NEWS & ARTICLES

Important News Note:
– Readers may notice that I am writing more original news articles than in the past. The reason is that much of the news in mainstream sources is AI composed rubbish, all parroting each other with repetitious, word-padded articles as AI struggles to meet the word-counts editors demand. And when one source publishes an article with errors, like the Velez pyramid scam I covered in the past 2 issues, then they all post that same error. When I see such errors I must dig into publications that do not rely so heavily on AI written content, to get the real facts, and finding these genuine articles is often a difficult task. I collect those articles, translate if necessary, analyse them, then write my own articles. I include links to my sources so you can easily verify my articles, confirming the most reliable sources I can find.
– This is very time consuming and stressful work when I am facing daily deadlines. However, I feel the research and composing effort is worth it; in this way DigameXtra will continue to provide the highest quality news to my readers. If something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.
– If you appreciate these efforts, please spread the word about DigameXtra to your friends and colleagues. In today’s news climate finding reliable, accurate, properly researched articles is requiring me to pay for subscriptions to “premium” sources, driving up my productions costs significantly. You may have noticed many popular news outlets now hiding their human written articles behind paywalls, leaving only AI written articles accessible for free. And I understand this, they must pay humans to produce actual journalism; AI content they get for free. So they demand payment for this “premium” content to cover their expenses. In contrast, DigameXtra will continue to allow free access to all its articles. But I need help in order to do so.
– I need to balance these new efforts with more readers, donors and sponsors, please spread the word! Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
– End of rant. -Ed.

SPAIN

Diesel continues to rise and touches its highest since the beginning of April: {Translation, summary}
– Diesel prices in Spain have risen for the third week running, reaching levels last seen in early April, while petrol costs have slightly decreased ahead of the busy August travel period. Currently, diesel averages 1.435 euros per litre, a 0.2% increase, with petrol down 0.13% at 1.489 euros.
– Despite recent rises, both fuels remain cheaper than during the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, and well below the record highs of summer 2022. Filling a 55-litre diesel tank costs roughly 78.92 euros, approximately 2.64 euros less than in August 2024, and petrol tank-filling is now nearly 6.7 euros cheaper. Spain’s fuel prices remain below the EU and eurozone averages. ANDALUCÍA

The price of fruits and vegetables soars by 18% in the last 12 months, close to 4.5% in July alone: {Translation}
– The price of fruit and vegetables has soared by 18% in the last 12 months, according to data from the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), which has warned of the monthly “extraordinary rise” of 4.48% in the heading of fruits and vegetables after the advance CPI data for July was released on Wednesday.
– Specifically, the consumer organisation collects, month by month, the evolution of the prices of 101 fresh and canned foods, private label and manufacturers, along with the most common drugstore and hygiene products in eight large supermarket chains, such as Alcampo, Carrefour, Día, Mas, Ahorramas, Lidl, Mercadona and El Corte Inglés Supermarkets.
– Thus, in the last 12 months, the items in the shopping basket that have risen in price, in addition to fruit and vegetables (18%), are meat and coldcuts (10%) and, to a lesser extent, dairy products (3%) and drugstore and hygiene products (1%), while on the opposite side are beverages, whose price falls by 3%, fish (-4%) and pantry products (-7%).
– Among fruit and vegetables, the foods that have become more expensive in the last 12 months have been lemons, which have shot up in price by 62%, followed by pears (31%), onions (29%) and salad tomatoes (22%), while potatoes have significantly reduced their price by 6%.
– The consumer organisation warns of the “spectacular” rise in prices, especially as Spain is one of the main producers of fruit and vegetables in the European Union.
– In this context, OCU warns that the price of food is still 36% more expensive than three years ago. The situation, according to the organisation, should would require a new reduction in VAT, recovering the reduced values of last year, while once again requesting the consideration of meat and fish as basic foodstuffs so that VAT is reduced from the current 10% to 4%. CÓMPETA

The Regional Government uses two million euros to improve the access roads to Cómpeta: {Translation, summary}
– Rocío Díaz, the Councillor for Development, Territorial Coordination, and Housing, visited Cómpeta to discuss improvements in local infrastructure. The Andalusian Government has invested over two million euros to enhance connections, focusing on safety and quality of life in inland Málaga. Key among these works was the upgrade of the A-7207 road between Canillas de Albaida and Cómpeta, including widening, resurfacing, and installing a roundabout to reduce accidents at a formerly dangerous junction. This roundabout has been transformed into a symbol of Cómpeta’s cultural heritage, featuring a statue and decorations dedicated to the traditional Wine Night festival. – Additionally, the government swiftly repaired storm damage between Cómpeta and Torrox, reopening the road within weeks. These efforts form part of a broader 1.7 million-euro emergency road repair programme in the region. ALMERIA

Vox rattles the immigration cage: {DigameXtra Exclusive}
– The Town Council of El Ejido has covered two Vox billboards on immigration, condemning them as a “deplorable policy of provocation” that harms the city’s image and inflames social tensions. The billboards contrasted an image of a woman in a hijab linked to PSOE and PP with a smiling woman beside the Vox logo.
– The Council is considering legal action to remove them permanently, accusing Vox of polarising society and supporting the State’s immigration responsibility. The Council criticised PSOE’s migration policy as ineffective, citing open doors, zero repatriations, and unchecked human trafficking. They praised the PP’s stance favouring legal, orderly immigration aligned with local capacity and employability, stressing the need for migrants to integrate and obey the law.
– Vox accused the PP of censoring its campaign, alleging pressure on firms to block billboard installation. Vox defended the campaign as opposing harmful cultural practices and fighting “islamisation,” criticizing PSOE and PP for regularising illegal immigrants and blaming open-border policies for imported violence.

UKRAINE WAR

Russian missile and drone attack hits Ukrainian capital Kyiv, killing 8 people and wounding 82:

– Russia fired 309 Shahed and decoy drones, and eight Iskander-K cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian air force said. The attack targeted the Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Sumy, Mykolaiv regions, with Ukraine’s capital being the primary target, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram. UK

Report- Prince Andrew wins fight to stay in Royal Lodge after years-long eviction war with King Charles:
– Andrew has resided at the lavish home since 2004. He currently lives there with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.
– After years of digging his heels in and refusing to leave his sprawling royal residence, the disgraced Duke of York is now celebrating “having won the Royal Lodge row,” the Express reports. According to the outlet, Andrew has been “all smiles” since finding out that his brother, King Charles, has given up trying to evict him – a stark contrast to his downcast outings earlier this year.
– “Charles tried his best to get his non-working royal sibling to move to a smaller premises elsewhere to free up the royal home,” the outlet notes. As for how Andrew, 65, managed to emerge victorious in the fight over the royal digs, the duke presented Charles with “a lease document that states he is legally entitled to stay there,” the outlet adds.
– However, it sensationally emerged in November that the shunned royal had found a mystery financial backer at the eleventh hour, allowing him to remain at the royal digs. As a result, Charles responded by removing priceless items from the plush property over maintenance and security concerns.
Andrew has been living off a hefty allowance from the king’s personal wealth for more than six years — ever since he was linked to disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
– Since finding an anonymous financial backer late last year, Andrew has faced recurring calls from the UK government to reveal the source of his mystery funding. Exactly where the duke found the cash that enabled him to remain at the property is still unclear, as his only known steady income source is a Royal Navy pension. ENERGY CRISIS

Conflicting Goals Create Untenable Policy Decisions: {DigameXtra Exclusive}
– Spain’s steadfast commitment to phasing out nuclear energy, as reaffirmed by Vice President Yolanda Díaz {pic} on Thursday, has sparked growing debate over the wisdom of its current energy strategy. While the government insists that shutting down nuclear plants aligns with its ambitious green transition, citing job creation and economic success in renewables, this policy may overlook crucial realities.
– Accelerated plans to expand sectors like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles will sharply increase Spain’s electricity demand in the years ahead. Yet the government continues to reject extending the operational life of existing nuclear plants, claiming that doing so would undermine renewable expansion and break prior commitments to investors as well as exacerbate nuclear waste challenges.
– However, renewables such as wind and solar, while growing rapidly, remain inherently variable and weather-dependent. Nuclear power provides consistent, low-carbon baseload energy, a safety net that green sources, even with advanced storage technologies, have yet to fully replicate. Ignoring this reliability could leave Spain susceptible to supply shortfalls, price spikes, or increased reliance on fossil fuels during peak demand or poor weather, undermining climate goals.
– Spain’s ambitious AI and e-mobility goals require a flexible energy policy, one that values nuclear energy as a reliable bridge rather than ideologically shunning it. Otherwise, the nation risks a green transition that is high on hope but low on secure, affordable energy.

HEALTH

The SAS assures that the summer plan in Andalusia is going “normally, except when it’s not”: {DigameXtra Exclusive}
– The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) says its 2025 summer plan is going smoothly, apart from the odd “specific situation.” But a quick look at what’s happening tells a different story. Just this week, Seville’s Virgen Macarena Hospital was swamped with emergency patients, nearly 600 in one day, which is well above even the busiest flu season. Health boss Rocío Hernández says the plan is “flexible,” with extra help sent to the busiest spots, and touts the hiring target of over 36,500 temps to cover holiday absences {pic}, a big jump compared to years past. But what good are hiring targets when they admit they can’t find qualified medical staff willing to work in Andalucia?
– Still, attempting to bring in all these short-term staff shines a spotlight on deeper problems. If things were truly under control, would SAS need to draft in so many new hands every summer? Hospitals struggling to keep up, overstretched teams, and waiting rooms packed with people show that problems aren’t just “isolated incidents.” While digital tools and extra clinics are helpful, they can’t magically fix staff shortages or stop patient surges.
– So, when officials insist “everything’s fine,” it’s fair to ask: is that really the full story, or just sunny spin on a hot summer reality?

Arrested for doing aesthetic treatments without a degree in Fuengirola: {Translation}
– National Police officers have arrested a woman, owner of a beauty salon in the Malaga town of Fuengirola, for allegedly providing cosmetic treatments without a license.
This was announced on Thursday in a statement from the provincial police station, which detailed that the woman allegedly performed cosmetic procedures on her clients, including injections, among other services, without having the required training for this type of activity.
– Some users suffered “temporary disfigurement,” such as drooping eyelids and completely closed eyes. The suspect was arrested for her alleged involvement in a crime of professional intrusion. The investigation arose after local health services carried out an inspection of the premises, after learning that a beauty salon in Fuengirola was performing cosmetic procedures using injections by professionally unqualified personnel.
– In the first phase of the process, officers from the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of the National Police Station in Fuengirola located several victims who had undergone treatments with harmful results. These clients, who had not filed a complaint at the time, claimed to have suffered injuries as a result of the cosmetic procedures carried out at the aforementioned beauty salon, according to the National Police.
– Finally, after verifying these facts and confirming that the owner did not have the required qualifications for these activities and did not have the necessary training, the officers proceeded to arrest the owner of the center.

FROM THE “WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING” DEPARTMENT

Three men accused of sexually abusing a chicken in Córdoba acquitted: {Translation, 2 articles combined}
– The Criminal Court Number 5 of Córdoba has acquitted three men who were accused of sexually abusing a hen in March 2022, despite the fact that “they admitted the acts and published the video on Instagram,” according to the Animalist Party (Pacma), which warned that this sets “a dangerous precedent and opens the door to the legalisation of zoophilia.”
– The three young men were accused of a sexual assault on a chicken in a town in the north of Cordoba, an episode that they recorded with their mobile phones and disseminated on social networks, acknowledged the facts during the trial, although they alleged that they were under the effects of alcohol.
– In a statement, Pacma pointed out that “the facts established in the judgement describe how one of the accused, under the influence of alcohol, repeatedly inserted his finger into the cloaca of the animal while another held it by the legs.”
– The private prosecution, brought by the Animalist Party, submitted a veterinary report which, “although it did not examine the animal physically, warned of the risk of tears, prolapses, and even death resulting from those acts.”
– However, they noted that “the Public Prosecutor withdrew their accusation due to the absence of a veterinary examination or objective evidence of injury, which led to the acquittal,” a verdict that the political party intends to appeal.
– Although the events occurred before the reform of the Penal Code in 2023, “the outcome would have been the same under the current legislation,” they affirmed, adding that “Organic Law 3/2023, which came into effect on 18 April 2023, stipulates that only sexual abuses to animals causing injuries or requiring veterinary treatment are punishable as a crime.” “If such damage is not proven, the conduct is decriminalised and considered only a misdemeanour, with a minimum fine and possible disqualification; never imprisonment,” they added.
– Pacma considers “it unacceptable and dangerous that the Penal Code allows impunity for proven humiliating sexual practices against animals provided they are not accompanied by physical harm requiring veterinary care.” “This legal loophole enables extreme situations of sexual violence that will not be prosecuted criminally,” they warned.
– The Animalist Party, which already sparked debate on the decriminalisation of sexual abuse toward animals following “the controversial reform of 2023,” has demanded “an urgent amendment to the Penal Code ensuring that all sexual abuse against animals is classified as a crime, without the need to prove physical injuries, as moral, psychological harm and the violation of the animal’s dignity already constitute sufficient aggression.” Sources, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/noticia-absueltos-tres-varones-acusados-abusar-sexualmente-gallina-cordoba-20250731123122.html & https://www.eldiadecordoba.es/cordoba/absueltos-jovenes-agresion-sexual-gallina-cordoba_0_2004489692.html
