Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
The EU warns of a ‘significant increase’ in the perception of corruption in Spain during Pedro Sánchez’s term in office: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission’s latest report underscores a significant rise in the perception of corruption within Spain’s public sector. According to the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, Spain scored 56 out of 100, ranking 16th in the European Union and 46th globally. This negative perception has increased considerably over the past 5 years, corresponding with the coalition government of PSOE and Podemos/Sumar.
– The report highlights that 87% of Spanish businesses believe corruption is very widespread, compared to the EU average of 63%. Furthermore, 53% of companies consider corruption a major obstacle to conducting business, well above the EU average of 35%. Sectors identified as being at high risk include public procurement, political party financing, infrastructure projects, and public service contracts.
– The Commission also notes that political party financing remains a high-risk area, with no significant reforms implemented despite recommendations from the Court of Auditors. Ongoing corruption cases, such as the Koldo affair and investigations involving former minister José Luis Ábalos, are specifically referenced. Oblivious of these serious concerns, the Spanish Government has publicly welcomed the report’s conclusions, focusing on support for judicial reforms while not addressing the numerous references to corruption. ANDALUCÍA
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” in Sanchez’s Spain- Andalusia sees Catalonia’s management of personal income tax as an ‘attack on equality’: {Translation}
– The Junta has expressed its rejection of Catalonia assuming the collection of 100 per cent of the Personal Income Tax (IRPF), considering it an “attack on equality” and a new grievance against the community by the Government of Pedro Sánchez. This was emphasised yesterday by the Minister for Economy, Finance and European Funds, Carolina España, who described the initiative as “unconstitutional” for promoting “a privileged financing system for Catalonia that we cannot allow, as it violates the principle of equality for all Spaniards.”
– Carolina España {pic} regarded the decision for “Catalonia to collect the IRPF as a further step towards the Catalan quota and towards privileged and tailored financing for Catalonia,” ending something that had functioned “reasonably well” until now, namely the State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT). The minister noted that handing over the management of the Tax Agency shows that “we continue to witness the dismantling of the State of the Autonomies by the back door.” In her view, “they are willing to fragment it and hand it over in parts to the highest bidder,” referring to the decision to cede 100 per cent of the Income Tax.
– The Andalusian Government spokesperson also criticised the president, Pedro Sánchez, for “pressing ahead with this outrage after having promised the moon to the separatists, while the rest of the autonomous communities continue to demand a financing system that is fair, balanced and equitable for all territories.” According to the minister, “these privileges date back to the foundations of this legislature with agreements negotiated and agreed between a fugitive from justice, such as Puigdemont, and a corruption accused whom the judge has sent to prison, such as Santos Cerdán.”
– Carolina España highlighted that the Prime Minister “is neither concerned about Spain nor Catalonia; he only cares about the votes that keep him in government,” also pointing out the “complicit cooperation” of the Minister of Finance and socialist candidate in the forthcoming Andalusian elections, María Jesús Montero.
– The Andalusian Minister for Economy recalled that “Andalusia is losing more than 1.5 billion euros annually compared with the average received by each of the communities.” In this regard, she added that “we are four communities receiving less than the average and it is clear that Catalonia is not one of them.”
– Carolina España further indicated that “the problem is not only that Catalonia collects 100 per cent of the IRPF, but also that the Catalan governments have proven to be dreadful managers, with soaring debt that this issue does not resolve, nor the debt forgiveness promised by Pedro Sánchez’s government.” She also warned of the “weakness” of the Spanish Government in the face of the demands of its coalition partners and stated that “what it must do is govern, not merely survive, by addressing important issues such as regional financing, something that cannot be delayed any longer.”
– Finally, the Minister for Economy urged Pedro Sánchez that “if he is incapable of governing and not even able to draft and pass a General State Budget, what he should do is call elections and allow the government that emerges from the polls to do what must be done.” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/andalucia/andalucia-ve-atentado-igualdad-cataluna-gestione-irpf-20250708102928-nt.html
TORROX
The PSOE Torrox presents arguments against the prohibition of tents on the beach and calls for “a more balanced regulation”: {Translation}
– The Socialist Municipal Group of Torrox has submitted formal objections to the modification of the Municipal Ordinance Regulating Beaches, “promoted by the governing team of the People’s Party, which seeks to impose a total ban on tents, jaimas or any type of canvas structure on all the municipality’s beaches.”
– The Socialist spokesperson and councillor, María Nieves Ramírez, representing the group, stated that this measure is “radical and incoherent,” whilst also “harming both residents and visitors who make responsible use of these facilities during the summer season.”
– In their written objections, the Socialist Group demands “a regulatory alternative to the total prohibition,” arguing that “it is possible to establish specific zones on the beaches where the use of such structures is permitted, always under clear rules of coexistence and respect for the environment.”
“If the aim is to mitigate or limit the negative effects of using tents, there are more proportionate measures than a radical ban. To regulate is not to prohibit, and dialogue with citizens must take precedence before adopting such restrictive decisions,” Ramírez Moreno affirmed.
– Furthermore, the PSOE requests the opening of a dialogue space between the Town Hall, the citizenry, and the affected sectors, with the objective of “agreeing on a reasonable regulation that contemplates the diversity of uses and needs of the various beach areas within the municipality.” The Socialist Municipal Group trusts that these objections will be heeded and reiterates its commitment to a balanced and participatory management of the Torrox coastline. HEALTH
The closure of almost 80 beds at El Hospital Materno Infantil de Málaga in Malaga forces the suspension of operations on children: {Translation, summary}
– The Materno Infantil Hospital in Malaga is suffering a ‘total collapse’, according to the Satse Nursing Union, which has warned that the closure of 79 paediatric and neonatal beds is forcing the suspension of operations on children, surgeries that are already scheduled and which, in many cases, are cancelled when patients arrive at the health centre for surgery. ‘It is dehumanising,’ say union officials, who point out that this situation is ‘a direct consequence of the lack of nurses’. ‘Children arrive at the operating theatre on an empty stomach for operations that end up being cancelled due to a lack of staff,’ said the union, which maintains that ‘this is intolerable, dehumanising and represents an unacceptable deterioration of the Andalusian public health system’.
– According to a statement issued by Satse, on Tuesday 8 July, two ENT operating theatres at the Materno de Málaga hospital were deprogrammed due to a lack of nurses in the paediatric operating theatre. Yesterday, Monday, two surgical procedures were suspended, as detailed by the union, ‘for two minors with different pathologies, due to a lack of beds for their subsequent admission.’
– ‘These are not isolated incidents,’ insists the union, which stresses that ‘they are unacceptable.’ ‘We are faced with decisions that must be taken as a result of completely irresponsible management and a failure to hire nurses,’ they complain, while reiterating that ‘the situation is now unsustainable’ and that nursing professionals are under ‘enormous pressure, with excessive workloads, forced transfers and a total lack of planning’.
– On Tuesday, Satse explained that paediatric patients who should be treated on the fifth floor of Paediatrics are being relocated to other units ‘without resources, without staff and without adequate conditions’, which is creating a situation that, according to the union, is ‘extremely risky for both the children and the professionals’ who care for them. GASTRONOMIA
Villa 42- A hidden eatery in the old town of Casares: {Translation, summary}
– Angelita proudly and emotionally displays photographs from more than six decades ago, when her grandmother decided to open the door of her home to the first American tourists who arrived in Casares. These visitors were amazed by that cave house. Her parents continued to show that corner to anyone who wished to see it. Angelita Fernández today still shares that peculiar space, now converted into a dining room, where the walls are whitewashed rocks. She has done so inspired by what she does best: cooking and always smilingly attending to everyone who enters her abode.
– It is not a restaurant in the usual sense. From outside, it is just another house on Villa Street, that is to say, the street running from the Plaza de España to the castle. Neither signs nor other clues betray that behind that discreet door lies a small gastronomic corner. Only the number 42 identifies this dwelling for those who have previously reserved more than just a lunch, but a gastronomic experience.
– With four tables and a maximum capacity for about fourteen diners, Angelita has transformed the living room of the house where she lives into an intimate space in which she both gives live cooking demonstrations for hotels and prepares a simple menu of local dishes for a small group. “I like to be a little clandestine, so that those who come capture the essence of what this village is,” explains Angelita, who has devoted her entire professional life to hospitality, from the kitchen to the dining room.
– Each day, she prepares a simple menu, priced between 12 and 15 euros. Andalusian recipes are never lacking, nor those of the village. Hot gazpacho- a soup reminiscent of perota but usually served with clams, Casareña black pudding, fried and accompanied by tomato and peppers, or kid goat which tends to increase the price of the menu, are some of the local options Angelita likes to propose. In winter, she may venture to prepare a nearly unknown bacon gazpacho, a simple and humble spoon dish from Casares rescued from the past. Local products are also commonly present, such as Crestellina’s payoyo cheese or the dark bread.
– In summer, many salads appear on her menus, from pipirrana refreshed with water to conventional gazpachos, porras, or bean salad with potatoes. Alongside these may appear fried ‘pescaíto’, as Casares also has a coast and is close to important fish markets such as that of Estepona. Potato omelettes, chicken with almond sauce, or paellas may be other options at almost any time of year. For dessert, Basque-style baked cheesecake or homemade custards, but also the repertoire of homemade sweets made in the village.
– That simple and traditional cuisine is accompanied by wines of good quality-price ratio in a corner especially cool in summer, the temperatures are much lower than outside.

SCAMS
Warning about fraudulent QR Code stickers at electric car charging points (or anywhere else): {Translation, summary}
– Because QR codes can open links automatically, hackers can use them to redirect users to forged websites and thus improve the success rate of their phishing campaigns, and other criminal purposes. And since QR codes can’t be read by humans, users won’t be able to identify malicious codes, which bad actors can use in place of legitimate codes. (Ref: https://www.esecurityplanet.com/threats/qr-code-security-problem/)
– AEDIVE, the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility in Spain, has warned electric vehicle drivers about a rising fraud involving counterfeit stickers on public charging points. These fake stickers, often bearing QR codes or WhatsApp numbers, lure users with offers of free or unrealistically cheap charging, aiming to extract unauthorised payments.
– AEDIVE advises users to only scan QR codes displayed on the charging point’s official screen and to distrust any irregularly affixed stickers, especially those offering suspicious promotions. Legitimate operators do not use WhatsApp for payments.
– The National Cybersecurity Institute also recommends verifying website security (HTTPS and padlock icon) before entering any payment details. Users are encouraged to rely on official apps from recognised companies to find and activate charging points, ensuring safe, reliable transactions and avoiding scams.
– {QR codes are old technology, not secure, and are subject to manipulation for fraudulent purposes. Avoid them whenever possible. QR code info and safe practices from the FBI: https://www.ic3.gov/PSA/2022/PSA220118 -Ed.}
