SPAIN
Whatcha hiding Pedro? Sánchez dodges the press throughout the week, avoids all questions from journalists, draws condemnation from Left & Right: {Translation, summary}
– La Moncloa admits to being concerned about the impact that the latest news of alleged corruption within the PSOE is having on its electorate, specifically the audio recordings in which the alleged socialist fixer Leire Díez is heard having a conversation with a businessman under investigation, seeking information to discredit the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit (UCO). From the outset, both the party and the Government have denied the accusations that Díez was working for Ferraz.
– Furthermore, La Moncloa has set another priority objective: to protect, as far as possible, the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has avoided answering questions from the press all week in order to avoid being challenged on this matter.
– On Tuesday, following the Council of Ministers, Sánchez didn’t appear and delegated the press conference to spokesperson Pilar Alegría and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who reiterated support for the UCO and distanced the government from Díez.
– Wednesday, Sánchez’s silence became even more pronounced. He travelled to Brussels for meetings with EU leaders, missing the parliamentary control session, and issued only a written statement on unrelated matters, avoiding any media appearance.
– Thursday saw Sánchez participate in two public events: one at a Social Security call centre and another at Moncloa with Slovenia’s Prime Minister. In both cases, he avoided taking questions from journalists, breaking with usual protocol.
– On Friday, with no public engagements, Sánchez communicated solely via social media, celebrating positive inflation figures.
– This sustained avoidance has fuelled nervousness within PSOE ranks and criticism from coalition partners, who see the lack of clear explanations as damaging. Parties from both left and right have seized the moment, with the PP calling for a demonstration and Sumar and IU criticising the government’s tepid response. The week has highlighted Sánchez’s strategy of silence amid mounting pressure for accountability. AXARQUÍA
Robbers Blast An ATM In Riogordo: {Translation, summary}
– Another attempted robbery with explosives to an ATM. It happened early this morning in the small town of Riogordo in the Axarquia region, with only 2,800 registered inhabitants. A loud explosion startled the residents of the town center of the municipality in the early hours of Friday morning.
– Some thieves have assaulted with explosives an ATM of the branch of the financial institution Cajamar in the town square, the Plaza de la Constitución, next to the Town Hall of Riogordo, and have fled at full speed from the place in a vehicle. The alert to 112 was made at 1.38 hours in the morning.
– Local Police and Guardia Civil officers were quickly dispatched to the scene, but were unable to intercept the thieves.
– As far as this newspaper has been able to learn, the robbery has been thwarted and the thieves have not been able to take any money from the ATM. However, the strong blast has caused significant material damage to the premises of the financial institution Cajamar. NERJA
Temporary closure of El Pinarillo recreation area to prevent forest fires: {Translation}
– The Town Hall of Nerja informs that from June 1 until October 15, the access lane to El Pinarillo park will be closed. During this period, the circulation of vehicles, the use of barbecues and stubble burning is prohibited throughout the municipality.
– The Councillor for the Environment, Javier Rodriguez stressed that these measures have been adopted by the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía, through the Infoca Plan, due to the entry into a time of high risk of forest fires in the Andalusian mountains. From the City Council of Nerja requests the cooperation of all residents and visitors to comply with these rules and protect the natural environment. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
The Plenary of Vélez-Málaga unanimously approves the Vox motion for the construction of an underground parking lot in the area of the regional hospital of Axarquía: {Translation}
– The plenary session of Vélez-Málaga Town Hall has unanimously approved the VOX motion requesting the construction of an underground car park in the area of the Axarquía District Hospital. This aims to resolve a problem that not only affects patients and their families but also impacts the quality of healthcare provided.
– Javier Herreros, spokesperson for the VOX Municipal Group in Vélez-Málaga, expressed his satisfaction with the support from all other groups, emphasising that it is “urgent” to provide parking for “patients, relatives and healthcare staff” who attend the Axarquía District Hospital daily. “In many cases users are forced to park far away, in unauthorised areas or on unprepared plots of land monitored by the notorious informal parking attendants,” Herreros warned. During his speech, Herreros showed an aerial view of the hospital area, clearly demonstrating the availability of land around the hospital suitable for building additional parking spaces.
– Herreros also acknowledged that the lack of parking at the Axarquía District Hospital is a problem caused by “the Andalusian Health Service’s lack of foresight” in failing to include underground parking in the new constructions underway. As an example, Herreros cited the third hospital being built in Málaga city, which will have 815 parking spaces. “Why is it happening in Málaga but not here? It’s incomprehensible,” he said.
– Additionally, the plenary also unanimously approved the VOX motion aimed at addressing serious structural deficiencies in the wastewater drainage system. A clear example is the problems faced in areas such as Cajiz-Las Puertas and Los Íberos, where there is no adequate water treatment system. CALETA DE VELEZ
The alleged murderer of his father in Caleta de Vélez had a restraining order against him from his mother: {Translation}
– The man accused of parricide had accumulated several years of violent episodes towards his parents and brother due to his drug addiction problems. The man had a restraining order against him from his mother following a beating he gave her a few months ago. The parents were separated, and the father, Pepe, a retired plumber, lived in a small house in the Caleta del Sol estate, where the alleged attacker had moved in.
– Investigators suspect that the alleged attacker had been repeatedly stealing small amounts of money from his family members to buy drugs. Father and son had an argument the previous night, which led the father to throw him out of his house.
– Hours later, the son was waiting at the door of the family home, a small house located next to some tennis courts. They started arguing and fighting, and allegedly the son attacked the father, hitting him hard on the head with an object, either a stick or a hammer, which has not been found.
– The Andalusian emergency service 112 received a call at around 8:15 pm reporting that a man was dragging another who appeared unconscious in a house in the mentioned estate in the capital of Axarquía. There was also a neighbour alert about an alleged assault in the same area.
– National Police officers went to the scene along with health emergency services. The professionals could do nothing to save the man’s life, who had a severe head injury. The weapon has not been found. After conducting an initial visual inspection of the area and questioning neighbours, they arrested the suspect. The suspect reportedly claimed that his father had been the victim of a robbery. However, the suspect had bloodstains on his clothes and there were numerous blood traces at the scene. The detainee has had drug addiction problems for decades, according to SUR. FUENGIROLA
Two Scots dead after shooting by hooded gunmen at Irish bar on Costa del Sol:
– The scene was Monaghan’s Irish-themed pub and cocktail bar located on the seafront promenade in Fuengirola. The shooting incident happened shortly after eleven o’clock at night on Saturday 31 May. According to initial reports, several hooded men got out of a car and shot at one or more people who were outside the establishment.
– One of the victims was shot in the chest and died almost instantly, while the second victim was initially considered seriously injured but died at the scene without even being transferred to a hospital.
– The subdelegate of the Government in Malaga, Francisco Javier Salas, has detailed that both victims were of Scottish nationality. He also stated that the author of the shots escaped from the scene, so the National Police activated the protocols of the Costa del Sol Plan against the crime to locate it.

UKRAINE WAR
Russia and Ukraine step up the war on eve of peace talks:
– On the eve of peace talks, Ukraine and Russia sharply ramped up the war with one of the biggest drone battles of their conflict, a Russian highway bridge blown up over a passenger train and an ambitious attack on nuclear-capable bombers deep in Siberia.
– At least seven people were killed and 69 injured when a highway bridge in Russia’s Bryansk region, neighbouring Ukraine, was blown up over a passenger train heading to Moscow with 388 people on board. No one has yet claimed responsibility.
– Ukraine attacked Russian nuclear-capable long-range bombers at a military base deep in Siberia on Sunday, the first such attack so far from the front lines more than 4,300 km (2,670 miles) away. A Ukrainian intelligence official said 40 Russian warplanes were struck. {Update: Ukraine is now claiming 4 airfields across Russia were attacked simultaneously. Ref: https://nypost.com/2025/06/01/world-news/ukraine-wipes-out-dozens-of-russian-nuclear-bombers-in-massive-surprise-attack-on-air-bases-kyiv-says/}
– Russia launched 472 drones at Ukraine overnight, Ukraine’s air force said, the highest nightly total of the war so far. Russia had also launched seven missiles, the air force said. Russia said it had advanced deeper into the Sumy region of Ukraine, and open source pro-Ukrainian maps showed Russia took 450 square km of Ukrainian land in May, its fastest monthly advance in at least six months.

FROM THE “WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING” DEPARTMENT
Andalucia’s Minister of Health suggests lowering medical school standards to solve doctor shortage in word-salad interview response: {Translation}
– The Andalusian Regional Minister for Health and Consumer Affairs, Rocío Hernández {pic}, states that “it is incomprehensible that you need to achieve more than 13.5 out of 14 to get into Medicine.” “More than debating whether a Faculty of Medicine is needed in every province, I believe the real problem lies in the way young people with a vocation access healthcare professions, as many are being left out.”
– Hernández expresses this in an interview with Europa Press, where she advocates for a “review of how young people with a vocation for healthcare access degrees, and whether they are able to or not.” “It is incomprehensible,” she argues, “that you need to score more than 13.5 out of 14 to enter Medicine. We are clearly failing somewhere because there are very capable young people who do not manage to get in.”
– Regarding postgraduate training to obtain a residency (MIR), the Andalusian Health Minister points out that it is the Ministry of Health that “determines” the number of places across the various specialties.
– “Andalusia has significant shortages in certain specialties, such as Family Medicine and Anaesthetics, among others. In fact, we have a structural deficit of 500 family doctors. We must continue working with the Ministry and other regions to ensure proper planning that takes into account current demographic realities and future trends.”
– According to data from the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, Andalusia will lose up to 6,769 doctors due to retirement by 2032, of which more than 40% (specifically 2,917, or 43% of the total) are family doctors. For Minister Rocío Hernández, Primary Care and Family Medicine remain “great unknowns.”
– “Family Medicine is not just about consulting in the surgery. The family doctor can carry out many activities alongside the professionals in the primary care team, such as health promotion and disease prevention,” she lists.
Therefore, the regional government is “placing strong emphasis on ensuring that Primary Care is given a significant number of credits in the undergraduate degree so that it is better known. Likewise, we are promoting rural medicine placements for students.”
– Asked whether healthcare professionals are well paid, Rocío Hernández notes that “this assessment is very personal” but highlights the fulfilment of demands such as allowing Primary Care doctors to provide continuity of care like hospital doctors. She also refers to the “increase in remuneration” in other groups such as Nursing, with an additional €4,600 per year for Primary Care nurses, €3,700 for hospital nurses, and a €150 supplement for A2-level professionals.
– Finally, the Minister makes it clear {not} that Andalusia “will not compete with other autonomous communities” to prevent the exodus of professionals. “Our aim is to retain and foster loyalty among them. We understand that younger doctors have other priorities. We have educated them to be globally aware and able to operate in different cultures, and we must respect those priorities and life plans.” “We will have to try to be more attractive without competing with other regions. We really offer what we can offer. In Northern Europe, they earn more, yes, but they also pay double the taxes and the cost of living is much higher. Therefore, without diminishing and, of course, respecting the decisions of our young healthcare professionals, we must also value what we have in Andalusia,” she concludes. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/esandalucia/sevilla/noticia-hernandez-consejera-salud-no-comprensible-haya-conseguir-mas-135-entrar-medicina-20250601095713.html

Comedian Russell Brand denies rape and sex assault charges from alleged events more than 2 decades ago in UK court:
– British actor and comedian Russell Brand pleaded not guilty in a London court on Friday to charges of rape and sexual assault relating to four women more than two decades ago.
– Brand, once one of Britain’s most high-profile broadcasters and former husband of U.S. pop singer Katy Perry, appeared at Southwark Crown Court and denied all five criminal charges. British prosecutors announced in April that Brand had been charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault against four women between 1999 and 2005. SPACE
The Spanish space agency warns space and land operators after registering a powerful solar ejection: {Translation}
– The Spanish Space Agency (AEE) warned operators of space and terrestrial infrastructure on Sunday to “remain vigilant” and “update forecasts with the most recent data from international agencies” after recording intense solar activity in recent hours caused by a high-speed coronal mass ejection. “Over the past few hours, intense solar activity has been recorded, caused by a high-speed coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with an M8.2-class solar flare originating from the active region AR4100. This CME impacted Earth’s magnetosphere during the early hours of today, 1 June, reaching a geomagnetic Kp index of 8 (severe storm level) between 06:00 and 09:00 UTC,” the AEE stated in a press release reported by Europa Press.
– The agency explained that, based on the Kp scale – used to measure global geomagnetic activity and expressed in values from 0 to 9 – conditions have “slightly moderated” with the Kp index currently hovering around 7.3. However, predictive models indicate “a high probability” of intensified activity in the next 24 hours.
– The European Space Agency (ESA), of which Spain is a member through the AEE, continues to “actively” monitor the event via its space weather services network and, for now, “no dangerous situation is anticipated,” which could occur if the Kp index reaches the extreme level of 9.
“A LEVEL G4 GEOMAGNETIC STORM”
– According to the Space Weather Prediction Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the ESA, the event has been classified as “a level G4 geomagnetic storm on a scale ranging from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme).” “Such phenomena can have various effects, including disruptions to high-latitude power grids, interference with high-frequency radio communications, potential temporary errors in satellite navigation systems, and transient effects on satellites in low orbits due to increased thermospheric density,” the AEE noted.
– However, as the AEE reported, “no significant anomalies have been reported by satellite operators so far.” The AEE, through the ESA, will continue to gather information via detailed monitoring of the situation to assess any changes that may occur, it concluded. Bacteria found on Chinese space station has never been seen on Earth or anywhere else:
– Life in orbit has always intrigued scientists, but few expected to find a microbe that had never been seen on Earth. A bacterium named niallia tiangongensis has popped up aboard China’s Tiangong station, sparking curiosity and concern. The new species was identified by Dr. Junxia Yuan, from the Shenzhou Space Biotechnology Group in Beijing, following detailed genetic and biochemical tests.
– Early research suggests that this tiny organism is well suited to the environment hundreds of miles above Earth’s surface and might offer fresh perspectives on how microbes adapt to low gravity and high radiation.
– How the space bacteria was discovered. Space stations host people, plants, and countless microbes. Many come from crew members or cargo, so it can be tough to figure out if a microbe has simply stowed away or developed new traits during the mission. This odd finding has prompted more investigation into whether the microbe was originally part of Earth’s enormous microbial pool. Experts say that the next step is to confirm if it acquired extra survival skills once exposed to orbital conditions.
– Space travellers already face risks from radiation, microgravity-induced health problems, and psychological stress. The presence of new microbes with uncertain health implications adds another layer of complexity. Some strains might be harmless, but scientists worry about infections if a species learns to thrive in low-gravity settings.
