Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Resignations over fake resumes unleash a flood of deletions and corrections: {Translation, summary}
– Recent months have seen a spate of political scandals in Spain involving falsified academic qualifications, as parties conduct summer reviews of politicians’ official curricula. The resignation of Noelia Núñez (PP) for fabricating her studies spurred further resignations by socialist José María Ángel, accused of faking a University of Valencia degree, and Extremadura’s councillor Ignacio Higuero (ex-Vox, now PP), who falsely claimed a Marketing degree predating the programme’s existence in Spain.
– Others, such as Senate President Pedro Rollán (PP), withdrew false claims of a diploma and master’s from a non-official marketing school. Badalona’s mayor Xavier García Albiol admitted to overstating legal qualifications, while Ana Millán, Madrid Assembly vice-president, falsely used a political science degree in election campaigns. None but Núñez have resigned.
– The revelations prompted investigations into failed transparency laws among Valencian officials, including Javier Sendra’s inflated master’s degree claims. Andalusian President Juan Manuel Moreno, Santander’s mayor Gema Igual, and Navarra PP leader Javier García Jiménez also adjusted their public records to reflect more accurate, lesser qualifications. These cases have provided cross-party political ammunition, revealing a widespread culture of credential inflation and calls for greater accountability in Spanish politics. ANDALUCÍA

The Andalusian Regional Government demands full control of the coastline from the Spanish State: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Government seeks full control over coastal and maritime-terrestrial public domain management, aiming to exercise all powers granted by its Statute of Autonomy, following examples set by the Basque Country and Galicia. Andalusia has over 2,190 kilometres of coastline plus riverbank zones under its domain. It desires authority to grant permits for coastal and sea activities, including moorings and sailing schools, and to oversee boundary delineations and coastal municipal management with ethnological protections.
– While the Junta has managed some coastal protections since 2011, the Ministry of Ecological Transition still controls boundary approvals, requiring its favourable reports for use changes. This causes delays and restricts development in culturally sensitive coastal areas. The Junta stresses that Andalusia’s unique coastal character requires tailored governance, unlike uniform ministry rules designed for other regions. Key pending issues include public tenders for beach bar concessions and harmonising legislation with local needs. The Junta looks to the Basque Country’s recent transfer decree as a legislative model for achieving full autonomous coastal governance. Unlocking Andalucía’s Economic Potential- Is Independence The Answer?: {DigameXtra Exclusive, 4 part article}
Part 1 of 4, Part 2 tomorrow
*History- Independence & Anarchy*
– Andalucía, Spain’s most populous autonomous community with nearly 8.7 million residents, stands at a crossroads. Rich in culture and natural resources, this southern region boasts a unique identity and significant economic assets. Yet, despite generating substantial wealth, Andalucía continues to face persistent economic problems. Advocates for independence argue that only by gaining full fiscal and administrative control can Andalucía unlock its true potential and deliver prosperity for its citizens.
– The roots of Andalucian nationalism and independence aspirations date back to the 19th century. In 1873, during the Cantonal Revolution, cities such as Sevilla, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, and Málaga proclaimed themselves as independent cantons in a federalist uprising opposing the centralized Spanish state, marking early expression of regional self-determination. Influenced by social republican ideals, this movement demonstrated the early demands for local autonomy and social justice.
– Let us not forget that Madrileños still refer to Andalucians as “anarquistas”. Between the drought and poor harvests of 1881 and 1882, social tensions and hunger in Andalucía led to theft, robberies, and arson. There were raids on farms and riots in protest of lack of work. Insurgents demanded that the town council give them jobs in public works. Among the most serious urban riots, on November 3, 1882, in Jerez de la Frontera, about 60 people were arrested as the Civil Guard and army intervened. It was in this atmosphere that the “Black Hand” arose. The Black Hand (Spanish: La Mano Negra) was a presumed secret, anarchist organization based in the Andalucian region of Spain and best known as the perpetrators of murders, arson, and crop fires in the early 1880s.
– In the early 20th century, Andalucian nationalism gained a clearer voice through Blas Infante, known as the “father of Andalucía.” Between 1910 and 1936, Infante promoted Andalucian cultural identity and political autonomy, drafting a statute of autonomy approved in 1936 but never enacted due to the Spanish Civil War and Infante’s assassination by Francoist forces. After Franco’s death, popular demonstrations surged, with 1.4 million Andalucians rallying in 1977 to demand self-governance. Following a complex political process, Andalucía achieved regional autonomy, although still under the umbrella of Spanish rule, in 1981. Since then, full independence remains a marginalized yet persistent theme, driven by cultural pride and economic grievances.

MALAGA CITY

The Historic Parade of 2025, the day before the start of the Malaga Fair: {Translation}
– Friday, August 15, starting at 8:00 p.m
– Last year, the Malaga Fair revived the Historical Parade, an event commemorating the celebration of August 19, when in 1487 the keys to the city were handed over to the Catholic Monarchs. In 2025, the day of the fireworks will once again be celebrated on Friday, August 15. This event is organized by the Zegrí Cultural Association. In its previous edition, more than 200 volunteers represented this historic moment in the streets of the capital. In 2025, the Fair will be held from August 16 to 23, and the day before it begins, there will be a parade and fireworks at night.
– As on previous occasions, it will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Plaza de la Merced. Half an hour later, around 8:30 p.m., the handing over of the keys to the city will be re-enacted in the Plaza de la Aduana. After this ceremony, the parade will continue its route through the main streets of Malaga’s historic centre. NERJA

Two Irish tourists violently assaulted during a robbery in the centre of Nerja: {Translation, summary}
– Two young Irish tourists have suffered serious injuries to their faces and other parts of their bodies after being victims of a brutal assault in the early hours of the morning with the intention of robbing them, allegedly perpetrated by a group of four young residents of Nerja, one of whom is a minor.
– The events occurred in the early hours of this past Friday, when the two Irish tourists were walking along a central street in the easternmost coastal town of the province, in the early hours of the morning, in the direction of the hotel establishment where they were staying.
– At one point they were approached by the group of assailants, who threatened them with a knife, without attacking them, and gave them strong blows with their fists on the face and other parts of their bodies. Due to the state of drunkenness in which the two Irish tourists were, they could hardly defend themselves, as SUR has learned.
– Even so, the aggression was very violent, with numerous traces of blood on the façade of one of the nearby houses. The alleged thieves managed to steal cash and mobile phones from them and fled the scene at a run. It was the neighbours of the street who, upon hearing the screams and blows, notified the Local Police and the Civil Guard.
– Both victims were transferred to the Nerja health centre by the agents, where they were treated for injuries to the face, with the fractures of several bones on the faces of both Irish tourists. The Civil Guard has taken over the investigation of the facts. Thus, the agents of the Armed Institute have identified the group of alleged assailants. GRANADA

The cheapest town in Granada to retire without worries- it has the lowest house prices: {Translation}
– In recent years, the number of persons aged over 65 who have decided to retire in Spain has increased considerably. Both Spanish citizens and internationals find, throughout the country, the ideal place to enjoy their pension, with a temperate climate, a rich cultural offering, and a network of services that promote well-being. These factors render regions such as Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and Andalusia ideal destinations during this stage of life. Moreover, the gastronomy and connection with nature make many parts of the country a fine choice for those seeking quality of life in retirement.
– Many people look to move during this period, but without living in the capital or large municipalities, as these tend to involve a higher cost and, generally, a more hectic life. Examples include the high housing prices in places like Almuñécar (2,784 euros per square metre), Granada (2,464 euros per square metre), Sierra Nevada (2,720 euros per square metre), or Playa Granada (2,288 euros per square metre).
– However, there are other municipalities and villages with lower figures that may be good options for retirement without excessive impact on the purse. One such place is Íllora, which becomes the cheapest town in the whole of Granada. According to the latest report published by Idealista, the price per square metre here is 512 euros, and although it has experienced an annual growth of 3.9 per cent, it remains the most affordable. This Andalusian village is of medium size, making it, during retirement, a more manageable space than large cities. Furthermore, it has fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, which gives it a much more familiar and close-knit atmosphere than other municipalities with larger populations. Located about 35 kilometres from Granada, Íllora also offers basic services such as a health centre, pharmacies, and various local shops. PETS

Veterinarians Push Back On New Meds Restrictions: {Translation, summary}
– The Official College of Veterinarians of Madrid (COLVEMA) and the Madrid Association of Pet Veterinarians (AMVAC) have asked the Ministry of Health for greater flexibility to administer medicines to animals under their care in a meeting held on Monday on the main challenges of the application of the Royal Decree regulating distribution, prescription, dispensing and use of veterinary medicines. The professionals request to be allowed to retail sell prescription medicines in quantities adjusted to the treatment, guaranteeing traceability and safety for animal patients.
– They have also demanded that the right of veterinarians to adapt dosage, route or duration of treatment be recognised, when justified by clinical criteria and scientific evidence; and that the classification of antibiotic groups according to the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Antimicrobial Advice (AMEG) should be a recommendation and not mandatory.
– The meeting also discussed how the management of veterinary drugs “has not generated conflicts” in the rest of the countries of the European Union (EU), “so it is clear that the problem lies in how it has been applied in Spain”. At the same time, there was talk of the flexibility of the use of medicines outside the technical label, as well as improvements in the transfer of medicines.
