Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Housing Ministry accepts that Airbnb will remove listings without registration codes and send monthly data for all listed units starting in August: {Translation, summary}
– On Tuesday, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda and Airbnb agreed to identify and remove adverts for tourist flats lacking legal registration codes on Airbnb’s platform.
– From August onwards, Airbnb will provide monthly information regarding these adverts. Listings found with irregular registration will be removed after hosts receive notification and a ten-working-day grace period to amend the issues; if a state registration number is revoked, removal will take place within forty-eight hours of ministry notification. Currently, hosts must provide a valid registration number, preferably the national one; this will soon be replaced by two separate fields for national and regional registration.
– Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, Airbnb’s director-general for Spain, highlighted that this agreement strengthens Airbnb’s commitment to transparency and cooperation with authorities. The single register for tourist rentals, created by Royal Decree 1312/2024, has been in force since 1 July following a six-month transition, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/1028, which regulates short-term furnished leases across Member States. Brussels believes that the amnesty law “does not respond to the general interest, but is actually a political agreement”: {Translation, summary}
– The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) is scrutinising Spain’s contentious Amnesty Law, which pardons numerous key figures involved in the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. Widely criticised, the law appears primarily motivated by a political deal between PSOE and Junts to secure Pedro Sánchez’s investiture, rather than genuine pursuit of the general good. The European Commission condemned the law’s haste and vagueness, noting its two-month application deadline obstructs effective audits of EU financial interests.
– Critics argue the law seriously undermines the principles of separation of powers and equality before the law, by preventing courts from adjudicating ongoing cases and granting impunity to specific political allies, breeding profound distrust. The law’s adoption through urgent procedures limited parliamentary scrutiny, intensifying concerns over democratic legitimacy and judicial independence. Prominent judges and legal bodies denounce it as an unprecedented breach of the rule of law in European democracies. Detractors warn this “self-amnesty” not only erodes trust in Spain’s justice system but also sets a dangerous precedent of political interference, privileging certain actors while leaving others accountable, thus fracturing social cohesion and the rule of law itself. The ‘La Sección Primera de la Audiencia de Sevilla’ Court questions whether the Constitutional Court inappropriately overturned the Supreme Court decision in the ERE case, asks for EU intervention: {Translation, summary}
– {Just to get you up to speed: The ERE case involves embezzlement. It concerns the fraudulent misappropriation of public funds—specifically, tens or hundreds of millions of euros from the Andalusian government’s fund intended to support laid-off workers through Employment Regulation Files (ERE).
– The First Section of the Seville Court of Appeals has questioned whether Spain’s Constitutional Court (6 lib to 4 conservative judges voted along party lines) overstepped its bounds by annulling convictions for the fraudulent financing of Andalusia’s ERE (employment regulation agency), including those of former Socialist presidents Manuel Chaves and José Antonio Griñán, previously upheld by the Supreme Court.
– The Constitutional Court ruled that participation in approving draft budget laws does not constitute an administrative resolution, rejecting prior criminal interpretations of corruption. Concerned that the Constitutional Court has supplanted the Supreme Court’s exclusive authority as highest legal interpreter, the Seville Court has suspended issuing new sentences and referred a preliminary question to the European Court of Justice. This seeks to clarify whether the Constitutional Court’s reconsiderations breach EU law, particularly anti-corruption measures and protection of EU financial interests. The Seville court warns that applying the Constitutional Court’s doctrine risks systemic impunity for corruption, damage that it considers institutionally severe and difficult to repair, undermining Spain’s judicial hierarchy and efforts to combat political corruption impacting EU funds. Diaz freezes the reduction of the working day in the Congress in response to the threat of Junts:
– The legislative process to reduce working hours in Spain has been postponed until after the summer due to stalled negotiations with the Catalan separatist party, Junts. {The Junts hold the 7 votes that keep Sanchez in office, and now they again invoke that advantage.} Junts has maintained its veto, fearing the measure harms Catalonia’s small and medium-sized enterprises and business freedom.
– The Ministry of Labour had hoped to approve the reform by year’s end, as agreed in the PSOE-Sumar coalition, but this now seems unlikely. While the government publicly remains hopeful of reaching a consensus, Junts has demanded more time, stressing the need to protect Catalan SMEs and workers. Junts’ spokesperson has strongly criticised the policy, equating reduced working hours to encouraging laziness, and the negotiations remain deadlocked.
– The Ministry has postponed the parliamentary debate on the full amendment until the next session, aiming to allow further talks. Sources close to communist Vice President Yolanda Díaz {Spain’s version of America’s commie-congress-puppet AOC shown on left, Díaz on the right} acknowledge the possibility of a parliamentary defeat, but are determined to continue defending the reform politically, {because that’s how the people want their tax money paying her gov’t salary spent?…typical commie wasting other people’s money on her personal crusades when she needs to focus on the real problems: immigration, health, infrastructure, inflation. Stuff that affects everybody. -Ed.}. Constitutional Court Here We Come- The Supreme Court dismisses investigating Bolaños for the “Begoña Gómez case” due to the ‘complete absence’ of evidence: {Translation, summary}
– The Supreme Court has dismissed Judge Juan Carlos Peinado’s request to investigate Minister Félix Bolaños {pic} for alleged embezzlement and false testimony concerning the appointment of Cristina Álvarez as adviser to the Prime Minister’s wife, Begoña Gómez. The Court cited a complete lack of credible evidence linking Bolaños to any wrongdoing and emphasised that occupying public office alone cannot imply awareness or intent in misuse of public funds. The false testimony allegation was also rejected, as no final judicial decision has established contradictory testimonies as factually false. The Court criticised Peinado’s approach, including his failure to consult the Prosecutor’s Office beforehand, a key procedural step.
– Given the political sensitivity of the case and the involvement of high-level officials, this rejection does not mark the end of the dispute. The party seeking to prosecute Bolaños can escalate the matter to the Spain’s Constitutional Court, or even European Union’s legal oversight bodies, potentially invoking principles concerning judicial independence and rights to effective investigation when domestic courts are perceived as obstructive. Such a move would align with recent patterns in politically charged cases in Spain where affected parties seek EU intervention. Therefore, it is likely the matter will continue beyond Spain’s Supreme Court, either politically or legally, possibly reaching the EU courts in pursuit of further scrutiny or redress. ANDALUCÍA

The Constitutional Court admits appeals from six autonomous communities, including Andalucia, against the reception of migrant children: {Translation}
– The Plenary of the Constitutional Court has accepted for processing the appeals submitted by six autonomous communities against the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors, as published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). The admitted appeals were those filed by the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla y León, all governed by the People’s Party, along with Castilla-La Mancha, whose government is led by the Socialist Emiliano García-Page.
– The six communities submitted constitutional appeals against Royal Decree-Law 2/2025, of 18 March, which approves urgent measures to guarantee the best interests of childhood and adolescence in extraordinary migratory contingency situations. In the cases of the Balearic Islands and Castilla-La Mancha, the validation agreement for the same Royal Decree-Law, adopted by the Congress of Deputies on 10 April 2025, has also been appealed.
– The Royal Decree-Law was approved on 18 March, despite votes against by the PP and Vox parties, following months of negotiations with the autonomous communities. The measure obliges autonomous communities to collectively accommodate minors currently overcrowding centres in the Canary Islands. The Government expects to begin transfers this summer, but no date has yet been set.
– Catalonia and the Basque Country are not obliged to accept further unaccompanied minor migrants in the 2025 relocation under disputed arrangements with the Sanchez administration, the focus of this appeal. MALAGA PROVINCE

Temps rise on coast as we approach the weekend: {Translation, summary}
– This week, the Costa del Sol and Costa Oriental regions of Málaga are experiencing persistent high temperatures, though they are spared the most extreme inland heat. Along the coast, including Málaga city and Marbella, maximum temperatures will hover around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius, but elevated humidity levels of 85 to 90 per cent will create an uncomfortable, sultry environment.
– From Friday onwards, temperatures are predicted to climb sharply, as the typical local terral wind may cause a swift rise along the coastline, especially in Málaga, Vélez-Málaga, and key Costa del Sol areas. By Friday, Málaga city could reach 37 degrees, and Marbella and Vélez-Málaga up to 36. While other parts of Andalucía begin to cool, coastal areas are expected to see their hottest days of the week, with little relief overnight. The humidity and heat are likely to create significant discomfort for residents and tourists alike. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/que-dia-mas-calor-malaga_0_2004379319.html

MURCIA

Riots Update- More than 130 riot police mobilised in Torre Pacheco for the first of three days of protests against immigrants: {Translation, summary}
– Following an assault on a 68-year-old resident in Torre Pacheco, Murcia, far-right groups announced three days of protests from 15 July. In response, the Civil Guard deployed over 130 riot police alongside local officers to prevent disorder. The security operation has resulted in thirteen arrests, including suspects involved in the original assault and others linked to racially motivated violence, such as attacks on immigrant-owned businesses. {I have seen unverified online videos of a Torre Pacheco kabab shop being trashed. -Ed.}
– The far-right factions known as ‘Deport Them Now UE’ openly called for a violent “hunt” of immigrants, exploiting the initial attack to incite hatred. Their local leader was arrested in Mataró for inciting hate crimes, and authorities have shut down the group’s Telegram channels.
– Significantly, organized far-right agitators only appeared on the scene after the immediate aggressive response by locals to the initial attack on a Spanish neighbour by North Africans; this then ignited the conflict and attracted the outsiders. Local authorities and residents emphasise the decades of peaceful coexistence between native citizens and immigrants, only now to have tensions exacerbated by extremist outsiders. {I don’t buy it. Maybe they should ask someone under 40 about that peaceful coexistence in the streets of Murcia? Ref 2. There have been community gangs in every town and city in Spain since before Franco arrived, probably brought together by times of famine, when one needed a network to rely on for support just to survive. It was established by the early 1880s that these groups exist, Ref 1. What do gangs do? They defend their territory from outsiders. Thus this “tension” is not anything new. Waves of outsiders have arrived in Spain throughout history. What is new are the levels of violence and criminal organization today’s gangs exhibit. -Ed. Ref 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mano_Negra_affair  & Ref 2: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13691457.2024.2352001#abstract}
– The Government and local officials have condemned hateful rhetoric, particularly from the Vox party, blaming it for fuelling tensions. The Murcia Prosecutor’s Office is investigating whether public comments by Vox’s regional leader contributed to the unrest.
– The deployment of police forces and arrests have aimed to restore order, alongside efforts to prevent further mobilisation by extremist groups calling for “neighbourhood patrols” during the protests. Vandals sentenced to more than 4 years for felling England’s beloved Sycamore Gap tree:
– Two vandals who cut down England’s beloved 150 year old Sycamore Gap tree were sentenced Tuesday to more than four years in prison for damaging the country’s natural heritage and for the widespread outrage and distress it caused.
– Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers set out on a dark and stormy night in 2023 to carry out what a prosecutor called a “moronic mission,” and toppled the majestic sycamore onto Hadrian’s Wall. Sarah Dodd, a lawyer specializing in tree law, said it was the first time in the U.K. that someone had been sentenced to prison for illegally felling a tree. Cloudflare Starts Blocking Pirate Sites From UK Users – That’s a Pretty Big Deal:
– Cloudflare has become the first internet intermediary, beyond local residential ISPs, to block access to pirate sites {and associated apps} in the UK. Users attempting to access certain pirate sites are greeted with ‘Error 451 – Unavailable for Legal Reasons’. In theory, ISP blocking should prevent UK users from even seeing this notice, but a combination of Cloudflare’s blocking mechanism and choices made by some VPN users results in a piracy dead end.
– In the latest wave of blocking that seems to have come into force yesterday, close to 200 UK pirate domains were added to one of the longest pirate site blocking lists in the world. The big change is the unexpected involvement of Cloudflare, which for some users attempting to access the domains added yesterday, displays the notice seen below: Full article: https://torrentfreak.com/cloudflare-starts-blocking-pirate-sites-for-uk-users-thats-a-pretty-big-deal-250715/
