SPAIN

The judge investigating whether the blackout was a sabotage receives reports from Red Eléctrica and the cryptological centre: {Translation, summary}
– Judge José Luis Calama of Spain’s National Court, investigating a potential cyber-sabotage blackout, received reports from Red Eléctrica and the National Cryptologic Centre. He extended the case’s secrecy for another month after reviewing these documents.
– On 29 April, Calama launched an inquiry, suspecting cyberterrorism as a possible cause of the 28 April blackout, which disrupted IT systems supporting critical services like health, energy, and transport. The Government reported a 5-second loss of 15 gigawatts—60% of consumed electricity—an unprecedented event impacting citizens’ welfare and security. Calama ordered reports from the National Cryptologic Centre, Red Eléctrica, and Police Information Directorate within 10 days to determine the blackout’s cause.
– He noted that cybercrimes targeting constitutional order or essential services could be deemed terrorism under Article 573 of the Penal Code. He highlighted the interdependence of critical infrastructures, where failures can cascade, as seen in this incident. Such systems are prime targets for terrorists due to their potential for widespread harm.
Referencing a 2016 Ukrainian blackout caused by cyberattacks, Calama underscored the risks to critical infrastructure from state-sponsored or terrorist cyberattacks exploiting cyberspace vulnerabilities.
– He also cited the “police virus” case, where Russian cybercriminals targeted users globally, including over 300 in Spain. The investigation aims to ascertain whether the blackout was a deliberate act of cyberterrorism, with the potential to destabilise essential services and trigger cascading security failures across Spain’s interconnected infrastructure network. Sanchez announces 100 euros aid for glasses and contact lenses for children under 16 years of age: {Translation, summary}
– The Government will grant a direct aid of 100 euros to pay for glasses and contact lenses for all children under 16 years of age with visual health problems. This was announced this Monday by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, at an event held at the headquarters of the Council of Opticians and Optometrists, together with the Minister of Health, Mónica García, who estimates that this measure will benefit more than half a million children and adolescents in Spain.
– The benefit, which will start to be applied from the next school year starting in September, will be acquired by means of a prescription from the ophthalmologist and can be renewed year by year. Thus, the State will cover 100 euros of the bill of the optical center to which the child goes, regardless of the diagnosis and the family’s financial resources. Driver arrested after his minivan plows through soccer fans celebrating in Liverpool: WARNING- Graphic Violence In Video.
– A 53-year-old British man plowed his minivan into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans who had been celebrating the city team’s Premier League championship on Monday and was arrested, police said.
– There was no immediate word from authorities on how many people were injured. An air ambulance and other emergency vehicles swarmed the scene to respond to reports that multiple pedestrians had been hit.
– “It was extremely fast,” said Harry Rashid, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters and only several feet away. “Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.”
– Rashid said after the car rammed its initial victims, it came to a halt and the crowd charged the vehicle and began smashing windows. “But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,” Rashid said. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.” Rashid said it looked deliberate and he was in shock and disbelief. “My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground,” he said. “They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/liverpool-crystal-palace-arsenal-women-trophy-parade-b2929e5981eeff72e074bf9c901a0bc5

President Donald Trump says Russian leader Vladimir Putin ‘has gone absolutely CRAZY!’:
– President Donald Trump made it clear he is losing patience with Vladimir Putin, levelling some of his sharpest criticism at the Russian leader as Moscow pounded Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles for a third straight night.
– “I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote in a social media post on Sunday night. Trump said Putin is “needlessly killing a lot of people,” pointing out that “missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”
– The attack was the largest aerial assault since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022, according to Ukrainian officials. At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured.
– The U.S. president warned that if Putin wants to conquer all of Ukraine, it will “lead to the downfall of Russia!” But Trump expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well, saying that he is “doing his Country no favours by talking the way he does.” “Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” Trump wrote on social media. MIDDLE EAST

Israel calls for evacuation of virtually all of southern Gaza in the face of an imminent “unprecedented attack”: {Translation}
– On Monday, the Israeli Army issued a new evacuation order affecting nearly all of southern Gaza in anticipation of an imminent “unprecedented attack” targeting “terrorist” objectives of Palestinian militias. “The Israel Defence Forces will launch an unprecedented attack to destroy terrorist capabilities in the area,” said Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avichai Adrae in a message posted in Arabic on social media.
– The evacuation order—excluding Al Amal and Nasser hospitals—specifically applies to the towns of Khan Younis, Bani Suheila, Abasan, and Al Qarara, areas from which Palestinian militias “continue to launch rockets” into Israeli territory.
– Residents will need to relocate to the Al Mawasi area on the southern coast of the Palestinian enclave, designated as “safe” by Israel. “The Khan Younis governorate is considered a dangerous combat zone and has received warnings on several occasions,” the statement added.
– This follows the Israeli Army’s report earlier on Monday of three projectiles launched from Gaza, with two landing within the Palestinian enclave and the third intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory. Hamas-led groups execute four for looting aid trucks amid some Gaza dissent:
– Hamas has executed four men for looting some of the aid trucks that have begun entering Gaza, sources familiar with the incident said on Monday, as a clan leader in southern Gaza issued a challenge to the militant group over guarding the convoys.
– One source said the four were involved in an incident last week when six security officials were killed by an Israeli airstrike as they were working to prevent gang members from hijacking aid trucks.
Sign up here.
– “The four criminals, who were executed, were involved in the crimes of looting and causing the death of members of a force tasked with securing aid trucks,” one of the sources told Reuters. Seven other suspects were being pursued, according to a statement issued by an umbrella group identifying itself as the “Palestinian Resistance”.
– Humanitarian assistance began trickling into Gaza last week after Israel yielded to international pressure and lifted a blockade it imposed in early March that has left half a million people facing starvation, according to a global hunger monitor. Aid groups have said that deliveries have been hampered by looting, but they have blamed Israel for creating a situation in which hundreds of thousands of people have been driven to desperation by the blockade.
– Israel has accused Hamas of stealing aid, which the group denies, and the issue of control over the aid trucks has been hotly disputed. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/hamas-led-groups-execute-four-looting-aid-trucks-amid-some-gaza-dissent-2025-05-26/

HEALTH

Health and unions meet this Monday to negotiate the framework statute under the threat of medical strike on June 13: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Health and unions representing National Health System (SNS) workers will meet on Monday to negotiate the Framework Statute, which governs conditions for around 800,000 healthcare professionals.
– The talks are overshadowed by a potential doctors’ strike set for 13 June, called by the State Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM) after months of stalled negotiations. The CESM accuses the Ministry, led by Minister Mónica García, of failing to address key demands, including regulating on-call shifts, establishing unified job classifications, and improving professional development and pay. Without significant progress, the strike is likely to proceed, potentially disrupting hospitals and primary care services across Spain.
– The Framework Statute, unchanged since 2003, is deemed outdated by unions like CESM, CCOO, UGT, CSIF, and Satse, who argue it no longer meets modern healthcare needs. While CCOO, UGT, and others have not yet joined the strike, they share concerns about delays and may mobilise if talks fail. The Ministry insists it seeks consensus, but unions remain sceptical due to past inaction.
– This meeting is a critical chance to avert industrial action. Failure to agree could see widespread participation, especially among doctors, escalating tensions in the SNS. The unions demand concrete proposals, particularly on on-call shifts and classifications, and view this as a defining moment for the health service’s future. A resolution is crucial to avoid significant disruption and address longstanding grievances of healthcare workers. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The Andalusia Artificial Intelligence Centre will open its doors in November in Granada: {Translation, summary}
– The Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification, Antonio Sanz {pic}, announced Monday that the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Andalusia will open its doors in Granada next November to position the community at the forefront in Europe in the use of AI technologies.
– The launch of the centre will involve an investment of 3.5 million euros by the Junta and will start its activity with the coordination and deployment of the already 65 AI projects that operate in the Board thanks to an additional investment of 36 million euros. {€3.5mil will not come close to paying for a reasonably equipped new AI tech centre, yet the Junta is already spending another €36mil to fund projects the facility will be poorly equipped for? Ten times the price of the start-up to fund work in an untested facility- that seems overly optimistic. And what kind of gov’t projects are so desperate for AI, a new and buggy technology? Sure, AI will help crunch some numbers for a few agencies for improved statistics, and add some advanced video tricks, but it won’t actually solve many problems. I smell an over-paid rat, and some politicians desperate to spend development money the EU gave them before the EU takes it back. These funds need to be closely monitored for back-handers. I suspect these early projects will use AI to coordinate their surveillance activities on the public and add real-time facial recognition technology all their new cameras, like the 60+ new cams in Velez-Malaga. Eventually, after some upgrades over the next few years, it will allow police to wear smart-glasses that will instantly ID any person or licence plate they look at, but of course it’s for the public safety so it must be good. Yikes! -Ed}
– The centre will be located in the building that until now was occupied by the Fernando de los Ríos Consortium in the Granada Health Technology Park, as reported by the Junta in a press release.
