SPAIN

Sánchez’s inner circle faces accusations of embezzlement of EU funds:
– The Spanish government faces serious allegations of misusing €21 million in EU funds through corrupt contracts linked to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s close allies, currently under judicial investigation. Senior PSOE figures including Santos Cerdán, former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, and aide Koldo García allegedly arranged rigged public contracts for preferred companies in exchange for kickbacks.
– These contracts were financed through the EU’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, part of the Next Generation EU programme. Companies such as Obras Públicas y Regadíos and Servinabar are implicated, alongside Spain’s largest EU fund recipient, the railway operator ADIF. While investigations continue, it is unclear whether EU funds were directly diverted.
– The European Commission monitors the case closely and warns that proven misallocation will prompt corrective action under EU anti-corruption rules. Spain is the second-largest beneficiary of post-pandemic recovery funding, having received nearly €48 billion in grants and loans, making these allegations a significant threat to its economic recovery and the credibility of the government. Any losses would be devastating. Full article: https://www.euractiv.com/section/politics/news/sanchezs-inner-circle-faces-accusations-of-embezzlement-of-eu-funds/

Sánchez promises to present Budget this year and relies on EU recovery funds to compensate for 2 years of delayed budgets, and even these are being lost due to his mismanagement: {DigameXtra exclusive}
– Since the July 2023 election, the Spanish coalition Government under Pedro Sánchez, formed by PSOE and Sumar, has suffered significant mismanagement, notably failing to present a single budget proposal in two years, a critical lapse unprecedented in recent legislatures. Sánchez now promises to fulfil this constitutional duty in 2026 by producing a new budget, yet the Government remains deeply weakened by political fragmentation and instability. He has blatantly ruled out early elections, even though failure to pass the Budget traditionally signals the end of a government’s mandate, a precedent Sánchez himself accepted in 2019.
– The administration’s weakness is further exposed by its dependency on separatist parties, whose demands and opposition have effectively blackmailed the Government, forcing Sánchez into concessions and political compromises just to secure minimal legislative progress. His readiness to meet figures like Carles Puigdemont to negotiate underlines this precarious reliance.
– Key legislation, including measures such as the anti-blackout royal decree law, has been blocked by separatist allies alongside opposition parties, highlighting fragmentation and dysfunction. The Government has also failed to advance major reforms, resulting in serious financial consequences; the European Commission withheld over a billion euros in Recovery Plan funds due to unmet conditions related to taxation and public sector employment reforms.
– Meanwhile, Sánchez’s administration is mired in corruption scandals implicating senior party members, which have been conspicuously omitted from official evaluations. The ongoing political deadlock and concessions to separatists undermine the coalition’s credibility and cast doubt on its capacity to govern effectively or win a new election without ever more concessions to the blackmailers.
– Furthermore, Sánchez’s government has mismanaged the crucial Next Generation EU Recovery funds intended to revive Spain’s economy post-pandemic. Allegations persist that some of these vital funds have been diverted or misused to prop up Sánchez’s faltering administration rather than support genuine recovery efforts. This strategic misappropriation coupled with political compromises to separatist parties has not only deepened Spain’s economic challenges but also weakened the government’s credibility domestically and within the EU.
– Sánchez, in his socialist dreamland, left no room for defeatism in his speech. He presented Spain as “one of the best-functioning countries in Europe and the world” and his government as a guarantee that the “double regression” that, he argued, the PP and Vox coalition represents in various areas, such as historical memory, the advancement of rights, and the environment, will not be imposed. “We have to earn trust every day, but the most important thing is the attitude of humility, openness, ability to negotiate, and putting oneself in the other’s shoes that the government has had,” he argued, “and that the opposition does not have, as it can only reach agreements with one group, which is Vox.” – {PP + VOX is a majority of the voters, thus Sanchez admits he caters to a minority special interest and ignores the majority. This is commonly known as a failed gov’t, or even socialist tyranny. -Ed.}

Abascal charges Sánchez for boasting about security- He is the “one responsible” for the “horror” in the streets: {Translation}
– On Monday, Vox leader Santiago Abascal pointed to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as the “main person responsible” for the ‘horror’ that, in his opinion, is experienced “every day” on the streets of Spain. He did so after the head of the executive boasted about the country’s security levels.
– During his review of the political year on Monday in Moncloa, Sánchez highlighted Spain’s situation in various areas. “We have a first-class healthcare system, a vibrant productive fabric that offers unique public services and public goods, and the safest streets, I’m not going to say in the world, but almost,” Sánchez fantasized out loud.
– “He is primarily responsible for the horror that is repeated on every street in Spain. Every day,” Abascal replied via his ‘X’ account, where he once again linked immigration and insecurity. He complained that the president “has not said a single word about the women who have been raped in recent weeks” and has not even mentioned “the girl burned alive by a savage who recently arrived on a boat.” Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/nacional/noticia-abascal-carga-contra-sanchez-presumir-seguridad-principal-responsable-horror-calles-20250728163811.html

The Government approves on Tuesday to extend parental leave to 17 weeks and pay part of the care leave: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Government will approve an historic extension to parental leave, increasing childbirth leave from 16 to 17 weeks and introducing two fully paid weeks of child care leave until the child turns eight, with retroactive application from August 2024. Single-parent families, mostly mother-headed, will benefit from 32 weeks of leave, with four weeks flexible until the child is eight years old. This reform results from an agreement between PSOE and Sumar within the coalition Government, pressed by legal obligations and to avoid escalating fines from the European Union, which currently charges Spain 9,000 euros daily, rising to 43,000 euros from 1 August. The measures aim to strengthen the Welfare State and support families, particularly recognising unpaid leaves and lactation rights. Vice-President Yolanda Díaz emphasised that delaying approval would waste public funds and be irresponsible, while reaffirming the Government’s commitment to expanding social rights amidst ongoing challenges. ANDALUCÍA

Temperatures rise in Andalusia with maximums of up to 40 degrees: {Translation}
– Andalucía will once again experience a rise in temperatures this week, though only a mild and moderate increase. Temperatures will be the main factor to monitor. In the Guadalquivir Valley, highs are expected between 38 and 40 degrees throughout the week, with yellow and even occasional orange heat warnings in the area.
– Night-time lows will offer no relief, according to Juan de Dios del Pino, the regional delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), as they will not fall below 20ºC. Between Wednesday and Friday, temperatures could reach 23ºC, promising tropical nights over wide areas of the community.
– Del Pino told Europa Press that although the week will be warm and somewhat hotter than the previous one, no extreme temperatures are anticipated. The heat will be significant, especially in southern and western Andalucía, yet within the usual range for this time of year.
– Andalucía faces a week marked by atmospheric stability under the influence of the Atlantic anticyclone. Predominantly clear or lightly clouded skies will be the norm, although towards the end of the week—especially Friday—cloud build-up may occur over the eastern sierras, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms as the anticyclone’s influence lessens there.
– Winds will mainly be from the east (levante) for most of the week, generally light except around the Strait of Gibraltar and the Almeria coast, where they may blow strongly on Wednesday and Thursday, easing from Friday.
– On Monday and Tuesday, westerly winds (poniente) will prevail, causing a temporary dip in temperatures in the Guadalquivir Valley, except along the Málaga coast, where a local hot wind (terral) today will briefly raise temperatures. From Tuesday onward, as the levante returns, Málaga will see a temperature drop while inland Andalucía may experience a rise or sustained high temperatures. The increase in defence spending in Europe puts the future of the countryside in Andalucia in check: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission’s draft budget for 2028-2034 proposes to quintuple military spending, offset by a 20-22% cut to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), reducing its funds from 378 billion to 300 billion euros. This cut heavily threatens Andalucia, the Spanish region most reliant on CAP, receiving 25% of Spain’s aid, supporting about 250,000 farms with annual average payments of 6,050 euros.
– The reduction would render many holdings unviable, accelerating rural abandonment already worsened by rising production costs, inflation, war in Ukraine, price volatility, and climate change. The CAP has been instrumental since 1962 in safeguarding European agricultural sovereignty and preventing rural depopulation, especially in Andalucia since Spain’s EU accession in 1986. Now, European, national, and regional agriculture leaders unite to oppose the cuts, warning of renewed protests and tractor demonstrations across Spain and Brussels. The timing, mid-summer after harvest, adds urgency to a sector already facing an existential crisis due to economic and environmental pressures. MALAGA PROVINCE

The heat melts Malaga, which marks the highest temperatures in Spain: Alora with 42.4 degrees and Coín with 41.6: {Translation, first 2 paragraphs}
– The heat has returned with a vengeance to the province of Málaga, as can be confirmed in the Guadalhorce Valley, where temperatures have exceeded 42 degrees. In Álora and Coín, residents may have thought about trying to fry an egg on the street—a classic summer scene on Andalusian television—because these towns recorded the two highest temperatures of the day in all of Spain. In Álora, thermometers reached 42.4 degrees at 5:50 p.m., after already passing 42 degrees at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, in Coín, temperatures reached 41.6 degrees at 4:30 p.m. Melting, and unable to blame the terral wind.
– Estepona didn’t have an easy day either, with 40.3 degrees reached at 6:00 p.m. The fourth highest temperature in the country on Monday, under a yellow warning in effect from noon until 9:00 p.m. in the Guadalhorce Valley, the western Costa del Sol, and the Antequera region, where the municipality of Antequera itself recorded 37.5 degrees. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Rincón de la Victoria will host the closing ceremony of the Malaga Flamenco Art Biennial with the premiere of ‘Soy gitano’ (I am a gypsy): {Translation, summary}
– The 9th Málaga Flamenco Art Biennial, organised by the Provincial Council through Turismo Costa del Sol, will conclude on Saturday, 2nd August at 10:00 pm at the Rincón de la Victoria auditorium with an in-house production.
– ‘Soy gitano’ brings together two of the most Camarón-inspired voices today, Duquende and Pedro El Granaíno, with dancer Farruquito and the Málaga Symphony Orchestra, led by Rubén Díez. Also performing are guitarists Manuel Valencia and Paco Cruzado; percussionist Paco Vega; and choirs and clapping by Bolita, Manuel de la Nina, and Gema and Rocío Monje Montoya, daughters of Camarón de la Isla. Music direction is by composer and arranger Jesús Bola.
– The show is based on songs Camarón de la Isla recorded and popularised, such as ‘Nana del caballo grande,’ ‘La tarara’ (taranta), ‘Calle Real’ (fandangos), ‘La leyenda del tiempo’ (jaleos), and ‘Soy gitano’ (tangos), celebrating the legendary artist’s best moments.
– Lasting 80 minutes, ‘Soy gitano’ is an original idea by the Biennial director Antonio Roche González, with technical coordination by Patricia Gea and hosted by flamenco expert Manuel Curao. Tickets are available at mientrada.net and the auditorium box office from one hour before the show.

UKRAINE WAR

Trump says he’s no longer interested in speaking with Putin:
– U.S. President Donald Trump said he is no longer interested in speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore. […] We have such nice conversations, such respectful and nice conversations, and then people die the following night, with a missile going into a town and hitting — recently, I guess, the nursing home, but they hit other things,” Trump said on Monday.
– Trump also said he would shorten the deadline he had previously set for the Russian president to agree to a ceasefire. “I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today,” he said. Trump had earlier demanded that Putin halt hostilities by the beginning of September.
– If Moscow fails to implement a ceasefire, Trump threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on imports to the United States from any country that continues trading with Russia.
– The two leaders last spoke by phone on July 3. Following the call, Trump voiced dissatisfaction, saying he doubted Putin was genuinely committed to achieving a swift peace.

The ‘Golf Force One’: this is the armoured buggy with which Donald Trump has surprised in Scotland: {Translation, summary}
– It seems that Donald Trump spares no expense in terms of security, especially after the attack he suffered last year at a rally in Pennsylvania. During his recent visit to the Trump Turnberry golf course the U.S. president used a custom armoured buggy that has not gone unnoticed.
– Informally nicknamed as Golf Force One, the small vehicle is a modified version of the Polaris Ranger XP NorthStar Edition, a utility SUV commonly used by police forces in rural areas. The unit has been transformed with a level of armour unusual for a golf environment, as part of a reinforcement in security protocols around the president.
– The buggy has several visible modifications: a dark strip on the windscreen that indicates the presence of bulletproof glass, reinforced side panels and an armoured rear structure, possibly used for storage of equipment or security personnel. The vehicle is equipped with all-terrain tires designed to support the extra weight of armour so as not to compromise mobility on the soft ground of golf courses. The vehicle has an estimated top speed of 105 km/h and capacity for six occupants, as well as enough space to transport clubs and sports equipment. Queen Letizia sweeps Tenerife with her most flattering summer dress: {Translation, summary}
– On Monday, July 28, 2025, Queen Letizia concluded her institutional agenda in Tenerife by presiding over the annual meeting of directors of the Cervantes Institute at the University of La Laguna.
– For the occasion, Queen Letizia opted for one of her most recognizable summer outfits: a floral-print chiffon dress by Adolfo Domínguez, which she has worn on previous occasions and has become a classic in her wardrobe. The crossover design features lantern sleeves, a V-neckline, and a flattering belt, all in shades of pink and coral that enhance her summer tan. The Queen completed the look with nude slingback shoes by Magrit and diamond earrings, maintaining the sobriety and elegance that characterize her recent public appearances. RECALLS

Ketamine drug for dog, cat and horse anaesthesia is recalled due to a defect: {Translation}
– The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has detected a quality defect in batches of the veterinary drug Anesketin 100 mg/ml (Ketamine), which is an injectable solution for dogs, cats and horses (registration number 2834 ESP). The problem is related to the presence of silicone particles in several vials of this drug, specifically in batches 149366, 150950 and 152290.
– The non-compliance has been notified by the representative of the marketing owner of the article, Dechra Veterinary Products. The AEMPS, after receiving an update on the status of the investigations and not being able to clarify the origin of the quality defect, has decided to initiate the withdrawal of all affected batches up to the veterinary level, as indicated in a statement. These measures are agreed with the owner of the medicine and are in accordance with the measures taken in other countries.
– For this reason, the AEMPS has decreed Alert VDC 8/2025 ordering the withdrawal from the market of the aforementioned batches of the veterinary medicine by Eurovet Animal Health B.V. as responsible for marketing. Usually new versions of Windows are the problem, but now as Win 11 approaches its Oct ’27 retirement it is more buggy than ever! Microsoft quietly fixed Windows 11 24H2 issues caused by past update:
– Microsoft has tacitly confirmed that the mandatory Windows 11 24H2 updates from past months negatively impacted the operating system’s stability, which is bad timing for the company who recently claimed that Windows 11 is the “most reliable” version of Windows ever.
– The issues continued with mandatory updates KB5060842 and KB5063060 in June, which brought their own problems. Windows 11 users might’ve seen error messages such as 0x800f0922, 0x80070002, 0x80070306 or 0x800f0991 when they tried to install the updates.
– According to Windows Latest, system stability issues include: games randomly restarting, Windows taskbar freezes, incorrect Windows Firewall events, among other reported issues. Microsoft has now quietly confirmed these problems.
– Microsoft has recently committed to improving Windows 11 performance and made moves to improve Windows 11 stability with stricter driver standards. Hopefully the company will hold true to its words and these sorts of issue-laden Windows 11 updates will become a thing of the past.
