News Note: Pedro Sanchez is a hot topic in European Parliament this week, the next 2 articles cover it, from liberal and conservative sources, although both sides appear to be piling on poor Pedro.
~From the liberal leaning 20minutos.es~
A Swedish MEP quotes The Times in Strasbourg and attacks Sánchez: “In my country, he would resign… Sir, the party is over.”: {Translation}
– The European Parliament addressed the situation of the rule of law in Spain this Wednesday during its plenary session in Strasbourg, in a debate that ended very heated due to clashes over corruption cases involving the PSOE. In fact, the Swedish MEP from the European People’s Party, Tomas Tobe {pic}, was one of the most vehement critics of Pedro Sánchez. He began: “We must address something extremely worrying. We have reached a point where we need to be absolutely clear: unfortunately, we have a serious problem with the rule of law in Spain. Corruption, abuse of power, and weakening of institutions.”
– “No one is above the law. And when public trust is broken, there is only one possible path. What Mr Sánchez is doing is not fitting of a European democracy. If something like this happened in my country, the Prime Minister would resign and call elections. Sir, the party is over,” he concluded, with a direct reference in English, and called for the help of European institutions in light of what is happening. “This Chamber and the Commission can no longer remain silent.”
– This diagnosis was echoed by the leader of the People’s Party in the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, who added: “The corruption scandal that keeps growing and is linked to the Spanish Prime Minister, his relatives, his party, and his government is, frankly speaking, unacceptable. Just as unacceptable are the attacks on the free press, on security forces, and on the judges and prosecutors investigating these scandals.”
– “The rule of law is not optional. It does not apply only to certain cases or certain Member States. It is the foundation of democracy. And we have a duty to defend it throughout Europe! The people of Spain deserve more than an apology. They deserve a serious commitment to eradicate corruption — at the highest levels of government — and real accountability,” Montserrat concluded. MEPs from Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Netherlands, Romania & Spain denounce government corruption:
– The European Parliament debated on Wednesday the corruption affecting Pedro Sánchez’s government. Under the title Safeguarding the Rule of Law in Spain: Ensuring an Independent and Autonomous Prosecutor’s Office to Combat Crime and Corruption, MEPs from various countries belonging to the European People’s Party (EPP) warned about the situation in Spain, in line with the cascade of reports published in the international press.
– Pressure on the Executive is mounting as more evidence and suspicions emerge regarding ongoing judicial investigations involving the president’s entire circle. The situation is so serious that it has reached the highest European institutions, which is unusual since domestic matters of a Member State rarely become a subject of debate unless they threaten EU principles. “Mr Sánchez, the party is over,” warned Swedish MEP Tomas Tobé.
– “Corruption. Abuse of power. Weakening of institutions. This Chamber and the Commission can no longer remain silent,” Tobé proclaimed before the European Parliament, denouncing attacks on judges, the media, and security forces. “If something like this happened in my country, the Prime Minister would resign and call elections,” he added, appealing to respect for the rule of law. “Spain deserves better. The people of Spain deserve better than in my country,” he said.
– “We are witnessing President Sánchez trying to stay in power by further weakening the rule of law,” warned Siegfried Muresan, MEP from Romania. “They are misusing European funds, and this is an issue that should concern all European institutions,” he continued.
– From Poland, MEP Michal Wawrtkiewicz gave a warning to the European Commission itself: “There comes a time when silence becomes complicity,” he said, adding that “the European Union cannot afford to be naïve.”
– Portugal, which had already denounced the situation through an MEP, joined the criticism. Ana Miguel Pedro spoke of a “European crisis,” not just a Spanish matter.
– Also from the Netherlands, MEP Dirk Gotnik denounced “democratic decay,” mentioning the Álvaro García Ortiz case.
– The EPP Secretary General, Dolors Montserrat (Spain, PP), also warned that “Europe will not remain silent in the face of such shame.” “Pedro Sánchez is the head of a network of power, money, and silence, involving public officials and his own family,” she warned, referring to the rigging of PSOE primaries, Ábalos’s prostitutes, his brother, his wife, his Attorney General, and the ‘cloacas’ (state dirty tricks). “This is called state corruption,” she criticised, appealing to Socialist MEPs not to whitewash Sánchez.
– This comes in addition to the blow dealt by the European Commission to the Spanish Government with its report on the amnesty, warning that it is a political price the Government pays itself to remain in power. Although not binding, its assessment influences the decision that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) may take regarding this law, which could soon receive the Constitutional Court’s approval under Cándido Conde-Pumpido, despite Europe potentially overturning the ruling later. Even his peers call for accused Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz to serve 6 year prison term: {Translation, summary}
– The Professional and Independent Association of Prosecutors (APIF) has requested that Spain’s Supreme Court try Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz for malfeasance and continuous disclosure of secrets, seeking six years’ imprisonment and 12 years’ disqualification. The case centres on the alleged leak of confidential emails related to the tax fraud investigation of Alberto González Amador, partner of Madrid’s regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
– APIF also seeks four years’ imprisonment and 12 years’ disqualification for Pilar Rodríguez, chief provincial prosecutor of Madrid, accusing her of aiding the leak. The emails, exchanged between prosecutors and González Amador’s lawyer, were leaked to the media, damaging González Amador’s reputation and procedural rights, and harming the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s prestige.
– APIF’s indictment aligns with the Supreme Court judge’s findings that García Ortiz leaked the information deliberately, allegedly under government instructions. The association calls for witness testimonies, including political figures, to clarify the case.
– García Ortiz denies wrongdoing and refuses to resign.

Corredor digs in by exonerating Red Eléctrica from blame for the blackout and challenges the Government to dismiss her if they believe she made mistakes: {Translation, summary}
– Following a government report blaming both Red Eléctrica and energy companies for a recent nationwide blackout, Red Eléctrica’s president, Beatriz Corredor {pic}, has firmly denied any fault in grid management and shifted all responsibility to the electricity producers. She challenged the government to dismiss her if official investigations find Red Eléctrica’s actions decisive in the blackout, but stressed her unique position as a government appointee in a state-majority-owned company.
– Corredor argued that the initial disturbance originated from a private solar plant and that generating companies failed to provide required backup and voltage control, leading to cascading failures and the eventual loss of synchronisation with the European grid.
– Red Eléctrica’s analysis mirrors the government’s technical findings on grid instability but insists its own planning and protocols were correctly followed. The company refuses to pay compensation, arguing that only the electricity generators are liable.
– Meanwhile, Red Eléctrica has implemented reinforced operational measures, increasing system backup to prevent further incidents, though this has raised costs and drawn criticism from the energy sector. The dispute over responsibility and compensation is likely to end up in court, as both sides maintain their positions while official investigations continue. Iberdrola’s all-out war with Red Eléctrica: “It acted negligently and recklessly” in the blackout: {Translation, summary}
– Iberdrola has entered a direct conflict with Spain’s grid operator, Red Eléctrica (REE), following the nationwide blackout on April 28. REE blamed the blackout solely on improper disconnections and poor backup from large power companies, including Iberdrola. However, Iberdrola insists that all its power plants that had received instructions from REE were operational during the incident and accuses REE of reckless and negligent management responsible for the blackout.
– Iberdrola aligns with the Ministry of Ecological Transition’s analysis, which found the system lacked sufficient voltage control due to REE scheduling the lowest number of synchronous plants capable of regulating voltage since the start of the year. The government’s report also indicated that usual electrical protections failed to stop the cascade failure and may have worsened voltage surges.
– Iberdrola criticizes REE for withholding detailed operational data until a press conference and for ignoring prior voltage oscillations and warnings about supply security risks. The company also demands explanations about the France interconnection, identified by ENTSO-e as a problem source, noting different management on April 22 prevented a blackout.
– Defending its personnel and assets as impeccable, Iberdrola commits to legal action against what it calls unfounded and malicious accusations, emphasizing its longstanding record of reliable service. One of the most dangerous jellyfish in the Mediterranean spotted on several beaches in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– At the start of each swimming season, the question is whether there will be many or few jellyfish this year. Experts have already issued a warning, as one of the most dangerous jellyfish in the Mediterranean has been spotted in the waters off several beaches in Malaga. This is the Pelagia Noctiluca, a species considered dangerous due to the risks of its sting.
– In addition to the Malaga coastline, on beaches from Calahonda (Mijas) to Torre del Mar, this jellyfish has also been detected in the waters of Ceuta and Cadiz. Experts have pointed out that the increase in sea temperatures may be driving these specimens to these locations. EUROPE
Spain stands up and communicates to NATO that it will not raise defence spending to 5% of GDP, adopts classic “mañana” strategy: {Translation}
– The NATO summit, scheduled for 24 and 25 June in The Hague (Netherlands), is shaping up as a decisive event for Western security amid an international landscape marked by the threat from Russia and the open war between Israel and Iran. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sent a letter on Wednesday to the leaders of the alliance’s 32 member states, advocating for an increase in national defence spending to 5% of each country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), an initiative openly supported by US President Donald Trump.
– Spain, which ranks low in defence investment, has already responded firmly, refusing to increase military spending. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez considers it “unreasonable” for Spain to reach that figure within the proposed timeframe, by 2032, and believes it would be “counterproductive” and incompatible with maintaining the welfare state. For Spain, this would mean increasing defence spending by €80 billion annually. Sánchez asserts that this level of investment is “incompatible with our welfare state and our worldview.”
– Several countries, not just Spain, oppose raising defence spending to 5%. They face Trump, who at the last NATO meeting in July 2018—during his first presidential term—threatened that the US would leave the alliance if other members did not significantly increase their defence investments. Given this background, the Hague summit promises to be a high-tension encounter.
– Any agreement must be unanimous and would represent the largest rearmament of the military alliance since the Cold War. In recent months, pressure from the White House and Rutte himself has pushed allies to raise their spending to the current NATO minimum of 2% of GDP. Spain announced at the end of April a defence investment increase of €10.5 billion, which will allow the country to meet the 2% target this year.
– NATO’s latest proposal is for allies to dedicate 3.5% of GDP to direct military investment and another 1.5% to security and defence.
– However, as Rutte has repeatedly warned, NATO must do even more to face the threat posed by Moscow, which shows no interest in negotiating peace in Ukraine and could decide to attack another country at any time. Added to this is the conflict between Israel and Iran, with unpredictable consequences. For this reason, the Dutch leader has proposed to allied country leaders a model consisting of dedicating 3.5% of GDP to direct military investment and another 1.5% to security and defence, an initiative supported by Trump and most allied countries.
– Spain’s Defence Minister Margarita Robles stated on 5 June that Spain wishes to reach an agreement and “will not veto anything,” but insisted that NATO must find a formula that does not set a deadline for reaching a specific defence investment percentage. Spanish authorities advocate “continuing progress” in increasing military spending and capabilities. This will be the position Spain defends in The Hague. {Ah yes, the “mañana” strategy. -Ed.}. Evidence is building that people were in the Americas 23,000 years ago:
– The age of “rarely preserved” ancient human footprints dotting the landscape at White Sands National Park in New Mexico has been hotly debated for years. Now, a new study has found that these footprints really are around 23,000 years old — but the date isn’t accepted by everyone.
If the 23,000-year-old age is accurate, it would mean that humans were in North America around the peak of the Last Glacial Maximum, the coldest part of the last ice age — far earlier than archaeologists had previously thought.
– In the new study, the researchers radiocarbon-dated organic sediment in core samples from the site, which provided dates for the footprints as well as for the entire paleolake and river system that once existed there. The analysis was done in labs unaffiliated with earlier studies.
– “Our data supports the original data” that dated the site to 23,000 years ago, study first author Vance Holliday, a professor emeritus of anthropology and geosciences at the University of Arizona, told Live Science. “Plus, we now have an idea of what the landscape was like when people were out there.”
– The new study offers more evidence that the footprints date to the Last Glacial Maximum, when the area was a vast wetland inhabited by ice age animals. The footprints likely came from hunter-gatherers who arrived in the Americas after traveling along the Bering Land Bridge, which connected Siberia and Alaska when sea levels were lower, research suggests.
– For decades, researchers thought the earliest Americans were the Clovis, who lived in North America around 13,000 years ago. But the footprint discovery and others are slowly revealing that Indigenous people reached the Americas much earlier than thought.

Trump Privately Approved of Attack Plans for Iran but Has Withheld Final Order:
– President Trump told senior aides late Tuesday that he approved of attack plans for Iran, but was holding off to see if Tehran would abandon its nuclear program, people familiar with the deliberations said. Iran’s well-defended Fordow enrichment facility is a possible U.S. target; it is buried under a mountain and generally considered by military experts to be out of reach of all but the most powerful bombs.
– Asked if he had decided whether to strike at Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump said, “I may do it, I may not do it.” And he repeated his insistence of Iran’s unconditional surrender: “The next week is going to be very big, maybe less than a week.”
– Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier said his country wouldn’t surrender and warned any U.S. military intervention would bring irreparable consequences.

Vladimir Putin Just Threw Iran Under the Bus:
– The Russian leader is encouraging a war between America and Iran—reasoning that doing so will force Washington to disengage resources from the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
– After an hour-long conversation on his birthday from Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump told the world that the two leaders had discussed the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. Clearly, no resolution to that conflict was proposed. But one can imagine that Russia’s leader—who has been dreaming for many months of a way to get the United States to cut its assistance to Ukraine’s Armed Forces in their ongoing war with Russia—jumping with glee when hanging up with the American leader.
– That’s because, in that conversation, Trump reportedly outlined the justifications for US support of Israel during the latest Mideast war. In other words, Trump made clear that there would be no daylight separating his position on the war and that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
– It is hard to imagine a more positive development for Putin in Ukraine, except perhaps a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. To aid his position in Ukraine, Putin needs two things: the United States to stop arming the Ukrainians, and the global price of oil and natural gas to increase, throwing a lifeline to Russia’s stagnant economy. Russia is one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of natural gas and oil; the higher the price on the world market, the better Russia’s economy does—and the more money Moscow can spend on its war machine. – On Tuesday, French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot called for the immediate immobilisation of all C3 and DS3 models with Takata airbags still in circulation. He said the company’s response had been “unacceptable and scandalous” and had “not matched the scale of the risk”.
– Shortly after, Citroën announced it was placing all affected vehicles under a stop-drive order across Europe. “We have decided to move to a ‘stop drive’ to speed up repairs,” Citroën’s new director Xavier Chardon told the French news agency AFP.
– The company said 441,000 affected cars are still on the road in Europe, including 82,000 in France.
– Takata airbags can explode when exposed to heat and humidity, sending metal fragments into the car. The defect has been linked to dozens of deaths around the world. In France’s overseas territories, at least 17 people have been killed in incidents involving the airbags since 2016. Tennis News- Big Push To Promote Mixed Doubles at US Open! Alcaraz-Raducanu is a US Open mixed doubles entry. So are Osaka-Kyrgios, Keys-Tiafoe, Swiatek-Ruud:
– Imagine Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu competing together for a Grand Slam trophy. How about Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe as a duo? Iga Swiatek alongside Casper Ruud? Or Naomi Osaka with Nick Kyrgios?
– Those are among the high-wattage pairs on Tuesday’s preliminary entry list for the reimagined U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament on Aug. 19-20, before singles competition begins Aug. 24.
– Others on Tuesday’s list: Sinner and Emma Navarro, Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, Zheng Qinwen and Jack Draper, Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul, Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas, Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev, Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton, and 2024 U.S. Open mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
– Ten of the top 11 women in the WTA singles rankings — Coco Gauff, who just won the French Open for her second Grand Slam title, is the only one missing — and 10 of the top 11 men on the ATP tour, including No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic, have registered to compete for the $1 million top prize that will be split by the winners, an $800,000 increase over last year.
– “Look at the field we have,” said Stacey Allaster, who’s in her final year as U.S. Open tournament director. “It is going to be fantastic for the fans.”
– The mixed doubles event is shrinking from 32 pairs to 16, and there is a shortened format — first-to-four-games sets until the final; no-ad scoring (a competitor only has to win by one point); match tiebreakers instead of a third set. Huge Data Breach Exposes 16 Billion Apple, Google, Facebook Passwords And More!:
– It might be high time to rotate your least-changed passwords, if not all of them. The research team at Cybernews has been quietly tracking stolen credential datasets released this year, and the figures aren’t good: a total of 16 billion records leaked (so far), including government accounts, Apple, Google, Facebook, Telegram logins, VPN credentials, among many other types of logins.
– The team found 30 exposed, easily accessible datasets with stolen access information, ranging from tens of millions to a humongous one with 3.5 billion records, pertaining to a Portuguese-speaking population (Brazil, if we had to guess given the size). While the provenance and relationship between the contents was sometimes ascertained, many of the datasets were completely unnamed. Additionally, while most of the information is apparently login-password sets, there’s a collection of login tokens and cookies, potentially letting attackers skip some forms of 2FA altogether. The fact that there are government logins and VPN credentials potentially put lives at risk, too.
– You might be wondering if these datasets are just remixes and remasters of old info, but Cybernews claims they’re all freshly pressed collections. The site claims the sets were only exposed on the open internet for a short while, but that can be both a blessing and a curse — while few people only took a look at them, the fact they’re now gone could prevent wider reporting, thus not letting as many users know their info could be compromised.
– Even worse, new datasets of gigantic dimensions are reportedly popping up “every few weeks,” illustrating the point that security professionals have been making for decades now, mostly to deaf ears: there are massive botnets and wide-ranging exploits doing the rounds at any given moment, and these attacks have become a constant threat rather than an occasional one. Cybercriminals love massive datasets as aggregated collections allow them to scale up various types of attacks, such as identity theft, phishing schemes, and unauthorized access.
– Cybernews poignantly states that even with a success rate of less than one percent, at this scale we’re still talking millions of accounts hacked. As always, we recommend running your email(s) through the website Have I Been Pwned, updating old login credentials, and updating software and firmware on your devices to make sure you’re fully patched against known exploits and security holes.
