SPAIN

What you hiding, Sneaky Pete? Sánchez refuses to reveal hundreds of names of his hand-picked staff to Ethics violation investigators: {Translation, summary}
– Corruption scandals surrounding Pedro Sánchez’s Government and the PSOE expose a government that has exceeded its predecessors in questionable practices, despite promises to end them. However, the information released represents only a fraction of the problem, as nepotism and revolving doors between government and private companies remain extensive but lacking transparency.
– The investigative portal Civio examined hundreds of advisers and temporary personnel who moved between ministries and companies linked to government activity. Civio criticises the Government’s refusal to disclose but a small fraction of the names, citing that several PSOE ministries have provided no information at all, while among disclosed names most are communications advisers, party affiliates, or relatives of politicians.
– According to official statistics, nearly 800 temporary staff worked across various ministries in 2023, yet only around 200 names were released, suggesting more than 570 politically appointed figures remain hidden. Cases such as the daughter of former PSC secretary Pere Navarro, and relatives of former ministers like Alberto Garzón, highlight the problem. Civio stresses that publication of all temporary staff names is absent from Sánchez’s new anti-corruption plan, with over 2,600 appointments since 2010 remaining partially unknown.
– Corruption scandals surrounding Pedro Sánchez’s Government reveal that, despite promises to end such practices, insider favouritism and reward appointments persist, with little personnel transparency. Civio’s investigation shows that many ministries, mainly PSOE-led, refuse to disclose the names of politically appointed temporary staff, obscuring hundreds of appointments since 2010. ANDALUCÍA

Even the lefty main stream media admits socialist PSOE is sinking in Andalucia, not an easy task considering how the current conservative PP leaders are mucking things up: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Barometer by Centra reveals a historic collapse in PSOE support, largely attributed to corruption scandals involving José Luis Ábalos and Santos Cerdán, while the PP maintains a commanding lead.
– If elections were held now, the conservative PP would secure 41.7% of votes and an absolute majority with 55 to 57 seats, suffering minimal losses since 2022.
– In contrast, the PSOE would record its worst result ever in Andalusia with only 19.8%, translating into 24 to 26 seats, down from 30 in the last election.
– Other parties like Vox, Por Andalucía/Sumar, and Adelante Andalucía would see modest gains. Despite this, Juanma Moreno and María Jesús Montero enjoy higher personal approval ratings than their parties.
– Nationally, Andalusians largely view the political situation pessimistically, favouring Alberto Núñez Feijóo as prime minister. The Barometer also highlights corruption as the top concern in Spain, while unemployment and healthcare are priorities in Andalusia. AXARQUÍA

The terral arrives this Friday at the Axarquía: yellow alert for temps above 36C, La Viñuela may reach 40C: {Translation, summary}
– From this Friday onwards, the terral, a very dry northwesterly wind responsible for the highest temperatures in the region, will take hold. This warm spell could last until next Monday, the 21st of July, although on some days it might alternate along parts of the coast with sea breezes or westerly winds.
– With the terral comes the first yellow warning for high temperatures this summer in Axarquía. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for the region on Friday for maximum temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius, in force from 1 pm until 9 pm. Nevertheless, the worst conditions in the province are expected on the Costa del Sol and in the Guadalhorce Valley, areas under an orange warning for maximum temperatures of 39 degrees Celsius.
– Meteorology forecasts for Friday in the province partly cloudy or clear skies, with intervals of high clouds, and some morning low cloud periods along the coast. Minimum temperatures will remain mostly unchanged, while maximum temperatures will rise along the coast. Winds will be light and variable, shifting to the northwest with moderate intervals in the afternoon, and occasionally strong westerly winds along the coast.
**FRIDAY’S PROJECTED HIGH TEMPS**
– The highest temperatures in Axarquía will occur inland, although the terral is expected to reach parts of the coast during the afternoon. Thus, the maximum temperature is anticipated in La Viñuela at 40 degrees Celsius.
– Temperatures of 39 degrees are forecast for Benamargosa, Periana, Alcaucín and Riogordo; 38 degrees in Canillas de Aceituno, Almáchar, El Borge, Cútar and Totalán; 37 degrees in Rincón de la Victoria, Benamocarra, Comares, Iznate, Moclinejo and Colmenar; 36 degrees in Vélez-Málaga and Algarrobo; 35 degrees in Torrox, Cómpeta and Frigiliana; 34 degrees in Alfarnate; and 33 degrees in Nerja.
– The weekend will maintain stable conditions and clear skies. Winds will predominantly come from the northwest or west, with moderate westerly winds along the coast. The terral is likely to cause a drop in sea temperatures. This is because this wind encourages the phenomenon known as upwelling: the warmer surface waters move out to sea, leading to the rise of colder, nutrient-rich currents. It is a kind of natural reset of the water.
**WEEKEND**
– For Saturday, a slight drop in temperatures is expected in Axarquía. For now, AEMET has not issued any warnings for high temperatures in the region on this day. Nonetheless, 39 degrees is still expected in La Viñuela, 38 degrees in Benamargosa, and 37 degrees in Canillas de Aceituno or Alcaucín, among the prominent values.
– On Sunday, temperatures are forecast to rise again, reaching values similar to those predicted for Friday, with even higher maximums at points along the western coast of the region, though lower in the upper Axarquía. Thus, 40 degrees would return to La Viñuela; 39 degrees to Benamargosa and Alcaucín; and 38 degrees to Rincón de la Victoria, Periana, Canillas de Aceituno, Almáchar and El Borge.
– The following week would begin with temperatures very similar to those on Sunday. From Tuesday onwards, a downward trend in temperatures is expected due to the return of the levante and sea breezes, although humidity levels would rise, resulting in a greater sensation of sultriness. The infanta Sofía will continue her studies outside of Spain: {Translation, summary}

Her studies will take place successively in Lisbon, Paris and Berlin, commencing this September.
– This choice follows her expressed wish to study abroad, with her parents, the King and Queen of Spain, setting conditions that her education remain close enough to allow her to attend institutional duties and prove useful to the Crown. As Sofía is not heir to the throne, she will have responsibilities different from those of her elder sister, Princess Leonor.

RELIGION

A CT scan prior to the restoration of the Virgin of Fatima discovers a capsule inside: {Translation, summary}
– The statue of the Virgin of Fátima venerated in Málaga is to be restored on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of its arrival in the city. As a preliminary step, a computed axial tomography scan was performed to assess its state of preservation and ensure an intervention respectful of its original structure. The examination revealed an unexpected discovery: a capsule concealed within the image…which may contain a message, document, or or other items of interest and intrigue.
– The study was conducted by the Diagnostic Imaging Unit team at HM Málaga, using high-resolution technology that allows the internal structure to be analysed without the need for physical intervention in the statue. The three-dimensional images are currently being evaluated by experts, and will be essential in planning the restoration process.
– The statue was made in the 1940s by the Portuguese sculptor José Ferreira Thedim, the very artist who created the original statue of the Virgin of Fátima, venerated since 1920 in the Portuguese sanctuary. The Málaga replica bears an official seal of authenticity certifying its provenance and high heritage value.
– During the 1940s, only twelve official replicas of the Virgin of Fátima were made to travel the world on evangelical missions. After fulfilling their purpose, all returned to the Portuguese sanctuary, save for the one that arrived in Málaga. By express wish of the then Bishop Ángel Herrera Oria, the image remained in the city, where it is commonly known as “la Peregrina”. – Connie Francis, the wholesome pop star of the 1950s and ‘60s whose hits included “Pretty Little Baby” and “Who’s Sorry Now?” – the latter would serve as an ironic title for a personal life filled with heartbreak and tragedy – has died at age 87.
– Radio DJ Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow, a longtime friend, told The Associated Press that she died Wednesday at a hospital in Florida, the state where she had lived for years. Morrow did not cite a specific cause of death, but Francis had posted on social media earlier this month that she had been hospitalized with “extreme pain.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/connie-francis-died-87-singer-pretty-little-baby-785646a658c66d61f4263eeb5b5d5d42 & Video Link
