Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Cheeky Buggers- Spain requests EU loans to increase military spending despite claiming to be the fastest growing EU economy while contributing the least to EU Defence funds: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission confirmed this Tuesday that Spain is among the Member States of the European Union which have requested access to European loans to increase Defence spending.
– Brussels proposed last March an instrument of 150 billion euros in loans for military expenditure as part of the plan to rearm Europe over the next decade. The leaders gave their approval to this initiative at a summit held later that same month.
– These loans will allow capitals to subsidise, on the one hand, munitions, missiles, and artillery systems, as well as protection of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, military mobility, and air and missile defence systems, among others. Feijóo calls for the resignation of the Attorney General: “He cannot continue for one more minute”: {Translation}
– The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo {pic}, has called for the resignation of Álvaro García Ortiz, after the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the decision of high court judge Ángel Hurtado to prosecute the attorney general for allegedly participating in the leak of confidential information from the case against Alberto González Amador, the partner of Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for a double tax offense.
– “It’s simple. Someone who is in the dock cannot prosecute crimes. The attorney general must resign immediately. He cannot continue for another minute,” wrote the PP leader on social media platform X.
– The PP spokesperson in Congress, Ester Muñoz, expressed a similar view. “Spain does not deserve the shame of having its attorney general prosecuted and investigated,” insisted Muñoz, who assured that this situation “does not happen in any democratic country.” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/nacional/feijoo-pide-dimision-fiscal-general-puede-seguir-20250729151352-ntrc_amp.html

ANDALUCÍA

“The Regional Government of Andalusia will be fully digital by 2030 at a cost of 2,600 million euros”- Absolute BS, if you can’t run buses on time, can’t manage Health without 18 month waiting lists and your secured digital data bases get hacked regularly, what make them think digitizing everything securely within 4 years is possible?: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Government has pledged nearly two thousand six hundred million euros to fully digitise its administration by 2030, aiming to modernise social services, judicial systems, and key economic sectors through advanced digital platforms. The Multiannual Action Plan 2025-2030 proposes automating aid distribution, creating a blockchain-based sovereign digital identity, expanding connectivity via initiatives such as the Andalucía Vuela wifi network, the largest in Europe, and establishing digital entrepreneurship centres in strategic industries.
– However, while the plan is ambitious and well-funded, the sheer scale and complexity of digitising every facet of public administration across a diverse and expansive autonomous community raise questions about feasibility. Challenges such as technological integration, digital literacy among citizens, infrastructure deployment delays, and cyber-security threats may impede timely and complete implementation. Past experience in large-scale digital transformations suggests that while progress is likely, full digital coverage and seamless service delivery by 2030 remain uncertain. Therefore, cautious optimism is warranted when assessing the government’s ability to meet all stated objectives within the proposed timeframe.
{Blockchain is not secure for storing private data because vulnerabilities exist at multiple levels, including endpoint security where users’ private keys can be stolen through phishing attacks, and also during data transmission, which can be compromised by routing attacks that intercept sensitive information without detection. Additionally, poor key management, insider threats, and potential breaches in smart contracts or misconfigurations can expose private data, and the immutable nature of blockchain can hinder correction or deletion of erroneous or sensitive information once recorded, thereby risking irreversible privacy violations,
Blockchain is decentralized, so by definition copies of all contents are distributed to thousands of depositories; blockchain is the opposite of privacy! DefiLlama, an aggregator of decentralized financial information, reports that blockchain hacks have resulted in losses exceeding US$200 million in just June 2024 alone. See image. -Ed.}

TORROX

Torrox raises its water bill by 63 cents more per month per 15,000 litres: {Translation, summary}
– The Torrox City Council has approved the modification of the tax ordinance regulating the rate for water supply and the sewerage service. This is due to the application of the year-on-year CPI and the additional update due to the economic increase produced in the purchase of water. Specifically, the Torrox City Council will apply an update of the water rate of 0.63 cents per month per 15,000 liters of water consumption. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Paco El Bueno, an insurance agent accused of defrauding 200 people out of €300 million, has been arrested: {Translation, summary}
– Paco El Bueno became renowned for making the economy flourish for all who approached him. Small investors who entrusted him with a few thousand euros saw these sums increase by as much as 300 per cent, and they devoted themselves to spreading the word far and wide, albeit always in secret, throughout the town of Vélez Málaga.
– Francisco Gutiérrez Ortega, known as Paco El Bueno, gained fame by promising high returns to small investors. He attracted over 200 people, including police officers, lawyers, and even lottery winners, who entrusted him with large sums, believing in his reputed financial skill.
– The scheme allegedly operated as a pyramid fraud, with investors given handwritten documents or papers bearing the insurance company Occident’s letterhead, where Gutiérrez was once an agent. In mid-July, Gutiérrez and his Ukrainian wife disappeared, leaving victims with estimated losses of up to 300 million euros. {200 small investors lost €300Mil? The small investments averaged €1.5mil, all from 200 people in the Velez Malaga area? That many locals, dumb enough to fall for this kind of scam, got that kind of money laying around? There is something fishy with these numbers. -Ed.} Contrary to rumours of fleeing abroad, he was arrested in Logroño.
– The investigation revealed family involvement, including his wife, brother-in-law, and sister, all owning properties disproportionate to their incomes. The insurance firm terminated its relationship with him and is cooperating with authorities. Affected investors have formed a group planning protests against Gutiérrez and Occident, tying into the high-profile Starlite Marbella festival. HEALTH

An illegal aesthetic medicine centre with thousands of followers on social networks dismantled in Granada: {Translation, summary}
– A 29-year-old Russian woman was arrested by the National Police for alleged offences against public health and illegal professional practice. She ran an unlicensed aesthetic medicine centre in Granada, performing lip augmentations using hyaluronic acid without medical guarantees or supervision.
– Such treatments are legally restricted to qualified doctors and cannot be carried out by nurses or other health professionals.
– The centre was promoted on social media and attracted nearly 15,000 followers.
– During a joint inspection with regional health authorities, police found hundreds of client consent forms, unsecured vials of hyaluronic acid, some opened and improperly stored, and a large amount of cash. This operation, named ‘For Quality’, followed warnings from the Granada Aesthetic Medicine Association about the proliferation of illegal clinics posing health risks.
– The detained woman was presented to the Granada Investigating Court. Investigations continue to determine the full scope of the illicit activity and any further liabilities. The case highlights significant public health concerns linked to clandestine cosmetic clinics. ICU nurses at Malaga Regional Hospital respond to staff shortages- “We cannot guarantee safe care”: {Translation, summary}
– The nurses at the Regional Hospital have long reported a shortage of around 300 staff, claiming the summer staffing plan is inadequate. Recently, ICU nurses formally protested, declaring it impossible to ensure safe and appropriate care with current staffing, and warning that the situation is “unsustainable.”
– Due to staffing shortages, eight ICU beds have been closed, and critical patients have been transferred from ICU to wards overnight to free space. A highly severe patient required urgent transfer on artificial heart support, exacerbating the pressure amid insufficient personnel. The Nursing Union warned that insufficient staffing risks negligence and condemned reliance on double shifts and forced early discharges.
– The hospital described the incident as an exceptional one-off event, handled with necessary safety measures, and reaffirmed its commitment to quality care and its staff, noting ongoing efforts to improve complex patient transfer protocols.
