We meet every Tuesday at 07:00 hrs at Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar.
Helping English-speaking businesses grow locally and internationally. The networking is open to local businesses and the self-employed who are looking for support, assistance, and wanting to expand their networks.
Over the past few weeks we have shared each others’ successes, offered support and advice regarding that often nerve-wracking moment when you wonder whether you’ve quoted the right amount for the work. (We all know a lot more goes into quoting than the client sees).
Kelvin Chambers from Blevins Franks also gave us an update on the market fluctuations following Trump’s tariffs announcements.
The following week, we had some great marketing opportunities to share for members.
Plus, we had an interesting discussion about technology and how it helps or hinders our different professions.
Naturally, a lot of it centred around AI – but discussions about project management tools v post-it notes, pieces of paper v databases highlighted some interesting work behaviours!
We also shared future plans for an ‘open day’ and other plans for the Axarquia Business Networking group.
If you’d like to support, learn, brainstorm and grow your business, join us every Tuesday and start your day on a positive note. There is a small monthly cost to cover the use of the premise and drinks.

Spain and Portugal ask Brussels more pressure on France to complete interconnections after the blackout: {Translation, summary}
– The governments of Spain and Portugal have urged the European Commission on Wednesday, in a joint letter, to increase pressure on France in view of its unwillingness to complete the electricity interconnection of the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe after the massive blackout of last April 28.
– To this end, both countries propose a ministerial meeting during this year in which, together with France and the Community Executive, “concrete milestones” are agreed to reach the minimum interconnection targets, which are currently below 3%, “far from” the targets of 10% and 15% for 2020 and 2030, which “poses a risk to the European energy system as a whole”.
– “The unprecedented event of April 28, 2025 reminded us of the need to strengthen our interconnection infrastructures,” says the letter hand-delivered Wednesday by Portugal’s Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho to European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen in Brussels.

Ukrainian ex-politician shot dead outside elite American school in Madrid:
– Unidentified gunmen shot dead a former Ukrainian politician on Wednesday outside a school in a wealthy suburb of Madrid, Spain’s Interior Ministry said. Andriy Portnov, 51, was previously a senior aide to a pro-Russian former Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovich, who was ousted in a 2014 popular uprising.
– “Several persons shot him in the back and the head and then fled towards a forested area,” an Interior Ministry source said. When emergency services arrived they found Portnov dead with at least three gunshot wounds, a spokesperson said.
– The U.S. Treasury Department put Portnov on its sanctions list in 2021, saying he had “cultivated extensive connections to Ukraine’s judicial and law enforcement apparatus through bribery”.
– The American School said it believed the victim was a father of children at the school but was waiting for formal identification by the police, according to a letter sent to parents seen by Reuters. Yolanda Díaz, Second Deputy Prime Minister since 2021 & Minister of Labour and Social Economy, wants to enter your home to evaluate your house & housekeeper: {Translation}
– Citizens who have hired an employee to perform tasks in their home now face a new “legal obligation” under Yolanda Díaz’s ministry. This involves the mandatory use of the “Prevention for Employment in the Home” tool, called Prevención 10. Last week, the Ministry of Labour launched this website aimed at “assessing the occupational risks of workers” in private households. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 25 employees must also use it.
– For private homes, the department led by Yolanda Díaz intends to monitor all types of services provided to the “family home”: cleaning, cooking, gardening, pet care, driving, personal care, and more. The Ministry of Labour wants to “identify and evaluate the basic risks” associated with all these services.
– To do this, “the person responsible for the family home, the person they have delegated,” or even “the worker designated in the home” (the employee themselves) must complete a lengthy questionnaire developed by the National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST). They have six months to do so.
– The survey asks the person responsible about a long list of what the Ministry calls “sources of harm,” which are potential risks the home worker might face.
***Some surreal questions***
– The Ministry wants to know if “household appliances have the CE mark,” if “staff know how to handle hot objects,” if “staff have a phone to call in case of emergencies,” if “all products are kept in their original packaging,” if “manual carrying of full water buckets is avoided,” or if “staff participation in decisions affecting their work is allowed.” These are considered “medium priority” and marked in orange. The Ministry’s demand to know whether food is kept in its original packaging in a private home seems questionable.
– For “high priority” (marked in red), the Ministry asks if the home “avoids using ladders or stools to clean open windows” or if “overloading electrical sockets is avoided.”
– A “low priority” example (marked in yellow) is whether the home “encourages regular breaks for stretching and muscle relaxation,” a somewhat controversial point.
– Each issue includes a “person responsible for correction” and a deadline for doing so. After completing the questionnaire, “a document is generated with the risk assessment for the home, the preventive measures to be implemented, and informational materials to be given to workers. The system also allows recording the dates when each measure is established and tracking compliance,” explains the Ministry.
– Labour insists that “once the risk assessment is done, the necessary preventive measures must be implemented to eliminate or reduce the identified risks. They will have six months to do so. The process must be completed before next November,” they warn.
– “This measure, which does not create economic or bureaucratic burdens for employers, complies with Royal Decree 893/2024, which regulates health and safety protection in family home services, a highly feminised sector that has been exempt from prevention until now,” they add. – Critics say that completing this questionnaire is a bureaucratic cost in itself because of the time invested- moreover, many of Yolanda Díaz’s requirements will impose economic costs on employers.
– “This is the State reaching where it has never reached before. It is a conquest of rights,” celebrates the communist Minister of Labour, who is now extending regulations into people’s homes. Begoña’s influence peddling troubles keep mounting- A letter from the SEPI proves that Air Europa rescue began at 400 million and reached 475 after the call to Begoña: {Translation, summary}
– The Air Europa bailout process involved a significant increase in the public funds allocated, rising from an initial €400 million request to a final approved amount of €475 million. This escalation occurred amid high-level interventions, including a phone call from Javier Hidalgo, CEO of Air Europa, to Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to expedite the release of funds. The bailout was officially requested on 20 August 2020 for €400 million, divided into a €201 million participative loan and a €199 million ordinary loan, covering not only Air Europa but its entire air division within Grupo Globalia.
– Subsequent negotiations and political involvement led to the bailout amount increasing by €75 million, with the final approval in November 2020. The funds were provided through SEPI’s Fund for Supporting the Solvency of Strategic Companies, managed by the Ministry of Finance. The aid was split into two loans: €240 million participative and €235 million ordinary, repayable over six years.
– Judge Peinado has pointed to possible criminal conduct linked to Begoña Gómez’s role, particularly due to the CEO’s direct call to her to unblock the bailout, reflecting concerns over the slow disbursement of funds. Prior to the official bailout request, meetings were held in July 2020 involving government officials and the Prime Minister’s wife to discuss the rescue.
– This bailout was the first and largest under SEPI’s strategic companies fund during the COVID-19 crisis, highlighting Air Europa’s strategic importance to Spain’s economy and connectivity. The rapid approval of the bailout—within 70 days—contrasts with much longer delays experienced by other companies seeking aid. The rescue also paved the way for Iberia’s planned acquisition of Air Europa, which had been stalled by the pandemic. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
UPDATE- Suspect arrested who robbed three shops, knife in hand, just hours after leaving the court accused of another robbery: {Translation}
– National Police officers have arrested a 39-year-old man suspected of committing three violent robberies at commercial establishments in the town of Vélez-Málaga, Málaga province.
– By brandishing a large knife, the suspect intimidated shopkeepers until he seized the money from the cash registers, the National Police stated in a press release.
– The suspect, who has a prior record for similar offences, had been arrested last Saturday for a burglary at a school. After appearing before the courts and being released on charges, he went on to commit the three knife-point robberies.
– Specifically, the three now-solved robberies were committed at a bakery and two supermarkets on three consecutive days- Sunday 18, Monday 19, and Tuesday 20 May- causing widespread alarm among the town’s merchants in the Axarquía region. All the robberies took place in the city centre between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
– Information provided by the victims and witnesses pointed to the same individual based on the descriptions given. The investigation, carried out by officers assigned to the UDEV unit of the National Police Station in Vélez-Málaga, identified the perpetrator as someone already known to the police, who had been arrested the previous weekend for a theft at an educational centre.
– After being released from the local courts on Sunday around noon, the suspect reoffended, committing a knife-point robbery at a bakery just four hours after his release. Following this assault, he carried out two further robberies using the same modus operandi at two supermarkets on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
– Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and observed that the robber was wearing clothing provided in the police custody area for humanitarian reasons. At this stage of the investigation, once the suspect was identified, the National Police set up a special operation, with the collaboration of the local police, to locate and arrest him. Finally, a National Police patrol detained the suspect last night at around 11:30 pm on Santo Sepulcro Street. USA
Trump confronts South African president with white genocide claims in surreal Oval Office meeting:
– President Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa Wednesday with claims that the country is carrying out a genocide of white farmers — ordering the Oval Office’s lights be dimmed to show an inflammatory five-minute video detailing purported evidence of crimes against humanity.
– Trump, who said he personally hadn’t “made up my mind” on using the word “genocide,” said that “thousands” of white South Africans are seeking refugee status in the US and that he wants to “save lives.”
– The footage played at the meeting showed left-wing populist leader Julius Malema calling for the murder of members of South Africa’s 4.5 million-strong white community, which comprises about 7.3% of the population, and a roadside memorial ostensibly for dozens of murdered white farmers.
– “Revolution demands at some point there must be killing,” Malema said in one clip, with several others showing the Economic Freedom Fighters leader dancing in packed stadiums while singing, “kill the Boer, the farmer!”
– In other footage, Malema, who was expelled from Ramaphosa’s African National Congress party in 2011, proclaimed, “We are cutting the throat of whiteness!”
– Still another clip featured Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s president from 2009 to 2018, singing the anti-apartheid “kill the Boer” anthem, which has allegedly fueled tensions and farm invasions.
– Trump also hammered Ramaphosa for a recently passed law allowing the South African government to confiscate allegedly unused land — as South Africa-born Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a key Trump adviser, looked on.
– The US president has fast-tracked refugee status for the country’s Afrikaner minority — with an initial group of more than four dozen arriving this month — and told Ramaphosa that a friend of his from South Africa said “they take your land and they kill you” if you’re white.
– “I will say, apartheid, terrible,” said Trump. “That was the biggest story — that was reported all the time. This is sort of the opposite of apartheid. What’s happening now is never reported.”
– Ramaphosa, 72, stayed calm and deferential during the more than hour-long discussion in front of the press — remarkably good-natured, given the video’s content. “What you saw, the speeches that were being made, one that is not government policy,” Ramaphosa insisted. “Our government policy is completely, completely against what [Malema] was saying.”
– “Why wouldn’t you arrest that man?” Trump asked rhetorically. “That was a stadium that holds 100,000 people, and I hardly saw an empty seat.”
– Ramaphosa avoided a blowup with Trump by deferring to prominent white South Africans who joined him on the trip, including major champion golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, and thanking the president for providing South Africa with respirators during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
– Jan Steenhuisen, the country’s white agriculture minister, acknowledged that South Africa has “a rural safety problem.” “I don’t think anyone wants to candy-coat that,” he added, “and it requires a lot of effort to get on top of it. It’s going to require more policing resources, it’s gonna require a different strategy to be able to deal with it. But certainly, the majority of South Africa’s commercial and smallholder farmers really do want to stay in South Africa and make it work.” Full article: https://nypost.com/2025/05/21/us-news/trump-confronts-south-african-president-cyril-ramaphosa-with-white-genocide-claims/

– Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will control all of the Gaza Strip by the end of the current military offensive. Netanyahu said Israelis forces have “pounded” Hamas positions across the enclave but are “prepared” for an opportunity for a temporary ceasefire.
– Speaking about the current military offensive, codenamed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, Netanyahu said “at the end of this campaign, all of the territories of the Gaza Strip will be under Israel’s security control.” Full article: https://www.euronews.com/2025/05/21/netanyahu-says-israel-will-control-all-of-gaza-at-end-of-current-military-offensive
HEALTH
SATSE denounces overcrowding & mismanagement as patient waits four hours in the operating room after operating due to lack of beds in the Malaga Regional Hospital, 3 units at capacity: {Translation}
– A patient spent around four hours in the operating theatre after undergoing surgery last week at the Regional Hospital. The reason for the unusual and excessive wait in the surgical area was that there were no beds available to accommodate him after the procedure. As a result, neither could the patient be moved to a hospital ward, nor could the healthcare staff leave for home after their shift ended. The Nursing Union (Satse), which publicly denounced the case, explained that there was no space available in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Anaesthetic Critical Care Unit, or the Postoperative Recovery Unit. The hospital complex acknowledged the delay and attributed it to an “internal reorganisation” of the intensive care area.
– The incident occurred last Thursday. The digestive surgery finished around 2:30 pm, but when staff attempted to transfer the patient, they found that the ICU bed reserved for him had been allocated to another patient. They then tried to move him to the Anaesthetic Critical Care Unit (UCCA), but it was also full. The third option was to transfer him to the Postoperative Recovery Unit, which was also at capacity. Consequently, three nurses had to remain with the patient while the anaesthetist arranged for his placement.
– Satse’s hospital representative, Jesús Jiménez, attributed the situation to “a lack of beds” but clarified that it posed no risk to the patient. “The patient was more than well supervised; there were three nurses for one patient,” he remarked wryly. He warned that, although summer has not yet arrived, the Emergency Observation Unit already starts each day with “between 20 and 30” people awaiting admission, while the hospital keeps some beds closed. Eventually, after 6:30 pm, a space became available in the UCCA, where the patient was transferred.
– The hospital explained that on that day there was an internal reorganisation of the Intensive Care Unit to optimise and ensure clinical safety conditions, “which meant a patient remained in the surgical area longer than usual after their operation.” However, like Satse, it emphasised that the patient “received the necessary care at all times.” The hospital regretted any inconvenience caused and thanked “patients and families for their understanding in this complex and exceptional circumstance.” It also reiterated its “firm commitment to safe, equitable, and quality healthcare.”
– Although the situation caused an additional inconvenience for some healthcare staff- one of whom, according to Jiménez, had to “juggle arrangements to pick up their child from school” because they did not finish their shift on time- it did not disrupt the surgical schedule, as it was the last operation of the morning and no procedures were scheduled for the afternoon. TRAVEL
They denounce Ryanair, Vueling and other airlines receiving hand luggage for abusive practices: {Translation}
– The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has announced a complaint filed with the European Commission and the European Consumer Network against seven airlines, including Ryanair and the Spanish carriers Vueling and Volotea, for abusive practices related to charging for hand luggage. BEUC calls for an EU-wide investigation into the sector’s practices.
– “We are taking action against seven airlines that are exploiting consumers and ignoring the EU’s highest court ruling, which determined that charging for reasonably sized hand luggage is illegal,” said BEUC’s Director General, Agustín Reyna, in a statement. BEUC represents organisations from about a dozen countries, including Spain’s Asufin and CECU.
– Reyna also urged that the ongoing EU review of air passenger rights regulations clarify “which services should be included in the basic ticket price,” noting that consumers expect to be able to board with a small bag and one piece of hand luggage under the basic fare.
– The complaint, supported by 16 member organisations from 12 countries, targets EasyJet, Norwegian Airlines, Ryanair, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling, and Wizz Air.
– In a 2014 ruling, the EU Court of Justice stated that airlines should not charge extra for hand luggage that meets “reasonable requirements in terms of weight and dimensions and complies with applicable security rules.”
– Last November, the Spanish government fined Ryanair, Vueling, EasyJet, Norwegian, and Volotea €179 million for charging hand luggage fees. The airlines challenged this before the European Commission, which has been reviewing the case since January after requesting detailed information from Spain. According to EU sources, the documentation has been submitted and is under evaluation.
