SPAIN
Spain in a ‘critical situation’ due to a shortage of nurses and record levels of emigration- more than 1,000 have applied to go abroad in 2025: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusia faces a significant nursing shortage, with a ratio of 5.56 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, one of the lowest in Spain and well below the European average of 8.19. This shortage contributes to uneven healthcare quality across Spain, as some regions like Navarra have nearly double the nursing staff per capita compared to Andalusia.
– The deficit affects patient care and leads to professional burnout, prompting many nurses to seek employment abroad where they can find better working conditions at higher wages; over 1,000 nurses have applied to leave Spain in the first half of 2025 alone. The General Nursing Council has highlighted this as a chronic, entrenched problem and has called on the Ministry of Health to take urgent action.
– The disparity in nurse distribution means Andalusian citizens may receive lower quality care compared to other regions, a situation described as unacceptable by nursing authorities. Addressing Andalusia’s nursing shortage is crucial to ensuring equitable healthcare across Spain. The international press on Sánchez- a ‘villain’ surrounded by corruption, prostitutes and a porn star: {Translation}
– Despite Pedro Sánchez having boasted on numerous occasions during his years leading La Moncloa of having a good international image, this is now more tarnished than ever due to successive scandals emerging within his Government and party. In fact, this very week two editorials were published harshly criticising the image of the Prime Minister, portraying him as “the villain” of NATO or as a political leader embroiled in corruption scandals involving prostitutes, a nightclub bouncer, and a porn star.
– Specifically, the British newspaper The Telegraph dedicated an editorial last Saturday titled “Prostitutes, a porn star and a bouncer – the Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez embroiled in a corruption scandal,” which initially recalled that the socialist leader came to power in 2018 with the aim of ending the corruption he claimed was represented by Mariano Rajoy’s Government. “Now it is his Socialist Party that is embroiled in a corruption scandal involving prostitutes, rigged public contracts, secret recordings, a former nightclub bouncer, and an adult film actress,” the British paper continued, noting that the wife of the PSOE’s general secretary, Begoña Gómez, and his brother, David Sánchez, are also under investigation for allegedly committing various offences.
– The Telegraph states that Sánchez’s “enemies” call him “dog” instead of Pedro because “it is impossible to get rid of him,” but asserts that the scandals revealed in recent weeks threaten to unseat him from La Moncloa, placing the Spanish leader in the weakest position since he took office. He is described as one of the “most influential left-wing leaders in Europe.”
– Partner of ETA’s political wing. The paper also highlights the irony of Sánchez’s situation after having ousted Rajoy for alleged corruption by forming a coalition with “communists, separatists and the political wing of the ETA terrorist organisation.” These partners, the editorial claims, do not want to abandon Sánchez to prevent the PP from governing with the “far-right” Vox.
– The scandals are compounded by the Government’s inaction over the DANA floods, power outages, and detailed descriptions of various corruption cases involving key PSOE figures such as Santos Cerdán, José Luis Ábalos, and Koldo García Izaguirre. All are described as Sánchez’s “closest comrades,” facing accusations of sexism and indications of frequent use of prostitution. One such case allegedly involved Ábalos and the porn star Letizia Hilton, who reportedly kept a pen drive with secret recordings of conversations with Sánchez.
– Villain of NATO. The same newspaper claimed that pressure on the “handsome Madrilenian” (a nickname used by Sánchez’s supporters, “Mr. Handsome”) is also growing within NATO, highlighting his disagreement with US President Donald Trump over increasing Defence spending to 5% of GDP, which Sánchez refuses to implement.
– Meanwhile, the European delegation of the American newspaper The Politico published another editorial on Tuesday titled “The new villain of NATO: Spain.” It explains that “everyone agrees” that Spain, with Slovakia in second place, is the new “headache” for the formerly named Atlantic Alliance. The US paper calls Madrid “the new pariah of the alliance,” citing the angry words of an anonymous European Defence Minister who said he “had no words to express his disgust.”
– Government coalition responsible. In this regard, the paper states that Sánchez’s actions are generating “little sympathy” at the International Summit in The Hague and suggests it is impossible for Sánchez to meet NATO’s demands with only a Defence spending increase to 2.1% of GDP, as defended by the Spanish Government. This comes alongside the need for the alliance to remain united and for member states to take equally significant measures.
– The American paper attributes these decisions to the “political winds” in Spain, where the “leftist” coalition led by Sánchez opposes increased military spending, while reminding readers that Spain has “always” failed to meet its NATO commitments. Israel accuses Sánchez of “demonizing” them and places him “on the bad side of history”: {Translation}
– Strong statement from the Israeli embassy against Pedro Sánchez. The Hebrew embassy in Madrid accuses the President of the Government of “demonizing” them and places him ” on the bad side of history” after this Thursday, before the European Council meeting in Brussels, it called for the immediate suspension of the EU Association Agreement. A fact that Tel Aviv considers “morally indefensible”.
– In the note, the Israeli legation criticises Sánchez for asking his partners to suspend the agreement with Israel just a few days after, they argue, Iranian ballistic missiles fell on Israeli territory for twelve days in a row. Israel recalls that “29 civilians were killed, hundreds were injured, residential neighborhoods were reduced to rubble and millions of Israeli citizens were forced to take shelter daily to protect their lives.”
– The Hebrew diplomacy shows its discomfort, the statement continues, after “in the midst of this aggression, the Government of Spain chose not to condemn, not even once, the deliberate and continuous attacks against Israeli civilians, initiating an anti-Israeli crusade”. Instead, they reproach, “he has called for the suspension of European agreements with Israel and the imposition of an arms embargo on the country that was under attack!” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/nacional/israel-acusa-sanchez-demonizarles-situa-lado-malo-20250626191159-ntrc_amp.html
MALAGA PROVINCE
The first heat wave- How will it affect each municipality of Malaga?: {Translation}
– The first (official) heatwave of the summer will arrive this Saturday. After enduring a scorching June, the warning from Aemet is causing considerable concern among citizens, as the start of July points to a situation even more stifling than what has been experienced so far.
– Aemet describes how a large anticyclone at mid and high levels, coming from the interior of the African continent, will intensify and extend to cover most of the Spanish territory starting Friday, the 27th. “A southerly flow will bring a very warm and relatively dry air mass over the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, which, combined with high sunshine, will lead to a progressive rise in temperatures over the coming days,” Aemet’s forecast explains. The onset of this large-scale situation is expected on Saturday, the 28th, and will last at least until Tuesday, 1st July.
– But how will this situation actually affect the province of Málaga? In general terms, a first distinction can be made between the coast and the inland areas. In reality, in the city and the Costa del Sol, the rise in temperature will hardly be noticeable, whereas in the municipalities further from the sea it will be felt, although nowhere near as much as in the neighbouring provinces of Seville, Córdoba, and Granada.
– In Málaga city, during this period, maximum temperatures will hover around 31 degrees Celsius, occasionally reaching 32, which is considered normal for this time of year. Minimum temperatures will be high, around 24 degrees, but more or less in line with what has been happening since late May. The situation will be similar in Marbella and Vélez-Málaga.
***Climatic refuges***
– In fact, several municipalities on the coast can be considered “climatic refuges” in this context of widespread haze. This will be the case in Nerja, where temperatures will not exceed 28 degrees on any day, according to Aemet’s forecast; although nights will be warm (24-25 degrees). Similar values are expected in Torrox and, generally, in the easternmost part of the Axarquía coast, which will experience the most pleasant climatic conditions over the weekend.
– On the other hand, the hottest municipalities during this first summer heatwave will be those in the regions of Antequera and Ronda and the higher villages of Guadalhorce. In the Vega, for example, the mercury will reach 34-35 degrees, but these values are not very different from those of this same week. Meanwhile, in the Serranía, similar levels will be reached, and only occasionally will it hit 36 degrees. In upper Guadalhorce, temperatures may rise a bit more, with 36 degrees being a typical daytime value in Álora (35 in Coín).
– As if that were not enough, Aemet warns that the arrival of this air mass from North Africa will be accompanied by suspended dust starting Sunday afternoon, mainly affecting the western half of the peninsula. “The haze could be accompanied by middle and high cloudiness, which adds some uncertainty to the forecast of maximum temperatures during the episode,” the State Agency clarifies. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Two hundred parking spaces created in busy Costa del Sol town in time for summer: {Translation}
– Rincón de la Victoria town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol has created a new public parking area with capacity for 200 vehicles in the centre of Torre de Benagalbón.
– The new space is located on municipal land at the junction of Camino Viejo de Vélez and Calle Aliseos. “Over the last few days work has been carried out to prepare it for use, which will be available until work begins on the future covered sports pavilion,” explained the councillor for works and general services, Sergio Díaz.
– The mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, said: “This new car park will help to improve mobility and facilitate access for both residents and visitors in one of the busiest areas of the municipality during the summer.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/axarquia/two-hundred-parking-spaces-created-busy-costa-20250624182917-nt.html
HEALTH
The End of Medical Confidentiality- AI will allow doctors to listen to patients and forget about typing: {Translation}
– Artificial intelligence has entered primary care consultations this month. The aim is for this tool is to type the conversation between the GP and the patient, letting the doctor focus entirely on listening and obtaining information about the latter’s condition. This will facilitate a closer relationship and reaching an accurate diagnosis.
– For now, this is only a pilot programme, but the plan agreed by Spain’s Ministry of Health and the regional ministries is for the system to be operational in all primary care consultations in the country before the end of 2027. On Tuesday, the health minister said that, in the next two months, the AI tool will operate on an experimental basis in seven regions that have volunteered to test it. The idea is to check for any snags and possible room for improvements.
– Mónica García stated that the process, funded by state and European investments, will be controlled by the healthcare professional, who will subsequently review, correct and validate the automated summary. This format is already fully operational in the UK and is currently being implemented in Sweden and Switzerland, among other healthcare systems.
– The health minister said that AI will probably have more functions in health centres in the future, but that for now it will only start with the transcription and automated summary of the consultation. Always with the patient’s permission, the tool will record the conversation, summarise it and present it in a format for inclusion in the record. The doctor will review and edit the content and incorporate the diagnosis, treatment and possible tests or referrals. This revised report will be incorporated into the medical record.
– According to sources, in the future, Spanish regions will consider using AI in other applications, such as requesting and managing appointments, managing professional agendas or preparing summaries of the patients.
– {If the gov’t and police cannot secure their data, as evidenced by the endless data breaches, the medical services will be just as bad. If this develops as planned, all your medical info may as well be public. -Ed.}

OTHER
The ironic dichotomy of Sanchez- piss off your friends then rely on them for protection: {DigameXtra}
– Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has secured a notable exemption from NATO’s new defence spending target of 5% of GDP, opting instead to maintain spending at 2.1%, a figure he deems “sufficient and realistic” for Spain’s needs. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labelled Spain a “low payer” and threatened to impose punitive tariffs on Spanish goods to compel higher military contributions.
– The irony lies in Sánchez’s stance on tariffs: while rejecting Trump’s threats, he pointed out that trade policy, including tariffs, is governed by the European Union, not individual member states like Spain. Thus, Spain relies on the EU to shield it from unilateral U.S. trade penalties, even as it resists NATO’s defence spending demands.
– This situation highlights a complex dichotomy: Spain refuses to meet NATO’s increased defence spending expectations, provoking U.S. ire and tariff threats, yet simultaneously depends on the EU’s collective trade policy to protect it from those very tariffs. Sánchez frames Spain’s defence approach as sovereign and pragmatic, while leveraging EU solidarity against external economic pressure, underscoring tensions between national autonomy, alliance commitments, and international trade governance.
– On Thursday, Antonio Garamendi, president of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, criticized Sánchez for the spending opt-out. “We have to stick with with our allies and not going along with the other Europeans is an error, and even more so if that increases the chance we will be punished,” Garamendi said.
– While Spain is under the umbrella of the European Union, which negotiates trade deals on behalf of all 27 member countries, it could still be targeted by tariffs that hit its most vulnerable industries,” Garamendi said. He specifically pointed to Spanish steel, cars and olive oil sectors. “There are industries that can be impacted, and that has to concern us,” he added.
