SPAIN
Sánchez is not representing the majority of the people, he is pushing an agenda, and he’s proud of it- Sánchez defends a progressive front in Chile against a right wing that has ‘succumbed to the discourse of the far right’: {Translation, summary}
– Pedro Sánchez, speaking at a summit hosted by Chilean President Gabriel Boric, urged progressive leaders to unite against the rising tide of far-right reactionaries, noting that the traditional right has surrendered to their rhetoric. He declared, “It falls to us, to governments led by progressive forces, to spearhead that response,” stressing the need to stand firm even if alone.
– The gathering, including leaders from Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay, committed to defending democracy which they see under threat from “a coalition of hatred and lies.” Sánchez outlined three priorities: strengthening democratic institutions and multilateralism; combating disinformation through democratic digital governance; and reducing inequality, which he warned is “the breeding ground where the virus of extremism and polarisation grows.” In this respect, “Spain has proposed promoting democratic digital governance, collaborating to ensure that algorithms neither manipulate our opinions nor weaken social cohesion and coexistence.” {Referring to the program the Spanish socialists want to pass regarding censoring the Internet and blocking funding for news sources they do not approve of. -Ed.}
– He warned that the far right “feeds on nostalgia for a past that never existed,” and urged advancing policies that furnish certainty and hope for future generations. Spain plans to host a similar meeting next year to continue this collaborative effort. AXARQUÍA
New delay in the preliminary design of the desalination plant of the Axarquia, now scheduled for September: {Translation, summary}
– The preliminary project for the desalination plant in Axarquía, essential for ensuring water supply, faces further delay until at least September, with planning progressing amid disagreements between the Junta of Andalusia and the State regarding overdue investments. The plant will be located at Río Seco, north of the motorway, and is designed initially to deliver 25 cubic hectometres of water annually for both human and agricultural use, potentially doubling if needed.
– The Mancomunidad and irrigation bodies concentrate on technical preparations, including energy supply and water storage infrastructure. Following completion, the plan will be submitted to the State Society ACUAMED for development. Meanwhile, Andalusian Government’s delegate for Málaga calls upon the State to honour outstanding investments in hydraulic works, noting that projects worth two billion euros remain unexecuted locally, despite regional spending exceeding four hundred million euros combating drought.

COSTA DEL SOL
Active wildfire forces closure of A-377 between Casares and Manilva on the Costa del Sol:
UPDATE 18:22- traffic on all the roads has already been restored.
– Earlier this Monday afternoon a wildfire broke out in the municipality of Casares, which is still active, specifically in the area of La Gamona, affecting the A-377 towards Manilva on the Costa del Sol, forcing it to be closed as the fire is burning on both sides of the road.
– The fire broke out at around 3.20pm on one side of the A-7056 road, although the strong wind blowing in the area caused the flames to engulf the road itself and the smoke made driving conditions difficult.

Why is the Costa del Sol experiencing its first decline in tourism since the Covid-19 pandemic? Simple answer. It’s no longer a “budget” destination. Tourists, especially from northern Spain, reject wild price hikes:
– It’s a fact: the Costa del Sol is receiving fewer tourists this year. The figures collated until May are red and this is the last month for which official data has been made available so far. Even international tourism has not been able to combat the cooling of the national sector and the pace of arrivals to this popular destination has slowed down.
– The holiday rental sector has experienced a drop of 2.2% in the first half of the year, more pronounced and consistent since March, when the lowest figure was recorded – 57%. Given that this is tourism’s first decline since the Covid-19 pandemic, the current situation is causing concern.
– The strong summer months do not offer relief, as the downward trend continues to appear in forecasts. This July, bookings have dropped by 11.7% compared to the same month last year. NERJA
Two years and still no public access to River Chíllar hiking route in Nerja:
– Nerja town hall says that the resolution of August 2023 prohibiting access to hikers will remain in force for now and the Junta de Andalucía, which is responsible for the area, is still waiting for a private company to manage access to the site. August 8 will mark the second anniversary of the municipal decree closing access to the middle and upper areas of the River Chíllar after years of overcrowding, accidents, fires and uncontrolled access to the beauty spot.
– The Junta de Andalucía has been looking for bids from private companies to take over control of the access and general management of the site. However, it rejected all three bids submitted in March by different companies. – Specifically, on Friday, 25th July, the artist Toñi Miranda will perform, offering a concert of Spanish song.
– On Thursday, 7th August, it will be the turn of Hi Lo Colorao, with acoustic pop and rock covers. The performances will be at 10:00 p.m.
– The councillor highlighted the importance of providing such emblematic places in our town, such as Burriana, with these types of activities, and invited everyone to participate in them. BENALMÁDENA
At an altitude exceeding eight hundred metres, above the horizon of Benalmádena, Monte Calamorro once again becomes a privileged site to admire the heavens: {Translation, summary}
– At over eight hundred metres above sea level on Monte Calamorro, near Benalmádena, the much-celebrated summer Open-Air Planetarium returns, offering a unique astronomical experience under the clear Malagueño skies.
– From 21st July to 31st August, visitors ascending via the Benalmádena Cable Car may attend night-time astronomy sessions for a small fee, learning to identify stars, constellations, and celestial bodies through expert guidance paired with mythological insights. Monte Calamorro’s exceptional altitude and minimal light pollution make it an ideal vantage point for stargazing, complemented by panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast and mountainous landscapes.
– Since opening in 2000, the cable car has provided spectacular ascents from Arroyo de la Miel to the summit, offering vistas stretching even to the African coast on clear days. This summer programme blends natural beauty with scientific education, enriching visitors’ cultural and sensory experience on the Costa del Sol. UKRAINE WAR
Russia attacks a metro station in Kiev, where they took refuge hundreds of people, and other sites: {Translation, summary}
– Russia launched its largest drone and missile assault on Ukraine since the war’s inception, striking Kiev’s Lukianivska metro station where civilians sheltered. The attack caused fires, injuries, and at least one death, with significant damage to public and commercial properties. Residents described the scene as infernal due to smoke and destruction beneath the city.
– The western city of Ivano-Frankivsk also endured its most severe bombardment since the 2022 invasion, with casualties reported in nearby villages, while explosions occurred in Kharkiv.
– This escalation followed Ukrainian President Zelensky’s call for renewed peace talks with Moscow; yet, previous negotiations in Istanbul have yielded little progress beyond prisoner swaps and body repatriations. Despite US pressure for a settlement, Kremlin spokesmen insisted that Moscow’s territorial and political demands remain steadfast. Concurrently, the European Union imposed fresh sanctions aimed at Russian financial and energy sectors, seeking to curtail the Kremlin’s war funding. American refugees- Ellen DeGeneres says Donald Trump is the reason she moved to U.K., Rosie O’Donnell already relocated to Ireland:
– Ellen DeGeneres confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump is the reason she left the United States and moved to the U.K.
– In her first public appearance since leaving the U.S. last year, DeGeneres {pic, left}, 67, was asked at a conversation event if the reports that she moved to the U.K. because of Trump, 79, were correct and she simply said, “Yes.” “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” DeGeneres told broadcaster Richard Bacon in Cheltenham, England, on Sunday. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
– DeGeneres had nothing but good things to say about her new home in the aristocratic Cotswolds region, telling Bacon that life “is just better” in the U.K.
– In March, comedian and actor Rosie O’Donnell {pic, right} revealed that she’s no longer living in the United States and confirmed that she moved to Ireland. “Moved here on January 15 and it’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful,” O’Donnell said. O’Donnell, 63, said she’s currently in the process of getting her Irish citizenship, and that she has Irish grandparents. RECALLS
Mercedes-Benz issues a recall for 223,000 vehicles due to an airbag fault, these models affected: {Translation}
– The German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for 223,000 vehicles worldwide owing to a problem with the airbag, German media reported on Monday.
– Mercedes-Benz stated that the recall concerns the Viano multi-purpose vehicle and the Vito van, produced between December 2002 and February 2006. The German car maker has found that, upon airbag deployment in the event of an accident, the gas generator may explode. In such circumstances, the airbag fails to provide any restraint effect and there is a risk of injury to passengers from fragments of the gas generator that detach. Chinese Scientists Invent System for Extracting Oxygen, Water and Rocket Fuel From Moon Dust:
– As detailed in a new paper published today in the journal Joule, the team found that their proposed “photothermal strategy” – essentially converting light into heat – could effectively convert carbon dioxide from extracted water into carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and oxygen gas, a “potential route for sustaining human life on the Moon and enabling long-term extra-terrestrial exploration.”
– “The sustainable utilization of local resources is essential for long-term human survival on the Moon and beyond,” the researchers write, pointing out that bringing water from Earth is cost-prohibitive at roughly $83,000 per gallon.
– “We never fully imagined the ‘magic’ that the lunar soil possessed,” said Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen professor and co-author Lu Wang in a statement.
While plenty of questions remain about our future efforts to harness local resources on the surface of the Moon, it’s a glimmer of hope that humanity could indeed establish a more permanent and potentially sustainable presence there.
– While their lab-based experiments turned out to be a success, the actual lunar surface will likely prove a far more challenging place to extract and convert lunar water. As the paper points out, radiation, low gravity, and extreme temperature fluctuations could complicate matters significantly. TRAVEL
LAST DAYS TO APPLY- Seniors of Andalusia have until 23rd July to apply for places in the Imserso programme: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian pensioners with incomes not exceeding 565 euros have until 23rd July to apply for 7,447 subsidised places through the Imserso travel programme, permitting travel at a fixed cost of 50 euros, irrespective of destination, with Imserso covering the balance.
– The Spanish Government emphasises this measure as part of its commitment to widening access to active ageing for lower-income seniors on equal terms with their peers.
– This season also introduces the ability to travel with pets on selected coastal routes, a welcome concession recognising the companionship these animals provide.
– In 2025, the programme marks its fortieth year, having expanded from 16,000 to nearly 880,000 places, serving over 4.6 million participants. Trips encompass peninsular and island coastal destinations, cultural sites, provincial capitals, and autonomous cities, with durations from four to ten days, ensuring diverse opportunities for leisure and socialisation among the elderly.
