SPAIN

Spanish judge orders Santos Cerdan, ex-senior ruling PSOE official, and close ally of Sanchez for 10+yrs, to be remanded in custody in graft probe. Sanchez responds with bizarre claim that this somehow demonstrates the strength of the socialist organization:
– A Spanish Supreme Court’s investigating judge ordered ex-senior ruling Socialist Party official Santos Cerdan to be remanded in custody on Monday in a corruption inquiry that could destabilise Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s fragile minority government. The court denied bail for Cerdan, but did not immediately release any additional information.
– The Cerdan case was the latest and most serious in a series of scandals that have left Sanchez having to apologise and fend off calls from opponents for a snap election.
– Judge Leopoldo Puente is investigating allegations against Cerdan, former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos and the latter’s aide Koldo Garcia that they received kickbacks for awarding public works contracts. Cerdan, who resigned earlier this month from his position as the Socialist Party’s third-ranking official and lawmaker, denies the allegations. Both Abalos and Garcia say they are innocent.
Cerdan’s resignation followed Puente’s statement citing “strong evidence” of Cerdan’s possible involvement in the “improper awarding” of contracts.
– Sanchez on Monday defended his Socialist Party’s handling of the corruption allegations against Cerdan, saying that it had acted decisively by asking him to resign.
“Justice must determine the responsibilities that Santos Cerdan may have,” Sanchez told reporters during a summit in Seville.
{So Pedro had no idea of what his right-hand man for the last 10 years was up to? Pedro claims he was oblivious to an awful lot of corruption by his closest associates- his wife, his brother and his closest assistant. Personally I don’t believe he is that stupid. -Ed} Photo: Emporda. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/spanish-judge-orders-remand-jail-pms-ex-ally-graft-probe-2025-06-30/

The PP demands Sánchez “immediately abandon” La Moncloa (the Presidental Residence): {Translation}
– The Secretary-General of the PP, Cuca Gamarra {pic}, emphasised on Monday that the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, “must immediately leave Moncloa,” following the Supreme Court’s decision to send the former Socialist Party Organisation Secretary Santos Cerdán to prison.
“Sanchismo is in prison without bail,” Gamarra said at a press conference at the PP headquarters, highlighting the connection between the head of government and the former PSOE Organisation Secretary.
– She stressed that Sánchez “is and has been Prime Minister” thanks to Cerdán, who, in turn, “has done everything he has done thanks to Pedro Sánchez.” “If one falls judicially, the other must fall politically,” she concluded.
– Meanwhile, the President of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, stated that today “the whole UN” knows about Sánchez’s “corruption.” The regional leader expressed this on social media, noting that Spaniards already knew the Prime Minister was “cornered by scandals,” but now the UN, meeting in Seville “amid this shame,” also knows.
“Corruption keeps Sánchez in power. It has him tied to his chair,” the regional leader asserted.
– Additionally, Vox spokesperson José Antonio Fúster warned on Monday that “number 2 has fallen” and now they are “going for number 1.” “Cerdán is going to jail as he should; number 2 has fallen, now number 1 and all those around him will fall,” Fúster stressed minutes after the court decision. “There will be no impunity, no pardons, no amnesty, we will not tolerate political corruption. Vox will go to the end,” Fúster insisted, adding that although “nothing is to be expected when the Prosecutor’s Office is controlled by Pedro Sánchez, it is also true that there are still honest judges and prosecutors.” Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/espana/pp-exige-sanchez-abandonar-inmediatamente_0_2004254692.html

Has first vice president of the government, María Jesús Montero, lost her mind? She states of the jailing of Cerdán, formerly Secretary of the PSOE and Sanchez’s right-hand man: “It is a matter of a person who has nothing to do with the PSOE”: {Translation, summary}
– The First Vice President of the Government, María Jesús Montero {pic}, expressed on Monday her “respect” for the judicial decision made by the Supreme Court to order the provisional imprisonment of the former PSOE Organisation Secretary Santos Cerdán and assured that this is “a matter concerning a person who has nothing to do with the PSOE.”
– Montero highlighted this in statements to journalists at an event in Seville, where she also said that the Socialist Party “acted very decisively when it became aware of the solid evidence accompanying this case.”
– In addition to rejecting calls for an election following the Supreme Court’s decision, she stated that both the Prosecutor’s Office and the High Court “will have their reasons and motives” for ordering Cerdán’s provisional imprisonment. She defended that justice “must go all the way to find out everything that has happened around this case.”
– It was Supreme Court judge Leopoldo Puente who ordered Santos Cerdán’s imprisonment, to be served in custody without bail, due to his alleged role in a scheme involving kickbacks from supposed irregular public works contracts. The magistrate, responding to requests from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the accusers, considers that the former third-in-command of the PSOE may have committed crimes of participation in a criminal organisation, bribery, and influence peddling. ANDALUCÍA

Tourist and temporary rentals will have to be registered to legally place offers on the Internet from Tuesday: {Translation, summary}
– UGT (General Union of Workers) highlights the importance of the new mandatory registration system for tourist rentals, which will require all short-term rental properties advertised online to be registered with a unique identification number starting July 1, 2025.
– This national digital “One-Stop Shop” registry, launched by the Ministry of Housing, aims to regulate and monitor tourist accommodations across Spain, ensuring legality and compliance with safety and tax obligations.
– Platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com must verify that listings display this registration number and remove unregistered properties promptly.
– In Andalusia, this national registration complements the existing regional VFT licence, meaning properties must comply with both systems. UGT supports including employment and contractual data in the registry to improve labour oversight.
– The union also stresses that limiting tourist rental licences in high-pressure housing areas is urgent to protect residential rental supply and address the housing crisis. Overall, the registry is seen as a key tool to professionalise the sector, combat illegal rentals, and ensure fair competition and consumer protection. Malaga dodges high temperature warnings during the first heatwave of the summer: {Translation, summary}
– The first heatwave of this summer has passed its midpoint without any meteorological warnings for high temperatures in the province of Málaga. The state meteorological agency Aemet forecasts little change on Tuesday, the first of July, with slightly lower highs of 33°C in Ronda and 31°C in Málaga city. Nighttime lows on the coast are expected to be “torrid”, 25°C in Marbella and Vélez-Málaga. The Regional Government calls for acceleration of the expansion of Malaga Airport and for the Government to allocate the necessary budget immediately: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Government urges faster progress and budget allocation before 2027 for Málaga Airport’s expansion, criticising the Transport Ministry for announcing the design without funding. Tourism Minister Arturo Bernal warned that delaying investment risks infrastructure collapse as passenger numbers approach capacity. He highlighted that exceptions for urgent projects exist in current investment plans, as seen with Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, and questioned why Málaga cannot receive similar support. Bernal also sent a letter demanding urgent action from the Transport Minister.
– In response, the PSOE defended the Spanish Government’s commitment by deflecting to other issues, accusing the Andalusian Government of failing electoral promises. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/junta-pide-acelerar-ampliacion-aeropuerto-malaga-presupuesto_0_2004254402.html

TORROX

Today, Tuesday 1/7, the blue zone parking enters into force on the coast of the municipality of Torrox: {Translation}
– From 1 July until 31 August, the blue zone will be in operation along the coast of the municipality of Torrox. This involves a parking restriction limiting stays to a maximum of two hours, free of charge, in effect from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 22:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00, except on public holidays. Bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles are not permitted to use these areas, as there are other specific designated places available for them.
– The Torrox Local Police also point out that people with reduced mobility, if they find their designated spaces occupied, may use the blue zone without the need for a device or time limit until their specific space becomes free, provided they display the authorised card. They have also emphasised that although parking in the blue zone is free for two hours, there is still the possibility of a fine. This would apply if parking time is exceeded, if the vehicle is moved but a few metres in an attempt to begin a 2 hour period, or if the parking disc is adjusted to simulate a later parking time. Offenders could face fines of 50 euros and even vehicle removal by the municipal tow truck.
– Furthermore, they remind that in the historic centre of Torrox, a blue zone operates throughout the year, but in that case, the parking limit is only one hour.
– The Local Police have announced that any device or similar item to the official parking disc that allows verification of parking time will be accepted. If necessary and you do not have an alternative at that moment, a handwritten note will be accepted until you can obtain a free disc.
– This initiative aims to promote dynamic turnover of parking spaces in the zones, days, and times indicated by the vertical signage. In the provided link, you can view the usage rules and participating establishments: https://ftp.torrox.es/urls/p/iza

UK police investigate Bob Vylan, Kneecap’s Glastonbury performances:
– British police on Monday launched a criminal investigation into musician Bob Vylan {photo left} and Irish rap band Kneecap’s performances {photo right} at Glastonbury music festival after they led derogatory chanting about the Israeli military and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. {Bob Vylan also taunted Brits by singing a song where the only lyrics were: “Heard you want your country back- shut the f*ck up!” Of course progressive Reuters left out that part. See videos of the offensive performances in yesterday’s DigameXtra. -Ed.} Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/uk-police-investigate-bob-vylan-kneecaps-glastonbury-performances-2025-06-30/

UPDATE- US State Department pulls visas issued to British punk-rappers Bob Vylan after antisemitic ‘hateful tirade’ at Glastonbury, putting planned US tour in doubt.:
– English punk-rap duo Bob Vylan are facing significant backlash to their “death to the IDF” chant from Glastonbury over the weekend, with the State Department confirming Monday that it has revoked the the group’s U.S. visas. Meanwhile, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that United Talent Agency has dropped Bob Vylan following the controversy.
– “The @StateDept has revoked the US visas for the members of the Bob Vylan band in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants,” Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau wrote on X on Monday morning. “Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country.”
– Bob Vylan’s visas have been revoked months before the duo was slated to begin a 16-date North American tour this fall, starting in Spokane, Washington in October. It’s currently unclear what will happen with those shows, but assuming the visa issue still stands by then, they’ll most likely be canceled.
