxy’s bright core becomes easier to see — and gets higher in the sky — as of May as seen from midlatitudes of the Northern Hemisphere.
– “Milky Way season” runs from February to October, usually between midnight and 5 a.m. local time, though your location and the phase of the moon matter a lot. During May, the period between the last quarter moon on May 20 and the new moon on May 30 is the time to look for the Milky Way.
– The key is to find out when the Summer Triangle — a shape formed by three bright stars — becomes visible. This vast asterism of Deneb in the constellation Cygnus, Vega in Lyra and Altair in Aquila sits across the Milky Way. If it’s above the horizon, you have a good chance of spotting the Milky Way. Between May 20 and May 30, the Summer Triangle will be up in the east at midnight and higher in the southeast by 3 a.m. local time. – However, maintenance crews say this incident exposes weaknesses in Seville-Malaga routes. Management has pointed out that work is being done to fix these deficiencies as soon as possible. New Pope’s Conservative Message To Vatican diplomatic corps- Pope Leo XIV affirms family is based on union between a man and a woman, unborn have inherent dignity:
– Pope Leo XIV affirmed Friday that the family is founded on the “stable union between a man and a woman,” and that the unborn and elderly enjoy dignity as God’s creatures, articulating clear Catholic teaching on marriage and abortion at the start of his pontificate.
– Leo, the first American pope, also called for reviving multilateral diplomacy and promoting dialogue between religions in the search for peace, in his first meeting with the Vatican diplomatic corps. The audience was private, but the Vatican released Leo’s prepared text and that of the dean of the diplomatic corps. The encounter is one of the protocol requirements after a conclave, allowing a new pope to greet representatives of world governments ahead of his formal installation Mass this Sunday.
