SPAIN

Aemet issues new special warning about heatwave in Spain- this is how long it will last and the areas it will most affect:
– The heatwave that has arrived in Spain will stay for a while longer yet. That is the conclusion of the new special warning issued by Spain’s state weather agency Aemet this Wednesday. August has already been very hot, with temperatures hovering around 40C in many parts of the country.
– Aemet warned this morning that values are expected to remain “abnormally warm” this afternoon and Thursday, and the weather agency’s new warning offers little comfort.
– The second heatwave of summer began on Sunday 3 August and will last at least until Tuesday 12. The word “at least” is important, as Aemet does not guarantee that the extreme heat will cease on that day.
– “On Thursday 7 August a generalised upward trend in temperatures will begin again, with little significant changes expected on Friday 8. These two days will exceed 36-38C in most of the interior of the Spanish mainland, and may reach 40-42C in the northeastern depressions and in the Miño, Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir river valleys,” the agency forecasts.
– At the weekend the situation will be even more extreme, also affecting some parts of the north. “During the weekend, the slightly upward trend in temperatures is expected to continue in areas of the southern and eastern half of the peninsula, moving on Sunday to the Cantabrian area and northern Galicia, where the increases could be significant. In this way, it is expected to exceed 40-42C in the same areas previously mentioned, and without ruling them out on Sunday in the inland areas of the Basque Country”.
– Looking ahead to the start of next week, temperatures will vary little, as indicated by Aemet. “The most likely scenario for the start of next week is that temperatures will continue to be abnormally warm, except in the northern third of the country, where they are likely to start to fall. It is possible that additional thermal rises will be recorded, reaching 42-44C around the main depressions in the southern half and northeastern quadrant of the Spanish mainland, so taking this into account it is likely that this heat wave episode will last until at least Tuesday 12 August.” Source, Spanish: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/aemet-issues-new-special-warning-about-heatwave-20250806183714-nt.html

The Civil Guard tightens the noose around Pedro Sánchez and investigates his former advisor Salazar for embezzlement: {Translation, summary}
– In the last week before his summer holidays, Pedro Sánchez suffered three judicial setbacks, adding to the long list of investigations involving his closest circle. First, the Supreme Court confirmed the prosecution of the State Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz. Then came the indictment of Leire Díez, the so-called PSOE plumber who gathered material against the UCO. Finally, a judge in Seville ordered an investigation into Francisco Salazar, better known as Paco Salazar, the Prime Minister’s formerly trusted adviser who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations, just as he was about to take command at Ferraz during the crisis triggered by Santos Cerdán’s imprisonment.
– Salazar is under scrutiny for allegedly working for Sánchez and the PSOE while being officially employed and paid by the Dos Hermanas Town Hall between 2013 and 2017, with a monthly salary of 2,000 euros. He reportedly did not attend his official job but “supposedly” worked instead at PSOE headquarters in Madrid and later at the Government Presidency offices. These actions could constitute embezzlement, influence peddling and maladministration. The investigation also involves Francisco Toscano, the former Dos Hermanas mayor and one of Sánchez’s main political backers, for possible complicity or oversight.
– Though Vox brought the complaint without documentary proof, the court has authorised the Guardia Civil investigation to clarify facts. Toscano defends the legality of Salazar’s hiring and claims all absences were authorised and documented. This inquiry intensifies the judicial and political pressure on Sánchez’s inner circle amid wider corruption allegations. Brussels has been warning Sánchez for more than two years of the “high risks” of contracting with Chinese tech giant Huawei, yet he does it anyway. Clearly it is time to check his accounts for Chinese campaign contributions!: {Translation, summary}
– Over two years ago, the European Commission warned that Huawei and ZTE pose substantially higher risks and recommended their exclusion from 5G infrastructure. Despite this, the Sánchez administration has continued awarding Huawei contracts for sensitive functions such as judicial wiretaps and police communications.
– US intelligence committees threatened in 2024 to cut intelligence sharing with Spain should Huawei components remain in use, due to Chinese laws compelling Huawei to share strategic data with Beijing. Spain’s National Intelligence Centre reported Chinese espionage and influence operations within Spain in 2023, but such references were omitted in the subsequent year’s report.
– Meanwhile, Huawei continues to store vast amounts of Spanish labour data and critical Interior Ministry intercepts. Despite clear warnings from Brussels, Washington, and Spain’s own intelligence agency, the Spanish government maintains a permissive stance toward Huawei.
– This reckless approach ignores the serious security concerns acknowledged internationally and contrasts sharply with other European countries that have excluded Huawei over espionage fears. National security appears subordinated to political and economic convenience under Sánchez. ANDALUCÍA

1,550 people are still evacuated from hotels, homes and campsites due to the fire in Tarifa: {Translation, summary}
– The wildfire at the Torre La Peña campsite in Tarifa is still active. More than one hundred Infoca firefighters worked overnight to stop the fire from reaching the N-340 road, hotels and homes to the south, successfully doing so. The current focus is controlling the fire’s northern and eastern flanks, with six aerial units assisting since morning.
– Authorities evacuated 1,550 people from nearby hotels, campsites and residences. Some evacuees spent the night in emergency centres set up by the local government. In a rapid evacuation, over 5,000 vehicles left the area. The Civil Guard also evacuated the campsite and called for residents near vulnerable neighbourhoods to keep distance.
– Firefighters from various towns in the province have come to assist in what the mayor called the most serious fire in recent years, threatening busy summer recreation areas. Though roads briefly reopened to allow residents access to their homes, hotels, campsites and beaches remain off-limits. The government expressed thanks to the chef José Andrés’s foundation for supporting emergency personnel and evacuees with food. Unlocking Andalucía’s Economic Potential- Is Independence The Answer?: {DigameXtra Exclusive, 4 part article}
Part 2 of 4, Part 3 tomorrow
*Tourism Resources*
– A Thriving Tourism Sector Anchored by a Long Coastline. With over 800 kilometres of Mediterranean and Atlantic coastline, Andalucía is one of Europe’s premier tourist destinations. In 2024, its tourism sector generated nearly €29 billion, fuelled by approximately 36.2 million visitors. This influx supports around 400,000 jobs, making tourism the backbone of the regional economy.
– Cities like Málaga and Sevilla have benefited from growth in visitor numbers, with their international airports experiencing passenger increases of 11.5% and 14% respectively in 2024. Tourists are drawn to Andalucía’s combination of sun-soaked beaches, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural festivals, which have seen average spending rise to €82 per day, a 21% increase over pre-pandemic levels. This flourishing tourism industry not only boosts direct revenues, but also stimulates sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation. Advocates contend that greater fiscal autonomy would allow Andalucía to retain more tourism-generated wealth locally, reinvesting it in sustainable development projects and infrastructure upgrades tailored to meet regional needs.
*Agricultural Strength and Export Potential*
– Beyond tourism, agriculture constitutes a vital pillar of Andalucía’s economy, representing 6.5% of the regional GDP, more than double the national average of 2.7%. Renowned as Spain’s leading producer of olive oil, Andalucía accounts for about 59% of national output in this sector. The region also excels in fruit and pulses production, contributing substantially to both domestic markets and exports. Despite these impressive figures, agricultural growth and modernization have been hampered by centralized decision-making and limited fiscal flexibility. Regional leaders argue that independence would enable Andalucía to enact policies better suited to local climatic conditions and market demands, supporting innovation and increasing export competitiveness.
– Currently, Andalucía’s exports total over €40 billion annually, making up roughly 10.4% of Spain’s total. However, exports as a share of regional GDP (19.3%) lag behind the national average (25.6%), pointing to untapped opportunities within trade, industry, and ‘value-added’ production that could be increased through autonomous economic management.

MARBELLA

Holiday resort is epicentre of magnitude 2.7 minor earthquake:
– Spain’s IGN national geographic institute recorded an earthquake in Malaga province, with its epicentre in Marbella on the Costa del Sol, this Wednesday morning.
– The earthquake was registered at 11.43am and had a magnitude of 2.7. The epicentre was located at a depth of 83 kilometres, so it was barely perceptible on the surface. Although the effects of an earthquake do not depend solely on its magnitude, earthquakes below 3 are considered micro-earthquakes or minor earthquakes and are generally not perceptible.
– These types of earthquakes are part of the normal seismic activity in Andalucía, which one of the most active regions in Spain. Most of the earthquakes recorded on the Spanish mainland are in the south, as it is close to the boundary between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates. MURCIA

Torre Pacheco Riot Update- Violent repeat offender released without bail: {Translation}
– The aggressor, who’s assault of an old man started the riots, having already been sentenced to a year in prison for another attempted robbery with violence of an elderly man from the same town two days earlier, who was caught trying to flee to France after the riots, so an obvious flight risk, is provisionally released regardless of facts or logic.
– The 19-year-old young man, arrested on 14 July in Rentería (Guipúzcoa) and held in pretrial detention at the Martutene prison in San Sebastián, accused of assaulting a man in Torre Pacheco that sparked a wave of racist disturbances that same month in the Murcia municipality, has been released on provisional bail.
– According to sources from the Justice Department of the Basque Government who informed EFE on Wednesday, his release took place last Friday late afternoon by judicial order and with certain precautionary measures. These include a ban on approaching within 500 metres of the victim or communicating with him, prohibition on residing in or visiting the municipality of Torre Pacheco, surrender of his passport, ban on leaving the national territory, and weekly court appearances. The Public Prosecutor’s Office bizarrely did not request the examining judge of San Javier, the judicial district to which Torre Pacheco belongs, to confirm the initial order of pretrial detention issued by the San Sebastián court following his arrest.
– The young man, of Moroccan origin, was detained by the Civil Guard in Rentería as he allegedly tried to flee to France, after purportedly assaulting on 9 July a 68-year-old resident of Torre Pacheco. This assault was the trigger for the violent racist riots that lasted several days in that municipality of Murcia. Investigating Court number 5 of San Sebastián, ordered his imprisonment without bail on a charge of bodily harm, though the case was sent to the courts of San Javier, which have jurisdiction over Torre Pacheco.
– During nearly three weeks at Martutene prison, where he entered on 15 July, the young man was tried and sentenced to one year in prison for an attempted violent robbery of an elderly person in the same town two days earlier, in a summary trial by a Cartagena court before which he appeared by videoconference from the Basque prison.
– The disturbances in Torre Pacheco following the assault on the elderly man on 9 July led to 700 individuals being identified, 140 charged, and 10 arrested, as well as 12 cases requiring emergency assistance Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/tribunales/queda-en-libertad-provisional-el-agresor-del-anciano-de-torre-pacheco.html

Editor’s comment: Given the violent disturbance his latest assault triggered, leading to a wave of racist riots and social unrest in Torre Pacheco with multiple injuries and arrests, many may question why judicial authorities allowed the release rather than continued detention, especially for a repeat violent offender involved in a case with significant social impact. Generally, provisional release in such cases can depend on factors like evidentiary strength, risk assessment, legal rights, and procedural norms. However, the case has drawn attention precisely because the accused was in pretrial detention and had recent serious charges, highlighting tensions between safeguarding public safety and individual rights. In summary, the concern stems from possible judicial leniency or procedural decision-making that did not prevent a repeat violent offender and known flight risk from regaining freedom during an ongoing investigation linked to a major public order incident. This fuels criticism about whether the justice system adequately manages risks in such socially sensitive contexts. All this leniency does is encourage more similar events that do not endanger these wacko judges and prosecutors living in gated communities.

UKRAINE WAR

Russia says it no longer will abide by its self-imposed moratorium on intermediate-range missiles:
– Russia has declared that it no longer considers itself bound by a self-imposed moratorium on the deployment of nuclear-capable intermediate range missiles, a warning that potentially sets the stage for a new arms race as tensions between Moscow and Washington rise again over Ukraine.
In a statement Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry linked the decision to efforts by the U.S. and its allies to develop intermediate range weapons and preparations for their deployment in Europe and other parts of the world.
– Asked where and when Russia could potentially deploy intermediate-range weapons, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it’s not something to be announced in advance. “Russia no longer has any limitations, Russia no longer considers itself to be constrained by anything,” Peskov told reporters. “Therefore Russia believes it has the right to take respective steps if necessary.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-missile-intermediate-nuclear-putin-moratorium-5697b228999cf78b21784dba989c28c4

TRAVEL

Ryanair ground handling staff call strikes over working conditions- these are the affected dates,  including 15-17 Aug.:
– There could be a turbulent time ahead for Ryanair in Spain in the coming weeks during one of its busiest months of the year. The UGT trade union section at Azul Handling – Ryanair’s ground handling subsidiary in Spain – has called a strike, which is scheduled to start in the middle of August and take place every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of the year. The concerns of the trade union are the “ongoing precarious conditions and breaches of labour rights, with which the Ryanair company punishes its staff”. The UGT is joined by another large union in the sector of low-cost aviation – the CGT.

Andalucia to Madrid AVE trains have been restored after a new “railway collapse” with 2,200 passengers evacuated: {Translation, summary}
– At 5.18 a.m. on Wednesday, Adif declared that an incident affecting nine AVE trains, five long-distance and four medium-distance, had been resolved. The incident stranded 2,200 passengers for up to ten hours between Majarabique and Seville Santa Justa stations due to a power failure in the overhead catenary on both tracks. Several trains were stopped en route or at stations including Hornachuelos, Guadajoz, Córdoba and Majarabique, disrupting services to Seville, Madrid, Huelva and Córdoba. Emergency teams repaired the fault and authorities deployed Police, Civil Protection, firefighters and Urban Transport buses to assist passengers during a heatwave. Especially attended to were passengers with reduced mobility, some stranded at Miraflores. The Seville mayor publicly thanked emergency responders for their efforts. Train operations have since returned to normal, restoring vital rail connections in Andalusia.
