Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Most vegetarians in Spain are women, have careers, and live alone: {Translation, first 4 paragraphs}
– A study conducted by the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona—August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (Idibaps) and the Barcelona Esquerra Primary Health Care Consortium (Capsbe) hath revealed that the majority of vegetarians in Spain are young women with university education and who do not share their household with another person.
– Drawing upon data from more than 22,000 individuals, it reveals that 0.56 per cent of the adult population in Spain is vegetarian, adhering to a diet notably healthier than persons of similar sociodemographic profile who are not vegetarians, reports Idibaps in a statement this Monday.
– Published in ‘Public Health Nutrition,’ the study shows that the regions with the highest prevalence of vegetarians are Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Basque Country, Navarre, and the Canary Islands, with up to twelve point two vegetarians per thousand inhabitants, compared to southern Spain with fewer than two per thousand.
– The profile of those who affirm never to consume meat nor animal-derived products presents a “very characteristic” pattern: sixty-nine per cent are women, forty-two per cent possess university education, and seventy-one per cent live alone. These findings concur with trends observed in other European countries, where vegetarian diets are likewise more common among young women with a high level of education. The PP speaks of a “total defeat” for the government after the anti-blackout decree was defeated in a watered-down plenary session: {Translation, summary}
– The Popular Party regards the Government’s defeat on Tuesday’s with the rejection of the anti-blackout decree law as a complete political failure. Though the Government passed other votes, the crucial decree to reinforce the electrical system was struck down by the opposition and dissenting partners, signalling cracks in governmental support on a subject of universal interest. The PP criticised the decree as inadequate and refused to “rescue” Prime Minister Sánchez, highlighting other failures such as stalled debates on work hours reduction, and judicial reform as well.
– They contend Sánchez lacks the parliamentary backing to govern and call for immediate elections, citing corruption scandals and judicial inquiries involving top PSOE figures and related officials. This parliamentary setback, the PP states, marks the end of the Government’s grace period and a crisis of legitimacy requiring urgent resolution. Homeless man sleeping on the street in Malaga set on fire in brutal attack: {Translation}

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Chapi Street, at the corner of Héroe de Sostoa, in the Carretera de Cádiz district, about 500 meters from the María Zambrano train station, an area where vulnerable people who sleep on the street often gather.

He is out of danger, although he has injuries to his back as a result of the flames.

Stratus, the new, more contagious variant of COVID-19 being monitored by the WHO, is spreading throughout Spain and the world: {Translation, summary}
– The WHO has been monitoring the XFG or Stratus subvariant of SARS-CoV-2 since June. Though it does not appear to cause more severe illness than other strains, it is more transmissible and rapidly spreading, especially in India and Spain. Stratus is a recombinant variant containing genetic material from two other strains and possesses four significant mutations in its spike protein, aiding immune evasion and possibly reducing antibody effectiveness by up to fifty per cent. The variant’s expanding presence suggests it may soon supplant the previously dominant Nimbus variant. See up to 25 ‘shooting stars’ an hour as Southern Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornid meteor showers peak:
– Two meteor showers will peak together on the night of July 29-30, with the moon out of the way just in time for about 25 shooting stars per hour to be seen in dark skies.
– The highlight will be the Southern Delta Aquariids, the stronger of the two showers, with expected rates of up to 20 meteors per hour at the shower’s peak. Active from July 18 to Aug. 12, the Southern Delta Aquariids are known for their faint, lingering trails. However, the peak of the Southern Delta Aquariids is broad. According to the American Meteor Society, the meteor shower produces good rates for a week centered on the peak night, so it will be worth looking between July 24 and July 31. As the name suggests, the Southern Delta Aquariids are best seen from the Southern Hemisphere. That’s because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Aquarius, which is low on the southern horizon as viewed from the Northern Hemisphere.
– The second meteor shower to peak overnight on July 29-30 is the Alpha Capricornids, which will add about five to 10 meteors per hour. Active from July 7 to Aug. 15, the shower’s radiant point is the constellation Capricornus, which is alongside Aquarius in the night sky. That will make shooting stars from the two meteor showers hard to tell apart, but the Alpha Capricornids tend to be particularly bright, slow-moving and colourful. TRAVEL
Spain Train Crisis, this time flooded tunnels on Malaga-Madrid line: {Translation, summary}
– A recent water leakage in the tunnel near Valle de Abdalajís on the Málaga–Madrid high-speed rail line flooded one track, forcing all trains to use a single line and causing minor delays affecting Renfe and private operators. The leak stems from long-standing aquifer damage dating back to 2005, when tunnel construction pierced the water source, leaving the village reliant on water delivered by tankers. Adif attributes the problem to hydrostatic pressure and a rockfall that does not endanger the tunnel’s structure but has yet to detail repair plans.
– The mayor voices concern over apparent maintenance failings resulting in submersed tracks. Engineers suggest the issue arises partly from recent rains after drought, as fluctuating aquifer levels exert pressure on weakened tunnel walls. This incident forms part of a series of recent faults on the line, including signal and power failures causing delays, prompting Adif to undertake reinforcement works. Groups of wild boars cool off on the beaches of Malaga to escape the heat: {Translation}
– It is increasingly common to see wild boars in urban areas, whether in shopping centers, on roads or paths, or in gardens. The truth is that these animals no longer live in the mountains and, with no natural predators, they have expanded their usual habitats. Added to this is the fact that drought is making it increasingly difficult for them to find water and food.
– As a result, it is becoming more and more common to see them walking around like any other animal. This is precisely what happened on one of the beaches in Malaga, where a herd of wild boars was seen in the water taking a dip to escape the heat.
– The incident took place on Cala de Mijas beach, where, under the watchful gaze of bathers, two wild boars and their two young decided to stroll freely along the sand.
– In addition to this scene, what is striking is that exactly the same thing happened about six kilometres away, on Calahonda beach. There, two wild boars also surprised bathers after they dug their snouts into the shore in search of food. Fortunately, in neither case were any injuries or damage reported.
– According to estimates by the Andalusian Regional Government’s Department of Sustainability, there are around 22,000 wild boars in the entire province of Malaga, and their overpopulation is due to the fact that there are no wolves in the province. It should also be noted that hunting is not sufficient to balance the population of this animal, which reproduces rapidly. A lawyer warns about a method used by squatters in Spain to capture houses- “The police can’t evict them.”: {Translation, summary}
– Illegal occupation is a pressing issue in Spain, complicated by lenient laws and protracted judicial processes. Lawyer Miguel Ángel Mejías highlights a tactic called ‘the pizza trick’. Squatters place food orders to be delivered to the intended target property prior to actual entry, collecting the delivery and keeping receipts as false proof of residence, even taking selfies with the delivery people. When owners contact police, these documents and photos, combined with forged leases, prevent immediate eviction, forcing lengthy legal action. To combat this, Mejías advises installing security cameras, acting swiftly on suspicion, and maintaining proof that the property was not rented {I have no idea how you are supposed to prove this last item. Proving a negative is tricky business. -Ed.}. Such measures aim to reduce opportunities for squatters to exploit legal loopholes, assisting homeowners in safeguarding their properties against unlawful occupation.
