Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

The European Commission questions the amnesty because it “guarantees the impunity of the administration’s partners” in the Government, “It looks like a self-amnesty”: {Translation}
– The European Commission maintains that the amnesty law does not respond “to a general interest objective,” but rather “seems to be a self-amnesty” as part of a political agreement to achieve the investiture of the Spanish Government and because the beneficiaries were key to its approval. The Commission makes this assessment in its submissions to the preliminary ruling question raised by the Court of Auditors before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) regarding the application of the law approved just over a year ago.
– Its evaluation, which is not binding on the European court, comes on the day the Constitutional Court addresses for the first time in a plenary session the draft amnesty law, which generally endorses the regulation with some minor objections.
– “If there is support to consider that self-amnesties, where those holding political power seek to shield themselves by guaranteeing their legal immunity, are contrary to the rule of law principle, it seems the same criterion should apply when those in government guarantee the impunity of their partners in exchange for parliamentary support,” the European Commission’s lawyers argue.
– They add that “the votes of its beneficiaries were fundamental for its approval in the Spanish Parliament,” therefore, “it does not seem that the law effectively responds to a general interest objective recognised by the Union,” states the document.
– The Commission also criticises that the law “followed an urgent procedure, thus avoiding important reports from advisory bodies and without public consultation” because, as the Venice Commission has pointed out, “the amnesty has deepened a profound and virulent division in the political class, institutions, judiciary, academia and Spanish society.”
“Despite this, Spanish authorities did not heed the Commission’s recommendations to take the necessary time to conduct meaningful dialogue with a spirit of loyal cooperation between state institutions, as well as between the majority and the opposition, to achieve social and political reconciliation.”
– Nor did the Spanish authorities “heed the recommendation that it be approved by a qualified majority,” the document sent to the CJEU highlights.
– Regarding the EU’s financial interests, the document notes that “there is no sufficient link between illegal activities aimed at the secession of part of a Member State’s territory and the Union’s financial interests, in terms of the Union’s own resources.” Therefore, the Commission understands that “it is for the national judicial body to determine whether the specifics of the main case could justify the existence of a sufficient connecting link, particularly if Union funds were diverted to finance the illegal referendum.” However, it is critical of the lifting of precautionary measures because “an obligation imposed by national legislation on national courts to lift all precautionary measures before deciding whether the application of the amnesty is justified in a specific case (…) is incompatible with the principles of primacy of Union law.”
– Equally “incompatible” is the “mandatory two-month deadline to decide on the application of the amnesty,” if this timeframe does not allow competent judicial bodies to adopt procedural measures they consider necessary, such as obtaining additional evidence or hearing persons, to assess the substance of the pending matter. Meanwhile, despite the criticism detailed in the previous article, the Socialists, in their twisted alternate universe, falsely claim the EU vindicated them: {Translation, summary}
– The Government argues that the European Commission has concluded that during the independence process in Catalonia, no European funds were used and therefore considers that the EU executive “validates” the application of the law, despite questioning whether it serves the general interest and describing it as a “self-amnesty.”
– The spokesperson, Pilar Alegría {pic}, even maintains that the Commission validates the application of the amnesty in cases of “embezzlement,” which affect the pro-independence leaders of the procés such as former president Carles Puigdemont and ERC leader Oriol Junqueras, as she stated in the press conference following Tuesday’s Council of Ministers meeting.
– Alegría made these statements after the European Commission expressed to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) its doubts that the law responds to the general interest and noted that it “seems to constitute a self-amnesty” because it was agreed with its beneficiaries to secure Pedro Sánchez’s investiture. Doctors in Andalusia confirm the strike on June 13 in the face of the “unacceptable” position of the Ministry of Health: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian doctors confirm a strike next Friday, June 13, due to the unstable situation of the profession. This was stated by the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) and the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM), citing the limited response from the central government to their demands for improvement.
– “Despite the negotiating efforts of the Strike Committee,” they explain in a statement, “the Ministry of Health has barely moved from its initial position.” It is true that a draft of a new Framework Statute was presented, but in their view, it “not only fails to improve the precariousness of our group, but in some aspects makes it worse.” Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/espana/andalucia/medicos-andalucia-confirman-huelga-junio-ante-inaceptable-20250609114727-nts.html

Violent Home Invaders Receive Only 4 Years In Prison: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian High Court of Justice (TSJA) upheld the conviction of four men for a June 2022 robbery in Periana, Málaga, where they assaulted a homeowner.
– Acting together for illicit gain, one defendant served as a lookout while the others, wearing balaclavas, entered the home. They exploited the owner’s response to her barking dogs, threatening her with a knife to tie them up and striking her head, causing her to fall. After she activated an alarm, they fled, stealing jewellery, a headdress, a gaming console, three watches, and a laptop worth €2,273.30.
– The victim suffered injuries and psychological trauma, recovering only some items. Convicted of robbery with violence and intimidation, with recidivism and disguise as aggravating factors, the defendants received prison sentences ranging from four years and four months to four years and ten months, plus fines. The TSJA dismissed their appeals, citing sufficient evidence. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/provincia/confirman-condena-hombres-asaltar-vivienda-periana-golpear-duena_0_2004112530.html

MALAGA PROVINCE

The second assault in a month in Colmenar- “They left me unconscious and with four crushed ribs for defending some minors”: {Translation, summary}
– Tension in Colmenar over second serious assault in barely a month. A 51-year-old local was knocked unconscious after being beaten by two youths he had apparently confronted in a bar. “I’ve got four cracked ribs for defending some minors,” the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, says resignedly.
– It all kicked off in the early hours of 31 May, around 1 a.m. The man was having a drink with a mate when he noticed the two youths, who later turned out to be the attackers, approaching some girls in the bar. He recognised them: they were two teenage girls from the town, “at most” about 15 years old. He claims it looked like they were harassing the girls and, given the age gap, he worried something might happen to them. “I just asked them to leave the girls alone. They told me to mind my own business,” before attacking him says the victim, who earns a living as a waiter in a hotel where he’s worked for years. He’s currently off work due to the assault, which has hit right at the start of the busy season.
– The town reacted with indignation to this new aggression. The Guardia Civil managed to identify and arrest one of the alleged perpetrators of the beating, a young man in his twenties of North African origin. He is now free after a brief stay in jail. {Why they released a very violent criminal, who is probably a high risk for flight, in a case that occurred in public, with many eye witnesses, remains a mystery. -Ed.}
– The aggression occurred a month after a very serious altercation that left four people injured, three of them with stab wounds, including an off-duty civil guard and his wife, who tried to mediate in a pitched battle that was taking place in the vicinity of a bar. Former pupil kills 10 people and himself in shooting at Austrian school:
– A former pupil killed 10 people and himself at a secondary school in Austria’s second city, Graz, on Tuesday in the worst school shooting in Austria’s modern history. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said six of those killed at the school were female and three were male, without giving any details of their ages. Graz Hospital later confirmed the death of a 10th person.
– Karner said another dozen people had been injured but gave no further details about the victims. Austrian media said most were pupils.
– Police said they believed the 21-year-old Austrian shooter, who was found dead in a bathroom, had been operating alone when he entered the school with two guns and opened fire. His motive remained unclear.
– Director General of Public Security Franz Ruf told state broadcaster ORF that victims were found outside and inside the school on various floors, adding the gunman had been armed with both a shotgun and a pistol, both found at the scene. Nurses’ strike called at Malaga Regional Hospital due to the loss of almost 350 professionals since 2021: {Translation, summary}
– The nurses at the Regional Hospital are called to strike on June 18. The reason, according to the Nursing Union (Satse), which is organizing the protest, is the loss of 349 professionals in that category since 2021 throughout the entire complex. The strike will last from 8:00 a.m. on that day until the same time on June 19. The reasons given by the organization for calling the strike include the “very poor” staffing levels, the lack of coverage for more than half of the reduced work hours and long-term absences, the complete absence of replacements for permissions, leaves, and short-term absences, along with the increase in activity and technical complexity, resulting in an excessive workload. F1 News- It’s official, Madrid will host the Formula 1 Grand Prix from September 11 to 13, 2026: {Translation, summary}
– Madrid will host the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix from September 11 to 13, 2026. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced the upcoming season’s calendar on Tuesday. The World Championship will begin on March 6 in Australia and will feature 24 races.
Specifically, the Madrid Grand Prix will be the sixteenth stop on the motorsport calendar, resolving one of the uncertainties surrounding the choice of this circuit, as the schedule is increasingly tight. Although May was the preferred date, it will ultimately take place from September 11 to 13, marking the end of the European leg of the season. The event at the Montmeló circuit in Barcelona will occur a few months earlier, from June 12 to 14.
The Spanish Grand Prix, which Madrid will host from 2026 to 2035, taking over from Barcelona’s Montmeló track, will feature a 5.47-kilometer circuit, subject to FIA homologation and final design specifications. It will have 20 corners, with an expected qualifying lap time of 1 minute and 32 seconds. The venue is anticipated to accommodate over 110,000 fans per day, including grandstand, general admission, and VIP areas. Strawberry Moon arrives tonight: {Translation, summary}
– The so-called Strawberry Moon will light up the night sky on June 11, marking the arrival of the most emblematic full moon of early summer. However, although its name may evoke reddish tones or a link to this fruit, it actually has nothing to do with its color. The term comes from Native American tribes, who associated it with the strawberry harvest season in the northeastern United States. Over time, this poetic name has endured, becoming one of the most well-known full moons for its symbolic charge.
