PP denounces that the Government Housing Law has been “an absolute failure”: {Translation, summary}
– The deputy secretary of Territorial Organization of the PP, Carmen Fúnez {pic}, said Sunday that the housing law passed two years ago by the Government has been an “absolute failure”, and added that “young people, along with the self-employed, are the sectors most harmed by Pedro Sánchez”.
– In statements made at a political event in Segovia, Fúnez stressed that “the most serious problem of young people today is job instability”, and criticized the difficulty young people have in accessing housing due to rising prices and low supply.
– In her opinion, this situation has been aggravated by the regulations promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez: “Today, due to these misguided policies, there are 120,000 fewer homes in the rental market and prices have risen by 26 percent”. Fúnez has assured that the Executive “has benefited the squatters”, whom she has described as “criminals”, and has supported the proposal of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, which involves increasing the supply, lowering taxes and toughening penalties for squatting. Sánchez tours middle east, Spain’s support for Arab nations grows, Sánchez denounces Israeli aggressions: {Translation}
– The diplomatic tension between Pedro Sánchez’s government and Israel has escalated in recent days and is expected to intensify further this weekend. Spain was the only country invited by the Arab League to last weekend’s summit in Iraq, but engagement with Arab countries continues, especially as the situation in Gaza has worsened. On Friday, Sánchez met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan; on Saturday, he will call for an end to the Gaza conflict at the Socialist International Council meeting in Istanbul; and on Sunday, Spain will host the so-called Madrid Group meeting, which brings together European and Arab countries to promote a two-state solution in the Middle East.
– Spanish relations with Arab nations has increased in recent months following Spain’s recognition of Palestine as a state, as reflected in recent high-level bilateral meetings. This week, a planned state visit by Oman’s Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq to Spain, where he was to be received by the King and the Prime Minister, was cancelled due to the death of a relative of the Sultan. The previous visit was to Iraq last weekend, where Sánchez met with Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ Al Sudani. Additionally, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi visited Spain earlier this year for talks with Sánchez at Moncloa Palace.
– The Israeli offensive against Gaza has intensified since March, when Benjamin Netanyahu ended the ceasefire with Hamas, expanding its military operations in Rafah. He also increased the blockade on the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip, so that the situation of the population has worsened. Consequently, Spain and other European countries intensified their criticism and coercive actions.
– In the case of the Spanish government, Sanchez has redoubled the pressure on Israel and, as a result, diplomatic relations with the Hebrew country have worsened in recent weeks. In fact, the latter called for a reprimand meeting with the Spanish ambassador, Ana Salomón Pérez, after considering that Sánchez had called the country a “genocidal state” and following the cancellation of an Israeli ammunition contract by Sánchez’s government. ANDALUCÍA
Andalusia temps on the rise this week, tropical nights: {Translation, summary}
– The forecast for Andalusia this coming week shows a significant rise in temperatures with a heatwave approaching. Temperatures are expected to climb steadily, with highs reaching around 35°C in many areas and potentially higher in the regular hotspots. The heat will be intense and persistent, lasting several days, with warm nights that do not offer much relief.
– The weather will be predominantly dry and sunny, driven by a high-pressure system causing stable and hot conditions across the region. This pattern increases the risk of heat-related health issues and wildfires. Residents are advised to take precautions such as staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
– The so-called “tropical nights”, those in which the minimum temperatures do not go below 20C, will also return this week. According to the Aemet forecast, in the provinces of Seville, Malaga, Jaen, Almeria and Cadiz the mercury will not fall below 20-22 degrees. “The warmest nights are expected in the second half of the week, with minimum temperatures of 22 to 24C in the provinces of Huelva, Seville, Cordoba and Jaen,” said Meteored. Aldi, Dia and Alcampo targeted for illegally making reduced VAT products more expensive, no sanctions despite repeated violations: {Translation, summary}
– FACUA’s monthly study reveals that oranges, Golden apples, and onions were the foods with the highest price increases between April and May 2025 across eight major chains. The net of oranges rose by an average of 18.3%, with Dia standing out, where the price went from €3.99 to €5.99, representing a 50.1% increase. For Golden apples, the average rise was 6.4%, more noticeable in Hipercor with a 24% increase. Onions rose by an average of 5.7%, with an extreme case in Alcampo, where they increased by 43.4%.
– FACUA reminds that these foods were protected by the VAT reduction that came into effect in January 2023 and has been adjusted since then. From 1 January 2025, products such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, bread, milk, and olive oil moved from a 2% VAT rate to 4%, while pasta and seed oils increased from 7.5% to 10%.
– In the year-on-year analysis, lemons lead with an average increase of 44%, reaching a 99.1% rise in Aldi (from €1.15 to €2.29 per kilo). They are followed by pears (22%), eggs (20.3%), garlic (19.1%), oranges (18.2%), Golden apples (16.7%), and onions (13.5%). {Saturday, generic instant coffee 200g at Aldi was €4.80, up €1 from last week, and more than double the €2.39 I was paying a year ago. And the 1kg lasagne had also gone up €1 in a week, €4.50 to €5.50. It’s like they chose some popular items and just tacked €1 on to each; they seem to do that every year at this time, to extort the tourists. And don’t get me started on tobacco prices… -Ed.}
– In contrast, a litre of olive oil has fallen by 42% in the last year, consolidating as the food item with the greatest price reduction, followed by iceberg lettuces (-7%) and carrots (-5.4%).
– FACUA regrets that more than a year after the official request from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to distribution chains, no investigation or sanctioning proceedings have been made public, despite suspicions of possible covert margin increases while the foods were under the umbrella of the tax reduction. Woman attempts to immolate sleeping girlfriend in Fuengirola: {Translation}
– The Fuengirola Local Police in Málaga arrested a woman on Friday for allegedly dousing her sleeping girlfriend with alcohol and setting her on fire, according to municipal sources. The victim has been hospitalised with second-degree burns on face, chest, hands and arms.
– Following the arrest by the Local Police, the case is now being investigated by the National Police. Sources indicated that officers were alerted by a neighbour and, upon arriving at the residence on Calle Colón in the town {pic}, found one woman very distressed over the condition of her partner, and the other with multiple burns on her body.
– Emergency services attended the victim around 10:00 a.m., when they were called to the property where both women were present and identified themselves as a couple.
– The newspaper La Opinión de Málaga reported that one woman set the other on fire with a lighter while she was asleep. The victim was taken to the Málaga Regional Hospital with second-degree burns. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Fraudster who scammed more than 100 people with fake rentals is arrested: {Translation}
– Officers of the Guardia Civil from the Main Post of Rincón de la Victoria have arrested a person suspected of committing the crimes of continuous fraud, identity theft, and forgery of public and private documents.
– The investigation began in October 2024 following several complaints indicating that an individual was carrying out scams through property rentals advertised on specialised internet portals. The inquiry determined that this person posted false rental advertisements for properties located in various parts of the country. More than 100 people from all Autonomous Communities were reportedly defrauded, losing over €80,000, the Guardia Civil stated in a press release.
– Once a victim contacted the scammer, they paid various sums as a deposit, which victims agreed to hastily, fearing they would lose the rental opportunity due to high demand.
To carry out the financial transactions, the suspect used bank accounts under other people’s names, known as “mules,” who received a small financial compensation in return. These individuals handled opening bank accounts and transferring the defrauded money.
– After locating the suspect, investigators arrested him and searched his home in Málaga city, where they found several forged rental contracts, over 60 SIM cards from different phone companies, 40 bank cards from various financial institutions in the names of multiple people, and numerous electronic devices.
– At the time of arrest, the man was subject to 12 judicial claims issued by courts across Spain for investigations into similar crimes. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/malaga/1898649/cae-un-estafador-que-timo-a-mas-de-100-personas-con-falsos-alquileres/

Second blackout in southeastern France in 24 hours caused by another sabotage to the electricity network: {Translation, summary}
– The southeast of France has experienced a second blackout just 24 hours after the one that occurred this Saturday in Cannes, which coincided with the awards gala of the famous Film Festival. In the early hours of Sunday morning, Nice has been the target of new sabotage after the fire of an electrical transformer, which has temporarily left 45,000 homes without electricity, according to the electricity management company Enedis.
– The fire broke out at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning at an electrical substation in the Moulins district, west of Nice, and was described as a “malicious act” by the city’s mayor, Christian Estrosi. ENERGY CRISIS
Top US Energy consultant attributes Spain blackout to problems at “two solar plants” and too much reliance on unproven and ineffective green technologies: {Translation, summary}
– The American economist Diana Furchtgott-Roth {pic}, considered the energy guru of the country’s president, Donald Trump, attributed this week in Madrid the blackout that occurred in Spain on April 28 to problems with “two solar plants.”
– Furchtgott-Roth spoke this Friday in the Senate at the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Forum, presided over by Robert Pittenger. The sessions included the participation of leading European and global experts in the fields of security and intelligence. Topics discussed included artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, 5G, terrorism, energy security, cryptocurrencies, illicit financing, and human trafficking. This was the twenty-ninth edition and the first to be organised in Spain, after previous events in cities such as Paris, Berlin, and London.
– In her remarks, Furchtgott-Roth mentioned that she has heard the current US president say “on more than one occasion” that renewables are expensive and very unreliable for the electrical system. She therefore urged attendees to ask themselves whether “zero emissions will save the planet” and noted that, while there has been much talk in recent months about a “strong defence against Russia,” there has not been enough discussion about “the fundamental pillars for achieving these goals in a cheap and reliable way with energy.”
– She also argued that Russia and China have “reliable and cheap energy,” but not the US and European countries, “as could be seen a month ago with the blackout we had here in Spain due to two solar plants.” For this reason, she stated that her message is that the West is spending too much on green energy “which is having no effect on the climate.”
– She further argued that investing heavily in this type of energy is causing deindustrialisation in Europe and the US and slowing economic growth, which in turn reduces the resources available for defence. She added that the EU spends $355 billion annually on renewable energy, with the US spending even more, funds that could otherwise be used to address security threats such as trafficking and transnational crime.
– “This means,” she said, “that electricity is more expensive instead of cheaper, and it makes our economies weaker instead of stronger. We could be using these sums to fight Russia; we could create a vault in Ukraine to stop these drones, use this money to give Ukraine weapons—arms that would prevent these drones from entering their territory—and it’s not as if this spending helps the climate.”
She added that the US and Europe would be in “a much better position” now had they spent the Green projects funds for the past twenty years on defence and infrastructure, rather than on projects with no perceivable rewards. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5715544/0/equipo-trump-atribuye-apagon-28-abril-los-problemas-dos-plantas-solares-espanolas-5715544/
HEALTH
Málaga Has the Worst Hospital Bed-to-Population Ratio in Andalusia- 35 Beds Closed at the Regional Hospital Due to Lack of Nurses: {Translation, summary}
– Málaga is the Andalusian province with the worst ratio of hospital beds per inhabitant in the public healthcare system. This deficit often leads to bottlenecks, with patients waiting for several hours in A&E for a bed to become available on the wards. Despite this long-standing shortage, the Regional Hospital currently has 35 “closed” beds, according to the Nursing Union (Satse). Most of these beds have been out of use since last summer, a period when scheduled activity is reduced due to staff holidays. Satse claims that the reason they have not been reopened is “the lack of nurses.”
– In response to the union’s complaint, the hospital states that the “optimisation” of its resources is based on “clinical, technical, and organisational criteria.”
– Satse provides a detailed breakdown of where these 35 “closed” beds are located—that is, beds not in use. Twenty-two are situated in one wing of the fourth floor of the Adel hospital building (the main building), three are on the sixth floor of the same tower, and ten are on the seventh floor of the Maternity Hospital (Materno), which is part of the hospital complex.
– After listing these unused beds due to “lack of staff,” Anguita remarked: “If they don’t hire enough professionals for the Regional to be at 100%, how are they going to open the Pascual Hospital?”
– {The hospital response is classic ‘BB’- bureaucratic b*llsh*t. -Ed.} For its part, in response to Satse’s complaint, the hospital explained that it “constantly adapts its work plan to respond effectively to the healthcare needs of the population, always prioritising safety, efficiency, and continuity of care.” According to the hospital, “this dynamic planning involves a permanent evaluation of available resources, with the aim of ensuring that each functional area operates with the highest quality standards, adjusting responsibly to circumstances.” It concluded: “The optimisation of our services is based on clinical, technical, and organisational criteria and aims to ensure that every patient receives quality care.” Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/camas-cerradas-hospital-regional-malaga-falta-enfermeros_0_2003894688.html
